De Artis Bibliotheek heeft haar ontstaan te danken aan de oprichting van het Zoölogisch Genootschap Natura Artis Magistra te Amsterdam in 1838, ter bevordering van de kennis van de natuurlijke historie. Daartoe behoorde het inrichten van een wetenschappelijke boeken- en tijdschriftencollectie. In 1939 ging de bibliotheek over naar de gemeente Amsterdam, die haar toevertrouwde aan de universiteit. De Artis Bibliotheek bevat materiaal vanaf de vijftiende eeuw tot heden, waaronder boeken en tijdschriften op het gebied van biologie en zoölogie met als zwaartepunten een grote Linnaeus- en Darwin-collectie, reis- en landbeschrijvingen, alle literatuur over Artis en veel over moderne natuurstudie. De bibliotheek bevat verder een enorme collectie prenten met afbeeldingen van dieren (de Iconographia Zoologica), archieven van tal van bekende biologen uit de negentiende en twintigste eeuw en museale objecten. Ten slotte zijn er vele bijzondere exemplaren – vaak op zeer groot formaat en niet zelden met de hand ingekleurd – van natuurhistorische werken waarvan geen tweede exemplaar in Nederland bekend is.

The Artis Library owes its existence to the foundation of the zoological society Natura Artis Magistra in Amsterdam in 1838. This society was founded in order to increase the knowledge of natural history. Therefore, the society founded an academic library containing books and periodicals. In 1939 this library came into hands of the municipality of Amsterdam, which in its turn entrusted it to the university. The Artis Bibliotheek contains material from the fifteenth century up to the present, including books and periodicals on biology and zoology. Highlights in the collection are a large amount of material written by Linnaeus and by Darwin, travel accounts and regional geology, all the literature on Artis itself and much about the present-day study of nature. Besides this, the library contains a large collection of prints with pictures of animals (the 'Iconographia Zoologica'), archives of many well-known biologists from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and museum objects. Finally, there are many works of natural history – often quite large and coloured by hand – of which second specimens are not known to exist in The Netherlands.

De collectie bestaat uit boeken, fotoalbums en parafernalia. Zij zijn verzameld door Gerardus Frederik Westerman (1807-1890), boekhandelaar/uitgever en directeur en mede-oprichter van het Zoölogisch Genootschap 'Natura Artis Magistra'. De bibliotheek bestaat uit twee delen: het eerste deel (de collectie Westerman 1856) werd in 1857 door Westerman verkocht aan het Genootschap 'Natura Artis Magistra'. Het tweede deel (de collectie Westerman 1890) werd door de erfgenamen na Westermans dood in 1890 aan het Genootschap gelegateerd. De totale bibliotheek omvat boeken op het gebied van de zoölogie van 1631 tot 1888. Hierbij zijn werken van beroemde biologen zoals Petrus Camper en Willem Vrolik.

This collection of books, photographs and paraphernalia was compiled by Gerardus Frederik Westerman (1807-1890). The bookseller and editor Westerman was joint founder and director of the Zoölogisch Genootschap 'Natura Artis Magistra'. This society, the predecessor of the present Artis Zoo in Amsterdam, aimed to stimulate the knowledge of natural history. Therefore not only a zoo and a museum with inanimate specimens was created, but also a library. The library consists of two parts generally referred to as the collection Westerman 1856 and the collection Westerman 1890. The first part was sold by Westerman in 1857 to the society 'Natura Artis Magistra'. The collection Westerman 1890 was bequeathed to the society after his death. Together they contain books in the field of zoology ranging from 1631 to 1888, including works by famous biologists such as Petrus Camper en Willem Vrolik.
