Het archief van het antiquariaat en veilinghuis Beijers (1865-2005) geeft een gedetailleerd inzicht in het functioneren van een internationaal vermaarde firma, waarvan de reputatie terug te voeren is op de bijzondere kwaliteit van de geveilde boeken en (privé)bibliotheken.

The archive of Beijers rare book dealer and auction house (1865-2005) provides a detailed picture of the way an internationally renowned firm functioned. Its fame relies on the extraordinary quality of the auctioned books and libraries, including private ones.

Het archief is gevormd door Uitgeverij Brill (1848-heden) in Leiden, de opvolger van de firma Luchtmans (1683-1848). Het bedrijf kende drie afdelingen: de drukkerij/zetterij, de uitgeverij en het antiquariaat. De nadruk lag voor het bedrijf zelf op de drukkerij. Het archief heeft betrekking op de jaren 1848-2003. Het is verre van compleet. De uitgaven van Brill waren en zijn met name gericht op oosterse talen, culturen, godsdiensten en geschiedenis. Hierdoor ontstond het zeer uitgebreide letterfonds van de drukkerij met onder meer Chinese karakters en andere oriëntaalse letters.

The collection consists of the archive of the publisher Brill (1848-present) in Leiden, the successor to the publisher Luchtmans (1683-1848) also in Leiden. The company consisted of three sections: the printing and composing room, the publishers and the antiquarian bookshop. The emphasis of the company was on the printing business. The archive concerns the period 1848-2003 and is anything but complete. The Brill publications were and still are primarily oriented towards oriental languages, cultures, religions and history. As a result the company acquired a large and extensive number of typefaces, with among other things, Chinese characters and other oriental fonts.

Het archief bevat de administratie van veilinghuis, antiquariaat, uitgeverij en boekhandel Burgersdijk & Niermans (ca. 1894-1959). Het materiaal in dit archief kan inzicht bieden in (het financiële aspect van) het boekbedrijf in Nederland van het einde van de 19e tot het midden van de 20e eeuw.

The archive contains the administration of auctioneering firm, antiquarian bookshop, publisher and bookshop Burgersdijk & Niermans (ca. 1894-1959). The archival material can give insight in (the financial aspect of) the book trade in the Netherlands from the end of the 19th until the middle of the 20th century.

A. Gerits & Son B.V. is een boekverkoper die gespecialiseerd is in het verkopen van zeldzame boeken en boekencollecties uit de geesteswetenschappen en sociale wetenschappen. Gedurende haar bestaan heeft de onderneming vele zeldzame en bijzondere collecties verkocht aan particulieren en universiteitsbibliotheken in Europa, de Verenigde Staten en Japan.

De zaak werd oorspronkelijk gestart in 1981 door Anton Gerits (1930) als A. Gerits – Rare Books nadat hij eerder ervaring met het boekenvak had opgedaan bij Nijhoff, Ludwig Rosenthal’s Antiquariaat en Elsevier. Door zijn grote internationale netwerk wist Gerits veel bijzondere collecties in het buitenland onder te brengen.

Het archief bevat voornamelijk correspondentie met (potentiële) klanten, facturen van in- en verkoop en overige financiële administratie uit de periode 1985-2000. Ook bevat het archief catalogi van A. Gerits & Son B.V., lijsten met aangeboden collecties en de kopers daarvan en enkele documenten van zakelijke reizen.

A. Gerits & Son B.V. is a bookdealer specialised in selling rare books and book collections in the field of the humanities and social sciences. Throughout its existence, the firm has sold numerous rare and special collections to private buyers and university libraries in Europe, the United States and Japan.

The firm was originally established by Anton Gerits (1930) in 1981 as A. Gerits – Rare Books. Gerits previously gained experience in the book business working for Nijhoff, Ludwig Rosenthal’s Antiquariaat and Elsevier. Thanks to his large international network, Gerits managed to find a home for many a special collection abroad.

The archive mainly contains correspondence with existing or prospective clients, purchase and sales invoices and other financial administration from the years 1985-2000. The archive furthermore includes catalogues issued by A. Gerits & Son B.V., lists of collections for sale and their buyers as well as a few business trip documents.

Tussen 1959 en 1979 voerden R.W. Haentjens en H.L. Gumbert samen de wetenschappelijke uitgeverij Haentjens Dekker & Gumbert. De uitgeverij was gevestigd in Utrecht in het pand van Antiquariaat en veilinghuis J.L. Beijers, waar Gumbert eveneens in dienst was. Het archief bestaat voornamelijk uit dossiers met betrekking tot uitgegeven titels.

Between 1959 and 1979 R.W. Haentjens and H.L. Gumbert together ran the academic publishing firm Haentjens Dekker & Gumbert. The firm was located in Utrecht on the premises of J.L. Beijers. Gumbert also worked for this rare book dealer and auction house. The archive mainly includes files relating to published titles.

Het persoonlijke en bedrijfsmatige archief van de antiquaar Menno Hertzberger met nadruk op de periode na de Tweede Wereldoorlog tot het overlijden van Hertzberger in 1982. Hertzberger was antiquaar, uitgever en veilinghouder te Amsterdam en (mede)oprichter van diverse invloedrijke organisaties. Het archief biedt evenzeer inzicht in het persoonlijke leven van Hertzberger als in de bedrijfsvoering van de firma.

The personal and commercial files of antiquarian Menno Hertzberger with an emphasis on the period from World War II to the death of Hertzberger in 1982. Hertzberger was an antiquarian, publisher and auctioneer in Amsterdam en (co-)founder of various influential institutions. The archive provides insight in both Hertzberger's personal and commercial life.

Op initiatief van Menno Hertzberger, de Nederlandse antiquaar en voorzitter van de Nederlandse Vereniging van Antiquaren, werd in 1947 in Amsterdam een voorbereidende conferentie gehouden ter oprichting van een internationale organisatie van antiquaren: de International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB) of Ligue Internationale de la Librairie Ancienne (LILA). Het eerste internationale congres werd in 1948 gehouden in Kopenhagen. In de periode daarna werden in wisselende steden jaarlijks congressen gehouden. De ILAB publiceerde een adresboek en een woordenboek (Dictionary for the antiquarian booktrade in French, English, German, Swedish, Danish, Italian, Spanish and Dutch).

Initiated by the Dutch antiquarian bookseller and president of the Dutch Association of Antiquarian Booksellers, Menno Hertzberger, a preliminary conference was held in Amsterdam in 1947 prior to the establishment of an international organisation of antiquarians: the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB) or Ligue Internationale de la Librairie Ancienne (LILA). The first international conference of ILAB was held in Copenhagen in 1948. In the following years annual conferences were organised in various cities. In 1951-1952 ILAB published a directory and in 1956 a dictionary, edited by Hertzberger, was published: Dictionary for the antiquarian booktrade in French, English, German, Swedish, Danish, Italian, Spanish and Dutch.

Het archief van Antiquariaat Frits Knuf is vernoemd naar de oprichter van het antiquariaat, Frits (F.A.M.) Knuf (1925-1999). Hij opende in 1953 zijn eerste zelfstandige boekwinkel in Amsterdam. In 1996 verkocht Frits Knuf zijn antiquariaat aan zijn medewerker Anita van Elferen. Het antiquariaat werd door haar voortgezet onder de naam Frits Knuf Antiquarian Books en is tegenwoordig actief onder de naam Knuf Rare Books.

Het archief bestaat voor het grootste deel uit voorraadlijsten en catalogi. Deze vermelden onder meer werken met het thema boekgeschiedenis, uitgaven uit de zeventiende- en achttiende-eeuwse Nederlandse letterkunde en boeken over typografie, bibliografie, papier en bindtechnieken. Het archief bestaat verder uit financiële administratie. Dit zijn voornamelijk uitgaande facturen.

The archive of Antiquariaat Frits Knuf is named after founder Frits (F.A.M.) Knuf (1925-1999), who in 1953 opened his first independent rare bookshop in Amsterdam. In 1996 Frits Knuf sold his antiquarian book business to his colleague Anita van Elferen. She continued the bookshop as Frits Knuf Antiquarian Books, later under the name Knuf Rare Books.

The archive mainly consists of stock lists and catalogues. Some of the themes listed are book history, seventeenth-century and eighteenth-century Dutch literature, typography, bibliography, paper and binding techniques. Accounting, mainly outgoing invoices, make up the rest of the archive.

Ludwig Rosenthal’s Antiquariat werd in 1869 opgericht in Duitsland. Dit archief bevat de documenten van het Nederlandse filiaal dat in 1937 werd opgericht door Fritz Rosenthal en zijn vrouw Hilde Rosenthal-Wolf toen het joodse familiebedrijf in München noodgedwongen werd overgedragen aan een Arische eigenaar. Het archief bevat voornamelijk administratie en correspondentie over de aan- en verkoop van boeken en collecties uit de periode 1946-2005 en geannoteerde catalogi vanaf de oprichting van dit internationaal gerenommeerde antiquariaat.

Ludwig Rosenthal’s Antiquariat was founded in Germany in 1869. The archive contains the documents of the Dutch branch that had been established by Fritz Rosenthal and his wife Hilde Rosenthal-Wolf in 1937 when the Munich-based Jewish family firm had been forcibly turned over to an Aryan owner. The archive mainly contains administration and correspondence about the purchase and sale of books and collections from the years 1946-2005 and annotated catalogues from the start of this internationally renowned antiquarian firm.

Meijer Elte N.V. was een antiquariaat dat vanaf 1901 meer dan tachtig jaar was gevestigd in het centrum van Den Haag. Het internationaal bekende antiquariaat specialiseerde zich in mooi geïllustreerde en kostbare boeken uit de periode tussen de vroege zeventiende en vroege negentiende eeuw.

Het archief bevat met name financiële administratie en correspondentie met (mogelijke) klanten en verkopers vanaf 1909 tot en met het sluiten van de winkel in 1984. Daarnaast maken ook bouwtekeningen van het pand op Korte Poten 13 (circa 1917) en enkele foto’s en clichés deel uit van dit archief.

The antiquarian bookseller Meijer Elte N.V. had been established in the centre of The Hague for over eight decades since 1901. The internationally known bookseller specialised in beautifully illustrated and precious books from the early seventeenth to the early nineteenth centuries.

The archive principally contains financial administration and correspondence with existing or prospective clients and sellers from 1909 until 1984, when the shop closed. The archive also includes building plans for the building on 13, Korte Poten (circa 1917) as well as a number of photographs and stereotypes.

Het archief van de Nederlandsche Vereeniging van Antiquaren (1935-2000) is weliswaar fragmentarisch overgeleverd maar geeft toch een goed beeld van de geschiedenis van de NVvA, onder andere van haar rol bij de oprichting van de internationale organisatie van antiquaren ILAB.

The archive of the Nederlandsche Vereeniging van Antiquaren (Dutch Association of Antiquarian Booksellers, 1935-2000), has only been partly preserved, but gives a good impression of the history of the NVvA, including its involvement in establishing the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB).

Het archief van boekhandel Nijhof & Lee (1971-2014) bestaat uit bedrijfsadministratie, aangevuld met persoonlijke stukken van de eigenaars Warren Lee en Frank Nijhof.

The archive of Nijhof & Lee booksellers (1971-2014) contains business administration as well as some personal documents by the firm’s owners, Warren Lee and Frank Nijhof.

Het archief van de firma Martinus Nijhoff bevat bedrijfsarchivalia van de boekhandel en de uitgeverij; behalve antiquariaatscatalogi is vrijwel geen materiaal bewaard gebleven van het antiquariaat en het veilinghuis. Er zijn veel dossiers met correspondentie over uitgaven. Tot halverwege de jaren 1960 is de leiding in handen gebleven van telgen uit de familie Nijhoff. Ook zijn hier persoonlijke archieven van Martinus Nijhoff, Wouter Nijhoff en Wouter Nijhoff Pz. aanwezig.

The archive of the firm of Martinus Nijhoff comprises the company archives of its rare book shop and publishing house; apart from antiquarian book catalogues, virtually no documents have been preserved of the antiquarian book shop and the auction house. There are numerous files with correspondence on publications. The company remained in the family until the mid-1960s; the collection also contains the personal archives of Martinus Nijhoff, Wouter Nijhoff and Wouter Nijhoff Pz..

C.P.J. van der Peet richtte eind jaren veertig in Indonesië en Amsterdam boekhandels en uitgeverijen op. Hij richtte zich in Indonesië op boeken voor het onderwijs en in Nederland op kinderboeken, dichtbundels en non-fictie. Vanaf 1956 was hij alleen nog in Nederland actief en startte hij ook een antiquariaat. Vanaf 1967 beperkte hij zijn activiteiten tot het antiquariaat. Het archief bevat veel productiedossiers van uit te geven publicaties, met werk van bekende schrijvers en illustratoren uit de periode 1949-1967, en is daarmee van belang voor het literair-historisch onderzoek naar die periode. Daarnaast bevat het archief een waardevolle selectie met de hand bijgeschreven antiquariaatscatalogi.

In the late 1940s, C.P.J. van der Peet established bookshops and publishing houses in Indonesia and in Amsterdam. In Indonesia he focused on books for the education market and in the Netherlands on children’s books, poetry volumes and non-fiction. From 1956 he was only active in the Netherlands, where he also began an antiquarian book business. From 1967 he devoted his attention exclusively to his rare bookshop. The archive contains a great number of production files of books that were scheduled to be published, including works by well-known authors and illustrators from the years 1949-1967, making it an important source for literary-historical research into the period. In addition the archive contains a valuable selection of annotated antiquarian catalogues.

De collectie antiquariaatscatalogi van Wed. J.R. van Rossum (ca. 1871-1922) biedt inzicht in de boeken die werden gekocht en gelezen in katholieke kringen vanaf de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw.

The collection of antiquarian book catalogues brought together by the widow J.R. van Rossum (c.1871-1922) sheds light on the kind of books that were bought and read in Roman-Catholic circles in the Netherlands from the second half of the nineteenth century.

Het archief is afkomstig van de bedrijven van G.T.N. Suringar en zijn zoon Hugo, die in Leeuwarden een boekwinkel, een drukkerij/uitgeverij en een veilinghuis dreven. Het archief beslaat de periode 1809-1918. Het archief omvat onder meer circa 7000 brieven van en aan G.T.N. en Hugo Suringar en zeventien registers met uitgaande brieven van de boekhandel en uitgeverij uit de periode 1822-1882. Daarnaast zijn er administratieve stukken met betrekking tot de bedrijfsvoering van de bedrijven van G.T.N. en Hugo Suringar. Een groot aantal manuscripten, drukproeven, uiteindelijke drukken, illustratiemateriaal en prospectussen is overgeleverd van de door vader en zoon Suringar uitgegeven auteurs. Het archief biedt inzicht in de organisatie van een vooraanstaande negentiende-eeuwse, voornamelijk literair getinte boekhandel en uitgeverij, in de relatie met auteurs en collega's, alsmede in het beoogde publiek en de klantenkring in de firma. The archive stems from the companies of G.T.N. Suringar and his son Hugo, who ran a bookshop, a printing and publishing house and an auction house in Leeuwarden. The archive covers the years 1809-1918 and includes some 7,000 letters by and to G.T.N. and Hugo Suringar as well as 17 registers of outgoing letters by the bookshop and publishing house dating from the years 1822-1882. In addition there are clerical documents relating to the running of the firms of G.T.N. and Hugo Suringar. A large number of manuscripts, proofs, finished books, illustration materials and brochures have survived relating to the authors who were published by father and son Suringar. The archive throws light on the organisation of a prominent nineteenth-century, mainly literary, bookshop and publishing house, on the relationship with authors and colleagues as well as the intended audience and the firm’s customers.
