Grafische technieken

In de negentiende en twintigste eeuw heeft de firma Tetterode een omvangrijke collectie documentatie verzameld over machines, apparatuur en hulpmiddelen in gebruik bij de grafische industrie. De documentatie bestaat uit catalogi, handleidingen, reclamemateriaal, prijslijsten en informatiebrochures.

The Tetterode firm brought together a comprehensive documentary collection on machinery, devices and resources that were used in the graphic industry in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The documentation comprises catalogues, manuals, advertising materials, price lists and information leaflets.

Het Instituut voor Grafische Techniek TNO, een onderzoeksinstelling voor de grafische industrie, verzamelde vanaf 1939 actief literatuur en documentatie over grafische machines, hulpmiddelen en werkwijzen. De omvangrijke collectie handleidingen, reclamedrukwerk en informatiebladen is geordend aan de hand van de UDC.

The Instituut voor Grafische Techniek (Institute of Graphic Technology) TNO, a research institute for the graphic industry, actively collected literature and documentation on graphic machinery, resources and techniques from 1939. The comprehensive collection of manuals, advertising materials and information sheets has been arranged in accordance with UDC guidelines.

De firma Tetterode, formeel bekend als Lettergieterij 'Amsterdam' voorheen N. Tetterode, was een belangrijke internationale lettergieterij en handelaar in grafische machines. Het bedrijfsarchief geeft inzicht in de activiteiten van het bedrijf bij de ontwikkeling en verkoop van lettertypes en grafische apparatuur. Als onderdeel van de Collectie Tetterode maakt het zichtbaar hoe de verschillende collecties en archieven die afkomstig zijn van Tetterode, en deel uitmaken van de collecties van de Universiteit van Amsterdam, aan elkaar gerelateerd zijn.

The Tetterode company, officially known as Lettergieterij 'Amsterdam' voorheen N. Tetterode, was a prominent international type foundry and trader in graphic machines. The company archive sheds light on its activities in developing and selling typefaces and graphic equipment. As part of the Tetterode collection, it highlights the interrelations between the various collections and archives that originate from the Tetterode company and are now part of the University of Amsterdam’s collections.

Onder de naam collectie Tetterode beheert de Universiteitsbibliotheek sinds 1971 een aankoop van Lettergieterij en Machinehandel voorheen N. Tetterode-Nederland nv. Het is internationaal een van de grote collecties op het gebied van de geschiedenis van de grafische techniek en vormgeving. De negentiende en de twintigste eeuw zijn in het bijzonder sterk vertegenwoordigd. De collectie bestaat uit een bibliotheek (met een vaktechnisch en een museumgedeelte) en archiefmateriaal (waaronder collectie S.H. de Roos en archief Letterproductie). Behalve boeken en tijdschriften zijn er materiaalsoorten als handschriften, prenten, prospectussen, affiches en kalenders.

Since 1971 the University Library manages the Tetterode collection, which was bought from 'Lettergieterij en Machinehandel', a type foundry and machine business formerly called 'N. Tetterode-Nederland NV'. Internationally, it is one of the largest collections dealing with the history of graphic technique and design. The largest part of the collection is from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The collection consists of a library - which is partly technical and partly museological - and of archival material. The latter includes the collections S.H. de Roos and the type designer's archive. Besides books and magazines, there are manuscripts, pictures, brochures, posters and calendars.
