Franz Wilhelm Rive (1804-1873) studeerde medicijnen te Bonn en te Utrecht. Hij vestigde zijn reputatie tijdens de beruchte cholera-epidemie die Amsterdam in 1832 trof en waarover hij in 1833 een proefschrift schreef. Rive vestigde zich na zijn promotie als medicus in Amsterdam. De collectie bestaat uit ca. 900 gedrukte werken waarvan 230 dateren van voor 1800. Daaronder zijn onder meer de tweede druk van Vesalius De corporis humana en een editie van Galenus uit 1528. De collectie bevat voorts 158, veelal inmiddels zeldzaam geworden 19e-eeuwse werken over kuuroorden. De collectie van Franz Wilhelm Rive geeft in de eerste plaats een beeld van het soort medische werken dat in de 19de eeuw in de belangstelling van artsen stond.

Franz Wilhelm Rive (1804-1873) studied medicine in Bonn and in Utrecht. He earned his reputation during the notorious cholera epidemic that hit Amsterdam in 1832 and about which he wrote his thesis in 1833. After receiving his doctorate Rive established himself as a practitioner in Amsterdam. The collection consists of about 900 printed works of which 230 date from before 1800, such as the second edition of De corporis humana by Vesalius and an edition of Galenus from 1528. Besides this, the collection contains 158 19th century works about health resorts. Many of these works have become quite rare by now. Rive's collection gives an impression of the kind of medical publications in which practitioners were interested in the 19th century.

Leeser Rosenthal (1794-1868) verzamelde zeldzame en belangrijke hebraïca en judaïca op het gebied van religie, filosofie, literatuur, Haskalah, liturgie, mystiek en de geschiedenis van het jodendom. Bij zijn overlijden was zijn verzameling de grootste privécollectie in Duitsland op het gebied van hebraïca en judaïca. Nadat pogingen om de collectie als geheel te verkopen mislukt waren, besloten Rosenthals erfgenamen de collectie aan de gemeente Amsterdam te schenken en deze te laten opnemen in de Universiteitsbibliotheek. In 1880 werden 6000 banden, waaronder 32 handschriften en 12 Hebreeuwse incunabelen, aan de universiteitsbibliotheek overgedragen op voorwaarde dat de boeken 'ten eeuwigen dage bij elkander [zouden] blijven en in een der vertrekken van de Universiteitsbibliotheek bewaard [zouden] worden onder den naam van Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana'.

Leeser Rosenthal (1794-1868) was a collector of rare and important Hebraica and Judaica covering religion, philosophy, literature, Haskalah, liturgy, mysticism and the history of Judaism. At the time of his death his was the largest private collection in Germany in the field of Judaica and Hebraica. After attempts to sell the collection in its entirety failed, Rosenthal's heirs decided to bequeath the collection to the city of Amsterdam and have it incorporated into the University Library. In 1880, 6000 volumes, including 32 manuscripts and 12 Hebrew incunabula, were handed over to the University Library on the condition that the books '[should] stay together in perpetuity and [should] be kept in one of the rooms of the University Library under the name Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana'.

Philip Abraham Samson was een vooraanstaand Surinaams jurist en historicus. De Collectie Samson in de Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana bevat een gedeelte van het materiaal dat door Samson werd verzameld. Zij geeft enerzijds een beeld van de joodse gemeenschap in Suriname in de eerste helft van de 20ste eeuw, anderzijds ook een zeer persoonlijk beeld van de verzamelaar. De collectie bevat daarnaast persoonlijke archivalia van Samson, waaronder correspondentie, teksten van lezingen, radioredes en toneelstukken van zijn hand. Daarnaast bevat de collectie stukken omtrent de Joden-Savanne en de Nederlands-Israëlitische Gemeente in Suriname.

Philip Abraham Samson was a prominent Surinamese lawyer and historian. The Samson Collection in the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana contains a portion of the material that Samson collected. It paints a picture of the Jewish community in Suriname in the first half of the twentieth century, as well as a highly personal picture of the collector. The collection also contains Samson's personal archivalia, including correspondence, the texts of lectures, radio talks and his plays. It also includes papers about the Joden-Savanne and the Dutch Israelite congregation in Suriname.

In 1921 werd door een aantal Oost-Europese joodse immigranten in Amsterdam de Oost-Joodse Arbeiders Cultuurvereniging Sch. An-Ski opgericht. De vereniging streefde naar het 'beleven' van de Jiddische taal en cultuur. Naast het oprichten van een Jiddische bibliotheek werd ook een schooltje opgericht voor Jiddische les aan kinderen en konden verenigingsleden deelnemen aan een toneelgroep en een koor. Daarnaast werden lezingen georganiseerd. Tijdens de Bezetting ging de bibliotheek van de vereniging verloren. Met steun van andere organisaties werd de bibliotheek daarna weer opgebouwd. Toen het ledental in 1953 zozeer was teruggelopen dat het eigen verenigingsgebouw moest worden opgegeven, werd de bibliotheek naar de Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana overgebracht.

In 1921 a group of Eastern-European Jewish immigrants established the Eastern Jewish Workers Cultural Society Sch. An-ski. The society encouraged the 'experience' of Yiddish language and culture. Besides setting up a Yiddish library, a school was opened to teach children Yiddish and society members could join a drama group and a choir and attend lectures. The society's library was lost during the German Occupation but after the war it was rebuilt with support from other organisations. In 1953, when membership had declined to such an extent that the society building had to be relinquished, the library was transferred to the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana.

Een door de uitgever J.R.A. Schouten verzamelde collectie van 670 boeken en tijdschriften betreffende fotografische procédés, fotoapparatuur, inrichting van een fotografisch atelier en dergelijke. Verder tentoonstellingscatalogi, brochures en reclamemateriaal van leveranciers van fotoapparatuur.

A collection of 670 books and periodicals about the technical aspects of photography, photographic equipment, the design of a photographic studio etc. The collection also consists of exhibition catalogues; brochures and advertising material of suppliers of photographic equipment. The collection was brought together by the publisher J.R.A. Schouten.

Het archief van Theo J. Stomps, hoogleraar plantkunde aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam van 1910 tot 1945, bevat correspondentie, stukken over zijn opleiding, aantekeningen van wetenschappelijk onderzoek, materiaal betreffende publicaties en lezingen, eerbewijzen, herinneringen aan buitenlandse studiereizen, stukken over zijn colleges en (buitenlandse) excursies met studenten, alsmede over zijn directeurschap van de Hortus Botanicus. Het geeft inzicht in het werk van een Nederlands botanicus die honderden studenten geneeskunde, farmacie en plant- en dierkunde onderwees en onderzoek deed naar erfelijkheid.

The archive of Theo J. Stomps, full professor at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from 1910 until 1945, contains documents about his education, correspondence, notes of his scientific research, documents concerning publications and lectures, tokens of honour, souvenirs from his travels abroad, documents relating to his lectures for university students, and documents that followed from his directorship of the Hortus Botanicus of the University of Amsterdam. The archive illustrates the work of a Dutch botanist who trained hundreds of students of medicine, pharmacy and biology, and researched the mechanisms of heredity.

De collectie van de Studievereniging voor Psychical Research bevat hoofdzakelijk publicaties op het gebied van parapsychologie, spiritisme en astrologie. Met uitzondering van de tijdschriften dateert de collectie van na 1945.

Unitas Studiosorum Amstelodamensium werd in 1911 opgericht. Deze studentengezelligheidsvereniging beschouwde zich als de opvolger van de Amsterdamsche Studenten Bond (A.S.B.), die in 1901 ophield te bestaan. Omdat men er geen fysieke ontgroening kende, gold U.S.A. als een moderne vereniging. U.S.A. had een gemengd karakter, een lage contributie en een informele sfeer. Na een bloeitijd vanaf 1925 ging het na 1967 snel bergafwaarts. In 1976 was er een succesvolle doorstart. Het archief is onvolledig. Uit de periode 1950-1967 ontbreekt veel. Naast de gebruikelijke correspondentie met zuster- en andere verenigingen, eigen leden, leveranciers, universiteit en gemeente zijn er financiële stukken, merendeels uit de periode 1930-1940. Interessant – hoewel incompleet – zijn de notulen van senaatsvergaderingen en algemene vergaderingen. Daarnaast zijn er foto's, almanakken en periodieken.

Unitas Studiosorum Amstelodamensium was founded in 1911. This student union focused mainly on companionship and considered itself the successor of the Amsterdamsche Studenten Bond, the Amsterdam student association, which ceased to exist in 1901. Since there was no physical rag day Unitas Studiosorum Amstelodamensium is considered to be a modern student union. USA had mixed characteristics, a low membership fee and an informal atmosphere. After flourishing from 1925 onwards it lost its appeal after 1967. It started up again with success in 1976. Unfortunately, the collection is rather incomplete. Much is missing, in particular from the period 1950-1967. In addition to the usual correspondence with other student unions, with their own members, suppliers, the university and the municipality, there are financial documents, mostly from the period 1930-1940. Quite interesting, although incomplete, are the minutes of the meetings of the senate and of other meetings. The collection also contains photographs, almanacs and periodicals.

De collectie omvat in de eerste plaats de bibliotheek van de Verenigde Doopsgezinde Gemeente Amsterdam (VDGA), begonnen in 1680. Deze bibliotheek werd vanaf 1735 gebruikt voor de Doopsgezinde Kweekschool. Zwaartepunten zijn geschriften van voor- en tegenstanders van het revolutionair anabaptisme, vroegreformatorische bijbels, theologische en polemische geschriften van vooraanstaande 17de-eeuwse en 18de-eeuwse leraren en werken over doopsgezinde literatoren en kunstenaars. Daarnaast is er een rijke prentencollectie. In de handschriftencollectie zijn er 16de-eeuwse tractaten van David Joris, de enige overgebleven brief van Menno Simons en 18de- tot 20de-eeuwse preken en collegedictaten. Ten slotte bevat de collectie het Doopsgezind Documentatiecentrum.

This collection contains the library of the Mennonite community in Amsterdam, the 'Doopsgezinde Gemeente Amsterdam' (VDGA), which was begun in 1680. From 1735 onwards the library was used for the Mennonite seminary. The core of the collection consists of documents by advocates and opponents of revolutionary Anabaptism, early reformational bibles, theological and polemical texts by leading 17th and 18th century teachers, documents about literary Mennonites and Mennonite artists. Besides this, there is a rich collection of prints. Finally, manuscripts were collected, for instance of the 16th century David Joris, of 18th to 20th Century lecture notes and the only letter that was left of Menno Simons. The Mennonite Documentation Centre is also included in his collection.

De collectie van de Vereniging van Leraren in het Schoonschrijven bestaat voornamelijk uit gedrukte werken met betrekking tot de kalligrafie en de schrijfkunst in het algemeen.

De collectie Vondeliana van rasverzamelaar A.Th. Hartkamp (1848-1924) vormde de basis van het in 1901 opgerichte Vondel-Museum. De collectie bestaat uit handschriften, gedrukte werken, schilderijen, prenten, portretten, penningen en documentatie over Vondel.

A collection connected to the Dutch writer and poet Joost van den Vondel, put together by A.Th. Hartkamp (1848-1924). It formed the basis of the Vondel-Museum which was founded in 1901. The collection consists of manuscripts, books, paintings, prints, portraits and medallions as well as other documentary material about Vondel.

De collectie Vondeliana van J.H.W. Unger (1861-1904) bestaat voornamelijk uit zeventiende-eeuwse drukken, aangeschaft in 1908 door de Vereniging Het Vondel-Museum.

This collection of books by the Dutch writer and poet Joost van den Vondel was collected by the archivist J.H.W. Unger (1861-1904) and consists mainly of seventeenth century editions. They were purchased by the society 'The Vondel-Museum' in 1908 when Unger's collection was auctioned.

Gérard Walch (1865-1931) was leraar Frans aan de bekende door R.A. Kollewijn opgerichte driejarige hbs te Amsterdam. Hij is in de eerste plaats bekend door zijn Anthologie des poètes français contemporains waarvan de eerste druk verscheen in 1906. Deze populaire bloemlezing werd een aantal keren uitgebreid en herdrukt, voor het laatst in 1959. De collectie bestaat uit ca. 1500 boeken – vrijwel alle poëziebundels van rond 1900. De meeste zijn voorzien van een eigenhandige opdracht van de auteur aan Walch. Sommige van die auteurs werden later wereldberoemd, zoals Jean Cocteau en Marinetti. De collectie als zodanig geeft een beeld van de bibliotheek van een erudiete en geleerde kenner van de Franse letterkunde, de collectie autografen maakt hem uniek in Nederland.

Gérard Walch (1865-1931) was a teacher of French language and literature at a well-known secondary school in Amsterdam. He is chiefly known by his Anthologie des poètes français contemporains, a popular miscellany of contemporary French poetry, which was first published in 1906. It was extended and republished a few times until 1959. The collection consists of about 1500 books – nearly all of which are volumes of poetry from about 1900. Most of them have an inscription in them, written personally by the author to Walch. Some of these authors later became world-famous, such as Jean Cocteau and Marinetti. The collection gives an impression of a library belonging to an erudite authority on French literature. His collection of books with inscription by the author makes him quite unique in the Netherlands.

De collectie bestaat uit stukken afkomstig van of met betrekking tot de dichter, schrijver, journalist en vertaler Johan Willem Frederik Werumeus Buning (1891-1958). De stukken stammen met name uit zijn Amsterdamse jaren en zijn door hem geschonken aan, dan wel verzameld door, zijn vriendin Miep (Jacomina Jacoba Berendina) van 't Hoff-Kools (1893-1945). Het betreft manuscripten, typoscripten en publicaties van literair werk, artikelen en kookboeken. De collectie bevat verder correspondentie, foto's en opdrachtexemplaren van publicaties. Met latere aanvullingen.

This collection contains material by or about the poet, author, journalist and translator Johan Willem Frederik Werumeus Buning (1891-1958). Most of the material dates from the period he lived in Amsterdam and was given to or collected by his girl-friend, Miep van 't Hoff-Kools. The collection consists of manuscripts, typescripts, literary publications, articles and cookery books. Besides this, there is correspondence, there are photographs and there are copies of dedicated publications. Since the donation of the collection to the Special Collections in 2005, material has been added to the collection.

Zij zijn verzameld door Gerardus Frederik Westerman (1807-1890), boekhandelaar/uitgever en directeur en mede-oprichter van het Zoölogisch Genootschap 'Natura Artis Magistra'. De bibliotheek bestaat uit twee delen: het eerste deel (de collectie Westerman 1856) werd in 1857 door Westerman verkocht aan het Genootschap 'Natura Artis Magistra'. Het tweede deel (de collectie Westerman 1890) werd door de erfgenamen na Westermans dood in 1890 aan het Genootschap gelegateerd. De totale bibliotheek omvat boeken op het gebied van de zoölogie van 1631 tot 1888. Hierbij zijn werken van beroemde biologen zoals Petrus Camper en Willem Vrolik.

This collection of books, photographs and paraphernalia was compiled by Gerardus Frederik Westerman (1807-1890). The bookseller and editor Westerman was joint founder and director of the Zoölogisch Genootschap 'Natura Artis Magistra'. This society, the predecessor of the present Artis Zoo in Amsterdam, aimed to stimulate the knowledge of natural history. Therefore not only a zoo and a museum with inanimate specimens was created, but also a library. The library consists of two parts generally referred to as the collection Westerman 1856 and the collection Westerman 1890. The first part was sold by Westerman in 1857 to the society 'Natura Artis Magistra'. The collection Westerman 1890 was bequeathed to the society after his death. Together they contain books in the field of zoology ranging from 1631 to 1888, including works by famous biologists such as Petrus Camper en Willem Vrolik.

Carel Lambertus Wurfbain werd in 1837 te Amsterdam geboren en studeerde daar en in Leiden vanaf 1855 medicijnen. In 1862 promoveerde hij tot doctor in de medicijnen en in 1863 tot doctor in de chirurgie en verloskunde. Hij vestigde zich als medicus in Amsterdam waar hij aan het Buitengasthuis verbonden was. In 1870 werd hij privaat-docent aan het Athenaeum Illustre, de voorloper van de Universiteit van Amsterdam, en in 1873 hoogleraar. De collectie bestaat uit ca. 1200 banden en geeft een goed beeld van de 19e-eeuwse geneeskunde, gezien door de ogen van een vooraanstaand beoefenaar. Wurfbain maakte studiereizen en bezocht congressen, en kocht voortdurend boeken over de nieuwste ontwikkelingen in een periode waarin de geneeskunst grote ontwikkelingen doormaakte. Voor het bestuderen van de receptie van die ontwikkelingen is de collectie van groot belang.

Carel Lambertus Wurfbain was born in Amsterdam in 1837. From 1855 he studied medicine in Amsterdam and in Leiden. In 1862 he received his doctorate in medicine. This was followed by a doctorate in surgery and obstetrics in 1863. He established himself as a doctor in Amsterdam where he worked at the Buitengasthuis, one of the hospitals in Amsterdam. In 1870 he became a teacher at the Athenaeum Illustre, the predecessor of the University of Amsterdam, where he became a professor in 1873. The collection consists of about 1200 publications and gives a good impression of 19th century medicine from the point of view of a leading practitioner. Wurfbain made educational trips and visited medical conferences and continually bought books about the latest developments in medicine in a period of history in which this field of science developed rapidly. The collection is of major importance for studying the reception of those developments.

De wetenschappelijke bibliotheek van de Amsterdamse hoogleraar in de natuurkunde en Nobelprijswinnaar Pieter Zeeman (1865-1943) bevat publicaties en overdrukken op het gebied van elektromagnetisme, optica en atoomfysica, alsmede aan hem uitgereikte eerbewijzen.

Research library of Pieter Zeeman (1865-1943), who was a professor of physics at the University of Amsterdam and Nobel prize winner. It contains publications and offprints in the fields of electromagnetism, optics and molecular physics. Besides this, there are decorations and awards he received.
