Taxonomie

De Iconographia Zoologica vormt een unieke papieren databank van ruim 67.000 afbeeldingen van dieren, voornamelijk afkomstig uit boeken. De Iconographia Zoologica is tot stand gekomen in de jaren 1881-1883 door het samenvoegen en systematisch ordenen van vier verschillende verzamelingen met tekeningen en prenten van dieren en andere zoölogische afbeeldingen, namelijk die van de Utrechtse hoogleraar Th.G. van Lidth de Jeude (1788-1863), de Haagse zoöloog R.T. Maitland (1823-1904), conservator schelpdieren van Artis Abraham Oltmans (1811-1873) en het Genootschap Natura Artis Magistra.

The Iconographia Zoologica is a unique paper database of over 67,000 images of animals, mainly culled from books. The Iconographia Zoologica was created in the years 1881-1883 when four separate collections of drawings and prints of animals and other zoological images were merged and systematically arranged. They had been the collections of the Utrecht professor Th.G. van Lidth de Jeude (1788-1863), the Hague zoologist R.T. Maitland (1823-1904), Artis curator of shells Abraham Oltmans (1811-1873) and the Natura Artis Magistra society.

De collectie Linnaeana van de Rotterdamse entomoloog F.C.J. Fischer bestaat uit literatuur van en over Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778): 85 publicaties zijn van Linnaeus' hand en 269 publicaties behandelen zijn werk of zijn geschreven door leerlingen van hem. Deze laatste categorie betreft dissertaties die waarschijnlijk deels door Linnaeus geschreven of geredigeerd werden. De toevoeging van de collectie Fischer in 1967 aan de collectie Linnaeana van de Artis Bibliotheek maakt dat deze instelling nu – internationaal – een van de meest omvangrijke collecties Linnaeana beheert.

The collection of Linnaeana belonging to the Rotterdam entomologist F.C.J. Fischer (approx. 1930-1970) consists of literature by and about Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778). Eighty-five publications are by Linnaeus himself and 269 publications deal with his work or were written by his students. The latter category consists of dissertations which were probably partly written or edited by Linnaeus. The Fischer collection was added to the collection of Linnaeana in the Artis Bibliotheek (Artis library) in 1967. As a result the Artis Bibliotheek has become the library managing one of the largest collections of Linnaeana in the world.

J.G. de Man (1850-1930) was een Nederlandse bioloog die zijn leven wijdde aan de taxonomie van crustaceeën en nematoden. Hij beschreef honderden nieuwe geslachten en soorten in 181 artikelen en monografieën, veelal voorzien van door hem zelf vervaardigde (zeer nauwkeurige) tekeningen. Zijn werk is nog steeds van waarde. Het archief bevat o.a. correspondentie, reisverslagen, overzichten van zijn collecties preparaten, lijsten van beschreven soorten alsmede de originelen van de afbeeldingen in zijn publicaties. Het archief geeft inzicht in zijn manier van werken en op welke exemplaren hij zijn determinaties baseerde.

J.G. de Man (1850-1930) was a Dutch biologist who devoted his life to the taxonomy of crustaceans and nematodes. He described hundreds of new genera and species in 181 articles and monographs, often illustrated with his own (highly accurate) drawings. His work is still important. The archive includes correspondence, travel accounts, listings of his collections of preparations and lists of species described, as well as the originals of images included in his publications. The archive sheds light on his working method and the specimens that provided the basis for his identifications.

De collectie bestaat uit boeken, overdrukken en losse publicaties van bescheiden omvang (redes, dissertaties, brochures) die De Man in de loop van zijn leven heeft verworven, hetzij door aankoop, hetzij door schenking. Hij gebruikte deze bij zijn taxonomische werk. De publicaties gaan voornamelijk over crustaceeën en nematoden. Een klein deel betreft andere groepen uit het dierenrijk en algemeen-biologische onderwerpen. Ook zijn er publicaties over filosofie en politiek. Zij laat daarmee zien wat de bronnen waren die De Man gebruikte voor zijn werk met de twee groepen waarin hij zich specialiseerde en voor welke onderwerpen hij verder belangstelling had.

The collection consists of books, offprints and separate smaller publications such as speeches, dissertations and brochures, either bought by De Man or donated to him in the course of the years. He used this material for his taxonomic work. The publications mainly deal with crustaceans and nematodes. A small part is concerned with other animal groups and general biological subjects. Works on philosophy and politics are also featured. It illustrates which sources De Man used for his work on the two groups of animals he specialized in and the other subjects that had his interest.

Het archief van Theo J. Stomps, hoogleraar plantkunde aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam van 1910 tot 1945, bevat correspondentie, stukken over zijn opleiding, aantekeningen van wetenschappelijk onderzoek, materiaal betreffende publicaties en lezingen, eerbewijzen, herinneringen aan buitenlandse studiereizen, stukken over zijn colleges en (buitenlandse) excursies met studenten, alsmede over zijn directeurschap van de Hortus Botanicus. Het geeft inzicht in het werk van een Nederlands botanicus die honderden studenten geneeskunde, farmacie en plant- en dierkunde onderwees en onderzoek deed naar erfelijkheid.

The archive of Theo J. Stomps, full professor at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from 1910 until 1945, contains documents about his education, correspondence, notes of his scientific research, documents concerning publications and lectures, tokens of honour, souvenirs from his travels abroad, documents relating to his lectures for university students, and documents that followed from his directorship of the Hortus Botanicus of the University of Amsterdam. The archive illustrates the work of a Dutch botanist who trained hundreds of students of medicine, pharmacy and biology, and researched the mechanisms of heredity.

Karel Hendrik Voous (1920–2002) was een vooraanstaand ornitholoog en natuurbeschermer. In 1947–1964 was hij conservator van de Vogelafdeling van het Zoölogisch Museum te Amsterdam. Dankzij hem verdubbelde de collectie en veranderde de afdeling van een bescheiden, vooral educatief museum met hoofdzakelijk opgezette vogels tot een belangrijk internationaal georiënteerd onderzoeksinstituut. Ook was Voous buitengewoon hoogleraar in de zoögeografie (1955–1963) en vervolgens gewoon hoogleraar dierkunde (1964–1975) aan de Vrije Universiteit te Amsterdam. Het archief bevat correspondentie, reisdagboeken, manuscripten en fotoalbums. Een substantieel onderdeel bestaat uit het manuscript en typoscript van het door Voous geschreven boek In de ban van vogels. Geschiedenis van de beoefening van de ornithologie in Nederland in de twintigste eeuw uit 1995.

Karel Hendrik Voous (1920–2002) was a leading ornithologist and nature conservationist. Between 1947–1964 he was curator of the Bird Department of the Zoological Museum Amsterdam. The collection doubled thanks to his efforts, while he also transformed the department from a modest, mainly educational museum primarily rich in stuffed birds into a major internationally oriented research institute. Voous was also endowed professor of zoogeography (1955–1963), later full professor of zoology (1964–1975), at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The archive contains correspondence, travel diaries, manuscripts and photo albums. A substantial part of the archive consists of the manuscript and typescript of Voous’ In de ban van vogels. Geschiedenis van de beoefening van de ornithologie in Nederland in de twintigste eeuw, his history of the practice of ornithology in the Netherlands in the twentieth century, which was published in 1995.
