De Leidse leesbibliotheek Van der Hoek werd gesticht door de gebroeders Murray, in 1822 overgenomen door C.C. van der Hoek (1793-1876) en voortgezet door zijn zoons. Het was een bloeiend bedrijf met duizenden populaire romans. De collectie bevat naast Nederlandstalige werken ook Franse, Duitse en Engelse titels.

The lending library Van der Hoek in Leiden was established by the Murray brothers and taken over in 1822 by C.C. van der Hoek (1793-1876). Later, his sons continued the library, which was a flourishing company with thousands of popular novels. Apart from Dutch publications, the collection also includes publications in French, German and English.

De boekerijen van drie negentiende-eeuwse geneeskundigen: prof. dr. Leopold Lehmann (1817-1880), prof. dr. Jan van Geuns (1808-1880) en de Amsterdamse arts dr. C.E. Heynsius (1822-1886). De hoogleraren Lehmann en Van Geuns waren verbonden aan het Athenaeum Illustre en de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Lehmann werkte in de verloskunde, Van Geuns was hoogleraar in de gerechtelijke geneeskunde, waaraan hij ook zijn lessen in de pathologische anatomie en de fysische diagnostiek verbond. Cornelis Heynsius was naast arts ook maatschappelijk zeer betrokken, onder meer als oprichter van de Vereeniging ten behoeve der arbeidersklasse.

The libraries of three nineteenth-century medical doctors: Prof. Leopold Lehmann (1817-1880), Prof. Jan van Geuns (1808-1880) and the Amsterdam physician Dr C.E. Heynsius (1822-1886). Professors Lehmann and Van Geuns were affiliated with the Athenaeum Illustre and the University of Amsterdam. Lehmann worked in obstetrics, Van Geuns was professor of forensic pathology, which also involved lecturing on pathological medicine and physical diagnostics. Cornelis Heynsius was not only a physician but also an active and socially committed man. As such he founded the Vereeniging ten behoeve der Arbeidersklasse (society in support of the working classes).

De collectie Linnaeana van de Rotterdamse entomoloog F.C.J. Fischer bestaat uit literatuur van en over Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778): 85 publicaties zijn van Linnaeus' hand en 269 publicaties behandelen zijn werk of zijn geschreven door leerlingen van hem. Deze laatste categorie betreft dissertaties die waarschijnlijk deels door Linnaeus geschreven of geredigeerd werden. De toevoeging van de collectie Fischer in 1967 aan de collectie Linnaeana van de Artis Bibliotheek maakt dat deze instelling nu – internationaal – een van de meest omvangrijke collecties Linnaeana beheert.

The collection of Linnaeana belonging to the Rotterdam entomologist F.C.J. Fischer (approx. 1930-1970) consists of literature by and about Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778). Eighty-five publications are by Linnaeus himself and 269 publications deal with his work or were written by his students. The latter category consists of dissertations which were probably partly written or edited by Linnaeus. The Fischer collection was added to the collection of Linnaeana in the Artis Bibliotheek (Artis library) in 1967. As a result the Artis Bibliotheek has become the library managing one of the largest collections of Linnaeana in the world.

J.G. de Man (1850-1930) was een Nederlandse bioloog die zijn leven wijdde aan de taxonomie van crustaceeën en nematoden. Hij beschreef honderden nieuwe geslachten en soorten in 181 artikelen en monografieën, veelal voorzien van door hem zelf vervaardigde (zeer nauwkeurige) tekeningen. Zijn werk is nog steeds van waarde. De collectie bestaat uit boeken, overdrukken en losse publicaties van bescheiden omvang (redes, dissertaties, brochures) die De Man in de loop van zijn leven heeft verworven, hetzij door aankoop, hetzij door schenking. Hij gebruikte deze bij zijn taxonomische werk. De publicaties gaan voornamelijk over crustaceeën en nematoden. Een klein deel betreft andere groepen uit het dierenrijk en algemeen-biologische onderwerpen. Ook zijn er publicaties over filosofie en politiek. Zij laat daarmee zien wat de bronnen waren die De Man gebruikte voor zijn werk met de twee groepen waarin hij zich specialiseerde en voor welke onderwerpen hij verder belangstelling had.

Het Korps Mavors Medicator, een vereniging voor militaire studenten, werd in 1860 in Utrecht opgericht. De Sociëteit Machäon, uit 1847, werd er datzelfde jaar nog in opgenomen. De concentratie van medische opleidingen leidde in 1865 tot overplaatsing van opleiding en vereniging naar Amsterdam. In 1881 werd de militair-geneeskundige opleiding opgeheven, en daarmee verdwenen ook Mavors Medicator en Sociëteit Machäon. De collectie bestaat uit archiefmateriaal, zoals notulen, correspondentie, financiële verslagen en ledenlijsten, van zowel Mavors Medicator als Sociëteit Machäon. Daarnaast zijn er foto's, bestuurslinten, een voorzittershamer en divers drukwerk. Het opvallend complete archief is cultuurhistorisch van belang vanwege de voor die tijd ongebruikelijke aandacht die de studenten toonden voor sociale vraagstukken.

The student union Mavors Medicator, a student union for students of military medicine, was founded in Utrecht in 1860. In that same year the Sociëteit Machäon, founded in 1847, was incorporated in Mavors Medicator. In 1865 the clustering of medical disciplines led to the transfer of both the discipline and the student union to Amsterdam. In 1881 military medicine was discontinued entirely, and therefore Mavors Medicator and Sociëteit Machäon disappeared as well. The collection consists of archival material, such as minutes, correspondence, financial reports and membership lists of both Mavors Medicator and Sociëteit Machäon. Besides this, there are photographs, board ribbons, a gavel and a variety of printed material. The surprisingly complete archive is important in a cultural historical sense because of the for the period unusual attention the students had for social issues.

Philip Meerloo vestigde zich in 1936 als eerste als professioneel handlezer in Amsterdam. Van honderden cliënten bewaarde hij een of meerdere handafdrukken. Dit deed hij ten behoeve van enerzijds zijn eigen studie en anderzijds voor het boek dat hij hoopte te publiceren. Dat boek is uiteindelijk nooit gerealiseerd. De meeste handafdrukken zijn voorzien van de datum van het consult, de geboortedatum van de cliënt en diens naam. Een deel is gesigneerd, met name door cliënten die indertijd een zekere status of bekendheid genoten.

De collectie bevat de drukken van werken van Luther uit de bibliotheek van Isaac Meulman (1807-1869), lutheraan en commissionair in suiker te Amsterdam.

Het Nederlandsch Genootschap tot Zedelijke Verbetering der Gevangenen werd in 1823 mede door W.H. Suringar opgericht. Deze liet zijn collectie na aan het genootschap. De publicaties gaan onder meer over strafrecht en straftoepassing. Daarnaast zijn er religieuze werken en schoolboeken.

One of the founders of the Nederlandsch Genootschap tot Zedelijke Verbetering der Gevangenen, a society set up in 1823 to help rehabilitate prisoners, was Willem Hendrik Suringar, who bequeathed his collection to the society. Some of the topics dealt with are criminal law and the administration of criminal justice. The collection also contains religious works and school books.

Het Nederlandsch Schoolmuseum startte in 1877 met als doel nieuwe leer- en hulpmiddelen voor het onderwijs te verzamelen en beschikbaar te stellen. De collectie telt 98.000 banden uit de periode 1600-2000, waarvan 12.000 uit de negentiende eeuw. Zo'n veertig procent van het geheel bestaat uit schoolboeken voor lager en middelbaar onderwijs, vooral Nederlandse drukken. Alle schoolvakken zijn vertegenwoordigd, meestal met opeenvolgende drukken. Ook zijn er boeken te vinden over pedagogiek, psychologie en didactiek. Verder zijn er kinderboeken, (wand)platen en tijdschriften. Het schoolboek is een stille getuige van kennis, beelden, begrippen, ideeën, waarden en normen die in een bepaalde periode een rol spelen. Deze collectie bestrijkt een lange, aaneengesloten periode en dekt alle schoolvakken. Daarom is ze van grote cultuurhistorische waarde en onmisbaar voor onderzoek naar de geschiedenis van onderwijs en opvoeding.

The 'Nederlandsch Schoolmuseum' (Dutch Schoolmuseum) opened in 1877 with the aim to collect new educational tools. The collection now consists of 98,000 books dating from 1600-2000, 12,000 of which were published in the 19th century and 175 in the 17th and 18th centuries. About 40% of the collection consists of Dutch textbooks for primary and secondary education. All school subjects are covered, often with consecutive editions. Besides this, there are books on pedagogy, psychology and didactics. There are also about 7000 children's books, wall charts and many periodicals. Textbooks are the silent witnesses of knowledge, images, concepts, opinions and standards that were predominant in the past. This collection covers a long and continuous period and all school subjects. As such, the collection is of major importance to understand history and culture in the Netherlands and indispensable for research into the history of education and teaching.

Nescio werd als Jan Hendrik Frederik Grönloh geboren in 1882 en overleed in 1961. Hij was werkzaam als procuratiehouder bij een handelsfirma, maar zijn grote liefde lag bij de literatuur. In 1911 debuteerde hij in De Gids met zijn beroemde verhaal over de zwerver Japi, De Uitvreter. Ook de verhalen Dichtertje, Titaantjes en Mene Tekel zijn zeer geliefd geworden. In zijn sterfjaar verscheen nog een bundel korte verhalen onder de titel Boven het dal. In 1996 kwam daar nog het Natuurdagboek bij. De collectie bevat onder meer uitgaven van het werk van Nescio, secundaire literatuur, beeldmateriaal en enkele manuscripten.

Nescio was born as Jan Hendrik Frederik Grönloh in 1882 and died in 1961. He worked as a managing clerk for the Holland-Bombay Trading Company, but literature was his enduring passion. He debuted in the literary magazine De Gids in 1911 with his famous story of the vagabond Japi, De Uitvreter (The Sponger). The stories Dichtertje (Little Poet), Titaantjes (Young Titans) and Mene Tekel also gained great popularity. A volume of short stories entitled Boven het dal (Above the Valley) appeared in the year he died. Finally in 1996 his Natuurdagboek (Nature Diary) was published. The collection includes editions of Nescio’s works, secondary literature, visual material and a few manuscripts.

Het Nutsseminarium voor Pedagogiek werd in 1919 opgericht door de Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen om wetenschappelijk onderzoek te doen naar het lager en middelbaar onderwijs in Nederland. Een andere doelstelling was leraren op te leiden voor het middelbaar onderwijs. De bibliotheek van het Nutsseminarium werd gevormd tussen 1919 en 1926. In 1926 werd de collectie – zo'n 3000 boeken en een beperkt aantal tijdschriften – overgebracht naar de Universiteitsbibliotheek. Er is literatuur te vinden over opvoedkunde, schoolwezen en de geschiedenis ervan, schoolorganisatie en vooral didactiek en psychologie. De boeken zijn merendeels van na 1910 en zijn voornamelijk gericht op het lager onderwijs. Ook vreemdtalige publicaties zijn goed vertegenwoordigd.

The 'Nutsseminarium voor Pedagogiek', an institution for academic research into primary and secondary education in the Netherlands, was founded in 1919. The institution also aimed to train teachers for secondary education. The library of the institution was formed between 1919 and 1926 and consists of approximately 3000 books and several journals. In 1926 the collection was moved to the University Library. The library covers pedagogy and the educational system and its history and organization, in particular didactics and psychology. Most books focus on primary education. A fair number of publications is in a foreign language.

Het archief van de grafisch ontwerper Bas Oudt (1956-2014) werd in 2009 door hemzelf geschonken aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Na zijn overlijden in 2014 volgde een aanvulling. Het archief bevat drie meter aan materiaal: grafische eindproducten als boeken, brochures, catalogi, huisstijlen, affiches naast enkele schetsen en werktekeningen. Ook is er materiaal uit de tijd dat Oudt verbonden was als student en docent aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam.

The archive of graphic designer Bas Oudt (1956-2014) was donated to the University of Amsterdam by Oudt himself in 2009. More material was added following his death in 2014. The archive stretches to three metres of material, including graphic end products such as books, brochures, catalogues, house styles, posters, as well as a number of sketches and work drawings. There is also material from the time Oudt had been associated with the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam as a student and a lecturer.

The Paper Publications Society (1950-1995) werd opgericht door E.J. Labarre met als uitgangspunt het publiceren van de reeks Monumenta chartae papyraceae historiam illustrantia, een serie werken over papiergeschiedenis en de geschiedenis van watermerken. Het archief geeft inzicht in de totstandkoming van de uitgaven hieruit.

The Paper Publications Society (1950-1995) was founded by E.J. Labarre with the purpose of publishing Monumenta chartae papyraceae historiam illustrantia, a series of works on the history of paper and watermarks. The archive provides insight into the production of the ensuing publications.

Bibliotheek van de Pharmaceutische Studenten-Vereeniging Luctor et Emergo, in 1902 overgenomen en vervolgens uitgebreid door de Koninklijke Nederlandse Maatschappij ter bevordering der Pharmacie (KNMP). De bibliotheek bevat boeken, tijdschriften en enkele handschriften betreffende de farmacie en aanverwante vakken, voornamelijk uit de negentiende eeuw.

The 'Algemeene Pharmaceutische Bibliotheek' – the general pharmaceutical library - was formed by the student union 'Luctor at Emergo'. In 1902 it was taken over and extended by the KNMP, the Royal Dutch Society for the Promotion of Pharmacy. The library contains books, periodicals and several manuscripts about pharmacy and related fields. The collection dates mainly from the 19th century.

De (internationale) Philhelleensche Vereeniging werd in 1888 te Amsterdam opgericht met het doel de studie en verbreiding van de Griekse taal en literatuur. Daartoe werd een bibliotheek ingericht. De collectie bestaat uit algemene, historische, taalkundige en literaire werken in het Nieuwgrieks en uit taalkundige werken in andere talen over het klassieke en het moderne Grieks en uit geschiedkundige publicaties over Griekenland en de Griekse literatuur.

The (international) 'Philhelleensche Vereeniging' was established in 1888 in Amsterdam with the aim to study and propagate Greek language and literature. For that reason a library was set up. The collection consists of general, historical, linguistic and literary publications in modern Greek and linguistic works in other languages about classical and modern Greek. Besides this, there are historical publications about Greece and Greek literature.

N.G. Pierson was een van Nederlands belangrijkste economen. Hij was hoogleraar in de staathuishoudkunde aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam (1877-1885), president van De Nederlandsche Bank (1884-1891) en minister van Financiën (1891-1894, 1897-1901). De collectie bestaat uit een bibliotheek, dictaten van zijn colleges en enkele andere aan zijn functie van hoogleraar gerelateerde documenten en objecten.

N.G. Pierson was one of the most important economists of the Netherlands. He was the professor of economics at the Universiteit van Amsterdam (1877-1885), president of the national bank, the Nederlandsche Bank, (1884-1891) and minister of finance (1891-1894, 1897-1901). The collection consists of his library, lecture notes and several objects and documents related to his function as a professor.

De collectie Leo Polak bestaat uit ongeveer 2000 boeken uit de nalatenschap van strafrechtstheoreticus en filosoof Leo Polak (1880-1941).

De collectie H.P.G. Quack (1834-1917) bestaat uit werken van (utopisch-)socialisten en anarchisten en uit werken met betrekking tot de sociale geschiedenis van de negentiende eeuw. Quack was publicist en hoogleraar in de economie. Daarnaast vervulde hij functies in het Nederlandse bankwezen. Hij is het meest bekend door zijn levenswerk De socialisten, waarin hij de opvattingen van de meest uiteenlopende socialistische denkers weergaf. Deze studie resulteerde ook in een persoonlijke bibliotheek met werken van Marx, Engels, Kropotkin en anderen die hij met grote moeite zelf, vooral in Frankrijk, bemachtigde.

The collection of Hendrik Peter Godfried Quack (1834-1917) contains works by socialists, utopian socialists and anarchists and works bearing on the social history of the nineteenth century. Quack was a publicist and a professor of political economy. In addition he held several posts in Dutch banking. He is best known for his magnum opus DE SOCIALISTEN, in which he discussed the views of a wide spectrum of socialist thinkers. For this study he collected a private library featuring works of Marx, Engels, Kropotkin and many others which he had painstakingly acquired himself, mainly in France.

Library of the Remonstrant community of Amsterdam (1636-present). The primary focus of the collection is on books, prints, pamphlets and manuscripts from the beginning of the seventeenth century to the first half of the eighteenth century.

Franz Wilhelm Rive (1804-1873) studeerde medicijnen te Bonn en te Utrecht. Hij vestigde zijn reputatie tijdens de beruchte cholera-epidemie die Amsterdam in 1832 trof en waarover hij in 1833 een proefschrift schreef. Rive vestigde zich na zijn promotie als medicus in Amsterdam. De collectie bestaat uit ca. 900 gedrukte werken waarvan 230 dateren van voor 1800. Daaronder zijn onder meer de tweede druk van Vesalius De corporis humana en een editie van Galenus uit 1528. De collectie bevat voorts 158, veelal inmiddels zeldzaam geworden 19e-eeuwse werken over kuuroorden. De collectie van Franz Wilhelm Rive geeft in de eerste plaats een beeld van het soort medische werken dat in de 19de eeuw in de belangstelling van artsen stond.

Franz Wilhelm Rive (1804-1873) studied medicine in Bonn and in Utrecht. He earned his reputation during the notorious cholera epidemic that hit Amsterdam in 1832 and about which he wrote his thesis in 1833. After receiving his doctorate Rive established himself as a practitioner in Amsterdam. The collection consists of about 900 printed works of which 230 date from before 1800, such as the second edition of De corporis humana by Vesalius and an edition of Galenus from 1528. Besides this, the collection contains 158 19th century works about health resorts. Many of these works have become quite rare by now. Rive's collection gives an impression of the kind of medical publications in which practitioners were interested in the 19th century.

Leeser Rosenthal (1794-1868) verzamelde zeldzame en belangrijke hebraïca en judaïca op het gebied van religie, filosofie, literatuur, Haskalah, liturgie, mystiek en de geschiedenis van het jodendom. Bij zijn overlijden was zijn verzameling de grootste privécollectie in Duitsland op het gebied van hebraïca en judaïca. Nadat pogingen om de collectie als geheel te verkopen mislukt waren, besloten Rosenthals erfgenamen de collectie aan de gemeente Amsterdam te schenken en deze te laten opnemen in de Universiteitsbibliotheek. In 1880 werden 6000 banden, waaronder 32 handschriften en 12 Hebreeuwse incunabelen, aan de universiteitsbibliotheek overgedragen op voorwaarde dat de boeken 'ten eeuwigen dage bij elkander [zouden] blijven en in een der vertrekken van de Universiteitsbibliotheek bewaard [zouden] worden onder den naam van Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana'.

Leeser Rosenthal (1794-1868) was a collector of rare and important Hebraica and Judaica covering religion, philosophy, literature, Haskalah, liturgy, mysticism and the history of Judaism. At the time of his death his was the largest private collection in Germany in the field of Judaica and Hebraica. After attempts to sell the collection in its entirety failed, Rosenthal's heirs decided to bequeath the collection to the city of Amsterdam and have it incorporated into the University Library. In 1880, 6000 volumes, including 32 manuscripts and 12 Hebrew incunabula, were handed over to the University Library on the condition that the books '[should] stay together in perpetuity and [should] be kept in one of the rooms of the University Library under the name Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana'.
