De collectie De Buitenkant omvat feitelijk drie Amsterdamse archieven, namelijk die van Zetterij Chang Chi Lan-Ying, Offsetdrukkerij Jan de Jong en Uitgeverij De Buitenkant. Deze kleine bedrijven zijn echter persoonlijk en zakelijk zo nauw met elkaar verweven dat ze als één geheel worden beschreven. Het gaat bij deze collectie zowel om archiefmateriaal (correspondentie en administratie bijvoorbeeld) als om grafische eindproducten. Uitgeverij De Buitenkant ontstond in 1980 uit de door Chang Chi Lan-Ying en Jan de Jong gedreven zetterij en drukkerij. Door zich te richten op boeken over boeken en door het hoge niveau van productie en vormgeving wist de uitgeverij de aandacht op zich te vestigen. Deze collectie maakt onderzoek mogelijk naar de beoefening van de boekgeschiedenis in Nederland alsook naar de ontwikkelingen in de grafische industrie (van foto- naar digitale zettechniek).

The collection 'De Buitenkant' ('The Outside') in fact consists of three separate archives: the archives of Zetterij Chang Chi Lan-Ying (typesetter), of Offsetdrukkerij Jan de Jong (offset printing business) and, finally, of Uitgeverij De Buitenkant (publisher 'The Outside'). These three small companies are so interwoven both personally and in business that they are described as one. The collection includes archival material such as correspondence and administrative documents and graphic finished articles. Publisher 'De Buitenkant' developed in 1980 from the typesetting and the printing business ran by Chang Chi Lan-Ying and Jan de Jong respectively. By focusing on books about books and by the high level of the output and the design the company managed to draw attention to itself. The collection offers opportunities for research in the practice of book history in the Netherlands as well as in the developments in the graphics industry (from photo-typesetting to digital composition).

Samuel Louis (Sem) Hartz verwierf internationale bekendheid als grafisch ontwerper en kopergraveur. Hij maakte naam met zijn postzegels, waaronder koninginnezegels, zijn bankbiljetten en drukletters. Zijn gehele loopbaan werkte hij voor de beroemde grafische onderneming Joh. Enschedé en Zonen in Haarlem. De collectie bestaat met name uit correspondentie (vooral over de productie van zijn drukletter Linotype Juliana, 1958) en uit drukwerk (boekjes en efemera) van zijn private press, de Tuinwijkpers.

Samuel Lois (Sem) Hartz achieved international fame as a graphic designer and copperplate engraver. He became famous for his stamps, in particular stamps with the queen of the Netherlands, his banknotes and his typefaces. During his entire career he worked at the famous printing firm Joh. Enschedé en Zonen in Haarlem, which dates back to the 18th century. The collection consists mainly of correspondence, in particular about the production of his typeface Linotype Juliana of 1958, and of printed matter, such as books and ephemera from his private printing press, the Tuinwijkpers.
