Het Réveil was een opwekkingsbeweging binnen het protestantisme tussen 1820 en 1860. De aanhang bestond uit predikanten en leken, overwegend afkomstig uit de gegoede burgerij. De beweging zette zich aanvankelijk sterk af tegen de relativering van het geloof en richtte zich later steeds meer op filantropisch werk. Belangrijke figuren uit de onstuimige beginperiode waren Willem de Clercq en Isaäc da Costa, terwijl Ottho Gerhard Heldring de grote man van de praktijk was. Rond 1860 viel de beweging uiteen, nog voordat onder Abraham Kuyper de kleine luyden het binnen de orthodoxie voor het zeggen kregen. De Stichting Het Réveil-Archief, opgericht in 1930, beoogt bronnen voor de geschiedschrijving van de beweging bijeen te brengen en de bestudering ervan te bevorderen. Het verzamelde materiaal heeft betrekking op enige tientallen aanhangers van de beweging. Het bestaat voor een belangrijk deel uit correspondentie van Réveilfiguren onderling en van Réveilfiguren met derden. Ook bevat de collectie veel egodocumenten, waaronder het omvangrijke dagboek van Willem de Clercq.

The Réveil was a revival movement within Protestantism between 1820 and 1860. Its supporters were to be found among clergymen and laypeople who largely derived from the upper middle classes. Initially the movement reacted strongly against the contemporary critique of faith, while later it increasingly focused on philanthropy. Leading figures from the tempestuous early years were Willem de Clercq and Isaac da Costa, while Ottho Gerhard Heldring was the motor behind the movement’s social work . The movement disintegrated around 1860, even before the ‘kleine luyden’ or lower middle classes gained the upper hand within the orthodoxy under the theologian, later Prime Minister, Abraham Kuyper. Established in 1930, the Stichting Het Réveil-Archief is a foundation that aims to collect sources for the historiography of the movement and promote the study of it. The collected material relates to a few dozen supporters of the movement, and consists for an important part of correspondence between figures of the Réveil movement themselves and with third parties. The collection is also rich in ego documents, including the extensive diary of Willem de Clercq.

Carl August Ferdinand Schwartz (1817-1870) werkte als zendeling onder de joden. Hij deed dat in Boedapest, Constantinopel, Berlijn, Amsterdam en Londen. De collectie bevat naast persoonlijke stukken materiaal dat betrekking heeft op de zending onder joden in Nederland en op de Nederlandsche Vereeniging voor Israël.

Carl August Ferdinand Schwartz (1817-1870) worked as a missionary for converting Jews to Christianity. He carried this out in Budapest, Constantinople, Berlin, Amsterdam and London. Besides personal documents, the collection contains documents relating to his missionary work in the Netherlands and to the Nederlandsche Vereeniging voor Israël (the Dutch Society for Israel).

De collectie heeft betrekking op de nauw met elkaar verweven families Singendonck en Van der Brugghen. De eerste schenking aan de Stichting Het Réveil-Archief betrof de Réveilfiguur Johan Anne Singendonck (1809-1893) maar latere schenkingen en aankopen maakten dat de collectie steeds meer het karakter van een familiearchief kreeg. Het materiaal gaat terug tot de zeventiende eeuw. Naast officiële stukken en brieven bevat de collectie de uit 1663 daterende familiebijbel van de Singendoncks.

The collection concerns the two closely intertwined families Singendonck and Van der Brugghen. The first donation to the Stichting Het Réveil-Archief, the society founded to collect Réveil material, concerned Johan Anne Singendonck (1809-1893), but the donations that followed turned the collection more and more into a family archive. The material dates back as far as the seventeenth century. Besides official documents and letters, the collection contains the Singendonck family bible dating from 1663.

De papieren nalatenschap van Jan Stals (1892-1969) bestaat grotendeels uit ongepubliceerde manuscripten van Franse gedichten en vertalingen van toneel en poëzie in het Frans; daarnaast documentatie in de vorm van knipsels, onder meer met betrekking tot de Vondel-receptie in Frankrijk. Verder enkele manuscripten en verwante egodocumenten, en documentatie met betrekking tot de door Jan Stals gemaakte Franse Vondelvertalingen.

The documentary legacy of Jan Stals (1892-1969) consists mainly of unpublished manuscripts of French poetry and translations of French drama and poetry. Besides this, there are documents about the reception of the work of the Dutch writer and poet Joost van den Vondel and several manuscripts, personal papers and documentation about the French Vondel translations made by Jan Stals.

Het archief van Theo J. Stomps, hoogleraar plantkunde aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam van 1910 tot 1945, bevat correspondentie, stukken over zijn opleiding, aantekeningen van wetenschappelijk onderzoek, materiaal betreffende publicaties en lezingen, eerbewijzen, herinneringen aan buitenlandse studiereizen, stukken over zijn colleges en (buitenlandse) excursies met studenten, alsmede over zijn directeurschap van de Hortus Botanicus. Het geeft inzicht in het werk van een Nederlands botanicus die honderden studenten geneeskunde, farmacie en plant- en dierkunde onderwees en onderzoek deed naar erfelijkheid.

The archive of Theo J. Stomps, full professor at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from 1910 until 1945, contains documents about his education, correspondence, notes of his scientific research, documents concerning publications and lectures, tokens of honour, souvenirs from his travels abroad, documents relating to his lectures for university students, and documents that followed from his directorship of the Hortus Botanicus of the University of Amsterdam. The archive illustrates the work of a Dutch botanist who trained hundreds of students of medicine, pharmacy and biology, and researched the mechanisms of heredity.

Het archief is afkomstig van de bedrijven van G.T.N. Suringar en zijn zoon Hugo, die in Leeuwarden een boekwinkel, een drukkerij/uitgeverij en een veilinghuis dreven. Het archief beslaat de periode 1809-1918. Het archief omvat onder meer circa 7000 brieven van en aan G.T.N. en Hugo Suringar en zeventien registers met uitgaande brieven van de boekhandel en uitgeverij uit de periode 1822-1882. Daarnaast zijn er administratieve stukken met betrekking tot de bedrijfsvoering van de bedrijven van G.T.N. en Hugo Suringar. Een groot aantal manuscripten, drukproeven, uiteindelijke drukken, illustratiemateriaal en prospectussen is overgeleverd van de door vader en zoon Suringar uitgegeven auteurs. Het archief biedt inzicht in de organisatie van een vooraanstaande negentiende-eeuwse, voornamelijk literair getinte boekhandel en uitgeverij, in de relatie met auteurs en collega's, alsmede in het beoogde publiek en de klantenkring in de firma. The archive stems from the companies of G.T.N. Suringar and his son Hugo, who ran a bookshop, a printing and publishing house and an auction house in Leeuwarden. The archive covers the years 1809-1918 and includes some 7,000 letters by and to G.T.N. and Hugo Suringar as well as 17 registers of outgoing letters by the bookshop and publishing house dating from the years 1822-1882. In addition there are clerical documents relating to the running of the firms of G.T.N. and Hugo Suringar. A large number of manuscripts, proofs, finished books, illustration materials and brochures have survived relating to the authors who were published by father and son Suringar. The archive throws light on the organisation of a prominent nineteenth-century, mainly literary, bookshop and publishing house, on the relationship with authors and colleagues as well as the intended audience and the firm’s customers. De Swing Papa’s was een Nederlands amateur-jazzorkest dat actief was in de jaren 1935-1943. Het orkest werd opgericht door drummer Iwan Poustochkine. De band trad regelmatig op in Nederland en enkele keren in het buitenland op jazz-concoursen. De vaste bezetting wisselde in de loop der jaren en er waren vaak invallers of extra leden. Door de Duitse bezetting vanaf 1940 werd het steeds moeilijker om muziek te maken en vanaf 1943 was dit praktisch onmogelijk waardoor het orkest stopte met optreden. Het archief bestaat voornamelijk uit correspondentie uit de periode 1935-1941 die een duidelijk beeld geeft van de activiteiten van het orkest.

Founded by drummer Iwan Poustochkine, the Dutch amateur jazz orchestra The Swing Papa’s was active in the years 1935-1943. The band regularly performed in the Netherlands and occasionally took part in jazz competitions abroad. The regular line-up changed in the course of the years, with the band often taking stand-in musicians or extra members on board. The German occupation in 1940 made it increasingly difficult to play music, becoming all but impossible from 1943, so that the band stopped performing. The archive, which mainly consists of correspondence covering the years 1935-1941, provides a clear illustration of the orchestra’s activities.

Hyman Tobias Tal (1854-1938) verwierf bekendheid en waardering door zijn optredens als baäl tokea (ramshoornblazer) in verschillende synagoges in Amsterdam. Het archief bestaat uit bij Tal ingekomen brieven; deze gaan voornamelijk over zijn diensten als baäl tokea.

Hyman Tobias Tal (1854-1938) achieved fame and acclaim through his performances as a baäl tokea (shofar player) in various synagogues in Amsterdam. He died in Bussum on 12 May 1938. The archive consists of letters sent to Tal, most of which concerned his services as a shofar player.

Het archief van Albert Verwey (1865-1937) bestaat uit de literaire en wetenschappelijke nalatenschap van de schrijver, criticus en literatuurhistoricus Albert Verwey. Naast manuscripten, documentatie, boeken en overdrukken bevat het een uitzonderlijke hoeveelheid ingekomen brieven en afschriften van verzonden brieven. Voorts is documentatie- en beeldmateriaal aanwezig. Het archief is onmisbaar voor de bestudering van leven en werk van Albert Verwey en biedt inzicht in het literaire en geestelijke klimaat van zijn generatie.

The archive of Albert Verwey (1865-1937) contains literary and scholarly papers of the writer of prose, poetry and drama, the critic of literature and the Leiden professor of literature Albert Verwey. Together with many manuscripts, books and off-prints of many articles and sections with documentary and iconographical materials, the Archive of Albert Verwey includes circa 20.000 letters to Verwey as well as circa 10.000 letters from his hand. The substantial importance of the collection for teaching and research in many fields can be enlarged by including the Verwey materials of a number of other collections at the Allard Pierson, such as the collections of his children Mea and Floris Verwey, of his brothers-in-law Frederik van Eeden and Willem Witsen, as well as Verwey collections brought together by others.

Betreft correspondentie voor zijn in 1933 verschenen biografie over de schrijver Willem Levinus Penning (1840-1924) en een door Visser – waarschijnlijk antiquarisch – verworven verzameling van 118 brieven uit het archief van de Haarlemse uitgeverij W. Gosler & Co.

Manuscript material from the legacy of Jacob Visser, a teacher of Dutch language and literature who lived from 1899 to 1989. It contains personal material - mainly correspondence - about his dissertation on the life of the Dutch author Willem Levinus Penning (1840-1924), published in 1933. The collection also includes 118 letters, mostly written between 1882 and 1887, obtained by Jacob Visser from the archive of the Dutch publisher Willem Gosler (1858-1921).

Simon Philip de Vries (Neede 1870 - Bergen Belsen 1944) behaalde de hoogste graad van godsdienstleraar aan het Nederlands-Israëlitisch Seminarium. Een jaar later werd hij aangenomen als leraar, hoofdonderwijzer en secretaris van de joodse gemeente in Haarlem. Toen De Vries in dat jaar alsnog zijn titel van rabbijn wist te behalen werd hij ook rabbijn van deze joodse gemeente. In 1927 en 1932 werden de artikelen die De Vries in 'De Oprechte Haarlemsche Courant' had gepubliceerd, uitgegeven onder de titel 'Joodsche riten en symbolen'. Het zou het meest bekende en gelezen werk van De Vries worden. Het handschriftelijke materiaal in het archief bestaat uit preken, toespraken, lezingen, exegese en aantekeningen over Hebreeuwse grammatica. Het gedrukte materiaal bestaat uit De Vries' artikelen die in 'De Oprechte Haarlemsche Courant' zijn verschenen.

Simon Philip de Vries (Neede 1870 - Bergen Belsen 1944) obtained the highest qualification of teacher of religion at the Amsterdam Rabbinical Seminary. One year later, he was employed as teacher, headmaster and secretary of the Jewish congregation in Haarlem. In the same year, De Vries was awarded the degree of rabbi and became rabbi of the congregation. Articles published by De Vries in 'De Oprechte Haarlemsche Courant' appeared under the title 'Jewish rites and symbols' in 1927 and 1932. This was to become De Vries's best-known and most widely read work. The handwritten material in the archive comprises sermons, addresses, lectures, exegeses and notes on Hebrew grammar. The printed material is made up of De Vries's articles that appeared in 'De Oprechte Haarlemsche Courant'.

Lion Wagenaar werd in 1855 in Amsterdam geboren. Als zeer begaafde student sloot Wagenaar zijn opleiding aan het Nederlands-Israëlitisch Seminarium, onder leiding van rector dr. Joseph Dünner, af met de graad van moree. Op 25-jarige leeftijd werd Wagenaar conrector bij het Seminarium, maar koos na zes jaar toch voor een pastoraal-halachische baan als opperrabbijn van het synagogaal ressort Friesland en daarna van Gelderland. De jaren als opperrabbijn beïnvloedden Wagenaars ideeën over goed godsdienstonderwijs. In 1918 keerde hij terug naar het Nederlands-Israëlitisch Seminarium, ditmaal in de functie van rector, die hij tot zijn dood in 1930 zou vervullen. Het archief bevat naast enkele ingekomen brieven voornamelijk schriften en losse bladen met (theologische) aantekeningen.

Lion Wagenaar was born in Amsterdam in 1855. A gifted student, Wagenaar concluded his studies with a moré diploma from the Amsterdam Rabbinical Seminary, which was headed by Rector Joseph Dünner. Wagenaar was appointed vice-rector of the seminary at the age of 25, but after six years, opted for a pastoral Halakhic job as chief rabbi for the synagogue district of Friesland, and later for Gelderland. His years as chief rabbi influenced his ideas about good religious education. He returned to the Amsterdam Rabbinical Seminary in 1918, this time as rector, a position he held until his death in 1930. In addition to several incoming letters, the archive consists largely of notebooks and individual sheets of theological and other notes.

De stukken stammen met name uit zijn Amsterdamse jaren en zijn door hem geschonken aan, dan wel verzameld door, zijn vriendin Miep (Jacomina Jacoba Berendina) van 't Hoff-Kools (1893-1945). Het betreft manuscripten, typoscripten en publicaties van literair werk, artikelen en kookboeken. De collectie bevat verder correspondentie, foto's en opdrachtexemplaren van publicaties. Met latere aanvullingen.

This collection contains material by or about the poet, author, journalist and translator Johan Willem Frederik Werumeus Buning (1891-1958). Most of the material dates from the period he lived in Amsterdam and was given to or collected by his girl-friend, Miep van 't Hoff-Kools. The collection consists of manuscripts, typescripts, literary publications, articles and cookery books. Besides this, there is correspondence, there are photographs and there are copies of dedicated publications. Since the donation of the collection to the Special Collections in 2005, material has been added to the collection.

Deze Engelsman is in Nederland werkzaam geweest als vertaler Nederlands-Engels en Engels-Nederlands. Naast correspondentie, onder meer met auteurs als P.C. Boutens, Lodewijk van Deyssel en Felix Timmermans, zijn manuscripten aanwezig van Wildermuths eigen literaire werk en van zijn vertalingen van andermans werk.

This collection mainly consists of handwritten material by or about Henry Raymund Wildermuth. Wildermuth was an Englishman who worked as a translator of Dutch texts into English and vice versa. Besides correspondence with authors, such as P.C. Boutens, Lodewijk van Deyssel and Felix Timmermans, the collection also contains manuscripts of Wildermuth's own literary work and his translations.
