De Amsterdamsche Studenten Bond, een gezelligheidsvereniging, werd in 1885 opgericht als alternatief voor het Amsterdamsch Studenten Corps (A.S.C.). Dat stond als elitair en duur te boek. Net als het A.S.C. kende de A.S.B. subverenigingen en disputen. De algemene teruggang in de belangstelling voor gezelligheidsverenigingen betekende voor de A.S.B. in 1901 het einde. Het archief is onvolledig. Het bevat veel financiële stukken maar geen correspondentie; notulen van het collegium (bestuur) zijn er slechts van één studiejaar. Daarnaast zijn er een serie almanakken en een periodiek, beide uitgaven van de A.S.B.

The Amsterdamsche Studenten Bond (Amsterdam student association), a student union mainly focusing on companionship, was founded in 1885 as an alternative choice to the Amsterdamsche Studenten Corps (Amsterdam student union), which was known to be elitist and expensive. Just like the ASC the Amsterdamsche Studenten Bond incorporated debating societies and minor student unions. The general decrease of interest in student unions focusing on companionship meant an end to its existence in 1901. The archive is incomplete. It contains a lot of financial documents, but no correspondence. There is only one year of minutes of the board. Besides this, there is a series of almanacs and a periodical, both of which were published by the Amsterdamsche Studenten Bond.

De Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana herbergt de verzameling joodse boeken van de Bijzondere Collecties. De basis voor de bibliotheek werd gelegd door Leeser Rosenthal (Nasielsk 1794 - Hannover 1868), die bij zijn dood een collectie naliet van zo'n 6.000 banden. In de jaren na zijn dood hebben zijn erven tevergeefs getracht de collectie te verkopen. Uiteindelijk heeft de familie de bibliotheek in 1880 aan de gemeente Amsterdam geschonken. Tot de Eerste Wereldoorlog werd de uitbreiding van de bibliotheek gefinancierd uit fondsen die door de familie ter beschikking werden gesteld; daarna nam de Universiteitsbibliotheek de kosten op zich. Eenmaal in Amsterdam ontwikkelde de collectie zich van een Duitse Verlichtingsbibliotheek tot een algemene bibliotheek over de joodse geschiedenis en cultuur, met werken in alle talen waarvan joden zich in de loop der eeuwen hebben bediend. De bibliotheek omvat inmiddels ongeveer 100.000 werken. In de loop van de 130 jaar die de bibliotheek zich in de Universiteitsbibliotheek van Amsterdam bevindt, is de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse Jodendom het belangrijkste zwaartepunt geworden.

The Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana houses the Special Collections Department's Jewish book collection. The basis of the library was formed by the collection of Leeser Rosenthal (Nasielsk 1794 - Hanover 1868), which amounted to 6,000 volumes at the time of his death. In the years following his death, his heirs tried – unsuccessfully – to sell the collection. The family finally bequeathed the library to the City of Amsterdam in 1880. Up until the First World War, the library was expanded on the basis of funds made available by the family; after this time the University bore the costs itself. From being a library of German enlightenment, once it arrived in Amsterdam the Rosenthaliana developed into a general library of Jewish history and culture, with works in every language used by Jews throughout the centuries. By now the library contains around 100,000 works. In the 130 years that the library has been in Amsterdam, its main focus has become the history of Dutch Jewry.

De Stichting Collectieve Propaganda van het Nederlandse Boek (CPNB) is opgericht door de branche-organisaties van boekverkopers en uitgevers, en heeft tot doel het lezen van boeken en het boekenbezit te stimuleren. De collectie bevat promotiemateriaal dat ter ondersteuning van diverse landelijke campagnes is verspreid. De collectie biedt een overzicht van de collectieve boekpromotie in Nederland, vanaf de start in de jaren dertig van de twintigste eeuw.

In 1983 the 'Stichting Collectieve Propaganda van het Nederlandse Boek', an institution promoting the Dutch book, was established by sector organizations of book sellers and book publishers. The institution aims to stimulate the reading and possession of books in general. The collection contains promotional material that was circulated in support of a range of national campaigns. It offers an overview of collective book promotion in the Netherlands from the start of the nineteen thirties.

De collectie I.H. van Eeghen bestaat uit door haar verzamelde boeken en enkele tijdschriften, affiches en handschriften. De verzameling bevat voornamelijk boeken over theologie en christelijke ethiek (Jan Bunyan), pedagogiek (Comenius), geschiedenis en kunst (Jan Luyken), kinderboeken en kinderbijbels, muziek en poëzie. Isabella Henriëtte van Eeghen (1913-1996) was historicus en archivaris en deed voornamelijk onderzoek naar de geschiedenis van Amsterdam.

The collection I.H. van Eeghen consists of her collected books and some periodicals, posters and manuscripts. The collection contains mainly books on theology and Christian ethics (John Bunyan), pedagogics (Comenius), history and art (Jan Luyken), children's books and children's Bibles, music and poetry. Isabella Henriëtte van Eeghen (1913-1996) was a historian and archivist and has mainly researched the history of Amsterdam.

De collectie C. van Emde Boas bevat boeken, tijdschriften en andere publicaties op het gebied van de seksuologie en aanverwante wetenschappen.

De collectie bestaat uit de schenking van een groot aantal stripalbums uit de collectie van P. Hans Frankfurther aan het Stripdocumentatiecentrum Nederland, dat mede door hem werd opgericht. Het Koninklijk Nederlands Aardrijkskundig Genootschap (KNAG) zette zich vanaf 1873 in om de belangstelling in en de kennis van de aardrijkskunde te vergroten. Hiertoe werden enkele verzamelingen aangelegd, waaronder een bibliotheek en een collectie kaarten en atlassen. Beide werden in 1880 in beheer gegeven aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. De collectie beslaat in principe het gehele terrein van de geografie en cartografie. Het accent ligt op Nederland en de (voormalige) overzeese gebiedsdelen. Onder de kaarten zijn vele hoogtepunten uit de geschiedenis van de cartografie vanaf de zestiende eeuw.

From 1873 onwards the Royal Dutch Geographical Society (KNAG) dedicated itself to promoting the interest in and the knowledge of geography. In order to do this, a number of collections were started, including a library and a collection of maps and atlases. In 1880 both were given to the University of Amsterdam to manage. The collection essentially covers the entire scope of geography and map-making. The emphasis is on the Netherlands and (former) overseas territories. The collection of maps contains many highlights in the history of map-making from the sixteenth century onwards.

De boekerij van het Wiskundig Genootschap, dat in 1778 is opgericht. Het genootschap heeft tot doel de beoefening van de wiskunde te bevorderen onder meer door het in stand houden van een boekerij. Deze boekerij bevat ook handschriften uit de zeventiende, achttiende en negentiende eeuw.

The society aims to promote the practice of mathematics through several means, one of which is maintaining a library. The collection also contains manuscripts from the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

De Koninklijke Nederlandsche Maatschappij tot bevordering der Geneeskunst (KNMG) is de beroepsvereniging van Nederlandse artsen. Van meet af aan werd er door bestuur en leden aandacht besteed aan de geschiedenis van de geneeskunst in de Nederlanden. Daartoe werd een grote verzameling historisch materiaal aangelegd, waarvan de uitgebreide bibliotheek het belangrijkste onderdeel is. Er werd verzameld volgens de volgende criteria: uitgaven op het terrein van de geneeskunst en haar hulpwetenschappen, geschreven door een Nederlander en/of gepubliceerd binnen de huidige grenzen van Nederland en de voormalige overzeese gebiedsdelen. Als zodanig is de collectie nagenoeg volledig. Met name onder de uitgaven uit de 15e-18e eeuw zijn vele hoogtepunten, vanuit zowel medisch-historisch als boekhistorisch oogpunt. Op haar verzamelterrein behoort de bibliotheek van de KNMG tot de belangrijkste ter wereld.

The Koninklijke Nederlandsche Maatschappij tot bevordering der Geneeskunst (Royal Dutch Society for advancement of Medicine) is the trade union of the Dutch physicians. From the beginning onwards both board and members highly valued the history of medicine in the Netherlands. Therefore, a large collection of historical material was built, of which the extensive library was the most important part. The material was collected according to the following criteria. In the first place, it had to be published in the field of medicine and its auxiliary sciences. In addition, it had to be written by a Dutchman and/or published within the present boundaries of the Netherlands and overseas territories. As such, the collection is practically complete. It contains many highlights, in particular among the fifteenth to eighteenth century publications. The value of these is large, not only from a medical historical point of view, but also from a book historical point of view. Within the field of medicine the library of the KNMG is one of the most important in the world.

In 1881 werd de Vereniging tegen de Kwakzalverij (VtdK) opgericht. De vereniging keerde zich van begin af aan tegen iedere behandeling van ziekten en aandoeningen die niet op wetenschappelijke uitgangspunten was gebaseerd. De collectie bestaat uit verschillende soorten verzameld drukwerk met betrekking tot alternatieve geneeswijzen en niet-wetenschappelijke middelen waartegen de Vereniging zich verzet.

The Vereniging tegen de Kwakzalverij (VtdK, association against quackery) was founded in 1881. From the start, the society opposed any treatment of illnesses and disorders that was not based on scientific principles. The collection includes a range of printed documents dealing with alternative medical treatments and unscientific remedies opposed by the society.

De collectie E.J. Labarre (1883-1965), papierhistoricus en redacteur van de serie Monumenta Chartae Papyraceae Historiam Illustrantia, bestaat uit een internationaal georiënteerde verzameling boeken, tijdschriften, brochures en documentatie over de geschiedenis van het papier, de papierproductie en watermerken. Daarnaast bevat de collectie een aantal papiermonsters.

The collection brought together by E.J. Labarre (1883-1965), paper historian and series editor of Monumenta Chartae Papyraceae Historiam Illustrantia, is international in scope and comprises books, periodicals, brochures and documentation on the history of paper, paper production and watermarks. The collection also includes a number of paper specimens.

Het Nederlandsch Schoolmuseum startte in 1877 met als doel nieuwe leer- en hulpmiddelen voor het onderwijs te verzamelen en beschikbaar te stellen. De collectie telt 98.000 banden uit de periode 1600-2000, waarvan 12.000 uit de negentiende eeuw. Zo'n veertig procent van het geheel bestaat uit schoolboeken voor lager en middelbaar onderwijs, vooral Nederlandse drukken. Alle schoolvakken zijn vertegenwoordigd, meestal met opeenvolgende drukken. Ook zijn er boeken te vinden over pedagogiek, psychologie en didactiek. Verder zijn er kinderboeken, (wand)platen en tijdschriften. Het schoolboek is een stille getuige van kennis, beelden, begrippen, ideeën, waarden en normen die in een bepaalde periode een rol spelen. Deze collectie bestrijkt een lange, aaneengesloten periode en dekt alle schoolvakken. Daarom is ze van grote cultuurhistorische waarde en onmisbaar voor onderzoek naar de geschiedenis van onderwijs en opvoeding.

The 'Nederlandsch Schoolmuseum' (Dutch Schoolmuseum) opened in 1877 with the aim to collect new educational tools. The collection now consists of 98,000 books dating from 1600-2000, 12,000 of which were published in the 19th century and 175 in the 17th and 18th centuries. About 40% of the collection consists of Dutch textbooks for primary and secondary education. All school subjects are covered, often with consecutive editions. Besides this, there are books on pedagogy, psychology and didactics. There are also about 7000 children's books, wall charts and many periodicals. Textbooks are the silent witnesses of knowledge, images, concepts, opinions and standards that were predominant in the past. This collection covers a long and continuous period and all school subjects. As such, the collection is of major importance to understand history and culture in the Netherlands and indispensable for research into the history of education and teaching.

Het door Kees Nieuwenhuijzen overgedragen archief bestaat voornamelijk uit grafische eindproducten: boeken, tijdschriften, affiches, losse omslagen, en efemeer drukwerk als onderdeel van huisstijlen. Verder is er een kleine collectie zetinstructies en werktekeningen, waaronder het ontwerp voor de gevelbelettering van woongebouw Batavia in Amsterdam uit 2001.

Het Nutsseminarium voor Pedagogiek werd in 1919 opgericht door de Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen om wetenschappelijk onderzoek te doen naar het lager en middelbaar onderwijs in Nederland. Een andere doelstelling was leraren op te leiden voor het middelbaar onderwijs. De bibliotheek van het Nutsseminarium werd gevormd tussen 1919 en 1926. In 1926 werd de collectie – zo'n 3000 boeken en een beperkt aantal tijdschriften – overgebracht naar de Universiteitsbibliotheek. Er is literatuur te vinden over opvoedkunde, schoolwezen en de geschiedenis ervan, schoolorganisatie en vooral didactiek en psychologie. De boeken zijn merendeels van na 1910 en zijn voornamelijk gericht op het lager onderwijs. Ook vreemdtalige publicaties zijn goed vertegenwoordigd.

The institution also aimed to train teachers for secondary education. The library of the institution was formed between 1919 and 1926 and consists of approximately 3000 books and several journals. In 1926 the collection was moved to the University Library. The library covers pedagogy and the educational system and its history and organization, in particular didactics and psychology. Most books focus on primary education. A fair number of publications is in a foreign language.

Olidin was een stripblad uitgegeven door oliemaatschappij Shell (Shell Junior Club) en vormgegeven door reclamebureau Van Maanen in Den Haag. Het bevatte behalve werk van Nederlandse en buitenlandse stripmakers ook verhalen, puzzels en advertenties. In de collectie bevinden zich originele tekeningen en drukproeven van de stripverhalen.

Olidin was a comics magazine published by oil company Shell (Shell Junior Club) and designed by the advertising agency Van Maanen in The Hague. Besides work by Dutch and foreign comics' writers, it also contained stories, puzzles and advertisements. The collection contains the original drawings and galley proofs of the comics.

Bibliotheek van de Pharmaceutische Studenten-Vereeniging Luctor et Emergo, in 1902 overgenomen en vervolgens uitgebreid door de Koninklijke Nederlandse Maatschappij ter bevordering der Pharmacie (KNMP). De bibliotheek bevat boeken, tijdschriften en enkele handschriften betreffende de farmacie en aanverwante vakken, voornamelijk uit de negentiende eeuw.

The 'Algemeene Pharmaceutische Bibliotheek' – the general pharmaceutical library - was formed by the student union 'Luctor at Emergo'. In 1902 it was taken over and extended by the KNMP, the Royal Dutch Society for the Promotion of Pharmacy. The library contains books, periodicals and several manuscripts about pharmacy and related fields. The collection dates mainly from the 19th century.

De (internationale) Philhelleensche Vereeniging werd in 1888 te Amsterdam opgericht met het doel de studie en verbreiding van de Griekse taal en literatuur. Daartoe werd een bibliotheek ingericht. De collectie bestaat uit algemene, historische, taalkundige en literaire werken in het Nieuwgrieks en uit taalkundige werken in andere talen over het klassieke en het moderne Grieks en uit geschiedkundige publicaties over Griekenland en de Griekse literatuur.

The (international) 'Philhelleensche Vereeniging' was established in 1888 in Amsterdam with the aim to study and propagate Greek language and literature. For that reason a library was set up. The collection consists of general, historical, linguistic and literary publications in modern Greek and linguistic works in other languages about classical and modern Greek. Besides this, there are historical publications about Greece and Greek literature.

Izaak Rafalowicz werd in 1899 in Polen geboren. Omdat het antisemitisme daar toenam, vertrok hij in 1918 naar Nederland. In Amsterdam was Rafalowicz in 1921 betrokken bij de oprichting van de Oost-joodse Cultuurvereniging Sch. An-Ski (1921-1979) waarvan hij vanaf 1945 voorzitter was. Daarnaast was hij lid van de Joodse Coördinatie Commissie (JCC, 1945-1948), die zich inzette voor de wederopbouw van de joodse gemeenschap na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Hij was tevens actief voor de Organisation for Rehabilitation and Training (ORT), zowel voor de internationale organisatie als voor de Nederlandse tak daarvan. De ORT zet zich in voor onderwijs aan de joodse bevolking. In de collectie bevinden zich archivalia van de JCC en van de Stichting ORT-Holland, alsmede publicaties en stukken betreffende internationale congressen van de ORT.

Izaak Rafalowicz was born in Poland in 1899. He moved to the Netherlands in 1918 to escape the rising anti-Semitism in his own country. In Amsterdam, Rafalowicz was involved in the founding of the Eastern Jewish Workers Cultural Society Sch. An-Ski in 1921, of which he was the president from 1945 onwards. At the same time, he was a member of the Jewish Coordination Committee (JCC, 1945-1948), which worked to rebuild the Jewish community after World War II. Rafalowicz was also an active member of the Organisation for Rehabilitation and Training (ORT), working for the international organisation as well as the Dutch branch. The ORT is dedicated to providing education for the Jewish population. The collection contains archival items from the JCC and the ORT Holland Foundation as well as publications and documents dealing with the international ORT congresses.

Jurist, letterkundige en publicist op het gebied van de volksverlichting. Betreft zowel brieven die Robidé van der Aa ontving als redacteur van diverse almanakken en tijdschriften – waaronder de Almanak voor het schone en goede en De Volksbode – en brieven met genealogische gegevens die hij gebruikte voor de publicatie van Oud-Nederland in ... burgen en kasteelen geschetst als brieven van meer persoonlijke aard. Biedt inzicht in het letterkundig en maatschappelijk leven in de eerst helft van de negentiende eeuw en vormt een bron voor genealogisch onderzoek naar de Nederlandse ridderschap.

Robidé was a lawyer, a man of letters and a publisher of material in the field of popular enlightenment. The collection consists of letters which Robidé received from various magazines and almanacs as an editor – among others the Almanak voor het schone en goede, an almanac for all things beautiful and good and De Volksbode, a newspaper – as well as letters with genealogical information which he used for the publication of his book Oud-Nederland in ... burgen en kasteelen geschetst, about fortresses and castles in the Netherlands. Besides this, the collection includes letters that were more personal in nature. The collection gives a good insight into the literary and social life of the first half of the 19th century. It is also a source of information for research into the genealogy of the Dutch chivalry.

Een door de uitgever J.R.A. Schouten verzamelde collectie van 670 boeken en tijdschriften betreffende fotografische procédés, fotoapparatuur, inrichting van een fotografisch atelier en dergelijke. Verder tentoonstellingscatalogi, brochures en reclamemateriaal van leveranciers van fotoapparatuur.

The collection was brought together by the publisher J.R.A. Schouten.

Skript Historisch Tijdschrift is een onafhankelijk historisch-wetenschappelijk tijdschrift dat elk kwartaal verschijnt en artikelen van studenten, interviews met bekende historici en recensies publiceert. De redactie van het tijdschrift bestaat volledig uit studenten en pas-afgestudeerden. Skript werd in 1979 opgericht door studenten van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Dit archief bevat documenten die voortkwamen uit de activiteiten van de redactie, zoals vergadernotulen, correspondentie, enige toegestuurde kopij, handleidingen, promotiemateriaal en stukken ter voorbereiding van lezingen en symposia, die met enige regelmaat georganiseerd werden. Deze documenten bieden een interessante blik op de organisatie van een klein redactieteam. Het archief laat zien hoe het onderwijs en onderzoek aan Nederlandse universiteiten studenten inspireerden in hun werk.

De collectie van de Studievereniging voor Psychical Research bevat hoofdzakelijk publicaties op het gebied van parapsychologie, spiritisme en astrologie. Met uitzondering van de tijdschriften dateert de collectie van na 1945.

Unitas Studiosorum Amstelodamensium werd in 1911 opgericht. Deze studentengezelligheidsvereniging beschouwde zich als de opvolger van de Amsterdamsche Studenten Bond (A.S.B.), die in 1901 ophield te bestaan. Omdat men er geen fysieke ontgroening kende, gold U.S.A. als een moderne vereniging. U.S.A. had een gemengd karakter, een lage contributie en een informele sfeer. Na een bloeitijd vanaf 1925 ging het na 1967 snel bergafwaarts. In 1976 was er een succesvolle doorstart. Het archief is onvolledig. Uit de periode 1950-1967 ontbreekt veel. Naast de gebruikelijke correspondentie met zuster- en andere verenigingen, eigen leden, leveranciers, universiteit en gemeente zijn er financiële stukken, merendeels uit de periode 1930-1940. Interessant – hoewel incompleet – zijn de notulen van senaatsvergaderingen en algemene vergaderingen. Daarnaast zijn er foto's, almanakken en periodieken.

Unitas Studiosorum Amstelodamensium was founded in 1911. This student union focused mainly on companionship and considered itself the successor of the Amsterdamsche Studenten Bond, the Amsterdam student association, which ceased to exist in 1901. Since there was no physical rag day Unitas Studiosorum Amstelodamensium is considered to be a modern student union. USA had mixed characteristics, a low membership fee and an informal atmosphere. After flourishing from 1925 onwards it lost its appeal after 1967. It started up again with success in 1976. Unfortunately, the collection is rather incomplete. Much is missing, in particular from the period 1950-1967. In addition to the usual correspondence with other student unions, with their own members, suppliers, the university and the municipality, there are financial documents, mostly from the period 1930-1940. Quite interesting, although incomplete, are the minutes of the meetings of the senate and of other meetings. The collection also contains photographs, almanacs and periodicals.

Het archief van Albert Verwey (1865-1937) bestaat uit de literaire en wetenschappelijke nalatenschap van de schrijver, criticus en literatuurhistoricus Albert Verwey. Naast manuscripten, documentatie, boeken en overdrukken bevat het een uitzonderlijke hoeveelheid ingekomen brieven en afschriften van verzonden brieven. Voorts is documentatie- en beeldmateriaal aanwezig. Het archief is onmisbaar voor de bestudering van leven en werk van Albert Verwey en biedt inzicht in het literaire en geestelijke klimaat van zijn generatie.

The archive of Albert Verwey (1865-1937) contains literary and scholarly papers of the writer of prose, poetry and drama, the critic of literature and the Leiden professor of literature Albert Verwey. Together with many manuscripts, books and off-prints of many articles and sections with documentary and iconographical materials, the Archive of Albert Verwey includes circa 20.000 letters to Verwey as well as circa 10.000 letters from his hand. The substantial importance of the collection for teaching and research in many fields can be enlarged by including the Verwey materials of a number of other collections at the Allard Pierson, such as the collections of his children Mea and Floris Verwey, of his brothers-in-law Frederik van Eeden and Willem Witsen, as well as Verwey collections brought together by others.
