Verlichting (cultuurgeschiedenis)

De Amsterdamse schrijver Isaäc da Costa (1798-1860), een jood, liet zich in 1822 dopen tot christen. In 1823 publiceerde Da Costa het pamflet Bezwaren tegen den geest der eeuw, waarin hij zich tegen de ideeën van de Verlichting uitsprak. Met dit pamflet werd hij een van de meest uitgesproken vertegenwoordigers van het Réveil, een beweging binnen het protestantisme waarin de persoonlijke beleving van het geloof vooropstond. De collectie bevat in de eerste plaats de omvangrijke correspondentie van Da Costa met andere figuren van het Réveil, onder wie Willem de Clercq. Da Costa's teksten van voordrachten over vaderlandse geschiedenis en de Bijbel geven inzicht in de denkwereld van het Réveil. In de collectie is ook materiaal te vinden dat betrekking heeft op Da Costa's vrouw, Hanna Belmonte, en op de kinderen Da Costa, vooral Abraham, Francisca en Rebecca.

The Amsterdam author Isaäc da Costa (1798-1860), a Jew, was baptized a Christian in 1822. In 1823 Da Costa published Bezwaren tegen den geest der eeuw ('Objections against the spirit of the century'), in which he argued against the principles of the Enlightenment. With this pamphlet he became the most explicit representative of the Réveil, a Protestant movement stressing the personal element of belief. The collection consists of, in the first place, the extensive correspondence of Da Costa with other individuals of the Réveil, such as Willem de Clercq. There are also lectures on national history and the Bible by Da Costa, which offer insight into the mentality and way of thinking of Réveil adherents. Besides this, the collection contains documents about Da Costa's wife, Hanna Belmonte, and about the Da Costa children, especially Abraham, Francisca and Rebecca.

De collectie omvat handgeschreven commentaren en lezingen, collegelijsten en collegedictaten van de bibliothecaris van de Stadsbibliotheek en hoogleraar in de rechtsgeleerdheid aan het Amsterdamse Athenaeum Illustre H.C. Cras (1739-1820). Cras kan beschouwd worden als degene die het vak rechtsgeleerdheid aan het Athenaeum Illustre deed herleven. De collectie geeft vooral een goed beeld van de visie op de rechtsgeleerdheid in de tijd van de Verlichting, in het bijzonder op het natuurrecht.

This collection consists of material of H.C. Cras (1739-1820), a professor of law at the Athenaeum Illustre in Amsterdam and librarian of the Amsterdam municipal library. The collection contains handwritten comments and lectures, lists of lectures and lecture notes. Cras can be considered to be the one who revived law as a field of study at the Athenaeum Illustre. The collection gives a good impression of the view on law, in particular natural law, during the Enlightenment.
