Verzameling boeken van de Italiaanse drukker en lettersnijder Giambattista Bodoni (1740-1813), uit het bezit van de Leidse boekdrukker en uitgever Albertus Willem Sijthoff (1829-1913). De uitgaven van Bodoni behoren tot de hoogtepunten van de achttiende-eeuwse boektypografie. Deze collectie biedt uitgebreid overzicht van Bodoni's werk als lettersnijder en boekdrukker.

A collection of books by the Italian printer and typecutter Giambattista Bodoni (1740-1813), formerly owned by the Leiden book printer and publisher Albertus Willem Sijthoff (1829-1913). Editions by Bodoni are among the highlights of eighteenth-century book typography. This collection offers a comprehensive overview of Bodoni’s career as a typecutter and book printer.

De letterproevencollectie is door zijn omvang en samenstelling van internationale betekenis. Het materiaal is voor het merendeel afkomstig uit de Typografische Bibliotheek van Tetterode en de Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak. De collectie geeft een vrij volledig beeld van de drukletterproductie in Nederland van het midden van de achttiende eeuw tot heden. Daarnaast zijn er vele buitenlandse proeven uit de negentiende eeuw tot heden, waarbij met name het Duitse materiaal uit de twintigste eeuw vermelding verdient. Ook zijn er vele Nederlandse drukkerijproeven aanwezig. De letterproevencollectie is interessant voor design- en boekhistorici. Ontwerpers vinden er modellen in voor revivals of inspiratie voor nieuwe typen. Sinds de jaren negentig van de twintigste eeuw heeft de belangstelling voor letter- en grafisch ontwerpen een hoge vlucht genomen, waarvan ook het letterontwerpen profiteerde.

The collection of type founders specimens is of international significance in terms of size and scope. The materials largely derive from the Typografische Bibliotheek van Tetterode (the Tetterode collection) and the Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak (library of the book trade). The collection offers a fairly complete overview of the typeface production in the Netherlands from the middle of the eighteenth century until the present. In addition, the collection includes numerous foreign type specimens from the nineteenth century to the present, notably German materials of the twentieth century. The collection is also rich in printers’ specimens. The collection of type founders specimens is of interest to design historians and book historians. Designers will find inspiration for design revivals or new typefaces. The interest in letter design and graphic design has greatly increased since the 1990s, which also led to greater interest in the designing of letters.

Deze collectie geeft een beeld van de letter in met name zijn toepassingen voor reclame, van posters (met houten letters) tot gevel- of winkelbelettering (met geschilderde letters).

This collection gives an idea of letters as used especially in advertising, from posters (using wooden type) to façade or shop lettering (using painted lettering).
