Portraits

Het archief van de boekwinkel, de drukkerij/uitgeverij, het veilinghuis, de leesbibliotheek en de kunstzaal te Middelburg (1801-1998) bevat de negentiende-eeuwse boekhouding van boekhandel en veilinghuis, boekhandelscatalogi, correspondentie, auteurscontracten, onkostenberekeningen, prospectussen, documentatie en een manuscript. Het archief biedt inzicht in de organisatie van een vooraanstaande negentiende-eeuwse provinciale boekhandel, zowel waar het de relaties met collega's als met particuliere klanten betreft.

This is an archive of a combined bookshop, printing office, publisher, auction house, reading room and art gallery in Middelburg that flourished from 1801 to 1998. It contains the accounting of the bookshop and the auction house, as well as booksellers' catalogues, correspondence, contracts with authors, estimates of expenses, prospectuses, documentation and a manuscript. Most items date from the nineteenth century. The archive offers insight into the organization of a prominent regional bookseller, both in his relations with other booksellers and with private customers.

Een collectie gedrukte werken, prenten, portretten en handschriften van en over de Nederlandse schrijver en dichter Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679) uit het bezit van A.D. de Vries (1851-1884). Een deel van deze collectie was tentoongesteld op de belangrijke Vondeltentoonstelling in 1879.

De Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak werd in 1845 opgericht als een vakbibliotheek voor leden van de Vereeniging ter bevordering van de belangen des Boekhandels. Later werd het verzamelbeleid verbreed tot de documentatie van de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse boekbedrijf. In 1958 werd de complete bibliotheek in bruikleen gegeven aan de Universiteitsbibliotheek Amsterdam. De collectie omvat een uitgebreide vakbibliotheek op gebied van het boekwezen (boekwetenschap, kopijrecht, typografie, grafische industrie, drukkerij, uitgeverij, boekhandel) en een grote verzameling bronnenmateriaal over de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse boek (boekproductie, boekhandel, boekwezen). De archieven van Nederlandse boekbedrijven en brancheorganisaties, boekhandelscatalogi, letterproeven vormen een belangrijk deel van de collectie. De Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak is een van de meest omvangrijke en veelzijdige boekhistorische collecties ter wereld. Voor de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse boekbedrijf vanaf de zeventiende eeuw omvat de collectie essentiële bronnen en documentatie.

The 'Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak', the library of the Book Trade, was founded as a professional library for members of the 'Vereeniging ter bevordering van de belangen des Boekhandels', the association promoting the interests of the book trade. Later the collection policy broadened and documentation on the history of the book trade was included. In 1958 the entire library was given on loan to the library of the University of Amsterdam. The collection contains an extensive professional library on books – including book history, copyright, typography, graphical industry, printing, publishing and book trade – and a large amount of source material about the history of books in the Netherlands – including the production of books, book trade and books in general. Important parts of the collection are the archives of Dutch book traders, booksellers' catalogues, catalogues of types and archives of printing businesses. Besides this, archives of a number of organizations and institutions active in the book trade are also kept. The library is one of the largest and most all-round book historical collections in the world. The collection contains essential sources and documents for the history of the Dutch book trade from the seventeenth century onwards.

De collectie bestaat uit foto's van hoogleraren, verbonden aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, van universitaire plechtigheden, van universitair leven, van universitaire gebouwen en van Amsterdamse studentengezelschappen uit de periode 1860-heden.

The collection consists of photographs of professors of the University of Amsterdam, of university life, of ceremonies and of buildings of the university. Besides this, there are photographs of fellowships of students. The entire collection dates from 1860 to this day.

Het Frederik van Eeden-Genootschap, opgericht in 1934, stelt zich ten doel het leven en werk van Frederik van Eeden te bestuderen en diens gedachtegoed levend te houden. Daartoe heeft het genootschap een omvangrijke collectie materiaal met betrekking tot Van Eeden bijeengebracht, dat grotendeels afkomstig is uit zijn nalatenschap. De collectie bevat een grote hoeveelheid originele manuscripten, correspondentie en persoonlijke documenten. Voorts is veel documentatie en iconografisch materiaal aanwezig. De schrijver, psychiater en maatschappijhervormer Frederik Willem van Eeden (1860-1932) heeft grote invloed uitgeoefend op de literaire en maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen in zijn tijd, onder meer door de oprichting van de woon- en werkgemeenschap Walden. De collectie is onmisbaar voor de bestudering van zijn leven en werk en biedt inzicht in het literaire, intellectuele en maatschappelijke discours van zijn generatie.

The Frederik van Eeden Genootschap (Frederik van Eeden Society) was founded in 1934 and aims to investigate the life and work of Frederik van Eeden and to keep his ideas alive. As such, the society collected a huge amount of material both of Van Eeden and about him, a lot of which originates from his inheritance. The collection contains a large number of original manuscripts, correspondence and personal documents. Besides this, there is extensive documentation and iconographical material. The writer, psychiatrist and social reformer Frederik Willem van Eeden (1860-1932) exercised a large influence on the literary and social developments of his time, among other things by establishing the commune Walden. The collection is indispensible for research into his life and work and offers insight into the literary, intellectual and social debates of his time.

De collectie heeft betrekking op de predikant Nicolaas Hendrik de Graaf (1823-1886), zijn vrouw Johanna Elisabeth Pierson (1830-1913) en hun jong overleden zoon Jan Lodewijk (1863-1881). Van N.H. de Graaf zijn preken en veel aan hem gerichte brieven bewaard. De meeste daarvan zijn afkomstig van familieleden, een klein aantal is afkomstig van de vrienden met wie De Graaf het theologisch studentengezelschap Secor Dabar oprichtte.

The collection concerns the clergyman Nicolaas Hendrik de Graaf (1823-1886), his wife Johanna Elisabeth Pierson (1830-1913), and their son Jan Lodewijk (1863-1881), whom they lost at an early age. Many of N.H. de Graaf's sermons and letters he received have been kept. Most of the letters were sent by members of his family, but there are also a few which he received from his friends with whom he set up the theological debating society Secor Dabar.

De Koninklijke Nederlandsche Maatschappij tot bevordering der Geneeskunst (KNMG) is de beroepsvereniging van Nederlandse artsen. Van meet af aan werd er door bestuur en leden aandacht besteed aan de geschiedenis van de geneeskunst in de Nederlanden. Daartoe werd een grote verzameling historisch materiaal aangelegd, waarvan de uitgebreide bibliotheek het belangrijkste onderdeel is. Er werd verzameld volgens de volgende criteria: uitgaven op het terrein van de geneeskunst en haar hulpwetenschappen, geschreven door een Nederlander en/of gepubliceerd binnen de huidige grenzen van Nederland en de voormalige overzeese gebiedsdelen. Als zodanig is de collectie nagenoeg volledig. Met name onder de uitgaven uit de 15e-18e eeuw zijn vele hoogtepunten, vanuit zowel medisch-historisch als boekhistorisch oogpunt. Op haar verzamelterrein behoort de bibliotheek van de KNMG tot de belangrijkste ter wereld.

The Koninklijke Nederlandsche Maatschappij tot bevordering der Geneeskunst (Royal Dutch Society for advancement of Medicine) is the trade union of the Dutch physicians. From the beginning onwards both board and members highly valued the history of medicine in the Netherlands. Therefore, a large collection of historical material was built, of which the extensive library was the most important part. The material was collected according to the following criteria. In the first place, it had to be published in the field of medicine and its auxiliary sciences. In addition, it had to be written by a Dutchman and/or published within the present boundaries of the Netherlands and overseas territories. As such, the collection is practically complete. It contains many highlights, in particular among the fifteenth to eighteenth century publications. The value of these is large, not only from a medical historical point of view, but also from a book historical point of view. Within the field of medicine the library of the KNMG is one of the most important in the world.

De nalatenschap van de Amsterdamse koopman en verzamelaar Gerardus van Papenbroeck bevat een belangrijk deel van zijn handschriftencollectie (bestaande uit ongeveer zevenhonderd manuscripten en brieven van Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft), het grootste deel van zijn portrettencollectie (49 portretten van geleerde en beroemde mannen) en een schilderij van de ruïnes van Palmyra. De collectie is onderdeel van een van de weinige humanistische verzamelingen die in hun geheel in Nederland behouden zijn gebleven.

This collection consists of nearly 700 manuscripts and letters by the 17th century Dutch writer and historian Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft, originating from the legacy of the Amsterdam trader and collector Gerardus van Papenbroeck (1673-1743). The collection also contains 49 of Van Papenbroeck's portraits of scholars and famous men and a large painting of the ruins of Palmyra, which shows his interest in antiquity. The collection of Van Papenbroeck is one of the few humanistic collections in the Netherlands which are still complete.

N.G. Pierson was een van Nederlands belangrijkste economen. Hij was hoogleraar in de staathuishoudkunde aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam (1877-1885), president van De Nederlandsche Bank (1884-1891) en minister van Financiën (1891-1894, 1897-1901). De collectie bestaat uit een bibliotheek, dictaten van zijn colleges en enkele andere aan zijn functie van hoogleraar gerelateerde documenten en objecten.

N.G. Pierson was one of the most important economists of the Netherlands. He was the professor of economics at the Universiteit van Amsterdam (1877-1885), president of the national bank, the Nederlandsche Bank, (1884-1891) and minister of finance (1891-1894, 1897-1901). The collection consists of his library, lecture notes and several objects and documents related to his function as a professor.

De collectie bestaat uit portretprenten van hoogleraren, verbonden aan het Athenaeum Illustre (1632), aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam (1877), of aan andere instellingen van Hoger Onderwijs in Amsterdam, met als zwaartepunt de 18e en 19e eeuw.

The collection consists of printed portraits of professors of the University of Amsterdam (1877), of its predecessor the Athenaeum Illustre (1632) and of professors of other educational institutes in Amsterdam. The prints date mostly from the eighteenth and nineteenth century.

De collectie bestaat uit ca. 520 geschilderde en gebeeldhouwde portretten, hoofdzakelijk van hoogleraren van het Athenaeum Illustre en haar opvolger, de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Daarnaast zijn er portretten van wetenschappers uit de collectie van Gerardus van Papenbroeck en portretten van letterkundigen, verzamelaars, boekhandelaren en vertegenwoordigers van belangrijke bewegingen, zoals het Réveil, van wie de archieven zich bij de Bijzondere Collecties bevinden. De belangrijkste Nederlandse portrettisten zijn in deze collectie vertegenwoordigd.

The collection contains approximately 520 painted portraits and busts, mostly of professors of the University of Amsterdam and of its predecessor, the Athenaeum Illustre. In addition, it contains portraits from the collection of Gerardus van Papenbroeck, portraits of writers, collectors, booksellers and of representatives of important movements, such as the Dutch religious movement Réveil, when these collections are contained in the archives of the Bijzondere Collecties. Several of the major Dutch portraitists are represented in this collection.

Het Réveil was een opwekkingsbeweging binnen het protestantisme tussen 1820 en 1860. De aanhang bestond uit predikanten en leken, overwegend afkomstig uit de gegoede burgerij. De beweging zette zich aanvankelijk sterk af tegen de relativering van het geloof en richtte zich later steeds meer op filantropisch werk. Belangrijke figuren uit de onstuimige beginperiode waren Willem de Clercq en Isaäc da Costa, terwijl Ottho Gerhard Heldring de grote man van de praktijk was. Rond 1860 viel de beweging uiteen, nog voordat onder Abraham Kuyper de kleine luyden het binnen de orthodoxie voor het zeggen kregen. De Stichting Het Réveil-Archief, opgericht in 1930, beoogt bronnen voor de geschiedschrijving van de beweging bijeen te brengen en de bestudering ervan te bevorderen. Het verzamelde materiaal heeft betrekking op enige tientallen aanhangers van de beweging. Het bestaat voor een belangrijk deel uit correspondentie van Réveilfiguren onderling en van Réveilfiguren met derden. Ook bevat de collectie veel egodocumenten, waaronder het omvangrijke dagboek van Willem de Clercq.

The Réveil was a revival movement within Protestantism between 1820 and 1860. Its supporters were to be found among clergymen and laypeople who largely derived from the upper middle classes. Initially the movement reacted strongly against the contemporary critique of faith, while later it increasingly focused on philanthropy. Leading figures from the tempestuous early years were Willem de Clercq and Isaac da Costa, while Ottho Gerhard Heldring was the motor behind the movement’s social work . The movement disintegrated around 1860, even before the ‘kleine luyden’ or lower middle classes gained the upper hand within the orthodoxy under the theologian, later Prime Minister, Abraham Kuyper. Established in 1930, the Stichting Het Réveil-Archief is a foundation that aims to collect sources for the historiography of the movement and promote the study of it. The collected material relates to a few dozen supporters of the movement, and consists for an important part of correspondence between figures of the Réveil movement themselves and with third parties. The collection is also rich in ego documents, including the extensive diary of Willem de Clercq.

De collectie omvat in de eerste plaats de bibliotheek van de Verenigde Doopsgezinde Gemeente Amsterdam (VDGA), begonnen in 1680. Deze bibliotheek werd vanaf 1735 gebruikt voor de Doopsgezinde Kweekschool. Zwaartepunten zijn geschriften van voor- en tegenstanders van het revolutionair anabaptisme, vroegreformatorische bijbels, theologische en polemische geschriften van vooraanstaande 17de-eeuwse en 18de-eeuwse leraren en werken over doopsgezinde literatoren en kunstenaars. Daarnaast is er een rijke prentencollectie. In de handschriftencollectie zijn er 16de-eeuwse tractaten van David Joris, de enige overgebleven brief van Menno Simons en 18de- tot 20de-eeuwse preken en collegedictaten. Ten slotte bevat de collectie het Doopsgezind Documentatiecentrum.

This collection contains the library of the Mennonite community in Amsterdam, the 'Doopsgezinde Gemeente Amsterdam' (VDGA), which was begun in 1680. From 1735 onwards the library was used for the Mennonite seminary. The core of the collection consists of documents by advocates and opponents of revolutionary Anabaptism, early reformational bibles, theological and polemical texts by leading 17th and 18th century teachers, documents about literary Mennonites and Mennonite artists. Besides this, there is a rich collection of prints. Finally, manuscripts were collected, for instance of the 16th century David Joris, of 18th to 20th Century lecture notes and the only letter that was left of Menno Simons. The Mennonite Documentation Centre is also included in his collection.

De collectie Vondeliana van rasverzamelaar A.Th. Hartkamp (1848-1924) vormde de basis van het in 1901 opgerichte Vondel-Museum. De collectie bestaat uit handschriften, gedrukte werken, schilderijen, prenten, portretten, penningen en documentatie over Vondel.

A collection connected to the Dutch writer and poet Joost van den Vondel, put together by A.Th. Hartkamp (1848-1924). It formed the basis of the Vondel-Museum which was founded in 1901. The collection consists of manuscripts, books, paintings, prints, portraits and medallions as well as other documentary material about Vondel.

De collectie Vondeliana van J.H.W. Unger (1861-1904) bestaat voornamelijk uit zeventiende-eeuwse drukken, aangeschaft in 1908 door de Vereniging Het Vondel-Museum.

This collection of books by the Dutch writer and poet Joost van den Vondel was collected by the archivist J.H.W. Unger (1861-1904) and consists mainly of seventeenth century editions. They were purchased by the society 'The Vondel-Museum' in 1908 when Unger's collection was auctioned.

De collectie bestaat uit boeken, fotoalbums en parafernalia. Zij zijn verzameld door Gerardus Frederik Westerman (1807-1890), boekhandelaar/uitgever en directeur en mede-oprichter van het Zoölogisch Genootschap 'Natura Artis Magistra'. De bibliotheek bestaat uit twee delen: het eerste deel (de collectie Westerman 1856) werd in 1857 door Westerman verkocht aan het Genootschap 'Natura Artis Magistra'. Het tweede deel (de collectie Westerman 1890) werd door de erfgenamen na Westermans dood in 1890 aan het Genootschap gelegateerd. De totale bibliotheek omvat boeken op het gebied van de zoölogie van 1631 tot 1888. Hierbij zijn werken van beroemde biologen zoals Petrus Camper en Willem Vrolik.

This collection of books, photographs and paraphernalia was compiled by Gerardus Frederik Westerman (1807-1890). The bookseller and editor Westerman was joint founder and director of the Zoölogisch Genootschap 'Natura Artis Magistra'. This society, the predecessor of the present Artis Zoo in Amsterdam, aimed to stimulate the knowledge of natural history. Therefore not only a zoo and a museum with inanimate specimens was created, but also a library. The library consists of two parts generally referred to as the collection Westerman 1856 and the collection Westerman 1890. The first part was sold by Westerman in 1857 to the society 'Natura Artis Magistra'. The collection Westerman 1890 was bequeathed to the society after his death. Together they contain books in the field of zoology ranging from 1631 to 1888, including works by famous biologists such as Petrus Camper en Willem Vrolik.
