Salomon Alfred Bruijning groeide op in Suriname, als pleegzoon van de bekende Surinaamse jurist en historicus Philip Abraham Samson (1902-1966) en Hanna Josephine Samuels (1905-1995), de zuster van zijn moeder. In hetzelfde huis woonde een andere zuster, Juliette Erna Samuels (1902-1976). Salomon Alfred Bruijning is zeer betrokken bij de nagedachtenis van zijn oom Ph.A. Samson en zet zich in voor het behoud van diens intellectuele erfgoed. De collectie bestaat uit stukken die komen uit de nalatenschappen van Philip Abraham Samson, Juliette Erna Samuels, Estelle Samuels en uit stukken afkomstig van S.A. Bruijning zelf. De collectie bevat persoonlijke documenten, foto's en stukken betreffende Suriname in het algemeen, de Staten van Suriname en de joodse gemeenschap van Suriname.

Salomon Alfred Bruijning grew up in Suriname, as the foster son of the well-known Surinamese jurist and historian Philip Abraham Samson (1902-1966) and Hanna Josephine Samuels (1905-1995), a sister of Bruijning's mother. Another of his mother's sisters, Juliette Erna Samuels (1902-1976), lived in the same house. Salomon Alfred Bruijning is very closely involved in keeping the memory of his uncle P.A. Samson alive and has dedicated himself to the preservation of his intellectual heritage. The collection consists of items from the estate of Philip Abraham Samson, Juliette Erna Samuels and Estelle Samuels as well as items from S.A. Bruijning himself. The collection contains personal documents, photographs and items about Suriname in general, the States of Suriname and the Jewish community in Suriname.

Derk Buddingh, kostschoolhouder in Den Haag, was medeoprichter van het Nederlands Onderwijzers Genootschap (1842) en de Paedagogische Bibliotheek (1867). Hij sloot zijn loopbaan af als bibliothecaris van wat nu de bibliotheek van de Technische Universiteit in Delft is. Buddinghs brede belangstelling blijkt uit het actieve lidmaatschap van enkele belangrijke culturele instellingen. De collectie, die geheel uit handschriftelijk materiaal bestaat, vormde zijn persoonlijk archief en weerspiegelt zijn activiteiten op het brede terrein van onderwijs en opvoeding, geschiedenis en Nederlandse letterkunde. Het gaat hierbij om brieven, artikelen, lezingen, manuscripten, vertalingen en persoonlijke aantekeningen.

Together with some others Derk Buddingh, director of a boarding school in The Hague, founded the Dutch teachers association ('Nederlands Onderwijzers Genootschap') in 1842 and the Paedagogische Bibliotheek (pedagogic library) in 1867. He ended his career as the librarian of what is nowadays the library of the Delft University of Technology. Buddingh's broad interest appears from the fact that he was also actively involved as a member of a number of important cultural institutions. The collection, which consists entirely of manuscripts, was his personal archive and reflects his activities in the broad areas of history, Dutch literature and in education and upbringing. The material consists of letters, articles, presentations, manuscripts, translations and personal notes.

De collectie S. van der Burg bestaat uit werken betreffende Friesland en de Friese taal en letterkunde, en onderwijs in de Friese taal. Daarnaast bevat de collectie archivalia van verenigingen actief op het terrein van de Friese taal.

The collection brought together by S. van der Burg consists of works relating to Friesland, the Frisian language and literature as well as teaching Frisian. The collection also contains archival materials of societies devoted to the Frisian language.

Het archief bevat de administratie van veilinghuis, antiquariaat, uitgeverij en boekhandel Burgersdijk & Niermans (ca. 1894-1959). Het materiaal in dit archief kan inzicht bieden in (het financiële aspect van) het boekbedrijf in Nederland van het einde van de 19e tot het midden van de 20e eeuw.

The archive contains the administration of auctioneering firm, antiquarian bookshop, publisher and bookshop Burgersdijk & Niermans (ca. 1894-1959). The archival material can give insight in (the financial aspect of) the book trade in the Netherlands from the end of the 19th until the middle of the 20th century.

De Centrale Raad van Vakbonden in het Grafisch- en Boekbedrijf was een samenwerkingsorgaan van bedrijfstakorganisaties in de grafische industrie. De deelnemende bonden traden in 1925 als buitengewone leden toe tot de Vereeniging ter bevordering van de belangen des Boekhandels. Daarna vormden zij binnen de Vereeniging de Centrale Raad voor Vakbelangen.

The Centrale Raad van Vakbonden in het Grafisch- en Boekbedrijf (central council of unions in the graphic and book industry) was a collaboration of branch organisations in the graphic industry. The participating unions joined the Vereeniging ter bevordering van de belangen des Boekhandels (association for the promotion of booksellers’ interests) as associate members in 1925, after which they went on to form the Centrale Raad voor Vakbelangen (central council for professional interests) within the association.

Het archief van Circus Kavaljos bevat archiefstukken van zowel de vooroorlogse NV Circus Kavaljos als van de naoorlogse Stichting Kavaljos alsmede promotiemateriaal en plakboeken van beide circussen. Beide circussen ontstonden door het initiatief van Bernard van Leer.

The archive of Circus Kavaljos contains archival documents relating to both the pre-war NV Circus Kavaljos and the post-war Stichting Kavaljos, as well as promotional material and scrapbooks of both circuses. The two circuses were the brainchild of Bernard van Leer.

Stichting Civitas Academica Amstelodamensis (Civitas) werd in 1948 opgericht om de gemeenschapszin, leefomstandigheden en het saamhorigheidsgevoel binnen de Universiteit van Amsterdam te waarborgen en verbeteren. Het merendeel van het archief van Civitas is afkomstig uit de jaren 1960-1978 en bevat onder meer documenten van het dagelijks bestuur, administratie en correspondentie van het eigen tijdschrift Folia Civitatis en verslagen rondom studentenvoorzieningen en studentenhuisvesting. Het archief van Civitas geeft belangrijke inzichten in de idealen en organisatie van een stichting die veel heeft betekend voor het welzijn van studenten aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

Stichting Civitas Academica Amstelodamensis (Civitas) was founded in 1948 to protect and improve community feeling, living conditions and a sense of solidarity within the University of Amsterdam. The greater part of Civitas’ archive is from the years 1960-1978 and includes documents relating to day-to-day management, administration and correspondence of the foundation’s periodical Folia Civitatis as well as reports concerning student facilities and student accommodation. The archive of Civitas provides important insights into the ideals and organization of a foundation that has been of major significance for the well-being of students at the University of Amsterdam.

Het Geschiedkundig Dispuutgezelschap C.L.I.O. werd in 1882 opgericht als dispuut van het Amsterdamsch Studenten Corps (A.S.C.). Het stelde zich de geschiedbeoefening in haar gehele omvang ten doel. Het archief bestaat deels uit de schriftelijke neerslag van de activiteiten van het gezelschap, zoals notulen van vergaderingen, correspondentie en financiële stukken. Het grootste gedeelte vormen echter de door leden vervaardigde scripties, kritieken en redes. Het zwaartepunt ligt op de periode vóór 1902, de bloeiperiode van het gezelschap.

CLIO, the debating society for students of history, was founded in 1882 as the debating society of the ASC (Amsterdam student union). It focused on all aspects of the study of history. The collection consists partly of archival material about the society's activities, such as minutes, correspondence and financial documents. The largest part, however, consists of dissertations, reviews and speeches written by the members of the society. The main part of the collection is from the period before 1902, when the society was in its prime.

In 1883 startte het geschiedkundig dispuutgezelschap C.L.I.O. met het verzamelen van objecten uit de geschiedenis van het hoger onderwijs in Amsterdam in de ruimste zin van het woord. De collectie met materiaal vanaf de zeventiende tot de vroege twintigste eeuw omvat onder andere redes en oraties van hoogleraren, studentenalmanakken, portretprenten en topografische prenten, penningen en insignes, archiefstukken, documenten, brochures, wetten, tijdschriften, zegels en menu's. Deze collectie heeft aan de basis gelegen van de in 1923 opgerichte historische verzameling van de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

In 1883 the debating society of students of history, CLIO, started collecting objects from the history of higher education in Amsterdam in the broadest sense of the word. The collection contains material from the seventeenth century until the early twentieth century. Among other things, there are speeches and inaugural lectures, student almanacs, portraits and topographic pictures, medals and badges, archival documents, brochures, laws, periodicals, stamps and menus. The collection was the starting-point of the historical collection of the University of Amsterdam which was started in 1923.

Het Historisch Litterarisch Leesgezelschap Clio werd heropgericht te Amsterdam in 1856. De leden hielden zich bezig met de aankoop en lezing van de belangrijkste recente verschenen werken over geschiedenis en literatuur. De werken werden naderhand geveild. Het gezelschap rekende verscheidene Amsterdamse notabelen tot haar leden. In 1870 werd het gezelschap opgeheven. Het archief bevat de weerslag van haar activiteiten, onder andere lijsten van alle aangeschafte boeken.

The 'Historisch Litterarisch Leesgezelschap Clio', a historical and literary society, was re-established in Amsterdam in 1856. The members bought and read recently published books on history and literature. Afterwards, the books were sold in auctions. Among the members were several important inhabitants of Amsterdam. The society was discontinued in 1870. Its activities are represented in the archive, which contains, among other things, lists of all the books that were acquired.

Het archief bevat de persoonlijke nalatenschap van Otto Nathan Cohen, kleinzoon van Leeser Rosenthal, de oorspronkelijke verzamelaar van de huidige Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana. Zijn vader Jacques Cohen (Düsseldorf 1833 - Amsterdam 1881) was in 1862 gehuwd met de dochter van Leeser Rosenthal, Nanny Rosenthal. De stukken in het archief hebben voornamelijk betrekking op het privé-leven van Otto Cohen. Het bevat onder meer foto's, correspondentie, officiële stukken zoals Cohens bewijs van Nederlanderschap, zijn rijbewijzen en stukken in verband met zijn functies en opleidingen. Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog werd Cohen beschuldigd van spionage. Ook hierover is in het archief materiaal aanwezig.

The archive contains the personal estate of Otto Nathan Cohen, grandson of Leeser Rosenthal, the original collector of the present-day Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana. His father, Jacques Cohen (Düsseldorf 1833 - Amsterdam 1881), married Nanny Rosenthal, the daughter of Leeser Rosenthal, in 1862. Most of the papers in the archive relate to Otto Cohen's private life. They include photos, correspondence, official documents such as Cohen's Dutch citizenship papers, his driving licences and papers relating to his jobs and qualifications. Cohen was accused of espionage during the First World War. Material relating to this episode can also be found in the collection.

In 1927 werd door de Joodsche Vereniging voor Amsterdam-Oost Nachaliël de Commissie tot het Aanbieden van een Geschenk aan de Synagoge-Oost benoemd om geld in te zamelen voor een geschenk voor de nieuw te bouwen Synagoge-Oost aan de Linnaeusstraat in Amsterdam. Het archief bestaat uit correspondentie van de commissie, een brochure en enkele stukken met betrekking tot de inwijding van de synagoge op 6 september 1928. Het geschenk kreeg de vorm van gebrandschilderde ramen ontworpen door L. Pinkhof. De leegstaande synagoge is in 1962 gesloopt.

In 1927, Nachaliël, the Jewish Association for Amsterdam East, appointed a Committee to Present a Gift to the East Synagogue. Its task was to collect money for the proposed new East Synagogue on the Linnaeusstraat in Amsterdam. The archive contains correspondence from the committee, a brochure and several papers relating to the consecration of the synagogue on 6 September 1928. The gift took the form of stained glass windows designed by L. Pinkhof. The synagogue, which had fallen into disuse, was demolished in 1962.

De Commissie werd op initiatief van de Vergadering van opperrabbijnen in Nederland op 12 januari 1908 benoemd om, onder voorzitterschap van opperrabbijn Izak Juda Palache (1858-1926), de mogelijkheden te onderzoeken om te komen tot de inrichting van joods middelbaar onderwijs. In het archief bevinden zich de notulen van de commissie en enkele ingekomen brieven.

The Committee was appointed on 12 January 1908, at the initiative of the Conference of Chief Rabbis in the Netherlands. The committee was chaired by Chief Rabbi Izak Juda Palache (1858-1926) and charged with investigating the possibility of establishing Jewish secondary schools. The archive contains the minutes of the committee and several incoming letters.

Uitgeverij Contact is in 1933 opgericht door Gilles Pieter de Neve. Na de oorlog verwierf Contact veel bekendheid met het uitgeven van het Dagboek van Anne Frank. Sinds 1 januari 2012 is Uitgeverij Contact gefuseerd met Amstel Uitgevers en gaat verder onder de naam Uitgeverij Atlas Contact. Het archief bevat vergaderstukken en financiële jaarstukken van Uitgeverij Contact Amsterdam en de Uitgeverij Contact Antwerpen, van Contact Export en van de Hoofdstadboekhandel. Daarnaast bevat het archief recensies en fondslijsten van de beide uitgeverijen over de jaren 1956-1976.

The publishing house Contact was established in 1933 by Gilles Pieter de Neve. After the war the company became well-known by the publishing of the Diary of Anne Frank. On the first of january 2012 Contact merged with the publisher Amstel and the company will continue as publisher Atlas Contact. The archive contains documents for meetings and annual statements of accounts of publisher Contact Amsterdam and publisher Contact Antwerp, of the company Contact Export and of the book store 'Hoofdstadboekhandel' (roughly translated as 'bookstore of the capital'). Besides this, the archive has reviews and catalogues of both publishing businesses dating from 1956-1976.

Jacob Mozes Content werd in 1819 in Amsterdam geboren. Hij behaalde zijn moree-diploma aan het Nederlands-Israëlitisch Seminarium (NIS) in Amsterdam. Na een studie in het buitenland bekleedde hij vele functies in de joodse gemeenschap van Amsterdam. Hij was docent aan het Seminarium en een geliefd rabbijn van de Nederlands-Israëlitische Hoofdsynagoge. Toen het opperrabbinaat vacant was, vervulde hij de functie van 'dajan' van Amsterdam. Hij overleed op tachtigjarige leeftijd en werd begraven in Muiderberg. Het archief bevat vooral officiële documenten betreffende zijn opleiding en enkele ingekomen brieven.

Jacob Mozes Content was born in Amsterdam in 1819. He obtained his moré diploma from the Amsterdam Rabbinical Seminary (NIS) in Amsterdam. After studying abroad, he held many positions in the Jewish congregation of Amsterdam. He taught at the Seminary and was a much-loved rabbi of the Dutch Israelite Main Synagogue. When the post of chief rabbi became vacant, he held the position of dajan of Amsterdam. He died at the age of 80 and was buried in Muiderberg. The archive consists largely of official documents relating to his education, in addition to several incoming letters.

De Collectieve Propaganda van het Nederlandse Boek is sinds 1983 opgedragen aan een daartoe speciaal opgerichte stichting. Het archief van deze stichting (1983-2008) bevat vergaderstukken, stukken over promotionele activiteiten in het algemeen en stukken over door de stichting georganiseerde campagnes. Het promotiemateriaal is in een andere collectie verzameld.

The Collectieve Propaganda van het Nederlandse Boek (Collective Promotion of Dutch Books) has been the responsibility of a dedicated foundation since 1983. The archive of this foundation (1983-2008) contains documents of meetings, items relating to promotional activities in general and to campaigns set up by the foundation. The promotional material is kept in a separate collection.

CREA is het cultureel studentencentrum voor de Universiteit van Amsterdam en sinds enkele jaren ook voor de Hogeschool van Amsterdam. Het archief bevat de neerslag van de activiteiten van CREA. Een grote collectie affiches maakt er deel van uit.

Het archief bestaat uit een verzameling van handgeschreven dictaten en preken van J.G. de Hoop Scheffer, hoogleraar aan het Doopsgezind Seminarium in Amsterdam, uit de periode 1860-1890. Het archief is van groot belang voor de bestudering van de geschiedenis van de doopsgezinde geloofsgemeenschap en hun vorming in de 19e eeuw. Bovendien is het een omvangrijke bron van informatie op het gebied van theologie en de kerkgeschiedenis. Het archief geeft ook inzicht in de geschiedenis en ontwikkeling van dictaat en preek als literaire genres.

The archive comprises a collection of handwritten lecture notes and sermons by J.G. de Hoop Scheffer, professor at the Mennonite Doopsgezind Seminarium Amsterdam, and covers the years 1860 to 1890. It is of major importance for the study of the history of the Mennonite religious community and its development in the 19th century. It is furthermore a comprehensive source of information about theology and church history. The archive also sheds light on the history and development of lecture notes and sermons as literary genres.

De in Krakow geboren Joseph Hirsch Dünner (1833-1911) werd in 1863 benoemd tot rector van het Nederlands-Israëlitisch Seminarium. Gedurende de periode dat Dünner deze functie bekleedde voerde hij in het spoor van de Duitse neo-orthodoxie belangrijke hervormingen door. Naast het religieuze onderwijs werden studenten verplicht ook onderwijs te volgen aan het gymnasium en de universiteit. In 1874 werd Dünner benoemd tot opperrabbijn van het synagogaal ressort Noord-Holland met als belangrijkste gemeente de Nederlands-Israëlitische Hoofdsynagoge in Amsterdam. Deze functie vervulde hij tot zijn dood. Dünners archief bestaat voor het overgrote deel uit ingekomen brieven.

Born in Krakow, Joseph Hirsch Dünner (1833-1911) was appointed rector of the Amsterdam Rabbinical Seminary in 1863. During the time that he held this post, he carried out major reforms in line with German neo-Orthodoxy. In addition to religious education, students were obliged to study at the gymnasium and university. In 1874, Dünner was appointed chief rabbi for the synagogue district of North Holland, whose most important congregation was the Dutch Israelite Main Synagogue in Amsterdam. He held this post until his death. Dünner's archive consists largely of incoming correspondence.

De collectie bestaat vooral uit correspondentie met verschillende circussen waarvoor Van Doveren als perschef werkte en stukken betreffende zijn werkzaamheden als impresario.

Het studentengezelschap Du choc des sentiments et des opinions la verité jaillit et s'échappe en rayons, het oudste Amsterdamse dispuut, werd in 1796 opgericht door studenten rechten. Het reglement van orde is toonaangevend geweest voor de latere disputen. Het dispuut werd opgeheven in 1808. Het archief van Du Choc geeft inzicht in de opzet, werkwijze en doelstelling van dit dispuut. De in het archief opgenomen verhandelingen laten zien waar juridische studenten in de tijd van de Bataafse Republiek en het Koninkrijk Holland zich in het kader van hun studie mee bezighielden.

The student union 'Du Choc des sentiments et des opinions la verité jaillit et s'échappe en rayons' was founded in Amsterdam in 1796 by students of law and is the oldest student union in Amsterdam. For this reason its rules and regulations became an example for future student unions. It was discontinued in 1808. The collection consists of the archive and offers a good insight into its organization, its methods and its aims. The treatises in the archive show what students of law were interested in at the time of the Batavian Republic and the Kingdom of Holland around 1800.

Dick Elffers (Rotterdam 1910 – Amsterdam 1990) was een belangrijk naoorlogs grafisch ontwerper die het vak leerde van aanhangers van de Nieuwe Zakelijkheid. Elffers verzette zich hiertegen en experimenteerde met verschillende vormen en technieken. De veelal getekende en/of geschilderde typografie vormde hierin een belangrijk kenmerk. Zijn expressieve werk werd herkenbaar en gewild bij opdrachtgevers als het Holland Festival, de PTT en het Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. In het archief van Elffers zijn de verschillende opdrachtgevers terug te vinden in de vorm van resultaten van de opdrachten. Daarnaast bestaat het archief ook uit vrij werk van Elffers. Het materiaal in het archief is zeer divers; affiches vormen hier een groot deel van.

Dick Elffers (Rotterdam 1910 – Amsterdam 1990) is known as an important postwar graphic designer, who learned his trade from followers of the art movement New Objectivity. Elffers objected to this style and experimented with various forms and techniques, drawn and/or painted typography characterized his work. His expressive work became recognizable and was wanted by, amongst others, the Holland Festival, the PTT and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. In the archive of Elffers the various clients can be traced in the results of their assignments. His free work is also represented in the archive. The archive is very divers; a big part consists of posters.

Verenigingsarchief van de Vereniging Studiegroep Elspeet. De vereniging is voortgekomen uit de Voortgezette Vakstudie, die tussen 1956 en 1959 georganiseerd werd. Sinds 1959 worden weekend-conferenties georganiseerd, waardoor de leden op de hoogte kunnen blijven van de ontwikkelingen in het boekenvak. Daarnaast hebben de conferenties een belangrijk gezelligheidsaspect.

Archive of the Association Study Group Elspeet. The association grew out of the Voortgezette Vakstudie (Continued professional training), taught between 1956 and 1959. Since 1959, weekend conferences are held, to allow the members to stay abreast of developments in the book trade. Beyond that the conferences have a prominent social aspect.

Felix Falk (1879-1944) was de zoon van rabbijn Joshua Falk uit Fürth. Na het gymnasium studeerde hij filosofie, Duitse literatuur en filologie, Franse geschiedenis en literatuur en kunstgeschiedenis. Hij vluchtte in 1933 voor het opkomend nazisme van Duitsland naar Nederland, waar hij in 1939 een artikel over het Wilhelmus publiceerde. De tekstkritische editie van een 15e-eeuws commentaar op de bijbelboeken Samuel die hij ook graag had willen publiceren is in 1961 door de toenmalige conservator van de Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana, Leo Fuks, postuum uitgegeven. Het archief van Felix Falk bestaat hoofdzakelijk uit aantekeningen van het onderzoek voorafgaand aan de tekstkritische editie van dat commentaar op de bijbelboeken Samuel.

Felix Falk (1879-1944) was the son of Rabbi Joshua Falk from Fürth. After completing his pre-university education, he studied philosophy, German literature and philology, French history and literature and art history. The rise of National Socialism caused him to flee from Germany to the Netherlands in 1933, from where in 1939 he published an article on the Wilhelmus [the Dutch national anthem]. His textual criticism of a 15th-centuary commentary of the biblical Books of Samuel, which he was also keen to publish, was eventually published posthumously in 1961 by the then curator of the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana, Leo Fuks. The archive of Felix Falk consists mainly of research notes in preparation for the textual criticism of this commentary on the Books of Samuel.

M.D. Frank (1913-1995) was uitgever van (natuur)wetenschappelijke boeken voor de Noord-Hollandsche Uitgevers Maatschappij voor hij in 1970 de overstap maakte naar Uitgeverij Elsevier. Zijn archief bestaat voor het grootste deel uit financiële rapporten.

M.D. Frank (1913-1995) was a publisher of scientific and natural scientific books for the Noord-Hollandsche Uitgevers Maatschappij before he switched to Elsevier’s Publishers in 1970. His archive chiefly relates to financial reports.

Jean-Paul Franssens (1938-2003) was schrijver, beeldend kunstenaar en operaregisseur. Het archief bevat stukken betreffende zijn beeldend kunstenaarschap en zijn theaterwerk.
