Caricatures and cartoons

De in 1945 opgerichte Algemene Studenten Vereniging Amsterdam (ASVA) behartigt de belangen van de Amsterdamse student, onder meer op het gebied van de huisvesting. Om aandacht op de woningnood te vestigen, schreef de ASVA in 1956 een cartoonwedstrijd uit. Er kwamen ruim 200 cartoons binnen, waarvan er 187 in deze collectie bewaard gebleven zijn. Ze geven een humoristische kijk op de slechte studentenhuisvesting van toen.

The ASVA (Amsterdam Student Union) was founded in 1945 to promote the interests of students in Amsterdam, for instance with regard to student housing. In order to call attention to the lack of suitable student housing the ASVA organized a cartoon competition in 1956. More than 200 cartoons were received of which 186 have survived which together form this collection. They offer a humorous view on the poor student housing conditions of that time.

The collection includes satirical cartoons by Tom Janssen made in the years 1977-1980 for Folia Civitatis, the magazine of Amsterdam’s academic community.

Hans Kresse (1921-1992) was een Nederlandse striptekenaar en illustrator die onder meer bekend is van de strips Eric de Noorman en de Indianenreeks. Hij wordt beschouwd als een van de beste striptekenaars uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis. Deze collectie bevat publicaties van Hans G. Kresse, publicaties waarvoor hij illustraties of omslagen verzorgde, artikelen en krantenknipsels over het leven en werk van Kresse en verzamelobjecten (bv. sigarenbandjes en stickers) gebaseerd op zijn werk.

Hans Kresse (1921-1992) was a Dutch comic artist and illustrator who is known for such comic strips as Eric de Noorman and the Indianenreeks. He is regarded as one of the best comic artists in Dutch history. This collection contains publications by Hans G. Kresse himself, publications for which he provided illustrations or book jackets, articles and newspaper cuttings about his life and work as well as collectibles (such as cigar bands and stickers) that are based on his work.

The collection includes satirical prints by Willy Lohmann, made in the years 1980-1985 for Folia Civitatis, the magazine of Amsterdam’s academic community.

Georges Mazure (1919-1980) was illustrator, striptekenaar, reclametekenaar en schrijver. Het archief bevat vele honderden illustraties die Mazure maakte voor feuilletons en korte verhalen in tijdschriften en boeken. Daarnaast zitten er tien complete stripverhalen in en een aantal losse stroken, al dan niet geïnkt. Het archief is van belang omdat het vrijwel het complete oeuvre omvat van een belangrijke tekenaar uit de naoorlogse periode die alle tekenpaden bewandelde.

Georges Mazure (1919-1980) was an illustrator, comics and advertising artist and writer. The archive contains hundreds of illustrations made by Mazure for serials and short stories in magazines and books. It also includes ten complete comics and a number of loose strips, inked or uninked. The archive is important because it contains the virtually complete oeuvre of a major artist from the post-war period who explored all avenues of drawing.

De collectie bestaat uit spotprenten en karikaturen betreffende de Universiteit van Amsterdam, het studentenleven en het hoger onderwijs van de hand van onder anderen Johan Braakensiek, M.B.E. Nilant, Tom Jansen en Willy Lohman, voornamelijk uit de periode 1880-1985.

The collection consists of cartoons and caricatures related to the University of Amsterdam, to university life and to Dutch higher education in general. They are mainly from the period 1880-1985 and were made by, among others, Johan Braakensiek, M.B.E. Nilant, Tom Jansen and Willy Lohman.

Deze collectie bevat het werk van de bekende Nederlandse tekenaar Jo Spier (1900-1978) en is bijeengebracht door de Haarlemse antiquaar Ab van der Steur (1938-2012). De collectie bevat bundels met publicaties van Spier, illustraties die hij maakte voor het werk van opdrachtgevers en efemeer drukwerk, zoals reclames en brochures.

De tekeningen en cartoons van Spier verschenen vanaf de jaren twintig van de vorige eeuw regelmatig in De Telegraaf en konden op veel waardering rekenen waarna hij ook werd ingeschakeld om advertenties voor het bedrijfsleven te maken. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog verhuisde Spier naar de Verenigde Staten maar bleef tekeningen maken voor Nederlandse media en bedrijven.

This collection contains the work of the well-known Dutch illustrator Jo Spier (1900-1978) and was brought together by the Haarlem antiquarian bookseller Ab van der Steur (1938-2012). The collection includes volumes of publications by Spier, commissioned illustrations made for the work of clients and ephemeral printed work such as advertisements and brochures.

From the 1920s, Spier’s drawings and cartoons were regularly published in the newspaper De Telegraaf and were well received. His popularity earned him commissions for advertisements from commercial clients. After WWII Spier moved to the United States, but he continued to produce drawings for Dutch media and companies.
