Eli Heimans (1861-1914) en Jac. P. Thijsse (1865-1945) waren twee Amsterdamse onderwijzers die rond 1900 in hun lessen op de scholen waar zij werkten, via boeken en artikelen in kranten en tijdschriften die zij samen en afzonderlijk schreven en met het door hen opgerichte tijdschrift De levende natuur een groot (en nadrukkelijk jong) publiek wilden informeren over en enthousiasmeren voor de wilde natuur in Nederland. Hun werk had succes: hun publicaties werden goed gelezen, (jonge) natuurliefhebbers trokken het veld in om de natuur te bestuderen en ervan te genieten, natuurliefhbbers sloten zich aaneen in organisaties, en bij de verschillende overheden werd aandacht voor de natuur tot beleid gemaakt. Hun inspanningen kunnen beschouwd worden als de aanzet tot de huidige georganiseerde en gereglementeerde natuurstudie, -educatie en -bescherming in Nederland. In 1977 werd de Stichting Heimans en Thijsse Bibliotheek en Archief opgericht om de geschiedenis van de natuurstudie, -educatie en -bescherming in Nederland te documenteren. In 1993 werd deze voortgezet als de Heimans en Thijsse Stichting. De stichting bouwde door voornamelijk schenkingen een uitgebreide bibliotheek op met boeken, tijdschriften, rapporten, nota's, onderzoeksverslagen etc. op het gebied van de natuurstudie, -beleving, -bescherming en -educatie in Nederland en de overzeese gebieden, alsmede een grote verzameling documentatiemateriaal en losse archivalia over deze onderwerpen en enkele (al dan niet complete) archieven van organisaties en personen die werkzaam waren op de genoemde terreinen. In 2015 werden de archieven alsmede de losse archivalia en de unieke stukken die zich in het documentatiemateriaal bevonden in bruikleen gegeven aan de afdeling Bijzondere Collecties van de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

Eli Heimans (1861-1914) and Jac. P. Thijsse (1865-1945) were two teachers at primary schools in Amsterdam who around 1900 tried to raise interest for the indiginous Dutch nature among a broad (and notably young) audience with their teaching, books, articles in magazines and newspapers and the journal De levende natuur (The living nature) they founded. They were quite successful: their publications were well read, all over the country (young) people went out to study and enjoy nature, nature enthousiasts flocked together in organisations, and government administrations operating at different levels made the protection of nature a part of their policy. The work of Heimans and Thijsse can be considered as the start of today's organized and formalized study, education and protection of nature in the Netherlands. In 1977, the Stichting Heimans en Thijsse Bibliotheek en Archief (Heimans and Thijsse Library and Archive) was founded with the aim to document the history of the study, education and protection of nature in the Netherlands. In 1993 it was continued as the Heimans en Thijsse Stichting (Heimans en Thijsse Society). The society set up (mostly through donations) a large library with books, journals, reports, accounts, papers etc. covering nature study, experience, protection and education in the Netherlands and former colonies. A vast collection of records, stray archival documents and (partial) archives of organisations and private persons active on the aformentioned subjects was brought together as well. In 2015, the archives, stray archival material and the unique items among the records were transfered as permanent loan to the department of Special Collections of the University of Amsterdam.

Het persoonlijke en bedrijfsmatige archief van de antiquaar Menno Hertzberger met nadruk op de periode na de Tweede Wereldoorlog tot het overlijden van Hertzberger in 1982. Hertzberger was antiquaar, uitgever en veilinghouder te Amsterdam en (mede)oprichter van diverse invloedrijke organisaties. Het archief biedt evenzeer inzicht in het persoonlijke leven van Hertzberger als in de bedrijfsvoering van de firma.

The personal and commercial files of antiquarian Menno Hertzberger with an emphasis on the period from World War II to the death of Hertzberger in 1982. Hertzberger was an antiquarian, publisher and auctioneer in Amsterdam en (co-)founder of various influential institutions. The archive provides insight in both Hertzberger's personal and commercial life.

Carel Jacob (Karel) Hildesheim (1875-1931) vertaalde verhalen en poëzie uit het Jiddisch. In 1926 werd de vertaling die hij maakte van 'Joodsche volksverhalen' van J.L. Perets (1851-1915) uitgegeven bij de Wereldbibliotheek. Het archief bestaat uit zijn manuscripten van vertalingen in het Nederlands. Het merendeel betreft vertalingen van het werk van J.L. Perets (1851-1915), waaronder 'Joodse volksverhalen'. Verder zijn er onder andere vertalingen van werk van Salomon An-Ski (1863-1920), S.G. Frug (1860-1916), Morris Rosenfeld (1862-1923), Sholem Asch (1880-1957), Chaim Nachman Bialik (1873-1934), Sholem Aleichem (1859-1916) en Fritz Löhner-Beda (1883-1942).

Carel Jacob Hildesheim (1875-1931) translated stories and poetry from Yiddish. His translation of Jewish Folktales by J.L. Perets (1851-1915) was published by De Wereldbibliotheek in 1926. The archive of Carel Jacob Hildesheim features manuscripts of his translations into Dutch. The majority of these manuscripts are translations of the work of J.L. Perets. Other translations include works by Salomon An-Ski (1863-1920), S.G. Frug (1860-1916), Morris Rosenfeld (1862-1923), Sholem Asch (1880-1957), Chaim Nachman Bialik (1873-1934), Sholem Aleichem (1859-1916) and Fritz Löhner-Beda (1883-1942).

Uri Meijer Philip Hillesum werkte lang als docent aan het Nederlands-Israëlitisch Seminarium in Amsterdam. Het archief bevat alleen persoonlijke stukken, zoals diploma's en documenten betreffende zijn dienstverband.

Uri Meijer Philip Hillesum was employed for many years as a teacher at the Amsterdam Rabbinical Seminary. The archive only contains personalia, including diplomas and papers relating to his employment.

De drukkerij Joh. Jesse (1888-1976) was gevestigd in Amsterdam. Zij was aanvankelijk gespecialiseerd in kantoorboeken, losbladige zakboekjes en klein gelegenheidsdrukwerk. Tijdens het laatste jaar van de Duitse bezetting drukte Jesse Het (illegale) Parool. Tevens verzorgde Jesse drukwerk voor de voetbalclub A.F.C. Ajax. Het archief bestaat voor een groot deel uit financiële administratie en enveloppen met voorbeeldexemplaren van drukorders.

The printing office Johannes Jesse (1888-1976) was established in Amsterdam. At first it specialized in office books, loose-leaf notebooks and small occasional printed matter. In the last year of the German occupation Jesse printed the (illegal) newspaper Het Parool. Besides this, Jesse printed for the Dutch football club A.F.C. Ajax. The archive consists for a large part of financial documents and envelopes with examples of printing orders.

De collectie joodse verenigingen is door de Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana verzameld. Het bevat materiaal van 220 joodse verenigingen, commissies en instellingen op het gebied van liefdadigheid, gezondheidszorg, religieuze en culturele activiteiten, onderwijs en maatschappelijke belangen van voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Van elke vereniging of instelling zijn er een of meer stukken verzameld. Het merendeel van deze stukken bestaat uit door de organisaties verspreid drukwerk.

The Jewish Associations collection in the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana contains material from various associations from before the Second World War. In all, it has material from 220 Jewish associations, committees and institutions in the fields of charity, health care, religious and cultural activities, education and social concerns. The collection contains one or more papers for each association or institution. The majority of the papers consist of printed material distributed by the various organisations.

Hendrik Jacob Koenen (1809-1874) was letterkundige en politicus. Hij beschikte over een imposant netwerk van contacten in het protestants-christelijke Nederland van het midden van de negentiende eeuw. Daarvan getuigen de meer dan 4000 brieven die de collectie telt. Koenen correspondeerde uitvoerig met de grondlegger van de protestants-christelijke politiek Groen van Prinsterer en met figuren die het gezicht van de beweging het Réveil bepaalden zoals Isaäc da Costa en Willem de Clercq. Een aantal stukken heeft betrekking op Koenens lidmaatschap van de Amsterdamse Gemeenteraad en het Curatorium van het Athenaeum Illustre. In de collectie bevinden zich tevens de dagboeken en manuscripten van de geleerde verhandelingen van Koenen. Deze betreffen voor het merendeel de geschiedenis van Nederland.

Hendrik Jacob Koenen was a politician and a literary man. He had an impressive number of connections in the Dutch Protestant community of the mid-nineteenth century. This is testified by the more than 4,000 letters which are contained in this collection. Koenen corresponded elaborately with the founder of Protestant politics Groen van Prinsterer and with other leading characters in the Réveil, such as Isaäc da Costa and Willem de Clercq. A number of documents relate to Koenen's membership of the city council of Amsterdam and of the board of governors of the Athenaeum Illustre. Besides this, there are also two diaries and some manuscripts of academic treatises he wrote. These are largely about the history of the Netherlands.

De kunstenaar Theo Kurpershoek was een van de toonaangevende Nederlandse boekverzorgers en lettertekenaars van zijn generatie. Daarnaast was hij, op typografisch gebied, van belang als docent lettertekenen aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Deze collectie bevat met name werktekeningen voor boekomslagen, waaronder een aantal voor Querido. Ze maken onder meer duidelijk hoe vaardig Kurpershoek als lettertekenaar was; er is bijvoorbeeld weinig gebruikgemaakt van dekwit.

The artist Theo Kurpershoek was one of the leading Dutch book and typeface designers in the Netherlands in his time. Besides this, he was important in the field of typography as a teacher of type founding at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Many of his books can be found in the catalogues of De best verzorgde boeken (Best Dutch book designs). He was also a well-known (figurative) painter and graphic artist. This collection mainly contains working drawings for book jackets, for instance some for the publisher Querido. They show clearly how skilful Kurpershoek was as a typographic designer. He used very little opaque white, for instance. The collection gives a good impression of his creativity and his work as a designer for Dutch (literary) publishers.

De boekerijen van drie negentiende-eeuwse geneeskundigen: prof. dr. Leopold Lehmann (1817-1880), prof. dr. Jan van Geuns (1808-1880) en de Amsterdamse arts dr. C.E. Heynsius (1822-1886). De hoogleraren Lehmann en Van Geuns waren verbonden aan het Athenaeum Illustre en de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Lehmann werkte in de verloskunde, Van Geuns was hoogleraar in de gerechtelijke geneeskunde, waaraan hij ook zijn lessen in de pathologische anatomie en de fysische diagnostiek verbond. Cornelis Heynsius was naast arts ook maatschappelijk zeer betrokken, onder meer als oprichter van de Vereeniging ten behoeve der arbeidersklasse.

The libraries of three nineteenth-century medical doctors: Prof. Leopold Lehmann (1817-1880), Prof. Jan van Geuns (1808-1880) and the Amsterdam physician Dr C.E. Heynsius (1822-1886). Professors Lehmann and Van Geuns were affiliated with the Athenaeum Illustre and the University of Amsterdam. Lehmann worked in obstetrics, Van Geuns was professor of forensic pathology, which also involved lecturing on pathological medicine and physical diagnostics. Cornelis Heynsius was not only a physician but also an active and socially committed man. As such he founded the Vereeniging ten behoeve der Arbeidersklasse (society in support of the working classes).

De letterproevencollectie is door zijn omvang en samenstelling van internationale betekenis. Het materiaal is voor het merendeel afkomstig uit de Typografische Bibliotheek van Tetterode en de Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak. De collectie geeft een vrij volledig beeld van de drukletterproductie in Nederland van het midden van de achttiende eeuw tot heden. Daarnaast zijn er vele buitenlandse proeven uit de negentiende eeuw tot heden, waarbij met name het Duitse materiaal uit de twintigste eeuw vermelding verdient. Ook zijn er vele Nederlandse drukkerijproeven aanwezig. De letterproevencollectie is interessant voor design- en boekhistorici. Ontwerpers vinden er modellen in voor revivals of inspiratie voor nieuwe typen. Sinds de jaren negentig van de twintigste eeuw heeft de belangstelling voor letter- en grafisch ontwerpen een hoge vlucht genomen, waarvan ook het letterontwerpen profiteerde.

The collection of type founders specimens is of international significance in terms of size and scope. The materials largely derive from the Typografische Bibliotheek van Tetterode (the Tetterode collection) and the Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak (library of the book trade). The collection offers a fairly complete overview of the typeface production in the Netherlands from the middle of the eighteenth century until the present. In addition, the collection includes numerous foreign type specimens from the nineteenth century to the present, notably German materials of the twentieth century. The collection is also rich in printers’ specimens. The collection of type founders specimens is of interest to design historians and book historians. Designers will find inspiration for design revivals or new typefaces. The interest in letter design and graphic design has greatly increased since the 1990s, which also led to greater interest in the designing of letters.

Een Liedertafel is een bijeenkomst van mannelijke zangers. Liedertafel "Amstels Werkman" werd op 15 december 1887 opgericht in Amsterdam. Het archief van deze organisatie bestaat uit notulenboeken, een brievenboek en gedenkboeken naar aanleiding van jubilea van de Liedertafel.

A Liedertafel is a meeting of male singers. Liedertafel "Amstels Werkman" was founded in Amsterdam on 15 December 1887. Its archive consists of minutes books, a letter book and memorial material concerning anniversaries of the Liedertafel.

De Toonkunstcollectie ontstond geleidelijk vanaf de oprichting van de Maatschappij tot Bevordering van de Toonkunst (MBT) in 1829, als gebruiksbibliotheek voor de leden. Na de oprichting van de Vereniging voor Nederlandse Muziekgeschiedenis (VNM) in 1868 werd ook gericht gezocht naar historische, vooral Nederlandse werken. Van 1881 tot 1955 was de historische collectie in bruikleen bij de Universiteitsbibliotheek Amsterdam. Tot 2008 werd de collectie beheerd door de in 1955 opgerichte Stichting Toonkunst-Bibliotheek. De Toonkunstcollectie bevat circa 17.000 gedrukte werken, waaronder liedboeken en stemboeken, zowel van wereldlijke liederen als psalmen en stichtelijke muziek (vooral uit de zestiende eeuw), muziekwerken uit de achttiende en negentiende eeuw, en circa 10.000 handschriften, waaronder een grote collectie negentiende-eeuwse handschriftelijke bladmuziek, merendeels van Nederlandse auteurs. De collectie van het orkest van de Maatschappij Felix Meritis bevat circa 600 muziekwerken; de collectie van de Mozes en Aäronkerk te Amsterdam bevat circa 900 partituren en partijen van katholieke kerkmuziek uit de achttiende en negentiende eeuw. De Toonkunstcollectie is van belang zowel voor onderzoekers als voor musici. De muziekcollectie behoort samen met die van het Nederlands Muziek Instituut tot de grootste en belangrijkste in Nederland.

The Maatschappij tot Bevordering van de Toonkunst, a society for the promotion of music (MBT), established in 1829, founded a music library for everyday use for its members. The Vereniging voor Nederlandse Muziekgeschiedenis, an association for the Dutch history of music (VNM) founded in 1868, collected historical music, mainly of Dutch origin. From 1881 to 1955 the historical part of the combined collection was on loan to the University library of Amsterdam. From 1955 up to 2008 the collection was managed by the Stichting Toonkunst-Bibliotheek, a foundation established for that purpose. The total collection consists of about 17,000 books with liturgical music such as psalms and songs, mainly from the 16th century, and books with worldly music. Most of the collection dates from the 18th and 19th centuries. The collection also contains about 10,000 manuscripts, mainly sheet music dating from the 19th century and by Dutch authors. When the society Felix Meritis in Amsterdam was discontinued in 1888, the collection of works of orchestral music, altogether about 600 items, was granted to the MBT. Finally, the collection from the church of Mozes- and Aäron in Amsterdam, was included in the collection of the MBT. It consists of about 900 scores and (orchestral) works of Catholic liturgical music of the 18th and 19th centuries. Together with the music collection of the Netherlands Music Institute, the so-called Toonkunst library is the largest and most important collection in the Netherlands.

De in 1949 opgerichte Sociëteit Joodse Jongeren Mageen Dawied (Schild van David: Davidsster) had als doel het joodse bewustzijn en het saamhorigheidsgevoel onder joodse jongeren te bevorderen. Dit doel werd bereikt door het organiseren van allerlei activiteiten binnen en buiten het sociëteitsgebouw aan de Lekstraat in Amsterdam.

Established in 1949, the Magen David Society for Young Jews (Magen David means the Shield, or Star, of David) sought to promote Jewish awareness and solidarity among young Jewish people. It did so by organising a wide range of activities in its premises on the Lekstraat in Amsterdam and elsewhere.

Het Korps Mavors Medicator, een vereniging voor militaire studenten, werd in 1860 in Utrecht opgericht. De Sociëteit Machäon, uit 1847, werd er datzelfde jaar nog in opgenomen. De concentratie van medische opleidingen leidde in 1865 tot overplaatsing van opleiding en vereniging naar Amsterdam. In 1881 werd de militair-geneeskundige opleiding opgeheven, en daarmee verdwenen ook Mavors Medicator en Sociëteit Machäon. De collectie bestaat uit archiefmateriaal, zoals notulen, correspondentie, financiële verslagen en ledenlijsten, van zowel Mavors Medicator als Sociëteit Machäon. Daarnaast zijn er foto's, bestuurslinten, een voorzittershamer en divers drukwerk. Het opvallend complete archief is cultuurhistorisch van belang vanwege de voor die tijd ongebruikelijke aandacht die de studenten toonden voor sociale vraagstukken.

The student union Mavors Medicator, a student union for students of military medicine, was founded in Utrecht in 1860. In that same year the Sociëteit Machäon, founded in 1847, was incorporated in Mavors Medicator. In 1865 the clustering of medical disciplines led to the transfer of both the discipline and the student union to Amsterdam. In 1881 military medicine was discontinued entirely, and therefore Mavors Medicator and Sociëteit Machäon disappeared as well. The collection consists of archival material, such as minutes, correspondence, financial reports and membership lists of both Mavors Medicator and Sociëteit Machäon. Besides this, there are photographs, board ribbons, a gavel and a variety of printed material. The surprisingly complete archive is important in a cultural historical sense because of the for the period unusual attention the students had for social issues.

Het archief van uitgeverij J.M. Meulenhoff, opgericht in 1895 en nog steeds actief, bestaat uit bedrijfsadministratie, documentatie, contracten, productiedossiers en foto- en illustratiemateriaal. Het archief geeft een goed beeld van de keten van boekproductie en boekpromotie bij een grote Nederlandse uitgeverij.

Founded in 1895, the archive of J.M. Meulenhoff, a publishing house still active today, consists of the company’s accounting, documentation, contracts, production files and photographs and illustrations. The archive offers a good impression of all stages of book production and promotion in a large Dutch publishing company.

Het Nederlands Jazz Archief (NJA) is opgericht in 1980 met het doel de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse jazz vanaf circa 1900 vast te leggen en toegankelijk te maken. De jazzcollectie bevat een grote verzameling unieke audio op verschillende formaten: geluidsbanden, cassettes, snijplaten, lp's, cd's etc. Daarnaast zijn er collecties tijdschriften, boeken, documentatie, foto's, video's en bladmuziek. De collectie bevat een aantal unieke deelcollecties zoals het geluidsarchief van het Bimhuis te Amsterdam, de collectie van Michiel de Ruyter, de cassetteopnamen van Jacques Waisvisz en de documentatie van Paul Acket, organisator van concerten.

The Dutch Jazz Archive (NJA) was founded in 1980. The main purpose was to capture the history of Dutch Jazz from around 1900 and to collect jazz material and make this available. The collection consists of unique recordings on different formats among them: reel-to-reel tapes, cassettes, lp's, ep's, 78 rpm. Books, periodicals, documentation, photos, videos and sheet music are part of the collection. The collection contains unique material e.g. the sound archive of jazz theater the Bimhuis In Amsterdam, the collection of jazz promoter Michiel de Ruyter, the field recordings on cassette by Jacques Waisvisz and the archive of concert producer Paul Acket.

De collectie van de Nederlandsche Wetenschappelijke Boekhandel te Amsterdam bestaat uit prospectussen uit de bezettingstijd.

The collection of the Nederlandsche Wetenschappelijke Boekhandel te Amsterdam consists of prospectuses of the period of the German occupation.

Het doel van de in 1909 opgerichte Amsterdamse afdeling van de Nederlandse Zionistische Studenten Organisatie was het propageren van het zionisme onder joodse studenten. De afdeling organiseerde in dit kader propaganda- en cursusvergaderingen met sprekers. De correspondentie in het archief geeft een goed beeld van de werkzaamheden van de afdeling en de contacten met de andere stedelijke afdelingen en de landelijke organisatie van de NZSO.

The objective of the Amsterdam chapter of the Dutch Zionist Student Organisation (NZSO), which was established in 1909, was to propagate Zionism among Jewish students. To this end, the chapter organised propaganda meetings and courses with speakers. The correspondence in the archive provides a clear picture of the activities of the chapter and its contacts with chapters in other cities, as well as with the national NZSO organisation.

De Amsterdamse Studenten Roeivereniging Nereus werd in 1885 opgericht als subvereniging van het Amsterdamsch Studenten Corps (A.S.C.). Nereusleden nemen regelmatig en met veel succes deel aan internationale wedstrijden, waaronder de Olympische Spelen. In 1969 trad Nereus uit het Corps. In 1971 fuseerde de vereniging met Thetis, de in 1933 opgerichte Amsterdamsche Vrouwelijke Studenten Roeivereeniging. De collectie bestaat grotendeels uit foto's, medailles en gedenkpenningen.

Nereus, the rowing club for students in Amsterdam, was founded in 1885 as a subdivision of the ASC, the Amsterdam Student Union. Members of Nereus often and with success take part in international contests, among which the Olympic Games. In 1969 Nereus left the student union and a few years later, in 1973, it merged with Thetis, the rowing club for female students in Amsterdam. The collection consists mainly of photographs, medallions and commemorative medals.

Nescio werd als Jan Hendrik Frederik Grönloh geboren in 1882 en overleed in 1961. Hij was werkzaam als procuratiehouder bij een handelsfirma, maar zijn grote liefde lag bij de literatuur. In 1911 debuteerde hij in De Gids met zijn beroemde verhaal over de zwerver Japi, De Uitvreter. Ook de verhalen Dichtertje, Titaantjes en Mene Tekel zijn zeer geliefd geworden. In zijn sterfjaar verscheen nog een bundel korte verhalen onder de titel Boven het dal. In 1996 kwam daar nog het Natuurdagboek bij. De collectie bevat onder meer uitgaven van het werk van Nescio, secundaire literatuur, beeldmateriaal en enkele manuscripten.

Nescio was born as Jan Hendrik Frederik Grönloh in 1882 and died in 1961. He worked as a managing clerk for the Holland-Bombay Trading Company, but literature was his enduring passion. He debuted in the literary magazine De Gids in 1911 with his famous story of the vagabond Japi, De Uitvreter (The Sponger). The stories Dichtertje (Little Poet), Titaantjes (Young Titans) and Mene Tekel also gained great popularity. A volume of short stories entitled Boven het dal (Above the Valley) appeared in the year he died. Finally in 1996 his Natuurdagboek (Nature Diary) was published. The collection includes editions of Nescio’s works, secondary literature, visual material and a few manuscripts.

De ruim 50.000 foto’s in deze collectie zijn afkomstig uit het bezit van het in 1865 opgerichte Nieuw Israëlietisch Weekblad (NIW). Ze geven een goed beeld van de belangstelling voor het Nederlandse en internationaal georiënteerde Joodse leven. Bijna de helft van de opnamen is gemaakt in Nederland; ongeveer een derde in het huidige Israël. De collectie is opgebouwd vanaf 1921, toen de eerste foto in het NIW gepubliceerd werd, en beslaat analoge foto’s en negatieven uit de periode 1850-2007, zij het met de nadruk op naoorlogse foto’s. Van het vooroorlogse Joodse leven bewijzen een kleine duizend foto’s. Bijna driekwart van het materiaal is nooit gepubliceerd in het NIW, en van een derde is de naam van de fotograaf bekend. In het Kenniscentrum van het Joods Museum (Amsterdam) is de collectie digitaal te raadplegen.

This collection containing over 50,000 photos is derived from Nieuw Israëlietisch Weekblad (NIW), a periodical founded in 1865. The photos offer a good impression of the interest in Jewish life in the Netherlands and elsewhere. Almost half of the photos were taken in the Netherlands; about one third in present-day Israel. The collection was started in 1921, when NIW featured its first photograph, and contains analogue photographs and negatives from the period 1850-2007, though with an emphasis on post-war photographs. Jewish life before WWII is documented in around a thousand photographs. Almost three quarters of the material was never published in NIW; of one third of the material the photographer’s name is known. The collection can be viewed online at the Resource centre of the Jewish Cultural Quarter (Amsterdam).

Het archief van de grafisch ontwerper Bas Oudt (1956-2014) werd in 2009 door hemzelf geschonken aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Na zijn overlijden in 2014 volgde een aanvulling. Het archief bevat drie meter aan materiaal: grafische eindproducten als boeken, brochures, catalogi, huisstijlen, affiches naast enkele schetsen en werktekeningen. Ook is er materiaal uit de tijd dat Oudt verbonden was als student en docent aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam.

The archive of graphic designer Bas Oudt (1956-2014) was donated to the University of Amsterdam by Oudt himself in 2009. More material was added following his death in 2014. The archive stretches to three metres of material, including graphic end products such as books, brochures, catalogues, house styles, posters, as well as a number of sketches and work drawings. There is also material from the time Oudt had been associated with the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam as a student and a lecturer.

De nalatenschap van de Amsterdamse koopman en verzamelaar Gerardus van Papenbroeck bevat een belangrijk deel van zijn handschriftencollectie (bestaande uit ongeveer zevenhonderd manuscripten en brieven van Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft), het grootste deel van zijn portrettencollectie (49 portretten van geleerde en beroemde mannen) en een schilderij van de ruïnes van Palmyra. De collectie is onderdeel van een van de weinige humanistische verzamelingen die in hun geheel in Nederland behouden zijn gebleven.

This collection consists of nearly 700 manuscripts and letters by the 17th century Dutch writer and historian Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft, originating from the legacy of the Amsterdam trader and collector Gerardus van Papenbroeck (1673-1743). The collection also contains 49 of Van Papenbroeck's portraits of scholars and famous men and a large painting of the ruins of Palmyra, which shows his interest in antiquity. The collection of Van Papenbroeck is one of the few humanistic collections in the Netherlands which are still complete.

De Pekidim en Amarkalim ('officiers en schatbewaarders') vormden een internationale organisatie die tot doel had de fondsenwerving ter ondersteuning van armlastige joden in Palestina te coördineren. De organisatie onderhield nauwe contacten met de leiders van de joodse gemeenschappen in de steden Jeruzalem, Hebron, Safed en Tiberias. Het archief, dat de ingekomen brieven bevat, is een zeer belangrijke bron voor de vroegste geschiedenis van de joodse vestiging in Palestina in de moderne tijd.

The Pekidim and Amarkalim ('Supervisors and Administrators') was an international organisation whose aim was to coordinate fundraising efforts to support poor Jews in Palestine. The organisation maintained close contacts with the leaders of the Jewish communities in the cities of Jerusalem, Hebron, Safed and Tiberias. The archive, which contains the incoming letters, is a very important information source about the earliest history of Jewish settlements in modern-day Palestine.

De collectie bestaat uit penningen met afbeeldingen van hoogleraren, verbonden aan het Athenaeum Illustre (1632), aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam (1877) of aan een andere instelling van hoger onderwijs in Amsterdam, uit gelegenheidspenningen van diverse universiteiten en uit prijspenningen voor hoogleraren en toegangspenningen voor de Hortus Medicus.

The collection consists of medals of professors of the University of Amsterdam (1877), of its predecessor the Athenaeum Illustre (1632) and of professors of other educational institutes in Amsterdam. Besides this, there are anniversary and other commemorative medals of various universities, awards for professors in the form of medals and entrance tokens to the Hortus Botanicus.

De (internationale) Philhelleensche Vereeniging werd in 1888 te Amsterdam opgericht met het doel de studie en verbreiding van de Griekse taal en literatuur. Daartoe werd een bibliotheek ingericht. De collectie bestaat uit algemene, historische, taalkundige en literaire werken in het Nieuwgrieks en uit taalkundige werken in andere talen over het klassieke en het moderne Grieks en uit geschiedkundige publicaties over Griekenland en de Griekse literatuur.

The (international) 'Philhelleensche Vereeniging' was established in 1888 in Amsterdam with the aim to study and propagate Greek language and literature. For that reason a library was set up. The collection consists of general, historical, linguistic and literary publications in modern Greek and linguistic works in other languages about classical and modern Greek. Besides this, there are historical publications about Greece and Greek literature.

N.G. Pierson was een van Nederlands belangrijkste economen. Hij was hoogleraar in de staathuishoudkunde aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam (1877-1885), president van De Nederlandsche Bank (1884-1891) en minister van Financiën (1891-1894, 1897-1901). De collectie bestaat uit een bibliotheek, dictaten van zijn colleges en enkele andere aan zijn functie van hoogleraar gerelateerde documenten en objecten.

N.G. Pierson was one of the most important economists of the Netherlands. He was the professor of economics at the Universiteit van Amsterdam (1877-1885), president of the national bank, the Nederlandsche Bank, (1884-1891) and minister of finance (1891-1894, 1897-1901). The collection consists of his library, lecture notes and several objects and documents related to his function as a professor.
