De bibliotheek van het Begijnhof Amsterdam bevat handschriften en drukken van de 15e tot de 20e eeuw. De collectie is door de eeuwen heen in hoofdzaak opgebouwd uit de bibliotheken van pastoors van het Begijnhof onder wie D. van der Mye, S. Coetenburgh, N.J.A. Steins Bisschop en B.H. Klönne. De collectie is van belang voor onderzoek naar onderwerpen als het Mirakel van Amsterdam, de geschiedenis van het Begijnhof en Amsterdamse kerkmuziek. Ook de geschiedenis van de Amsterdamse katholieken, het Jansenisme en de April-beweging zijn goed vertegenwoordigd. In de collectie bevinden zich diverse unieke en zeldzame stukken.

The library of the Begijnhof (Beguinage) in Amsterdam contains manuscripts and books of the 15th to 20th centuries. The collection was formed mainly by the priests of the Begijnhof, such as D. van der Mye, S. Coetenburgh, N.J.A. Steins Bisschop and B.H. Klönne. The collection is important for research into various topics, such as the Miracle of Amsterdam, the history of the Beguinage and church music in Amsterdam. Other well represented topics are the history of Roman Catholics in Amsterdam, Jansenism and the violent protestant response to the restoration of the episcopal hierarchy in April of 1853. The collection contains a number of unique and rare documents.

De Toonkunstcollectie ontstond geleidelijk vanaf de oprichting van de Maatschappij tot Bevordering van de Toonkunst (MBT) in 1829, als gebruiksbibliotheek voor de leden. Na de oprichting van de Vereniging voor Nederlandse Muziekgeschiedenis (VNM) in 1868 werd ook gericht gezocht naar historische, vooral Nederlandse werken. Van 1881 tot 1955 was de historische collectie in bruikleen bij de Universiteitsbibliotheek Amsterdam. Tot 2008 werd de collectie beheerd door de in 1955 opgerichte Stichting Toonkunst-Bibliotheek. De Toonkunstcollectie bevat circa 17.000 gedrukte werken, waaronder liedboeken en stemboeken, zowel van wereldlijke liederen als psalmen en stichtelijke muziek (vooral uit de zestiende eeuw), muziekwerken uit de achttiende en negentiende eeuw, en circa 10.000 handschriften, waaronder een grote collectie negentiende-eeuwse handschriftelijke bladmuziek, merendeels van Nederlandse auteurs. De collectie van het orkest van de Maatschappij Felix Meritis bevat circa 600 muziekwerken; de collectie van de Mozes en Aäronkerk te Amsterdam bevat circa 900 partituren en partijen van katholieke kerkmuziek uit de achttiende en negentiende eeuw. De Toonkunstcollectie is van belang zowel voor onderzoekers als voor musici. De muziekcollectie behoort samen met die van het Nederlands Muziek Instituut tot de grootste en belangrijkste in Nederland.

The Maatschappij tot Bevordering van de Toonkunst, a society for the promotion of music (MBT), established in 1829, founded a music library for everyday use for its members. The Vereniging voor Nederlandse Muziekgeschiedenis, an association for the Dutch history of music (VNM) founded in 1868, collected historical music, mainly of Dutch origin. From 1881 to 1955 the historical part of the combined collection was on loan to the University library of Amsterdam. From 1955 up to 2008 the collection was managed by the Stichting Toonkunst-Bibliotheek, a foundation established for that purpose. The total collection consists of about 17,000 books with liturgical music such as psalms and songs, mainly from the 16th century, and books with worldly music. Most of the collection dates from the 18th and 19th centuries. The collection also contains about 10,000 manuscripts, mainly sheet music dating from the 19th century and by Dutch authors. When the society Felix Meritis in Amsterdam was discontinued in 1888, the collection of works of orchestral music, altogether about 600 items, was granted to the MBT. Finally, the collection from the church of Mozes- and Aäron in Amsterdam, was included in the collection of the MBT. It consists of about 900 scores and (orchestral) works of Catholic liturgical music of the 18th and 19th centuries. Together with the music collection of the Netherlands Music Institute, the so-called Toonkunst library is the largest and most important collection in the Netherlands.
