Johan Somerwil (1926-2009) was jarenlang werkzaam voor de uitgeverijen Meulenhoff en Wolters Kluwer. Dit archief beslaat de periode die hij betrokken was bij het Comité van Importeurs van Boeken en Tijdschriften (CIBT), het Uitgevers Distributie Centrum (UDC) en de Uitgevers Verkoop Maatschappij (UVEMA).

Johan Somerwil (1926-2009) worked for many years for the publishing firms of Meulenhoff and Wolters Kluwer. The archive encompasses the period of his involvement in the Comité van Importeurs van Boeken en Tijdschriften (CIBT, committee of book and magazine importers), the Uitgevers Distributie Centrum (UDC, publishers’ distribution centre) and the Uitgevers Verkoop Maatschappij (UVEMA, publishers’ vending company).

Stichting Speurwerk betreffende het Boek (SSB) was een door de Vereeniging ter Bevordering van de Belangen des Boekhandels opgerichte instelling die onderzoek verrichtte naar de diverse aspecten van de boekenmarkt, zowel op het gebied van het consumentengedrag als de positie van de verschillende brancheorganisaties (uitgeverij, boekhandel, distributie).

Stichting Speurwerk betreffende het Boek (SSB) was an agency set up by the Vereeniging ter Bevordering van de Belangen des Boekhandels (association for the promotion of booksellers’ interests) to research various aspects of the book market regarding consumer behaviour as well as the position of the several trade organisations (publishing, bookselling, distribution).

Het archief van Theo J. Stomps, hoogleraar plantkunde aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam van 1910 tot 1945, bevat correspondentie, stukken over zijn opleiding, aantekeningen van wetenschappelijk onderzoek, materiaal betreffende publicaties en lezingen, eerbewijzen, herinneringen aan buitenlandse studiereizen, stukken over zijn colleges en (buitenlandse) excursies met studenten, alsmede over zijn directeurschap van de Hortus Botanicus. Het geeft inzicht in het werk van een Nederlands botanicus die honderden studenten geneeskunde, farmacie en plant- en dierkunde onderwees en onderzoek deed naar erfelijkheid.

The archive of Theo J. Stomps, full professor at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from 1910 until 1945, contains documents about his education, correspondence, notes of his scientific research, documents concerning publications and lectures, tokens of honour, souvenirs from his travels abroad, documents relating to his lectures for university students, and documents that followed from his directorship of the Hortus Botanicus of the University of Amsterdam. The archive illustrates the work of a Dutch botanist who trained hundreds of students of medicine, pharmacy and biology, and researched the mechanisms of heredity.

Het Sociografisch dispuut S.T.R.A.B.O. werd opgericht in 1952 als dispuut van de Amsterdamse Studentenvereniging voor Sociographie (A.S.V.S.). Het archief van S.T.R.A.B.O. bevat onder andere het secretariaatsarchief, correspondentie, notulen en verslagen vanaf de oprichting tot de opheffing in 1967.

S.T.R.A.B.O. was founded in 1952 as the debating society of the Amsterdamse Studentenvereniging voor Sociographie, the student union for social demography (ASVS). The collection contains among other things the archive of the secretarial office, correspondence, minutes and reports, all from the day it was founded until it was discontinued in 1967.

Het archief is afkomstig van de bedrijven van G.T.N. Suringar en zijn zoon Hugo, die in Leeuwarden een boekwinkel, een drukkerij/uitgeverij en een veilinghuis dreven. Het archief beslaat de periode 1809-1918. Het archief omvat onder meer circa 7000 brieven van en aan G.T.N. en Hugo Suringar en zeventien registers met uitgaande brieven van de boekhandel en uitgeverij uit de periode 1822-1882. Daarnaast zijn er administratieve stukken met betrekking tot de bedrijfsvoering van de bedrijven van G.T.N. en Hugo Suringar. Een groot aantal manuscripten, drukproeven, uiteindelijke drukken, illustratiemateriaal en prospectussen is overgeleverd van de door vader en zoon Suringar uitgegeven auteurs. Het archief biedt inzicht in de organisatie van een vooraanstaande negentiende-eeuwse, voornamelijk literair getinte boekhandel en uitgeverij, in de relatie met auteurs en collega's, alsmede in het beoogde publiek en de klantenkring in de firma. Het gehele archief is digitaal beschikbaar.

The archive stems from the companies of G.T.N. Suringar and his son Hugo, who ran a bookshop, a printing and publishing house and an auction house in Leeuwarden. The archive covers the years 1809-1918 and includes some 7,000 letters by and to G.T.N. and Hugo Suringar as well as 17 registers of outgoing letters by the bookshop and publishing house dating from the years 1822-1882. In addition there are clerical documents relating to the running of the firms of G.T.N. and Hugo Suringar. A large number of manuscripts, proofs, finished books, illustration materials and brochures have survived relating to the authors who were published by father and son Suringar. The archive throws light on the organisation of a prominent nineteenth-century, mainly literary, bookshop and publishing house, on the relationship with authors and colleagues as well as the intended audience and the firm’s customers. Archief en muziekbibliotheek van het in 1878 opgerichte studentenmuziekgezelschap Sodalicium Studiosorum Musicum Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. De muziekbibliotheek bevat ook enkele stukken voor de Amsterdamsche Vrouwelijke Studenten Muziekvereniging AEDON, waarmee intensief werd samengewerkt.

Archive and music library of Sodalicium Studiosorum Musicum Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, an orchestra for students. The music library also contains a number of pieces of the Amsterdam choir for female students, AEDON. Both student societies worked together closely.

De Swing Papa’s was een Nederlands amateur-jazzorkest dat actief was in de jaren 1935-1943. Het orkest werd opgericht door drummer Iwan Poustochkine. De band trad regelmatig op in Nederland en enkele keren in het buitenland op jazz-concoursen. De vaste bezetting wisselde in de loop der jaren en er waren vaak invallers of extra leden. Door de Duitse bezetting vanaf 1940 werd het steeds moeilijker om muziek te maken en vanaf 1943 was dit praktisch onmogelijk waardoor het orkest stopte met optreden. Het archief bestaat voornamelijk uit correspondentie uit de periode 1935-1941 die een duidelijk beeld geeft van de activiteiten van het orkest.

Founded by drummer Iwan Poustochkine, the Dutch amateur jazz orchestra The Swing Papa’s was active in the years 1935-1943. The band regularly performed in the Netherlands and occasionally took part in jazz competitions abroad. The regular line-up changed in the course of the years, with the band often taking stand-in musicians or extra members on board. The German occupation in 1940 made it increasingly difficult to play music, becoming all but impossible from 1943, so that the band stopped performing. The archive, which mainly consists of correspondence covering the years 1935-1941, provides a clear illustration of the orchestra’s activities.

De firma Tetterode, formeel bekend als Lettergieterij 'Amsterdam' voorheen N. Tetterode, was een belangrijke internationale lettergieterij en handelaar in grafische machines. Het bedrijfsarchief geeft inzicht in de activiteiten van het bedrijf bij de ontwikkeling en verkoop van lettertypes en grafische apparatuur. Als onderdeel van de Collectie Tetterode maakt het zichtbaar hoe de verschillende collecties en archieven die afkomstig zijn van Tetterode, en deel uitmaken van de collecties van de Universiteit van Amsterdam, aan elkaar gerelateerd zijn.

The Tetterode company, officially known as Lettergieterij 'Amsterdam' voorheen N. Tetterode, was a prominent international type foundry and trader in graphic machines. The company archive sheds light on its activities in developing and selling typefaces and graphic equipment. As part of the Tetterode collection, it highlights the interrelations between the various collections and archives that originate from the Tetterode company and are now part of the University of Amsterdam’s collections.

De Dr. P.A. Tiele-Stichting (1953-heden) is in 1953 opgericht om liefde en belangstelling voor het boek op te wekken. Het archief beslaat de periode 1953-2003, toen de stichting gehuisvest was in Amsterdam.

De grafisch ontwerper Otto Treumann (Fürth, Duitsland 1919 – Weesp 2001) kwam uit een liberaal-joods gezin. In 1935 vluchtte hij voor de nazi's. Hij ging lessen volgen aan de Amsterdamse Grafische School en later aan de Nieuwe Kunstschool bij Hajo Rose, waar hij door de Bauhaus-principes beïnvloed werd. Tijdens de oorlog maakte hij illegaal drukwerk, waardoor hij het drukkersvak goed onder de knie kreeg. In 1945 begon Treumann voor zichzelf. Hij ontwierp onder meer affiches voor de Bond van Nederlandse Architecten, omslagontwerpen voor het tijdschrift Rayon Revue en herdenkingszegels voor de PTT. Ook heeft hij veel ontworpen voor joodse organisaties en voor de Israëlische luchtvaartmaatschappij El Al. Daarnaast was hij voorzitter van de Gebonden Kunsten federatie (GKf).

The graphic designer Otto Treumann (Fürth, Germany 1919 – Weesp 2001) came from a liberal Jewish family. In 1935, he fled from the Nazis. He started taking classes at the Amsterdamse Grafische School and later at the Nieuwe Kunstschool with Hajo Rose, where he was influenced by the Bauhaus principles. During the war, he created illegal printings, giving him good skills in the printing profession. In 1945, Treumann started his own business. Among much else, he designed posters for the Bond van Nederlandse Architecten (Association of Dutch Architects), front covers for the magazine Rayon Revue, memorial stamps for the Dutch postal service. He also made many of designs for Jewish organisations and for the Israeli airline company El Al. In addition, he was chairman of the Gebonden Kunsten Federatie (Federation of Applied Arts) (GKf).

Het archief bestaat uit de boekhoudkundige registers van de Boekhandel Tummers, van de reisboekhandel Pied-à-Terre en de internationale groothandel in reisgidsen en kaarten Passepartout, die in Amsterdam gevestigd waren. De Boekhandel Tummers bestond van 1965 tot 1993. Haar eigenaar Richard Tummers richtte in 1977 de reisboekhandel Pied-à-Terre op.

The archive contains the accounting ledgers of Tummers Bookshop, the Pied-à-Terre travel bookshop and Passepartout, an international wholesale business for travel guides and maps, all of which were established in Amsterdam. Tummers Bookshop was in business from 1965 to 1993. Owner Richard Tummers set up the Pied-à-Terre travel bookshop in 1977.

De Twents-Gelderse uitgeverij Witkam-De Bruijn is in 1966 voortgekomen uit de boekhandel van W. Witkam te Enschede. De uitgeverij was gespecialiseerd in titels over Twente en de Gelderse Achterhoek. Zij werd in 1991 overgenomen door A. de Bruijn. Het archief bevat voornamelijk alfabetisch op naam van de auteur geordende dossiers.

The publishing house Twents-Gelderse uitgeverij Witkam-De Bruijn in 1966 grew out of the bookshop run by W. Witkam in Enschede. As a publisher he specialized in titles about the regions of Twente and the Achterhoek of the province of Gelderland. In 1991 A. de Bruijn took over the firm. The archive mainly contains files ordered alphabetically by author.

Unitas Studiosorum Amstelodamensium werd in 1911 opgericht. Deze studentengezelligheidsvereniging beschouwde zich als de opvolger van de Amsterdamsche Studenten Bond (A.S.B.), die in 1901 ophield te bestaan. Omdat men er geen fysieke ontgroening kende, gold U.S.A. als een moderne vereniging. U.S.A. had een gemengd karakter, een lage contributie en een informele sfeer. Na een bloeitijd vanaf 1925 ging het na 1967 snel bergafwaarts. In 1976 was er een succesvolle doorstart. Het archief is onvolledig. Uit de periode 1950-1967 ontbreekt veel. Naast de gebruikelijke correspondentie met zuster- en andere verenigingen, eigen leden, leveranciers, universiteit en gemeente zijn er financiële stukken, merendeels uit de periode 1930-1940. Interessant – hoewel incompleet – zijn de notulen van senaatsvergaderingen en algemene vergaderingen. Daarnaast zijn er foto's, almanakken en periodieken.

Unitas Studiosorum Amstelodamensium was founded in 1911. This student union focused mainly on companionship and considered itself the successor of the Amsterdamsche Studenten Bond, the Amsterdam student association, which ceased to exist in 1901. Since there was no physical rag day Unitas Studiosorum Amstelodamensium is considered to be a modern student union. USA had mixed characteristics, a low membership fee and an informal atmosphere. After flourishing from 1925 onwards it lost its appeal after 1967. It started up again with success in 1976. Unfortunately, the collection is rather incomplete. Much is missing, in particular from the period 1950-1967. In addition to the usual correspondence with other student unions, with their own members, suppliers, the university and the municipality, there are financial documents, mostly from the period 1930-1940. Quite interesting, although incomplete, are the minutes of the meetings of the senate and of other meetings. The collection also contains photographs, almanacs and periodicals.

De journalist, Verwey-biograaf en dichter Maurits Uyldert werkte onder andere bij het Algemeen Handelsblad (1923-1946) waar hij redacteur voor letteren en toneel was. Ook was hij medewerker van het tijdschrift De beweging. Hij schreef een driedelige biografie over Albert Verwey die tussen 1948 en 1959 werd gepubliceerd. Het archief bevat literair werk (in handschrift, typoscript en proefdruk), correspondentie, kopij voor artikelen, werkmateriaal, personalia en publicaties. Het archief is van belang voor de bestudering van het Nederlandse journalistieke leven in het interbellum en van het leven en het werk van Albert Verwey en Alex Gutteling.

The journalist, Verwey biographer and poet Maurits Uyldert worked as a theatre and literature editor for the newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad (1923-1946) and as an editor for the periodical De Beweging. He produced a three-volume biography of Dutch poet Albert Verwey, which was published between 1948 and 1959. The archive includes literary work (manuscripts, typescripts and proofs), correspondence, copy for articles, working material, personal documents and published works. The archive is important for the study of the Dutch journalistic scene in the interwar years, as well as for the life and work of Albert Verwey and the Dutch poet and critic Alex Gutteling.

Het omvangrijke archief van de Vereeniging ter bevordering van de belangen des Boekhandels documenteert de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse boekhandel sinds het begin van de negentiende eeuw. Vanaf 1923 is het de geschiedenis van het kartel, dat via het Reglement Handelsverkeer en de vaste boekenprijs de boekenmarkt domineerde. Archieven van fondsen en commissies van de Vereeniging die vaak taken uitvoerden die na 2000 uit de Vereeniging verzelfstandigd werden, maken eveneens deel uit van het archief.

The large archive of the Vereeniging ter bevordering van de belangen des Boekhandels (association for the promotion of booksellers’ interests) documents the history of the Dutch book trade since the early nineteenth century. From 1923 the focus has been on the history of the syndicate, which dominated the book market through the Reglement Handelsverkeer (trade regulation) and the fixed book price. Archives of funding bodies and committees of the Vereeniging, which often performed tasks that are carried out by other, independent bodies, since 2000, are also part of this archive.

Archief van een vereniging die zich ten doel stelde de kennis van haar leden – aankomende boekhandelaren werkzaam in Amsterdam – betreffende hun vak en aanverwante vakken, met name de letterkunde, te vergroten. Dit gebeurde door het houden van wekelijkse lezingen, het bijeenbrengen van een bibliotheek en het laten circuleren van boeken en tijdschriften. Het archief bevat reglementen, bibliotheekcatalogi, uittreksels van jaarverslagen, notulen, portretten, manuscripten en correspondentie.

The archive of an association of prospective book traders working in Amsterdam. The aim of the association was to increase the knowledge of its members of their trade and related professions, in particular literature. As such, the association organized weekly lectures, it distributed books and periodicals and founded a library. The archive contains the rules and regulations, library catalogues, excerpts of annual reports, minutes, portraits, manuscripts and correspondence.

De collectie omvat in de eerste plaats de bibliotheek van de Verenigde Doopsgezinde Gemeente Amsterdam (VDGA), begonnen in 1680. Deze bibliotheek werd vanaf 1735 gebruikt voor de Doopsgezinde Kweekschool. Zwaartepunten zijn geschriften van voor- en tegenstanders van het revolutionair anabaptisme, vroegreformatorische bijbels, theologische en polemische geschriften van vooraanstaande 17de-eeuwse en 18de-eeuwse leraren en werken over doopsgezinde literatoren en kunstenaars. Daarnaast is er een rijke prentencollectie. In de handschriftencollectie zijn er 16de-eeuwse tractaten van David Joris, de enige overgebleven brief van Menno Simons en 18de- tot 20de-eeuwse preken en collegedictaten. Ten slotte bevat de collectie het Doopsgezind Documentatiecentrum.

This collection contains the library of the Mennonite community in Amsterdam, the 'Doopsgezinde Gemeente Amsterdam' (VDGA), which was begun in 1680. From 1735 onwards the library was used for the Mennonite seminary. The core of the collection consists of documents by advocates and opponents of revolutionary Anabaptism, early reformational bibles, theological and polemical texts by leading 17th and 18th century teachers, documents about literary Mennonites and Mennonite artists. Besides this, there is a rich collection of prints. Finally, manuscripts were collected, for instance of the 16th century David Joris, of 18th to 20th Century lecture notes and the only letter that was left of Menno Simons. The Mennonite Documentation Centre is also included in his collection.

In 1872 werd de Vereniging tot Aanmoediging van het Arme Schoolkind te Amsterdam opgericht om de hygiëne te bevorderen van arme joodse schoolkinderen in Amsterdam. Ook richtte de vereniging zich op het bevorderen van regelmatig schoolbezoek. Op 8 april 1942 werd de vereniging ontbonden. In het archief bevinden zich een notulenboek over de periode 1894-1919, jaarverslagen over de periode 1912-1917, enkele ledenlijsten en correspondentie.

The Association for the Support of Poor School Children was established in Amsterdam in 1872 to promote hygiene among poor Jewish children in Amsterdam. The association also aimed to encourage regular school attendance. It was dissolved on 8 April 1942. The archives contain a book of minutes for the period 1894-1919, annual reports for the period 1912-1917, several membership lists and correspondence.

De collectie van de Vereniging van Leraren in het Schoonschrijven bestaat voornamelijk uit gedrukte werken met betrekking tot de kalligrafie en de schrijfkunst in het algemeen.

The collection of the Vereniging van Leraren in het Schoonschrijven (society of calligraphy teachers) mainly consists of printed works on the subject of calligraphy and the art of writing in general.

Het bestuursarchief van de Vereniging van Muziekhandelaren en -uitgevers in Nederland, de brancheorganisatie die opkomt voor de belangen van verkopers en uitgevers van bladmuziek en van handelaren in muziekrechten. Het archief is verre van compleet, vooral voor de periode vóór 1970.

The board archive of the trade organisation Vereniging van Muziekhandelaren en -uitgevers in Nederland (Dutch association of music dealers and publishers) is far from complete. The period prior to 1970 especially is underrepresented.

De componist Matthijs Vermeulen (1888-1967), geboren Van der Meulen, is de auteur van symfonieën (zeven), kamermuziek, liederen en enkele boeken over muziek en filosofie. Hij was daarnaast criticus en essayist. In 1921 vestigde Vermeulen zich met vrouw en kinderen in Frankrijk. Hij voorzag in zijn levensonderhoud door het schrijven van artikelen voor het Soerabaiasch Handelsblad. Tijdens de oorlog verloor Vermeulen zijn vrouw en zoon Josquin. In 1946 keerde hij terug naar Nederland en werd recensent bij De Groene Amsterdammer. Hij hertrouwde met Thea Diepenbrock. Sindsdien componeerde hij nog twee liederen, het Strijkkwartet en de Zesde en Zevende Symfonie. Hij overleed op 26 juli 1967 in Laren.

The composer Matthijs Vermeulen (1888-1967), né Van der Meulen, is the author of symphonies (seven), instrumental and vocal chamber music and books about music and philosophy. He was also a renowned music critic and essayist. In 1921 Vermeulen settled in France with his wife and children sustaining his livelihood through writing articles for the Soerabaiasch Handelsblad, a Dutch East-Indies daily. During the war Vermeulen lost both his wife and his son Josquin. In 1946 he returned to the Netherlands and became a music critic for De Groene Amsterdammer. He remarried with Thea Diepenbrock. Since then he composed two more songs, the String Quartet and the Sixth and Seventh Symphonies. Matthijs Vermeulen died on July 26, 1967 in Laren.
