De Stichting Wetenschappelijk Duinonderzoek (SWD, 1948–1980) had als doel het bevorderen en coördineren van biologisch en geomorfologisch onderzoek van de duinen en aangrenzende kustgebieden in Nederland. Daartoe richtte de SWD biologische onderzoekstations in op Voorne (Weevers’ Duin) en Terschelling (Schellingerland). De SWD verstrekte subsidies voor (promotie)onderzoek gericht op flora, fauna en maritiem-geologische onderwerpen. Ze verkreeg haar inkomsten door donaties van particulieren en instellingen, uit de exploitatie van de onderzoekstations en door subsidies van de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Zuiver-Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (ZWO). In 1958 droeg de SWD het beheer van Weevers’ Duin over aan het Instituut voor Oecologisch Onderzoek (IOO) en in 1959 dat van Schellingerland aan het Rijksinstituut voor Veldbiologisch Onderzoek ten behoeve van het Natuurbehoud (RIVON). De SWD bleef een stimulerende en coördinerende rol spelen bij het duinonderzoek vanuit de beide onderzoekstations. Het archief bestaat in hoofdzaak uit stukken die betrekking hebben op het ontstaan en functioneren van de SWD en van de beide onderzoekstations. Vermeldenswaard zijn de geïllustreerde gastenboeken van het biologisch station Schellingerland. Voorts bevat het archief rapporteringen van systematische waarnemingen van flora en (avi)fauna op Terschelling uit de jaren 1957–1983.

The Stichting Wetenschappelijk Duinonderzoek (SWD, a foundation for scientific research into dunes, 1948–1980) was set up to promote and coordinate biological and geomorphological research into the dunes and adjoining coastal areas in the Netherlands. To this end the SWD established biological field stations in Voorne in the province of South Holland (Weevers’ Duin) and on the island of Terschelling (Schellingerland). The SWD provided grants for research, including PhD studies, into flora, fauna and marine geology subjects. The foundation’s income came from private and institutional donors, the running of the field stations and funding from the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Zuiver-Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (ZWO, the Netherlands Organization for Pure Scientific Research). In 1958 the SWD transferred the management of Weevers’ Duin to the Instituut voor Oecologisch Onderzoek (IOO, the Institute for Ecological Research), and in 1959 it transferred that of Schellingerland to the Rijksinstituut voor Veldbiologisch Onderzoek ten behoeve van het Natuurbehoud (RIVON). The SWD continued to stimulate and coordinate dune research within the two field stations. The archive mainly consists of documents relating to the origin and functioning of the SWD and the two field stations. The illustrated guest books of the Schellingerland biological station are particularly noteworthy. The archive furthermore contains reports of systematic observations of plants, animals and birds at Terschelling in the years 1957–1983.
