Boekwezen

Deel van het archief van het Amsterdams Boekverkopersgilde – een vereniging van beroepsgenoten in het boekenvak (boekverkopers, boekdrukkers en boekbinders) – dat in beheer is bij de Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak. Bevat correspondentie, notulen, afschriften van rekesten betreffende boekverkopingen en privileges, ordonnanties en registers van leden van dit gilde. Verder zijn er archivalia uit de negentiende en twintigste eeuw betreffende het beheer. Deze collectie biedt inzicht in de geschiedenis en organisatie van de boekhandel in Amsterdam en Holland van de zeventiende tot het begin van de negentiende eeuw.

This collection consists of the largest part of the archive of the booksellers' guild – an association of fellow craftsmen including booksellers, book printers and bookbinders – in Amsterdam, which is a part of the 'Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak' (Library of the Book Trade). The archive contains correspondence, minutes, copies of petitions concerning book auctions, membership lists and privileges and ordinances of the guild. Besides this, there are 19th and 20th century records of the management of the archive. The collection offers insight into the history and organization of the book trade in Amsterdam and Holland from the 17th to the first decades of the 19th centuries.

De Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak werd in 1845 opgericht als een vakbibliotheek voor leden van de Vereeniging ter bevordering van de belangen des Boekhandels. Later werd het verzamelbeleid verbreed tot de documentatie van de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse boekbedrijf. In 1958 werd de complete bibliotheek in bruikleen gegeven aan de Universiteitsbibliotheek Amsterdam. De collectie omvat een uitgebreide vakbibliotheek op gebied van het boekwezen (boekwetenschap, kopijrecht, typografie, grafische industrie, drukkerij, uitgeverij, boekhandel) en een grote verzameling bronnenmateriaal over de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse boek (boekproductie, boekhandel, boekwezen). De archieven van Nederlandse boekbedrijven en brancheorganisaties, boekhandelscatalogi, letterproeven vormen een belangrijk deel van de collectie. De Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak is een van de meest omvangrijke en veelzijdige boekhistorische collecties ter wereld. Voor de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse boekbedrijf vanaf de zeventiende eeuw omvat de collectie essentiële bronnen en documentatie.

The 'Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak', the library of the Book Trade, was founded as a professional library for members of the 'Vereeniging ter bevordering van de belangen des Boekhandels', the association promoting the interests of the book trade. Later the collection policy broadened and documentation on the history of the book trade was included. In 1958 the entire library was given on loan to the library of the University of Amsterdam. The collection contains an extensive professional library on books – including book history, copyright, typography, graphical industry, printing, publishing and book trade – and a large amount of source material about the history of books in the Netherlands – including the production of books, book trade and books in general. Important parts of the collection are the archives of Dutch book traders, booksellers' catalogues, catalogues of types and archives of printing businesses. Besides this, archives of a number of organizations and institutions active in the book trade are also kept. The library is one of the largest and most all-round book historical collections in the world. The collection contains essential sources and documents for the history of the Dutch book trade from the seventeenth century onwards.

De fotocollectie is afkomstig van Boekblad, nieuwsblad voor het boekenvak, en bestaat voor het grootste gedeelte uit zwart-witfoto’s en enkele kleurenfoto’s in diverse formaten. Deze zijn gebruikt in het tijdschrift tussen 1980 en 2007. Op de foto’s zijn Nederlandse en internationale auteurs, boekverkopers en andere personen uit het boekenvak te zien. Ook boekhandels, literaire evenementen in binnen- en buitenland en prijsuitreikingen zijn afgebeeld. Het belang van de collectie betreft de beeldvorming in foto’s van de hele keten van boekproductie, boekpromotie en boekdistributie.

The photography collection is derived from Boekblad, a Dutch book trade newspaper, and largely consists of black and white photographs and a number of colour photographs in various formats that were featured in the periodical between 1980 and 2007. The photos show authors from the Netherlands and abroad, booksellers and other people active in the book trade. Others show bookshops, national and international literary events and award ceremonies. The collection’s significance lies in the range of images that capture the process from book production and promotion to book distribution.

De Stichting Collectieve Propaganda van het Nederlandse Boek (CPNB) is opgericht door de branche-organisaties van boekverkopers en uitgevers, en heeft tot doel het lezen van boeken en het boekenbezit te stimuleren. De collectie bevat promotiemateriaal dat ter ondersteuning van diverse landelijke campagnes is verspreid. De collectie biedt een overzicht van de collectieve boekpromotie in Nederland, vanaf de start in de jaren dertig van de twintigste eeuw.

In 1983 the 'Stichting Collectieve Propaganda van het Nederlandse Boek', an institution promoting the Dutch book, was established by sector organizations of book sellers and book publishers. The institution aims to stimulate the reading and possession of books in general. The collection contains promotional material that was circulated in support of a range of national campaigns. It offers an overview of collective book promotion in the Netherlands from the start of the nineteen thirties.

De Collectieve Propaganda van het Nederlandse Boek is sinds 1983 opgedragen aan een daartoe speciaal opgerichte stichting. Het archief van deze stichting (1983-2008) bevat vergaderstukken, stukken over promotionele activiteiten in het algemeen en stukken over door de stichting georganiseerde campagnes. Het promotiemateriaal is in een andere collectie verzameld.

The Collectieve Propaganda van het Nederlandse Boek (Collective Promotion of Dutch Books) has been the responsibility of a dedicated foundation since 1983. The archive of this foundation (1983-2008) contains documents of meetings, items relating to promotional activities in general and to campaigns set up by the foundation. The promotional material is kept in a separate collection.

De collectie bestaat uit circa 1500 exemplaren van ruim 500 fondsveilingcatalogi. Circa 70% van de 1500 exemplaren is geannoteerd, hetzij alleen met prijzen, hetzij met prijzen en kopers van de geveilde goederen. Fondsveilingen waren veilingen waar restanten van een of meer uitgevers aan collega's uit de boekhandel en uitgeverij verkocht werden. Toen in de negentiende eeuw het aantal uitgevers toenam, kwamen fondsveilingen regelmatig voor. Vaak werd het auteursrecht mee verkocht.

Stock auctions were auctions at which the remaining stock of one or more publishers was sold to colleagues in the book or publishing trades. When in the nineteenth century the number of publishers grew stock auctions became a regular occurrence. Often the copyright was part of the sale.

Het archief is afkomstig van de Nederlandse Boekverkopersbond (NBb), deze organisatie behartigt de belangen van Nederlandse boekhandels. De inhoud bestaat onder meer uit vergaderstukken en notulen, correspondentie, administratie en documenten over de organisatie en activiteiten van de NBb. Het archief geeft een goed beeld van de keten van boekproductie, boekpromotie, boekdistributie en boekconsumptie in Nederland gedurende de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw.

Stichting Speurwerk betreffende het Boek (SSB) was een door de Vereeniging ter Bevordering van de Belangen des Boekhandels opgerichte instelling die onderzoek verrichtte naar de diverse aspecten van de boekenmarkt, zowel op het gebied van het consumentengedrag als de positie van de verschillende brancheorganisaties (uitgeverij, boekhandel, distributie).

Stichting Speurwerk betreffende het Boek (SSB) was an agency set up by the Vereeniging ter Bevordering van de Belangen des Boekhandels (association for the promotion of booksellers’ interests) to research various aspects of the book market regarding consumer behaviour as well as the position of the several trade organisations (publishing, bookselling, distribution).
