De collectie uit Moskou gerecupereerde boeken is een samenstelling van boeken die gedurende de Tweede Wereldoorlog vanuit Nederland werden geplunderd. De boeken werden in de nadagen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog door de nazi’s naar een opslag in Ratibor gebracht. Na de oorlog werden de boeken als oorlogsbuit meegenomen door de Sovjets, waarna de boeken in respectievelijk Minsk en Moskou verbleven. In 1992 werden de boeken vanuit Moskou gerecupereerd naar Nederland. De collectie is een allerhande verzameling van romans, dichtbundels en historische werken uit voornamelijk 1900-1940. Het belang van deze collectie ligt in de historische reis die deze boeken hebben meegemaakt.

The collection of books recovered from Moscow consists of a combination of books that were looted from the Netherlands during WWII. Towards the end of the war, the Nazis had taken them to a storage facility in Racibórz; after the war they were seized by the Soviets as war trophy, to be stored in respectively Minsk and Moscow. The books were returned to the Netherlands from Moscow in 1992. The collection consists of a mix of novels, poetry volumes and historical works mainly from 1900-1940. The significance of this collection lies in the historical journey of these books.

Het archief van uitgeverij J.M. Meulenhoff, opgericht in 1895 en nog steeds actief, bestaat uit bedrijfsadministratie, documentatie, contracten, productiedossiers en foto- en illustratiemateriaal. Het archief geeft een goed beeld van de keten van boekproductie en boekpromotie bij een grote Nederlandse uitgeverij.

Founded in 1895, the archive of J.M. Meulenhoff, a publishing house still active today, consists of the company’s accounting, documentation, contracts, production files and photographs and illustrations. The archive offers a good impression of all stages of book production and promotion in a large Dutch publishing company.

De ruim 50.000 foto’s in deze collectie zijn afkomstig uit het bezit van het in 1865 opgerichte Nieuw Israëlietisch Weekblad (NIW). Ze geven een goed beeld van de belangstelling voor het Nederlandse en internationaal georiënteerde Joodse leven. Bijna de helft van de opnamen is gemaakt in Nederland; ongeveer een derde in het huidige Israël. De collectie is opgebouwd vanaf 1921, toen de eerste foto in het NIW gepubliceerd werd, en beslaat analoge foto’s en negatieven uit de periode 1850-2007, zij het met de nadruk op naoorlogse foto’s. Van het vooroorlogse Joodse leven bewijzen een kleine duizend foto’s. Bijna driekwart van het materiaal is nooit gepubliceerd in het NIW, en van een derde is de naam van de fotograaf bekend. In het Kenniscentrum van het Joods Museum (Amsterdam) is de collectie digitaal te raadplegen.

This collection containing over 50,000 photos is derived from Nieuw Israëlietisch Weekblad (NIW), a periodical founded in 1865. The photos offer a good impression of the interest in Jewish life in the Netherlands and elsewhere. Almost half of the photos were taken in the Netherlands; about one third in present-day Israel. The collection was started in 1921, when NIW featured its first photograph, and contains analogue photographs and negatives from the period 1850-2007, though with an emphasis on post-war photographs. Jewish life before WWII is documented in around a thousand photographs. Almost three quarters of the material was never published in NIW; of one third of the material the photographer’s name is known. The collection can be viewed online at the Resource centre of the Jewish Cultural Quarter (Amsterdam).

Jan van Toorn (1932-2020) was een Nederlands grafisch ontwerper, die ook internationaal grote bekendheid genoot. Zijn archief bevat naast correspondentie en materiaal dat het ontwerpproces documenteert ook drukwerk, waaronder catalogi, affiches en kalenders. Het archief biedt een waardevolle blik op het leven en werk van een van de grootste namen in de geschiedenis van het grafisch ontwerpen in Nederland.

Jan van Toorn (1932-2020) was a Dutch graphic designer of international repute. In addition to correspondence and material documenting the design process, his archive also contains print work, including catalogues, posters and calendars. The archive offers valuable information on the life and work of one of the greatest names in the history of graphic design in the Netherlands.
