De Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana herbergt de verzameling joodse boeken van de Bijzondere Collecties. De basis voor de bibliotheek werd gelegd door Leeser Rosenthal (Nasielsk 1794 - Hannover 1868), die bij zijn dood een collectie naliet van zo'n 6.000 banden. In de jaren na zijn dood hebben zijn erven tevergeefs getracht de collectie te verkopen. Uiteindelijk heeft de familie de bibliotheek in 1880 aan de gemeente Amsterdam geschonken. Tot de Eerste Wereldoorlog werd de uitbreiding van de bibliotheek gefinancierd uit fondsen die door de familie ter beschikking werden gesteld; daarna nam de Universiteitsbibliotheek de kosten op zich. Eenmaal in Amsterdam ontwikkelde de collectie zich van een Duitse Verlichtingsbibliotheek tot een algemene bibliotheek over de joodse geschiedenis en cultuur, met werken in alle talen waarvan joden zich in de loop der eeuwen hebben bediend. De bibliotheek omvat inmiddels ongeveer 100.000 werken. In de loop van de 130 jaar die de bibliotheek zich in de Universiteitsbibliotheek van Amsterdam bevindt, is de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse Jodendom het belangrijkste zwaartepunt geworden.

The Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana houses the Special Collections Department's Jewish book collection. The basis of the library was formed by the collection of Leeser Rosenthal (Nasielsk 1794 - Hanover 1868), which amounted to 6,000 volumes at the time of his death. In the years following his death, his heirs tried – unsuccessfully – to sell the collection. The family finally bequeathed the library to the City of Amsterdam in 1880. Up until the First World War, the library was expanded on the basis of funds made available by the family; after this time the University bore the costs itself. From being a library of German enlightenment, once it arrived in Amsterdam the Rosenthaliana developed into a general library of Jewish history and culture, with works in every language used by Jews throughout the centuries. By now the library contains around 100,000 works. In the 130 years that the library has been in Amsterdam, its main focus has become the history of Dutch Jewry.

De collectie uit Moskou gerecupereerde boeken is een samenstelling van boeken die gedurende de Tweede Wereldoorlog vanuit Nederland werden geplunderd. De boeken werden in de nadagen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog door de nazi’s naar een opslag in Ratibor gebracht. Na de oorlog werden de boeken als oorlogsbuit meegenomen door de Sovjets, waarna de boeken in respectievelijk Minsk en Moskou verbleven. In 1992 werden de boeken vanuit Moskou gerecupereerd naar Nederland. De collectie is een allerhande verzameling van romans, dichtbundels en historische werken uit voornamelijk 1900-1940. Het belang van deze collectie ligt in de historische reis die deze boeken hebben meegemaakt.

The collection of books recovered from Moscow consists of a combination of books that were looted from the Netherlands during WWII. Towards the end of the war, the Nazis had taken them to a storage facility in Racibórz; after the war they were seized by the Soviets as war trophy, to be stored in respectively Minsk and Moscow. The books were returned to the Netherlands from Moscow in 1992. The collection consists of a mix of novels, poetry volumes and historical works mainly from 1900-1940. The significance of this collection lies in the historical journey of these books.
