Jean-Paul Franssens (1938-2003) was schrijver, beeldend kunstenaar en operaregisseur. Het archief bevat stukken betreffende zijn beeldend kunstenaarschap en zijn theaterwerk. Van zijn complete literaire werk – gedichten, verhalen, romans en autobiografisch werk – is hier materiaal te vinden. Naast dat alles bevat het archief nog brieven, tekeningen, foto's en personalia.

Jean-Paul Franssens (1938-2003) was a writer, visual artist and opera director. The archive contains items relating to his artistic heritage and his theatre work. There are also documents dealing with his entire literary output – poems, stories, novels and autobiographical work. In addition, the archive also contains letters, drawings, photographs and personal documents.

Het Genootschap ter Bevordering van Natuur-, Genees- en Heelkunde werd in 1790 opgericht door de Amsterdamse hoogleraar in de anatomie Andreas Bonn met het doel het wetenschappelijk niveau van de heelmeesters te verhogen. In de loop van de 19e eeuw werden ook geneeskundigen en beoefenaren van de natuurwetenschappen toegelaten tot het lidmaatschap. De nadruk lag op het wetenschappelijke karakter van de medische wetenschappen. In 1855 werd de bibliotheek van het legaat van wijlen J. Monnikhoff aangekocht die de basis zou vormen voor de bibliotheek van het genootschap. Door aankoop en schenkingen groeide de collectie sterk. In 1877 werd de bibliotheek overgedragen aan de Universiteitsbibliotheek. De collectie heeft geen duidelijk eigen gezicht maar bevat wel een groot aantal belangrijke medische werken uit de 15e-19e eeuw.

The Genootschap ter Bevordering van Natuur-, Genees- en Heelkunde (Association for advancement of natural science, medicine and surgery) was founded in 1790 by Andreas Bonn, a professor of anatomy at the University of Amsterdam. His purpose was to raise the level of scientific knowledge of the surgeons. In the course of the nineteenth century general practitioners and practitioners of the natural sciences were admitted as well. The emphasis of the Association was on the scientific character of medicine. In 1855 the library of J. Monnikhoff, which was part of his legacy, was bought. This library was to become the core of the library of the association. By means of purchases and grants the collection increased extensively and was transferred to the University Library. Although the collection does not have a clear individual characteristic, it does contain a large number of medical publications from the 15th to the 19th century.

Het archief van Jacob Israël de Haan bevat correspondentie, persoonlijke aantekeningen, publicaties, collegedictaten, gedichten, foto's en enkele onuitgegeven gedichten van deze joodse schrijver, dichter, journalist en jurist. De Haan werd niet alleen bekend door zijn publicaties, maar ook door zijn betrokkenheid bij zowel het zionisme als de joodse orthodoxie. Hij werd in 1924 in Jeruzalem vermoord. Het archief bestaat uit materiaal dat Jacob Israël de Haan tijdens zijn leven zelf schonk aan de Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana en uit zijn persoonlijke nalatenschap. Ook bevat het archief een aantal aanvullingen van later datum die onder andere te maken hebben met de zorg voor het archief. Het materiaal dateert voornamelijk uit de periode 1904-1924 en is van groot belang omdat het een afspiegeling vormt van het veelzijdige karakter en van de vele bezigheden van De Haan.

The archive of Jacob Israël de Haan contains material from this Jewish writer, poet, journalist and lawyer. In addition to his publications, De Haan was known for his involvement in both Zionism and Jewish orthodoxy. He was murdered in Jerusalem 1924. The archive comprises material that De Haan donated to the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana during his lifetime, as well as items from his personal estate. It also contains several later additions, relating to such matters as the care of the archive. Most of the archive material dates from the period 1904-1924 and is of immense significance, in that it reflects De Haan's versatility and many pursuits. The archive contains correspondence, personal notes, publications, lecture notes, poems and photos, including a few poems that have never been published.

De Vereeniging, later het Dispuut H.A.R.T.I.N.G., werd in 1886 in Amsterdam opgericht door studenten wis- en natuurkunde. De vereniging stelde zich tot doel voordrachten (en kritieken daarop) te organiseren in alle disciplines van de faculteit. Het dispuut werd opgeheven in 1941. Het archief, dat redelijk compleet is, omvat onder andere notulenboeken, voordrachten en jaarverslagen. Het geeft een goed beeld van de activiteiten van H.A.R.T.I.N.G.

The student union, later debating society, H.A.R.T.I.N.G. was founded in 1886 in Amsterdam by students of mathematics and physics. Its aim was to organise lectures and comments on them in all the disciplines of the faculty. It was discontinued in 1941. The collection consists of its archive and includes among other things minute books, lectures and annual reports. It is fairly complete and gives a good insight into the activities of H.A.R.T.I.N.G.

De circuscollectie die K.D. Hartmans bij zijn overlijden in 1963 aan de Universiteitsbibliotheek Amsterdam naliet bestaat uit circa 3300 boeken en een groot aantal affiches, programma's, foto's, prentbriefkaarten, en ander los materiaal. Het losse materiaal is samengevoegd met soortgelijk materiaal dat later door de bibliotheek is verzameld.

The circus collection bequeathed by K.D. Hartmans to the University Library of Amsterdam in 1963 consists of c.3,300 books and a large number of posters, programmes, photographs, postcards and other, individual items. These latter items have been combined with similar material collected by the library at a later time.

Samuel Louis (Sem) Hartz verwierf internationale bekendheid als grafisch ontwerper en kopergraveur. Hij maakte naam met zijn postzegels, waaronder koninginnezegels, zijn bankbiljetten en drukletters. Zijn gehele loopbaan werkte hij voor de beroemde grafische onderneming Joh. Enschedé en Zonen in Haarlem. De collectie bestaat met name uit correspondentie (vooral over de productie van zijn drukletter Linotype Juliana, 1958) en uit drukwerk (boekjes en efemera) van zijn private press, de Tuinwijkpers.

Samuel Lois (Sem) Hartz achieved international fame as a graphic designer and copperplate engraver. He became famous for his stamps, in particular stamps with the queen of the Netherlands, his banknotes and his typefaces. During his entire career he worked at the famous printing firm Joh. Enschedé en Zonen in Haarlem, which dates back to the 18th century. The collection consists mainly of correspondence, in particular about the production of his typeface Linotype Juliana of 1958, and of printed matter, such as books and ephemera from his private printing press, the Tuinwijkpers.

The economist, professor and writer Arnold Heertje (1934-2020) spent a large part of his life collecting books, pamphlets, letters and manuscripts in the field of economics. The collection now in the Allard Pierson is limited to printed books and pamphlets and contains circa 3,500 items. The Heertje library is known worldwide as one of the foremost collections in the field of economic history. The works of all major economic writers are here represented, often in rare first editions, or copies annotated by the author or other major scientists, such as the first edition of Mandeville’s Fable of the Bees, Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations, David Ricardo’s Principles of Political Economy and Karl Marx’ Das Kapital. After Heertje’s death the library was managed by the Stichting tot Beheer van de Heertje Bibliotheek.

Arnold Heertje (1934-2020), econoom, hoogleraar en publicist, besteedde een groot deel van zijn leven aan het verzamelen van boeken, pamfletten, brieven en manuscripten op het gebied van de economie. De collectie die zich nu in het Allard Pierson bevindt bevat alleen de gedrukte boeken en pamfletten en bestaat uit circa 3500 items. De Heertje-bibliotheek staat wereldwijd bekend als een van de belangrijkste op het terrein van de economische geschiedenis. De werken van alle grote economische schrijvers zijn erin vertegenwoordigd, vaak in zeldzame eerste edities of voorzien van aantekeningen van de auteur of van andere belangrijke wetenschappers, zoals de eerste druk van Mandeville’s Fable of the Bees, Adam Smith’s The wealth of nations, David Ricardo’s Principles of political economy en Karl Marx’ Das Kapital. Na de dood van Heertje werd de bibliotheek beheerd door de Stichting tot Beheer van de Heertje Bibliotheek.

De collectie bevat ruim 120 Nederlandse drukken uit de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw, die op het moment van schenking in 2022 niet in de Short Title Catalogue Netherlands (STCN) staan, en waarvan in Nederland ook buiten de STCN geen exemplaar in publiek bezit aangewezen kon worden. Ze zijn in een periode van enkele jaren bijeen verzameld door Willem Heijting.

The collection contains over 120 Dutch printed books from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, which at the time they were donated in 2022 were not included in the Short Title Catalogue Netherlands (STCN), nor were they found to feature in Dutch public collections not yet described by the STCN. They were collected by Willem Heijting over a few years’ time.

De Hersteld Evangelisch Lutherse Gemeente te Amsterdam ontstond in 1791 uit de Evangelisch Lutherse Kerk, waar ze in 1951 uiteindelijk weer in opging. De Hersteld Evangelisch Lutherse Gemeente wilde een Bijbelse theologie invoeren die vrij was van dogmatische traditie. De bibliotheek bestaat voornamelijk uit werken op het gebied van protestantse theologie, met nadruk op het lutheranisme.

The Hersteld Evangelisch Lutherse Gemeente (restored evangelical Lutheran community) of Amsterdam arose from the Evangelisch Lutherse Kerk (Evangelical Lutheran Church) in 1791. It was eventually reintegrated into this church in 1951. The Hersteld Evangelisch Lutherse Gemeente sought to introduce a biblical theology that was not bound by dogmatic tradition. The library mainly consists of works in the field of Protestant theology, with an emphasis on Lutheranism.

De collectie Boudewijn Ietswaart biedt inzicht in het werk van een freelance grafisch ontwerper en illustrator. Daarnaast behoort zijn getekende belettering tot de top van dit genre in de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw.

The Boudewijn Ietswaart collection throws light on the work of a freelance graphic designer and illustrator. His hand lettering is among the best of the genre in the second half of the twentieth century.

De collectie bestaat uit materiaal betreffende de drukinkt en de meerkleurendruk in de 20ste eeuw in Nederland en in het buitenland (Duitsland, Verenigde Staten en Groot-Brittannië). Het grootste deel van de collectie bevat zogenoemde inktmonsters (ook kleurboeken of proefboeken genoemd). Deze fungeerden als hulpmiddel voor drukkers en hun opdrachtgevers tijdens het kiezen van kleuren voor het uitvoeren van de offset- en boekdrukwerken. De collectie biedt een breed inzicht in de geschiedenis en ontwikkeling van de drukinkt-industrie in de 20ste eeuw. Bovendien geeft ze een omvangrijk overzicht van de inktfabrikanten in deze periode.

De bibliotheek bestaat uit werken op het gebied van de protestantse theologie en kerkgeschiedenis bijeengebracht ten behoeve van de hervormde predikantenopleiding.

The library consists of works relating to Protestant theology and church history, collected to serve the ministerial training programme of the Dutch reformed church.

Het Koninklijk Nederlands Aardrijkskundig Genootschap (KNAG) zette zich vanaf 1873 in om de belangstelling in en de kennis van de aardrijkskunde te vergroten. Hiertoe werden enkele verzamelingen aangelegd, waaronder een bibliotheek en een collectie kaarten en atlassen. Beide werden in 1880 in beheer gegeven aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. De collectie beslaat in principe het gehele terrein van de geografie en cartografie. Het accent ligt op Nederland en de (voormalige) overzeese gebiedsdelen. Onder de kaarten zijn vele hoogtepunten uit de geschiedenis van de cartografie vanaf de zestiende eeuw.

From 1873 onwards the Royal Dutch Geographical Society (KNAG) dedicated itself to promoting the interest in and the knowledge of geography. In order to do this, a number of collections were started, including a library and a collection of maps and atlases. In 1880 both were given to the University of Amsterdam to manage. The collection essentially covers the entire scope of geography and map-making. The emphasis is on the Netherlands and (former) overseas territories. The collection of maps contains many highlights in the history of map-making from the sixteenth century onwards.
