Een collectie gedrukte werken, prenten, portretten en handschriften van en over de Nederlandse schrijver en dichter Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679) uit het bezit van A.D. de Vries (1851-1884). Een deel van deze collectie was tentoongesteld op de belangrijke Vondeltentoonstelling in 1879.

Derk Buddingh, kostschoolhouder in Den Haag, was medeoprichter van het Nederlands Onderwijzers Genootschap (1842) en de Paedagogische Bibliotheek (1867). Hij sloot zijn loopbaan af als bibliothecaris van wat nu de bibliotheek van de Technische Universiteit in Delft is. Buddinghs brede belangstelling blijkt uit het actieve lidmaatschap van enkele belangrijke culturele instellingen. De collectie, die geheel uit handschriftelijk materiaal bestaat, vormde zijn persoonlijk archief en weerspiegelt zijn activiteiten op het brede terrein van onderwijs en opvoeding, geschiedenis en Nederlandse letterkunde. Het gaat hierbij om brieven, artikelen, lezingen, manuscripten, vertalingen en persoonlijke aantekeningen.

Together with some others Derk Buddingh, director of a boarding school in The Hague, founded the Dutch teachers association ('Nederlands Onderwijzers Genootschap') in 1842 and the Paedagogische Bibliotheek (pedagogic library) in 1867. He ended his career as the librarian of what is nowadays the library of the Delft University of Technology. Buddingh's broad interest appears from the fact that he was also actively involved as a member of a number of important cultural institutions. The collection, which consists entirely of manuscripts, was his personal archive and reflects his activities in the broad areas of history, Dutch literature and in education and upbringing. The material consists of letters, articles, presentations, manuscripts, translations and personal notes.

Het Geschiedkundig Dispuutgezelschap C.L.I.O. werd in 1882 opgericht als dispuut van het Amsterdamsch Studenten Corps (A.S.C.). Het stelde zich de geschiedbeoefening in haar gehele omvang ten doel. Het archief bestaat deels uit de schriftelijke neerslag van de activiteiten van het gezelschap, zoals notulen van vergaderingen, correspondentie en financiële stukken. Het grootste gedeelte vormen echter de door leden vervaardigde scripties, kritieken en redes. Het zwaartepunt ligt op de periode vóór 1902, de bloeiperiode van het gezelschap.

CLIO, the debating society for students of history, was founded in 1882 as the debating society of the ASC (Amsterdam student union). It focused on all aspects of the study of history. The collection consists partly of archival material about the society's activities, such as minutes, correspondence and financial documents. The largest part, however, consists of dissertations, reviews and speeches written by the members of the society. The main part of the collection is from the period before 1902, when the society was in its prime.

Het Historisch Litterarisch Leesgezelschap Clio werd heropgericht te Amsterdam in 1856. De leden hielden zich bezig met de aankoop en lezing van de belangrijkste recente verschenen werken over geschiedenis en literatuur. De werken werden naderhand geveild. Het gezelschap rekende verscheidene Amsterdamse notabelen tot haar leden. In 1870 werd het gezelschap opgeheven. Het archief bevat de weerslag van haar activiteiten, onder andere lijsten van alle aangeschafte boeken.

The 'Historisch Litterarisch Leesgezelschap Clio', a historical and literary society, was re-established in Amsterdam in 1856. The members bought and read recently published books on history and literature. Afterwards, the books were sold in auctions. Among the members were several important inhabitants of Amsterdam. The society was discontinued in 1870. Its activities are represented in the archive, which contains, among other things, lists of all the books that were acquired.

De collectie van de Duitse Bibliotheek bevat in hoofdzaak Duitstalige literaire werken uit de jaren vijftig en zestig van de twintigste eeuw.

The collection of the Duitse Bibliotheek (German Library) mainly contains German-language literary works dating from the 1950s and 1960s.

Jean-Paul Franssens (1938-2003) was schrijver, beeldend kunstenaar en operaregisseur. Het archief bevat stukken betreffende zijn beeldend kunstenaarschap en zijn theaterwerk. Van zijn complete literaire werk – gedichten, verhalen, romans en autobiografisch werk – is hier materiaal te vinden. Naast dat alles bevat het archief nog brieven, tekeningen, foto's en personalia.

Jean-Paul Franssens (1938-2003) was a writer, visual artist and opera director. The archive contains items relating to his artistic heritage and his theatre work. There are also documents dealing with his entire literary output – poems, stories, novels and autobiographical work. In addition, the archive also contains letters, drawings, photographs and personal documents.

Het Frederik van Eeden-Genootschap, opgericht in 1934, stelt zich ten doel het leven en werk van Frederik van Eeden te bestuderen en diens gedachtegoed levend te houden. Daartoe heeft het genootschap een omvangrijke collectie materiaal met betrekking tot Van Eeden bijeengebracht, dat grotendeels afkomstig is uit zijn nalatenschap. De collectie bevat een grote hoeveelheid originele manuscripten, correspondentie en persoonlijke documenten. Voorts is veel documentatie en iconografisch materiaal aanwezig. De schrijver, psychiater en maatschappijhervormer Frederik Willem van Eeden (1860-1932) heeft grote invloed uitgeoefend op de literaire en maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen in zijn tijd, onder meer door de oprichting van de woon- en werkgemeenschap Walden. De collectie is onmisbaar voor de bestudering van zijn leven en werk en biedt inzicht in het literaire, intellectuele en maatschappelijke discours van zijn generatie.

The Frederik van Eeden Genootschap (Frederik van Eeden Society) was founded in 1934 and aims to investigate the life and work of Frederik van Eeden and to keep his ideas alive. As such, the society collected a huge amount of material both of Van Eeden and about him, a lot of which originates from his inheritance. The collection contains a large number of original manuscripts, correspondence and personal documents. Besides this, there is extensive documentation and iconographical material. The writer, psychiatrist and social reformer Frederik Willem van Eeden (1860-1932) exercised a large influence on the literary and social developments of his time, among other things by establishing the commune Walden. The collection is indispensible for research into his life and work and offers insight into the literary, intellectual and social debates of his time.

Arnon Grunberg (1971) debuteerde in 1994 met de roman Blauwe maandagen. In twintig jaar schreef hij een indrukwekkend oeuvre bijeen, bestaande uit romans, verhalen, essays en journalistiek werk, en ontwikkelde hij zich tot Nederlands meest spraakmakende romancier, essayist en columnist. Zijn 'levend archief' zal periodiek worden aangevuld. Het omvat manuscripten, typoscripten, boeken, kranten en tijdschriften, correspondentie, reisdocumenten, knipsels, audiovisueel materiaal, agenda's en administratie. Het archief toont de ontwikkeling van het indrukwekkende oeuvre van een schrijver en van zijn imago.

Arnon Grunberg (1971) debuted in 1994 with the novel Blauwe maandagen (translated into English as Blue Mondays). In the space of twenty years he has created an impressive oeuvre, ranging from novels, stories and essays to journalistic work. He has grown into the Netherlands’s most influential novelist, essayist and columnist. His 'living archive' will be supplemented from time to time and comprises manuscripts, typescripts, books, newspapers and magazines, correspondence, travel documents, clippings, audio-visual materials, appointment diaries and admin. The archive reflects the growth of a writer’s impressive oeuvre and his public image.

Het archief van Jacob Israël de Haan bevat correspondentie, persoonlijke aantekeningen, publicaties, collegedictaten, gedichten, foto's en enkele onuitgegeven gedichten van deze joodse schrijver, dichter, journalist en jurist. De Haan werd niet alleen bekend door zijn publicaties, maar ook door zijn betrokkenheid bij zowel het zionisme als de joodse orthodoxie. Hij werd in 1924 in Jeruzalem vermoord. Het archief bestaat uit materiaal dat Jacob Israël de Haan tijdens zijn leven zelf schonk aan de Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana en uit zijn persoonlijke nalatenschap. Ook bevat het archief een aantal aanvullingen van later datum die onder andere te maken hebben met de zorg voor het archief. Het materiaal dateert voornamelijk uit de periode 1904-1924 en is van groot belang omdat het een afspiegeling vormt van het veelzijdige karakter en van de vele bezigheden van De Haan.

The archive of Jacob Israël de Haan contains material from this Jewish writer, poet, journalist and lawyer. In addition to his publications, De Haan was known for his involvement in both Zionism and Jewish orthodoxy. He was murdered in Jerusalem 1924. The archive comprises material that De Haan donated to the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana during his lifetime, as well as items from his personal estate. It also contains several later additions, relating to such matters as the care of the archive. Most of the archive material dates from the period 1904-1924 and is of immense significance, in that it reflects De Haan's versatility and many pursuits. The archive contains correspondence, personal notes, publications, lecture notes, poems and photos, including a few poems that have never been published.

Carel Jacob (Karel) Hildesheim (1875-1931) vertaalde verhalen en poëzie uit het Jiddisch. In 1926 werd de vertaling die hij maakte van 'Joodsche volksverhalen' van J.L. Perets (1851-1915) uitgegeven bij de Wereldbibliotheek. Het archief bestaat uit zijn manuscripten van vertalingen in het Nederlands. Het merendeel betreft vertalingen van het werk van J.L. Perets (1851-1915), waaronder 'Joodse volksverhalen'. Verder zijn er onder andere vertalingen van werk van Salomon An-Ski (1863-1920), S.G. Frug (1860-1916), Morris Rosenfeld (1862-1923), Sholem Asch (1880-1957), Chaim Nachman Bialik (1873-1934), Sholem Aleichem (1859-1916) en Fritz Löhner-Beda (1883-1942).

Carel Jacob Hildesheim (1875-1931) translated stories and poetry from Yiddish. His translation of Jewish Folktales by J.L. Perets (1851-1915) was published by De Wereldbibliotheek in 1926. The archive of Carel Jacob Hildesheim features manuscripts of his translations into Dutch. The majority of these manuscripts are translations of the work of J.L. Perets. Other translations include works by Salomon An-Ski (1863-1920), S.G. Frug (1860-1916), Morris Rosenfeld (1862-1923), Sholem Asch (1880-1957), Chaim Nachman Bialik (1873-1934), Sholem Aleichem (1859-1916) and Fritz Löhner-Beda (1883-1942).

De collectie verzameld door J.C. de Koning en aangevuld met werken uit de collectie van S.J. Hingst, bestaat uit werken op het gebied van de staats- en rechtswetenschappen, alsmede van de negentiende-eeuwse letterkunde.

This collection, brought together by J.C. de Koning and supplemented by works from the collection of S.J. Hingst, consists of works on political and legal science as well as nineteenth-century literature.

Het archief is afkomstig van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Uitgeversbond (KNUB). Deze bond behartigde de gemeenschappelijke belangen van uitgevers in binnen- en buitenland. Het archief bestaat uit vergaderstukken, notulen, projectdossiers en correspondentie van het KNUB-bestuur, het bondsbureau en diverse commissies en stuur- en werkgroepen. In het archief zijn onder meer stukken opgenomen van het bestuur en commissies van de vijf hoofdgroepen waaruit de uitgeversbond sinds 1973 was opgebouwd. The archive comes from the Koninklijke Nederlandse Uitgeversbond (KNUB; Royal Dutch Publishers’ Union). This union represented the shared interests of publishers at home and abroad. The archive consists of documents of meetings, minutes, project files and correspondence of the KNUB board, of the union office and of various committees and working and steering groups. The archive includes documents from the board and the committees of the five main divisions to have constituted the publishers’ union since 1973. These are the Groep Algemene Uitgevers (GAU; General Publishers), Groep Educatieve Uitgeverijen (GEU; Educational Publishers), Groep Importeurs (GIM; Importers), Groep Multimediale Uitgeverijen (GMU; Multimedia Publishers) and Groep Wetenschappelijke Uitgevers (GWU; Academic Publishers). The archive provides a good picture of the entire chain of publishing activities in the Netherlands and abroad.

De Leidse leesbibliotheek Van der Hoek werd gesticht door de gebroeders Murray, in 1822 overgenomen door C.C. van der Hoek (1793-1876) en voortgezet door zijn zoons. Het was een bloeiend bedrijf met duizenden populaire romans. De collectie bevat naast Nederlandstalige werken ook Franse, Duitse en Engelse titels.

The lending library Van der Hoek in Leiden was established by the Murray brothers and taken over in 1822 by C.C. van der Hoek (1793-1876). Later, his sons continued the library, which was a flourishing company with thousands of popular novels. Apart from Dutch publications, the collection also includes publications in French, German and English.

Collectie boeken afkomstig van het Leesmuseum voor Vrouwen, een negentiende-eeuwse particuliere leenbibliotheek in Amsterdam opgeheven in de jaren 1960.

Het archief van uitgeverij J.M. Meulenhoff, opgericht in 1895 en nog steeds actief, bestaat uit bedrijfsadministratie, documentatie, contracten, productiedossiers en foto- en illustratiemateriaal. Het archief geeft een goed beeld van de keten van boekproductie en boekpromotie bij een grote Nederlandse uitgeverij.

Founded in 1895, the archive of J.M. Meulenhoff, a publishing house still active today, consists of the company’s accounting, documentation, contracts, production files and photographs and illustrations. The archive offers a good impression of all stages of book production and promotion in a large Dutch publishing company.

Nescio werd als Jan Hendrik Frederik Grönloh geboren in 1882 en overleed in 1961. Hij was werkzaam als procuratiehouder bij een handelsfirma, maar zijn grote liefde lag bij de literatuur. In 1911 debuteerde hij in De Gids met zijn beroemde verhaal over de zwerver Japi, De Uitvreter. Ook de verhalen Dichtertje, Titaantjes en Mene Tekel zijn zeer geliefd geworden. In zijn sterfjaar verscheen nog een bundel korte verhalen onder de titel Boven het dal. In 1996 kwam daar nog het Natuurdagboek bij. De collectie bevat onder meer uitgaven van het werk van Nescio, secundaire literatuur, beeldmateriaal en enkele manuscripten.

Nescio was born as Jan Hendrik Frederik Grönloh in 1882 and died in 1961. He worked as a managing clerk for the Holland-Bombay Trading Company, but literature was his enduring passion. He debuted in the literary magazine De Gids in 1911 with his famous story of the vagabond Japi, De Uitvreter (The Sponger). The stories Dichtertje (Little Poet), Titaantjes (Young Titans) and Mene Tekel also gained great popularity. A volume of short stories entitled Boven het dal (Above the Valley) appeared in the year he died. Finally in 1996 his Natuurdagboek (Nature Diary) was published. The collection includes editions of Nescio’s works, secondary literature, visual material and a few manuscripts.

De nalatenschap van de Amsterdamse koopman en verzamelaar Gerardus van Papenbroeck bevat een belangrijk deel van zijn handschriftencollectie (bestaande uit ongeveer zevenhonderd manuscripten en brieven van Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft), het grootste deel van zijn portrettencollectie (49 portretten van geleerde en beroemde mannen) en een schilderij van de ruïnes van Palmyra. De collectie is onderdeel van een van de weinige humanistische verzamelingen die in hun geheel in Nederland behouden zijn gebleven.

This collection consists of nearly 700 manuscripts and letters by the 17th century Dutch writer and historian Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft, originating from the legacy of the Amsterdam trader and collector Gerardus van Papenbroeck (1673-1743). The collection also contains 49 of Van Papenbroeck's portraits of scholars and famous men and a large painting of the ruins of Palmyra, which shows his interest in antiquity. The collection of Van Papenbroeck is one of the few humanistic collections in the Netherlands which are still complete.

De Nederlandse auteur Siegfried van Praag (1899-2002) groeide op in een Amsterdams joods milieu in de Amsterdamse Plantagebuurt. Binnen het gecultiveerde gezin werd veel aandacht besteed aan de Franse taal en cultuur en werd het zionisme ondersteund. Deze achtergrond is terug te vinden in de thematiek en de sfeer van Van Praags literaire werk dat van 1925 tot 1988 gepubliceerd werd. Naast romans schreef Van Praag essays, artikelen en recensies van boeken voor diverse tijdschriften. Het archief van Siegfried van Praag geeft een bijna compleet overzicht van zijn literaire werk in de vorm van autografen. Een groot deel van het archief bestaat uit correspondentie.

The Dutch author Siegfried van Praag (1899-2002) grew up in the Amsterdam-Jewish milieu of the Plantage neighbourhood in Amsterdam. His cultured family placed heavy emphasis on French language and culture, as well as on support for Zionism. This background is reflected in the themes and atmosphere of Van Praag's literary work published between 1925 and 1988. In addition to novels, Van Praag wrote essays, articles and book reviews for a range of periodicals and magazines. The archive of Siegfried van Praag provides a fairly complete overview of his literary work in the form of original manuscripts. Correspondence makes up a large part of the archive.

Jurist, letterkundige en publicist op het gebied van de volksverlichting. Betreft zowel brieven die Robidé van der Aa ontving als redacteur van diverse almanakken en tijdschriften – waaronder de Almanak voor het schone en goede en De Volksbode – en brieven met genealogische gegevens die hij gebruikte voor de publicatie van Oud-Nederland in ... burgen en kasteelen geschetst als brieven van meer persoonlijke aard. Biedt inzicht in het letterkundig en maatschappelijk leven in de eerst helft van de negentiende eeuw en vormt een bron voor genealogisch onderzoek naar de Nederlandse ridderschap.

Robidé was a lawyer, a man of letters and a publisher of material in the field of popular enlightenment. The collection consists of letters which Robidé received from various magazines and almanacs as an editor – among others the Almanak voor het schone en goede, an almanac for all things beautiful and good and De Volksbode, a newspaper – as well as letters with genealogical information which he used for the publication of his book Oud-Nederland in ... burgen en kasteelen geschetst, about fortresses and castles in the Netherlands. Besides this, the collection includes letters that were more personal in nature. The collection gives a good insight into the literary and social life of the first half of the 19th century. It is also a source of information for research into the genealogy of the Dutch chivalry.

De papieren nalatenschap van Jan Stals (1892-1969) bestaat grotendeels uit ongepubliceerde manuscripten van Franse gedichten en vertalingen van toneel en poëzie in het Frans; daarnaast documentatie in de vorm van knipsels, onder meer met betrekking tot de Vondel-receptie in Frankrijk. Verder enkele manuscripten en verwante egodocumenten, en documentatie met betrekking tot de door Jan Stals gemaakte Franse Vondelvertalingen.

The documentary legacy of Jan Stals (1892-1969) consists mainly of unpublished manuscripts of French poetry and translations of French drama and poetry. Besides this, there are documents about the reception of the work of the Dutch writer and poet Joost van den Vondel and several manuscripts, personal papers and documentation about the French Vondel translations made by Jan Stals.

De journalist, Verwey-biograaf en dichter Maurits Uyldert werkte onder andere bij het Algemeen Handelsblad (1923-1946) waar hij redacteur voor letteren en toneel was. Ook was hij medewerker van het tijdschrift De beweging. Hij schreef een driedelige biografie over Albert Verwey die tussen 1948 en 1959 werd gepubliceerd. Het archief bevat literair werk (in handschrift, typoscript en proefdruk), correspondentie, kopij voor artikelen, werkmateriaal, personalia en publicaties. Het archief is van belang voor de bestudering van het Nederlandse journalistieke leven in het interbellum en van het leven en het werk van Albert Verwey en Alex Gutteling.

The journalist, Verwey biographer and poet Maurits Uyldert worked as a theatre and literature editor for the newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad (1923-1946) and as an editor for the periodical De Beweging. He produced a three-volume biography of Dutch poet Albert Verwey, which was published between 1948 and 1959. The archive includes literary work (manuscripts, typescripts and proofs), correspondence, copy for articles, working material, personal documents and published works. The archive is important for the study of the Dutch journalistic scene in the interwar years, as well as for the life and work of Albert Verwey and the Dutch poet and critic Alex Gutteling.

Handschriftelijk materiaal uit de nalatenschap van neerlandicus Jacob Visser. Betreft correspondentie voor zijn in 1933 verschenen biografie over de schrijver Willem Levinus Penning (1840-1924) en een door Visser – waarschijnlijk antiquarisch – verworven verzameling van 118 brieven uit het archief van de Haarlemse uitgeverij W. Gosler & Co.

Manuscript material from the legacy of Jacob Visser, a teacher of Dutch language and literature who lived from 1899 to 1989. It contains personal material - mainly correspondence - about his dissertation on the life of the Dutch author Willem Levinus Penning (1840-1924), published in 1933. The collection also includes 118 letters, mostly written between 1882 and 1887, obtained by Jacob Visser from the archive of the Dutch publisher Willem Gosler (1858-1921).

De collectie Vondeliana van rasverzamelaar A.Th. Hartkamp (1848-1924) vormde de basis van het in 1901 opgerichte Vondel-Museum. De collectie bestaat uit handschriften, gedrukte werken, schilderijen, prenten, portretten, penningen en documentatie over Vondel.

A collection connected to the Dutch writer and poet Joost van den Vondel, put together by A.Th. Hartkamp (1848-1924). It formed the basis of the Vondel-Museum which was founded in 1901. The collection consists of manuscripts, books, paintings, prints, portraits and medallions as well as other documentary material about Vondel.

De collectie Vondeliana van J.H.W. Unger (1861-1904) bestaat voornamelijk uit zeventiende-eeuwse drukken, aangeschaft in 1908 door de Vereniging Het Vondel-Museum.

This collection of books by the Dutch writer and poet Joost van den Vondel was collected by the archivist J.H.W. Unger (1861-1904) and consists mainly of seventeenth century editions. They were purchased by the society 'The Vondel-Museum' in 1908 when Unger's collection was auctioned.

De stukken stammen met name uit zijn Amsterdamse jaren en zijn door hem geschonken aan, dan wel verzameld door, zijn vriendin Miep (Jacomina Jacoba Berendina) van 't Hoff-Kools (1893-1945). Het betreft manuscripten, typoscripten en publicaties van literair werk, artikelen en kookboeken. De collectie bevat verder correspondentie, foto's en opdrachtexemplaren van publicaties. Met latere aanvullingen.

This collection contains material by or about the poet, author, journalist and translator Johan Willem Frederik Werumeus Buning (1891-1958). Most of the material dates from the period he lived in Amsterdam and was given to or collected by his girl-friend, Miep van 't Hoff-Kools. The collection consists of manuscripts, typescripts, literary publications, articles and cookery books. Besides this, there is correspondence, there are photographs and there are copies of dedicated publications. Since the donation of the collection to the Special Collections in 2005, material has been added to the collection.

De collectie bestaat uit - vooral: handschriftelijk - materiaal van en met betrekking tot Henry Raymund Wildermuth. Deze Engelsman is in Nederland werkzaam geweest als vertaler Nederlands-Engels en Engels-Nederlands. Naast correspondentie, onder meer met auteurs als P.C. Boutens, Lodewijk van Deyssel en Felix Timmermans, zijn manuscripten aanwezig van Wildermuths eigen literaire werk en van zijn vertalingen van andermans werk.

This collection mainly consists of handwritten material by or about Henry Raymund Wildermuth. Wildermuth was an Englishman who worked as a translator of Dutch texts into English and vice versa. Besides correspondence with authors, such as P.C. Boutens, Lodewijk van Deyssel and Felix Timmermans, the collection also contains manuscripts of Wildermuth's own literary work and his translations.
