Cartografie

Het Bureau Hydrografie van het Departement van Marine is verantwoordelijk voor het in kaart brengen van het Nederlandse deel van het continentaal plat en de wateren rond de (voormalige) Nederlandse gebiedsdelen. Naast de publicaties van het bureau bevat de collectie ook zeekaarten van andere producenten. Het betreft zowel materiaal voor navigatie op zee als thematische cartografie. Het zwaartepunt ligt in de negentiende eeuw.

The Hydrographic Department of the Navy is responsible for mapping the Dutch part of the continental shelf and the waterways around (former) Dutch territories. In addition to publications by the department, the collection also contains nautical charts produced by others. The collection concerns thematic map-making as well as navigation at sea. The core of the collection is from the nineteenth century.

Het archief van de familie Covens bevat stukken over de familie en het familiebedrijf Covens & Mortier (1685–1866), dat in de achttiende en het begin van de negentiende eeuw succesvol was met het uitgeven van met name kaarten. De stukken zijn overwegend van persoonlijke en genealogische aard en geven informatie over de relaties binnen de familie Covens, het netwerk van de familie en wie er betrokken waren bij het bedrijf.

The archive of the Covens family contains documents on the family and the family firm of Covens & Mortier (1685–1866), a flourishing publishing company in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that specialised in maps. The documents are largely personal and genealogical and provide information on the relationships within the Covens family, the family’s network and the people involved in the firm.

Deze middelgrote collectie van circa 10.000 kaarten, merendeels uit de twintigste eeuw, heeft primair betrekking op Nederland en omringende landen. De collectie is afkomstig van het Economisch Geografisch Instituut, dat eertijds deel uitmaakte van de Erasmus Universiteit te Rotterdam.

This medium-sized collection of some 10,000 maps, largely dating from the twentieth century, focuses primarily on the Netherlands and neighbouring countries. The collection derives from the Economisch Geografisch Instituut (institute of economic geography), which was formerly a part of Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Het Koninklijk Nederlands Aardrijkskundig Genootschap (KNAG) zette zich vanaf 1873 in om de belangstelling in en de kennis van de aardrijkskunde te vergroten. Hiertoe werden enkele verzamelingen aangelegd, waaronder een bibliotheek en een collectie kaarten en atlassen. Beide werden in 1880 in beheer gegeven aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. De collectie beslaat in principe het gehele terrein van de geografie en cartografie. Het accent ligt op Nederland en de (voormalige) overzeese gebiedsdelen. Onder de kaarten zijn vele hoogtepunten uit de geschiedenis van de cartografie vanaf de zestiende eeuw.

From 1873 onwards the Royal Dutch Geographical Society (KNAG) dedicated itself to promoting the interest in and the knowledge of geography. In order to do this, a number of collections were started, including a library and a collection of maps and atlases. In 1880 both were given to the University of Amsterdam to manage. The collection essentially covers the entire scope of geography and map-making. The emphasis is on the Netherlands and (former) overseas territories. The collection of maps contains many highlights in the history of map-making from the sixteenth century onwards.

Deze collectie van circa 2.500 kaarten en folders, merendeels uit de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw, heeft betrekking op bewegwijzering en vormgeving van cartografisch materiaal. De kaarten dienden als voorbeeld en bron van inspiratie van vormgever, docent en grafisch ontwerper Paul Mijksenaar.

This collection of some 2,500 maps and leaflets, largely dating from the second half of the twentieth century, focuses on signposting and the design of cartographic materials. The maps served as a model and source of inspiration for designer, lecturer and graphic designer Paul Mijksenaar.

De collectie werd in 1910 aangekocht uit de winkelvoorraad van het beroemde Amsterdamse antiquariaat Fred. Muller & Co. De kaarten zijn voornamelijk afkomstig van Nederlandse atlassen uit de zestiende, zeventiende en achttiende eeuw. Daarnaast zijn er veel zelfstandig uitgegeven kaarten en kaarten van buitenlandse origine. De collectie is vanwege de talloze varianten in tekst, zetsel, impressum en drukplaat van groot carto-bibliografisch belang.

This collection of maps was bought in 1910 as part of the stock of the famous Amsterdam antiquarian bookshop 'Fred. Muller & Co'. The maps are mainly from Dutch atlases from the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Besides this, there are many independently published maps and maps of foreign origin. The collection is of major cartographic importance because of the numerous variations in text, type, imprint and printing plate.

Deze middelkleine collectie van circa 750 kaarten, merendeels uit de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw, heeft betrekking op (West-)Europa met een sterk accent op stadsplattegronden.

This fairly small collection of about 750 maps, largely dating from the second half of the twentieth century, relates to Europe, specifically Western Europe, with a strong focus on city maps.
