De Amsterdamse schrijver Isaäc da Costa (1798-1860), een jood, liet zich in 1822 dopen tot christen. In 1823 publiceerde Da Costa het pamflet Bezwaren tegen den geest der eeuw, waarin hij zich tegen de ideeën van de Verlichting uitsprak. Met dit pamflet werd hij een van de meest uitgesproken vertegenwoordigers van het Réveil, een beweging binnen het protestantisme waarin de persoonlijke beleving van het geloof vooropstond. De collectie bevat in de eerste plaats de omvangrijke correspondentie van Da Costa met andere figuren van het Réveil, onder wie Willem de Clercq. Da Costa's teksten van voordrachten over vaderlandse geschiedenis en de Bijbel geven inzicht in de denkwereld van het Réveil. In de collectie is ook materiaal te vinden dat betrekking heeft op Da Costa's vrouw, Hanna Belmonte, en op de kinderen Da Costa, vooral Abraham, Francisca en Rebecca.

The Amsterdam author Isaäc da Costa (1798-1860), a Jew, was baptized a Christian in 1822. In 1823 Da Costa published Bezwaren tegen den geest der eeuw ('Objections against the spirit of the century'), in which he argued against the principles of the Enlightenment. With this pamphlet he became the most explicit representative of the Réveil, a Protestant movement stressing the personal element of belief. The collection consists of, in the first place, the extensive correspondence of Da Costa with other individuals of the Réveil, such as Willem de Clercq. There are also lectures on national history and the Bible by Da Costa, which offer insight into the mentality and way of thinking of Réveil adherents. Besides this, the collection contains documents about Da Costa's wife, Hanna Belmonte, and about the Da Costa children, especially Abraham, Francisca and Rebecca.

Arnon Grunberg (1971) debuteerde in 1994 met de roman Blauwe maandagen. In twintig jaar schreef hij een indrukwekkend oeuvre bijeen, bestaande uit romans, verhalen, essays en journalistiek werk, en ontwikkelde hij zich tot Nederlands meest spraakmakende romancier, essayist en columnist. Zijn 'levend archief' zal periodiek worden aangevuld. Het omvat manuscripten, typoscripten, boeken, kranten en tijdschriften, correspondentie, reisdocumenten, knipsels, audiovisueel materiaal, agenda's en administratie. Het archief toont de ontwikkeling van het indrukwekkende oeuvre van een schrijver en van zijn imago.

Arnon Grunberg (1971) debuted in 1994 with the novel Blauwe maandagen (translated into English as Blue Mondays). In the space of twenty years he has created an impressive oeuvre, ranging from novels, stories and essays to journalistic work. He has grown into the Netherlands’s most influential novelist, essayist and columnist. His 'living archive' will be supplemented from time to time and comprises manuscripts, typescripts, books, newspapers and magazines, correspondence, travel documents, clippings, audio-visual materials, appointment diaries and admin. The archive reflects the growth of a writer’s impressive oeuvre and his public image.

Alex Gutteling (1884-1910) was een Nederlands dichter en criticus uit de kring rond het tijdschrift De Beweging. Zijn archief bestaat uit persoonlijke stukken en correspondentie, alsmede de teksten van zijn poëzie en proza in opeenvolgende ontwikkelingsstadia. Daarnaast bevat het een aantal manuscripten en overdrukken van werken van W.L. Penning jr. en Albert Verwey.

Alex Gutteling (1884-1910) was a Dutch poet and critic who belonged to the circle around the journal De Beweging. His archive consists of personal items and correspondence, as well as versions of his poetry and prose in successive stages of completion. The archive also includes a number of manuscripts and offprints of works by the poets Wilhelm Levinus Penning and Albert Verwey.

Het archief van Jacob Israël de Haan bevat correspondentie, persoonlijke aantekeningen, publicaties, collegedictaten, gedichten, foto's en enkele onuitgegeven gedichten van deze joodse schrijver, dichter, journalist en jurist. De Haan werd niet alleen bekend door zijn publicaties, maar ook door zijn betrokkenheid bij zowel het zionisme als de joodse orthodoxie. Hij werd in 1924 in Jeruzalem vermoord. Het archief bestaat uit materiaal dat Jacob Israël de Haan tijdens zijn leven zelf schonk aan de Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana en uit zijn persoonlijke nalatenschap. Ook bevat het archief een aantal aanvullingen van later datum die onder andere te maken hebben met de zorg voor het archief. Het materiaal dateert voornamelijk uit de periode 1904-1924 en is van groot belang omdat het een afspiegeling vormt van het veelzijdige karakter en van de vele bezigheden van De Haan.

The archive of Jacob Israël de Haan contains material from this Jewish writer, poet, journalist and lawyer. In addition to his publications, De Haan was known for his involvement in both Zionism and Jewish orthodoxy. He was murdered in Jerusalem 1924. The archive comprises material that De Haan donated to the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana during his lifetime, as well as items from his personal estate. It also contains several later additions, relating to such matters as the care of the archive. Most of the archive material dates from the period 1904-1924 and is of immense significance, in that it reflects De Haan's versatility and many pursuits. The archive contains correspondence, personal notes, publications, lecture notes, poems and photos, including a few poems that have never been published.

De collectie Jac. van Hattum bestaat in hoofdzaak uit manuscripten en typoscripten van de schrijver Jacob van Hattum (1900-1981) die gebruikt zijn voor de samenstelling van zijn verzameld werk. Daarnaast bevat de collectie een bescheiden aantal archiefstukken. De collectie is in bruikleen gegeven door Ger Kleis.

The Jac. van Hattum collection largely consist of manuscripts and typoscripts by the writer Jacob van Hattum (1900-1981), which were used to prepare the collected edition of his work. The collection also includes a modest number of archival items. The collection was given in loan by Ger Kleis.

Carel Jacob (Karel) Hildesheim (1875-1931) vertaalde verhalen en poëzie uit het Jiddisch. In 1926 werd de vertaling die hij maakte van 'Joodsche volksverhalen' van J.L. Perets (1851-1915) uitgegeven bij de Wereldbibliotheek. Het archief bestaat uit zijn manuscripten van vertalingen in het Nederlands. Het merendeel betreft vertalingen van het werk van J.L. Perets (1851-1915), waaronder 'Joodse volksverhalen'. Verder zijn er onder andere vertalingen van werk van Salomon An-Ski (1863-1920), S.G. Frug (1860-1916), Morris Rosenfeld (1862-1923), Sholem Asch (1880-1957), Chaim Nachman Bialik (1873-1934), Sholem Aleichem (1859-1916) en Fritz Löhner-Beda (1883-1942).

Carel Jacob Hildesheim (1875-1931) translated stories and poetry from Yiddish. His translation of Jewish Folktales by J.L. Perets (1851-1915) was published by De Wereldbibliotheek in 1926. The archive of Carel Jacob Hildesheim features manuscripts of his translations into Dutch. The majority of these manuscripts are translations of the work of J.L. Perets. Other translations include works by Salomon An-Ski (1863-1920), S.G. Frug (1860-1916), Morris Rosenfeld (1862-1923), Sholem Asch (1880-1957), Chaim Nachman Bialik (1873-1934), Sholem Aleichem (1859-1916) and Fritz Löhner-Beda (1883-1942).

De Hongaarse journalist en schrijver Andreas Latzko emigreerde omstreeks 1931 naar Nederland. Hij verwierf internationaal bekendheid met zijn antimilitaristische bundel Menschen im Krieg (1917), die een jaar later in Engelse vertaling verscheen. De collectie bevat manuscripten voor literair werk, correspondentie en documentatie over leven en werk. Deze nalatenschap maakt onder meer onderzoek mogelijk naar de ontstaansgeschiedenis en de receptie van Latzko's werk, en biedt daarnaast inzicht in zijn relaties met andere (emigranten)schrijvers, onder wie Stefan Zweig en Heinrich Mann.

The Hungarian journalist and writer Andreas Latzko immigrated to the Netherlands around 1931, where he lived until his natural death in 1941. He achieved international fame with his antimilitarist volume Menschen im Krieg, which was published in 1917 and appeared in English in 1918 as Men in war. The collection contains manuscripts of his literary work and correspondence and documentation about his life and work. Among the correspondents are Stefan Zweig and Heinrich Mann. This legacy enables research into the development and reception of Latzko's publications.

Mea Nijland-Verwey (1892-1978) was dichter, letterkundige en uitgeefster. Het archief bestaat uit persoonlijke stukken en manuscripten van haar eigen werk, stukken betreffende het beheer van de literaire nalatenschap van haar vader Albert Verwey en de administratie van uitgeverij C.A. Mees, met redactiedossiers en uitgeverscorrespondentie.

Mea Nijland-Verwey (1892-1978) was a poet, woman of letters and publisher. The archive consists of personal documents and manuscripts of her work, documents relating to the management of the literary estate of her father Albert Verwey and the accounts of C.A. Mees publishers, including editorial files and publisher’s correspondence.

Het archief behelst de handschriftelijke nalatenschap van Everardus Johannes Potgieter (1808–1875), voornamelijk bestaande uit correspondentie. Ten dele betreft het materiaal dat in relatie staat tot zijn redacteurschap van het tijdschrift De Gids. Naast brieven omvat het archief manuscripten van deels onuitgegeven letterkundig werk, dagboekfragmenten, aantekeningen, drukproeven en realia. Ook van andere letterkundigen zijn manuscripten in de collectie te vinden.

The archive contains the manuscript legacy of Everardus Johannes Potgieter (1808–1875) which mainly consists of correspondence. It partly concerns material relating to his editorship of the literary periodical De Gids. In addition to letters, the archive also includes manuscripts of partly unpublished literary work, diary fragments, notes, proof sheets and objects. Manuscripts by other literary figures are also to be found in the collection.

De bibliotheek van de negentiende-eeuwse dichter E.J. Potgieter, geschonken in 1875, bevat werken op het gebied van binnen- en buitenlandse taal- en letterkunde en (kunst- en cultuur)geschiedenis.

The library of the nineteenth century poet E.J. Potgieter, donated to the University library in 1875. It consists of publications in the field of foreign and Dutch language and literature and (art) history.

In 1921 werd door een aantal Oost-Europese joodse immigranten in Amsterdam de Oost-Joodse Arbeiders Cultuurvereniging Sch. An-Ski opgericht. De vereniging streefde naar het 'beleven' van de Jiddische taal en cultuur. Naast het oprichten van een Jiddische bibliotheek werd ook een schooltje opgericht voor Jiddische les aan kinderen en konden verenigingsleden deelnemen aan een toneelgroep en een koor. Daarnaast werden lezingen georganiseerd. Tijdens de Bezetting ging de bibliotheek van de vereniging verloren. Met steun van andere organisaties werd de bibliotheek daarna weer opgebouwd. Toen het ledental in 1953 zozeer was teruggelopen dat het eigen verenigingsgebouw moest worden opgegeven, werd de bibliotheek naar de Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana overgebracht.

In 1921 a group of Eastern-European Jewish immigrants established the Eastern Jewish Workers Cultural Society Sch. An-ski. The society encouraged the 'experience' of Yiddish language and culture. Besides setting up a Yiddish library, a school was opened to teach children Yiddish and society members could join a drama group and a choir and attend lectures. The society's library was lost during the German Occupation but after the war it was rebuilt with support from other organisations. In 1953, when membership had declined to such an extent that the society building had to be relinquished, the library was transferred to the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana.

De papieren nalatenschap van Jan Stals (1892-1969) bestaat grotendeels uit ongepubliceerde manuscripten van Franse gedichten en vertalingen van toneel en poëzie in het Frans; daarnaast documentatie in de vorm van knipsels, onder meer met betrekking tot de Vondel-receptie in Frankrijk. Verder enkele manuscripten en verwante egodocumenten, en documentatie met betrekking tot de door Jan Stals gemaakte Franse Vondelvertalingen.

The documentary legacy of Jan Stals (1892-1969) consists mainly of unpublished manuscripts of French poetry and translations of French drama and poetry. Besides this, there are documents about the reception of the work of the Dutch writer and poet Joost van den Vondel and several manuscripts, personal papers and documentation about the French Vondel translations made by Jan Stals.

Het archief van Albert Verwey (1865-1937) bestaat uit de literaire en wetenschappelijke nalatenschap van de schrijver, criticus en literatuurhistoricus Albert Verwey. Naast manuscripten, documentatie, boeken en overdrukken bevat het een uitzonderlijke hoeveelheid ingekomen brieven en afschriften van verzonden brieven. Voorts is documentatie- en beeldmateriaal aanwezig. Het archief is onmisbaar voor de bestudering van leven en werk van Albert Verwey en biedt inzicht in het literaire en geestelijke klimaat van zijn generatie.

The archive of Albert Verwey (1865-1937) contains literary and scholarly papers of the writer of prose, poetry and drama, the critic of literature and the Leiden professor of literature Albert Verwey. Together with many manuscripts, books and off-prints of many articles and sections with documentary and iconographical materials, the Archive of Albert Verwey includes circa 20.000 letters to Verwey as well as circa 10.000 letters from his hand. The substantial importance of the collection for teaching and research in many fields can be enlarged by including the Verwey materials of a number of other collections at the Allard Pierson, such as the collections of his children Mea and Floris Verwey, of his brothers-in-law Frederik van Eeden and Willem Witsen, as well as Verwey collections brought together by others.

Het archief van de Nederlandse dichter Arie Visser (1944-1997) bestaat uit diens literaire nalatenschap, voor het grootste deel bestaande uit handschriften, typoscripten, exemplaren van zijn werk en knipsels uit de kranten en tijdschriften waarin hij publiceerde.

De collectie Vondeliana van J.H.W. Unger (1861-1904) bestaat voornamelijk uit zeventiende-eeuwse drukken, aangeschaft in 1908 door de Vereniging Het Vondel-Museum.

This collection of books by the Dutch writer and poet Joost van den Vondel was collected by the archivist J.H.W. Unger (1861-1904) and consists mainly of seventeenth century editions. They were purchased by the society 'The Vondel-Museum' in 1908 when Unger's collection was auctioned.

Gérard Walch (1865-1931) was leraar Frans aan de bekende door R.A. Kollewijn opgerichte driejarige hbs te Amsterdam. Hij is in de eerste plaats bekend door zijn Anthologie des poètes français contemporains waarvan de eerste druk verscheen in 1906. Deze populaire bloemlezing werd een aantal keren uitgebreid en herdrukt, voor het laatst in 1959. De collectie bestaat uit ca. 1500 boeken – vrijwel alle poëziebundels van rond 1900. De meeste zijn voorzien van een eigenhandige opdracht van de auteur aan Walch. Sommige van die auteurs werden later wereldberoemd, zoals Jean Cocteau en Marinetti. De collectie als zodanig geeft een beeld van de bibliotheek van een erudiete en geleerde kenner van de Franse letterkunde, de collectie autografen maakt hem uniek in Nederland.

Gérard Walch (1865-1931) was a teacher of French language and literature at a well-known secondary school in Amsterdam. He is chiefly known by his Anthologie des poètes français contemporains, a popular miscellany of contemporary French poetry, which was first published in 1906. It was extended and republished a few times until 1959. The collection consists of about 1500 books – nearly all of which are volumes of poetry from about 1900. Most of them have an inscription in them, written personally by the author to Walch. Some of these authors later became world-famous, such as Jean Cocteau and Marinetti. The collection gives an impression of a library belonging to an erudite authority on French literature. His collection of books with inscription by the author makes him quite unique in the Netherlands.

De collectie bestaat uit stukken afkomstig van of met betrekking tot de dichter, schrijver, journalist en vertaler Johan Willem Frederik Werumeus Buning (1891-1958). De stukken stammen met name uit zijn Amsterdamse jaren en zijn door hem geschonken aan, dan wel verzameld door, zijn vriendin Miep (Jacomina Jacoba Berendina) van 't Hoff-Kools (1893-1945). Het betreft manuscripten, typoscripten en publicaties van literair werk, artikelen en kookboeken. De collectie bevat verder correspondentie, foto's en opdrachtexemplaren van publicaties. Met latere aanvullingen.

This collection contains material by or about the poet, author, journalist and translator Johan Willem Frederik Werumeus Buning (1891-1958). Most of the material dates from the period he lived in Amsterdam and was given to or collected by his girl-friend, Miep van 't Hoff-Kools. The collection consists of manuscripts, typescripts, literary publications, articles and cookery books. Besides this, there is correspondence, there are photographs and there are copies of dedicated publications. Since the donation of the collection to the Special Collections in 2005, material has been added to the collection.
