Instructieve wandplaten op groot formaat, aangeschaft en vervaardigd ten behoeve van het onderwijs in de botanie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam in de periode 1877-1964. Meer dan de helft is handwerk, in opdracht in Nederland vervaardigd; de rest bestaat uit voornamelijk Duitse gedrukte series. De collectie als geheel geeft een uitstekend beeld van het onderwijs aan de UvA en van de belangrijkste onderzoeksgebieden in de betreffende periode. Enkele platen rond de mutatieleer van Hugo de Vries en de herontdekking van de wetten van Mendel zijn van internationaal belang. Bevat fraaie, vakkundig geaquarelleerde platen.

Wall charts, collected and created by the University of Amsterdam in the period 1877-1964, for the instruction in botany. A part consists of German printed series, the other, larger part consists of handmade wall charts, made under the authority of the department of botany. The collection represents the state of science in the indicated period. Several charts show the discovery of mutation and the rediscovery of Mendel's laws by Hugo de Vries and are of worldwide importance. A part is professionally drawn and of great artistic quality.

De collectie bestaat uit twee collegedictaten van B.A. van Doorn uit 1829 van colleges in de delfstofkunde en de botanie en een viertal handschriften betreffende brandbare stoffen, delfstoffen en plantaardige scheikunde.

The library consists of Dutch and foreign books and periodicals in the field of horticulture and botany. They have been collected by the Koninklijke Maatschappij voor Tuinbouw en Plantkunde (the Dutch royal society for horticulture and botany).

De collectie Linnaeana van de Rotterdamse entomoloog F.C.J. Fischer bestaat uit literatuur van en over Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778): 85 publicaties zijn van Linnaeus' hand en 269 publicaties behandelen zijn werk of zijn geschreven door leerlingen van hem. Deze laatste categorie betreft dissertaties die waarschijnlijk deels door Linnaeus geschreven of geredigeerd werden. De toevoeging van de collectie Fischer in 1967 aan de collectie Linnaeana van de Artis Bibliotheek maakt dat deze instelling nu – internationaal – een van de meest omvangrijke collecties Linnaeana beheert.

The collection of Linnaeana belonging to the Rotterdam entomologist F.C.J. Fischer (approx. 1930-1970) consists of literature by and about Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778). Eighty-five publications are by Linnaeus himself and 269 publications deal with his work or were written by his students. The latter category consists of dissertations which were probably partly written or edited by Linnaeus. The Fischer collection was added to the collection of Linnaeana in the Artis Bibliotheek (Artis library) in 1967. As a result the Artis Bibliotheek has become the library managing one of the largest collections of Linnaeana in the world.

Dit archief werd nagelaten door de plantkundige Willem Meijer met betrekking tot zijn Indonesische en Nederlandse activiteiten, vooral gedurende de periode 1951-1968. Het bevat artikelen (geannoteerd en in concept), botanische tekeningen en beschrijvingen, collectiebeschrijvingen en professionele correspondentie. Enkele documenten hebben betrekking op zijn studie/schooltijd en activiteiten na emeritaat.

This archive was bequeathed by the botanist Willem Meijer and relates to his Indonesian and Dutch activities, especially during the period 1951-1968. It comprises articles (annotated and draft), botanical drawings and descriptions, collection descriptions and professional correspondence. Some documents bear on his school years and/or study years and activities following his retirement.

Het archief bevat zakelijke en persoonlijke stukken van Meijer Pinkhof (1892-1943), van 1921 tot 1940 werkzaam als assistent en privaatdocent aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Hij kwam om in vernietigingskamp Sobibor.

The archive contains professional and personal items of Meijer Pinkhof (1892-1943), who worked as assistant and Privatdozent at the University of Amsterdam from 1921 until 1940. He was murdered at Sobibor extermination camp.

De Stichting Wetenschappelijk Duinonderzoek (SWD, 1948–1980) had als doel het bevorderen en coördineren van biologisch en geomorfologisch onderzoek van de duinen en aangrenzende kustgebieden in Nederland. Daartoe richtte de SWD biologische onderzoekstations in op Voorne (Weevers’ Duin) en Terschelling (Schellingerland). De SWD verstrekte subsidies voor (promotie)onderzoek gericht op flora, fauna en maritiem-geologische onderwerpen. Ze verkreeg haar inkomsten door donaties van particulieren en instellingen, uit de exploitatie van de onderzoekstations en door subsidies van de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Zuiver-Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (ZWO). In 1958 droeg de SWD het beheer van Weevers’ Duin over aan het Instituut voor Oecologisch Onderzoek (IOO) en in 1959 dat van Schellingerland aan het Rijksinstituut voor Veldbiologisch Onderzoek ten behoeve van het Natuurbehoud (RIVON). De SWD bleef een stimulerende en coördinerende rol spelen bij het duinonderzoek vanuit de beide onderzoekstations. Het archief bestaat in hoofdzaak uit stukken die betrekking hebben op het ontstaan en functioneren van de SWD en van de beide onderzoekstations. Vermeldenswaard zijn de geïllustreerde gastenboeken van het biologisch station Schellingerland. Voorts bevat het archief rapporteringen van systematische waarnemingen van flora en (avi)fauna op Terschelling uit de jaren 1957–1983.

The Stichting Wetenschappelijk Duinonderzoek (SWD, a foundation for scientific research into dunes, 1948–1980) was set up to promote and coordinate biological and geomorphological research into the dunes and adjoining coastal areas in the Netherlands. To this end the SWD established biological field stations in Voorne in the province of South Holland (Weevers’ Duin) and on the island of Terschelling (Schellingerland). The SWD provided grants for research, including PhD studies, into flora, fauna and marine geology subjects. The foundation’s income came from private and institutional donors, the running of the field stations and funding from the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Zuiver-Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (ZWO, the Netherlands Organization for Pure Scientific Research). In 1958 the SWD transferred the management of Weevers’ Duin to the Instituut voor Oecologisch Onderzoek (IOO, the Institute for Ecological Research), and in 1959 it transferred that of Schellingerland to the Rijksinstituut voor Veldbiologisch Onderzoek ten behoeve van het Natuurbehoud (RIVON). The SWD continued to stimulate and coordinate dune research within the two field stations. The archive mainly consists of documents relating to the origin and functioning of the SWD and the two field stations. The illustrated guest books of the Schellingerland biological station are particularly noteworthy. The archive furthermore contains reports of systematic observations of plants, animals and birds at Terschelling in the years 1957–1983.

Het archief van Theo J. Stomps, hoogleraar plantkunde aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam van 1910 tot 1945, bevat correspondentie, stukken over zijn opleiding, aantekeningen van wetenschappelijk onderzoek, materiaal betreffende publicaties en lezingen, eerbewijzen, herinneringen aan buitenlandse studiereizen, stukken over zijn colleges en (buitenlandse) excursies met studenten, alsmede over zijn directeurschap van de Hortus Botanicus. Het geeft inzicht in het werk van een Nederlands botanicus die honderden studenten geneeskunde, farmacie en plant- en dierkunde onderwees en onderzoek deed naar erfelijkheid.

The archive of Theo J. Stomps, full professor at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from 1910 until 1945, contains documents about his education, correspondence, notes of his scientific research, documents concerning publications and lectures, tokens of honour, souvenirs from his travels abroad, documents relating to his lectures for university students, and documents that followed from his directorship of the Hortus Botanicus of the University of Amsterdam. The archive illustrates the work of a Dutch botanist who trained hundreds of students of medicine, pharmacy and biology, and researched the mechanisms of heredity.

Het archief van Eduard Verschaffelt, buitengewoon hoogleraar farmacognosie en fysiologie der planten aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam vanaf 1896 en directeur van de Hortus Botanicus van 1918 tot 1923, bestaat uit aantekeningen van zijn onderzoek naar de invloed van vergiften op planten.

The archive of Eduard Verschaffelt, endowed Professor of Pharmacognosy and Plant Physiology at the University of Amsterdam from 1896 and director of the Hortus Botanicus from 1918 until 1923, consists of notes he made for his research into the action of poisons on plants.
