De ABOP (Algemene Bond voor Onderwijzend Personeel, intussen Algemene Onderwijsbond) is een vakbond voor onderwijsgevenden van de openbare zuil. De bibliotheek van de ABOP is opgebouwd tussen 1905 en 1970 en telt ruim 10.000 banden op het gebied van onderwijs en jeugdwelzijn. Het belang van de bibliotheek is gelegen in de brede oriëntatie op het Nederlandse onderwijs, met name het onderwijsbeleid na 1945. Psychologie maakt een kwart van de collectie uit.

The 'Algemene Bond voor Onderwijzend Personeel' (ABOP), nowadays 'Algemene Onderwijsbond', is a union for teachers at nondenominational schools. Its library was formed between 1905 and 1970 and includes more than 10,000 volumes concerning education and youth welfare. The significance of the library lies mainly in its broad focus on Dutch education. Approximately a fourth of the collection consists of works on psychology.

De archivaris en verzamelaar A.M. van de Waal (1890-1968) bracht tijdens zijn leven de grootste particuliere verzameling over Amsterdam bijeen. De collectie bestaat uit boeken, brochures, kaarten, plattegronden, prenten, foto's, prentbriefkaarten en krantenknipsels betreffende Amsterdam uit de periode ca. 1600-1970.

During his life the archivist and private collector A.M. van de Waal (1890-1968) compiled the largest private collection about Amsterdam. It consists of books, maps, floor plans, prints, photographs, picture postcards, brochures and newspaper clippings from the period ranging between about 1600 and 1970.

De Amsterdamsche Studenten Bond, een gezelligheidsvereniging, werd in 1885 opgericht als alternatief voor het Amsterdamsch Studenten Corps (A.S.C.). Dat stond als elitair en duur te boek. Net als het A.S.C. kende de A.S.B. subverenigingen en disputen. De algemene teruggang in de belangstelling voor gezelligheidsverenigingen betekende voor de A.S.B. in 1901 het einde. Het archief is onvolledig. Het bevat veel financiële stukken maar geen correspondentie; notulen van het collegium (bestuur) zijn er slechts van één studiejaar. Daarnaast zijn er een serie almanakken en een periodiek, beide uitgaven van de A.S.B.

The Amsterdamsche Studenten Bond (Amsterdam student association), a student union mainly focusing on companionship, was founded in 1885 as an alternative choice to the Amsterdamsche Studenten Corps (Amsterdam student union), which was known to be elitist and expensive. Just like the ASC the Amsterdamsche Studenten Bond incorporated debating societies and minor student unions. The general decrease of interest in student unions focusing on companionship meant an end to its existence in 1901. The archive is incomplete. It contains a lot of financial documents, but no correspondence. There is only one year of minutes of the board. Besides this, there is a series of almanacs and a periodical, both of which were published by the Amsterdamsche Studenten Bond.

De collectie Armeense boeken bevat circa 135 banden, afkomstig van de, in het begin van de negentiende eeuw opgeheven, Armeense geloofsgemeenschap. De collectie bevat veel boeken die te Amsterdam zijn gedrukt, maar ook boeken uit Armenië zelf en boeken die elders zijn uitgegeven door de wijd verspreide Armeense gemeenschappen. De collectie geeft een goed beeld van de Armeense typografie en van de invloed die de Amsterdamse uitgaven internationaal hebben gehad in de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw.

The collection of Armenian books consists of approximately 135 publications, originating from the Armenian religious community which was discontinued at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The collection contains a lot of books which were printed in Amsterdam, but also books from Armenia itself and books which were published in other wide spread Armenian communities. The collection offers a good impression of Armenian typography and of the influence the publications from Amsterdam had internationally in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

De Artis Bibliotheek heeft haar ontstaan te danken aan de oprichting van het Zoölogisch Genootschap Natura Artis Magistra te Amsterdam in 1838, ter bevordering van de kennis van de natuurlijke historie. Daartoe behoorde het inrichten van een wetenschappelijke boeken- en tijdschriftencollectie. In 1939 ging de bibliotheek over naar de gemeente Amsterdam, die haar toevertrouwde aan de universiteit. De Artis Bibliotheek bevat materiaal vanaf de vijftiende eeuw tot heden, waaronder boeken en tijdschriften op het gebied van biologie en zoölogie met als zwaartepunten een grote Linnaeus- en Darwin-collectie, reis- en landbeschrijvingen, alle literatuur over Artis en veel over moderne natuurstudie. De bibliotheek bevat verder een enorme collectie prenten met afbeeldingen van dieren (de Iconographia Zoologica), archieven van tal van bekende biologen uit de negentiende en twintigste eeuw en museale objecten. Ten slotte zijn er vele bijzondere exemplaren – vaak op zeer groot formaat en niet zelden met de hand ingekleurd – van natuurhistorische werken waarvan geen tweede exemplaar in Nederland bekend is.

The Artis Library owes its existence to the foundation of the zoological society Natura Artis Magistra in Amsterdam in 1838. This society was founded in order to increase the knowledge of natural history. Therefore, the society founded an academic library containing books and periodicals. In 1939 this library came into hands of the municipality of Amsterdam, which in its turn entrusted it to the university. The Artis Bibliotheek contains material from the fifteenth century up to the present, including books and periodicals on biology and zoology. Highlights in the collection are a large amount of material written by Linnaeus and by Darwin, travel accounts and regional geology, all the literature on Artis itself and much about the present-day study of nature. Besides this, the library contains a large collection of prints with pictures of animals (the 'Iconographia Zoologica'), archives of many well-known biologists from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and museum objects. Finally, there are many works of natural history – often quite large and coloured by hand – of which second specimens are not known to exist in The Netherlands.

Collectie vulgairgriekse en religieuze werken (1551-1799) bijeengebracht door de Amsterdamse bibliofiel Paul Auerbach (1897-1944). De collectie bevat een boekerij op het gebied van de Byzantinologie en het Nieuwgrieks, met onder andere vroege drukken in het klassiek Grieks en een collectie Nieuwgriekse drukken uit de zestiende tot achttiende eeuw en postincunabelen, waarvan een Griekse vertaling van de Catechismus van Calvijn uit 1551 het oudste is. Behalve religieuze werken en vertalingen daarvan uit de zeventiende eeuw, zijn er ook niet-religieuze werken. Deze zijn zeer gemengd en bevatten naast bellettrie ook historische en filologische werken zoals woordenboeken en grammatica's.

A collection of popular Greek and religious Greek publications (1551-1799) brought together by the Amsterdam bibliophile Paul Auerbach (1897-1944). The collection includes a library in the field of Byzantinology and modern Greek, with, among other things, early prints in classical Greek and a collection of modern Greek prints from the sixteenth to eighteenth century. The collection also includes post-incunabula, the oldest of which is a Greek translation of Calvin's Catechism dating from 1551. Apart from religous publications and translations of these from the seventeenth century, there are also nonreligious works. These are very miscellaneous and range from literature to historical and philological publications, such as dictionaries and grammar books.

Mieke Bal (1946-) studeerde Frans aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam en promoveerde in 1977 aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Als grondlegger van de narratologie publiceerde zij in het Frans Narratologie (1977), een nieuwe theorie die de Literatuurwetenschap voorgoed veranderde. Haar boek De theorie van vertellen en verhalen (1978) is in vele talen vertaald. Mieke Bal bestudeert culturele objecten altijd vanuit meerdere disciplines en was een pionier van de Cultural Analysis. Vrouwenstudies/genderstudies stond aan de bakermat van interdisciplinair onderzoek. Mieke Bal, feministe en groot pleitbezorger van interdisciplinariteit richtte in 1993 de Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) op. De collectie is geen verzamelaarscollectie, de boeken waren nodig om onderzoek te doen. Het geheel is een perfecte afspiegeling van het interdisciplinaire en internationale karakter van haar wetenschappelijke carrière.

Mieke Bal (1946-) studied French at the University of Amsterdam and she took her doctoral degree in 1977 at the University of Utrecht. As a founder of the narratology she published, in French, Narratologie (1977), a new theory which changed the literary theory permanently. Her book De theorie van vertellen en verhalen (1978) has been translated in multiple languages. Mieke Bal researches cultural objects always from multiple disciplines and she was a pioneer of the Cultural Analysis. Women's studies/genderstudies stood at the cradle of interdisciplinary research. Mieke Bal, feminist and great advocate of interdisciplinarity, founded the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) in 1993. The collection is not a collector's collection, the books were necessary to do research. The whole is a perfect reflection of the interdisciplinarity and international character of her scientific career.

De collectie is door de eeuwen heen in hoofdzaak opgebouwd uit de bibliotheken van pastoors van het Begijnhof onder wie D. van der Mye, S. Coetenburgh, N.J.A. Steins Bisschop en B.H. Klönne. De collectie is van belang voor onderzoek naar onderwerpen als het Mirakel van Amsterdam, de geschiedenis van het Begijnhof en Amsterdamse kerkmuziek. Ook de geschiedenis van de Amsterdamse katholieken, het Jansenisme en de April-beweging zijn goed vertegenwoordigd. In de collectie bevinden zich diverse unieke en zeldzame stukken.

The library of the Begijnhof (Beguinage) in Amsterdam contains manuscripts and books of the 15th to 20th centuries. The collection was formed mainly by the priests of the Begijnhof, such as D. van der Mye, S. Coetenburgh, N.J.A. Steins Bisschop and B.H. Klönne. The collection is important for research into various topics, such as the Miracle of Amsterdam, the history of the Beguinage and church music in Amsterdam. Other well represented topics are the history of Roman Catholics in Amsterdam, Jansenism and the violent protestant response to the restoration of the episcopal hierarchy in April of 1853. The collection contains a number of unique and rare documents.

Jan Willem Bezemer (1921-2000) was historicus en hoogleraar-directeur van het Oost-Europa Instituut van 1957-1986. Parallel aan de collectievorming van het Rusland-Instituut en later het Oost-Europa Instituut heeft Bezemer zijn wetenschappelijke privécollectie opgebouwd met boeken, seriewerken en tijdschriften op het gebied van de geschiedenis, economie, landbouw, het recht, etnografie, geografie, kunst, literatuur, filosofie, politicologie, religie en sociologie van Rusland, de Sovjet-Unie en de deelrepublieken. De publicaties bestaan uit de volgende soorten materiaal: bellettrie, naslagwerken, wetenschappelijke studies, bibliografieën, biografieën, atlassen, plaatwerken en statistisch materiaal.De collectie beslaat een breed tijdsbestek, de nadruk ligt op de periode 1918-1991. Het is een degelijke wetenschappelijke collectie die inzicht geeft in de geschiedenis van genoemde regio’s in die periode en tevens de collectie van het Oost-Europa Instituut aanvult.

Het Rijksdeel Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica (BPH) is een unieke verzameling van circa 4400 zeldzame manuscripten en gedrukte werken over de hermetische traditie. Dit is een verzamelnaam voor filosofisch-religieuze en praktisch-esoterische teksten die zijn ontstaan in het hellenistische Egypte, en die hun ingang vonden in zowel de joodse, christelijke als Arabische cultuur. De bibliotheek is ontstaan uit de privécollectie van de Amsterdamse ondernemer Joost Ritman.

The Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica State collection is a unique collection of c. 4,400 rare manuscripts and printed works relating to the hermetic tradition. This is an umbrella term for a number of philosophical and religious and esoteric and practical texts that originated in Hellenistic Egypt and were assimilated into Jewish, Christian and Arabic traditions. The Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica grew out of the private collection of Amsterdam businessman Joost Ritman.

De Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana herbergt de verzameling joodse boeken van de Bijzondere Collecties. De basis voor de bibliotheek werd gelegd door Leeser Rosenthal (Nasielsk 1794 - Hannover 1868), die bij zijn dood een collectie naliet van zo'n 6.000 banden. In de jaren na zijn dood hebben zijn erven tevergeefs getracht de collectie te verkopen. Uiteindelijk heeft de familie de bibliotheek in 1880 aan de gemeente Amsterdam geschonken. Tot de Eerste Wereldoorlog werd de uitbreiding van de bibliotheek gefinancierd uit fondsen die door de familie ter beschikking werden gesteld; daarna nam de Universiteitsbibliotheek de kosten op zich. Eenmaal in Amsterdam ontwikkelde de collectie zich van een Duitse Verlichtingsbibliotheek tot een algemene bibliotheek over de joodse geschiedenis en cultuur, met werken in alle talen waarvan joden zich in de loop der eeuwen hebben bediend. De bibliotheek omvat inmiddels ongeveer 100.000 werken. In de loop van de 130 jaar die de bibliotheek zich in de Universiteitsbibliotheek van Amsterdam bevindt, is de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse Jodendom het belangrijkste zwaartepunt geworden.

The Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana houses the Special Collections Department's Jewish book collection. The basis of the library was formed by the collection of Leeser Rosenthal (Nasielsk 1794 - Hanover 1868), which amounted to 6,000 volumes at the time of his death. In the years following his death, his heirs tried – unsuccessfully – to sell the collection. The family finally bequeathed the library to the City of Amsterdam in 1880. Up until the First World War, the library was expanded on the basis of funds made available by the family; after this time the University bore the costs itself. From being a library of German enlightenment, once it arrived in Amsterdam the Rosenthaliana developed into a general library of Jewish history and culture, with works in every language used by Jews throughout the centuries. By now the library contains around 100,000 works. In the 130 years that the library has been in Amsterdam, its main focus has become the history of Dutch Jewry.

A collection of books by the Italian printer and typecutter Giambattista Bodoni (1740-1813), formerly owned by the Leiden book printer and publisher Albertus Willem Sijthoff (1829-1913). Editions by Bodoni are among the highlights of eighteenth-century book typography. This collection offers a comprehensive overview of Bodoni’s career as a typecutter and book printer.

De fotocollectie is afkomstig van Boekblad, nieuwsblad voor het boekenvak, en bestaat voor het grootste gedeelte uit zwart-witfoto’s en enkele kleurenfoto’s in diverse formaten. Deze zijn gebruikt in het tijdschrift tussen 1980 en 2007. Op de foto’s zijn Nederlandse en internationale auteurs, boekverkopers en andere personen uit het boekenvak te zien. Ook boekhandels, literaire evenementen in binnen- en buitenland en prijsuitreikingen zijn afgebeeld. Het belang van de collectie betreft de beeldvorming in foto’s van de hele keten van boekproductie, boekpromotie en boekdistributie.

The photography collection is derived from Boekblad, a Dutch book trade newspaper, and largely consists of black and white photographs and a number of colour photographs in various formats that were featured in the periodical between 1980 and 2007. The photos show authors from the Netherlands and abroad, booksellers and other people active in the book trade. Others show bookshops, national and international literary events and award ceremonies. The collection’s significance lies in the range of images that capture the process from book production and promotion to book distribution.

Salomon Alfred Bruijning groeide op in Suriname, als pleegzoon van de bekende Surinaamse jurist en historicus Philip Abraham Samson (1902-1966) en Hanna Josephine Samuels (1905-1995), de zuster van zijn moeder. In hetzelfde huis woonde een andere zuster, Juliette Erna Samuels (1902-1976). Salomon Alfred Bruijning is zeer betrokken bij de nagedachtenis van zijn oom Ph.A. Samson en zet zich in voor het behoud van diens intellectuele erfgoed. De collectie bestaat uit stukken die komen uit de nalatenschappen van Philip Abraham Samson, Juliette Erna Samuels, Estelle Samuels en uit stukken afkomstig van S.A. Bruijning zelf. De collectie bevat persoonlijke documenten, foto's en stukken betreffende Suriname in het algemeen, de Staten van Suriname en de joodse gemeenschap van Suriname.

Salomon Alfred Bruijning grew up in Suriname, as the foster son of the well-known Surinamese jurist and historian Philip Abraham Samson (1902-1966) and Hanna Josephine Samuels (1905-1995), a sister of Bruijning's mother. Another of his mother's sisters, Juliette Erna Samuels (1902-1976), lived in the same house. Salomon Alfred Bruijning is very closely involved in keeping the memory of his uncle P.A. Samson alive and has dedicated himself to the preservation of his intellectual heritage. The collection consists of items from the estate of Philip Abraham Samson, Juliette Erna Samuels and Estelle Samuels as well as items from S.A. Bruijning himself. The collection contains personal documents, photographs and items about Suriname in general, the States of Suriname and the Jewish community in Suriname.

De collectie S. van der Burg bestaat uit werken betreffende Friesland en de Friese taal en letterkunde, en onderwijs in de Friese taal. Daarnaast bevat de collectie archivalia van verenigingen actief op het terrein van de Friese taal.

The collection brought together by S. van der Burg consists of works relating to Friesland, the Frisian language and literature as well as teaching Frisian. The collection also contains archival materials of societies devoted to the Frisian language.

De collectie met materiaal vanaf de zeventiende tot de vroege twintigste eeuw omvat onder andere redes en oraties van hoogleraren, studentenalmanakken, portretprenten en topografische prenten, penningen en insignes, archiefstukken, documenten, brochures, wetten, tijdschriften, zegels en menu's. Deze collectie heeft aan de basis gelegen van de in 1923 opgerichte historische verzameling van de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

In 1883 the debating society of students of history, CLIO, started collecting objects from the history of higher education in Amsterdam in the broadest sense of the word. The collection contains material from the seventeenth century until the early twentieth century. Among other things, there are speeches and inaugural lectures, student almanacs, portraits and topographic pictures, medals and badges, archival documents, brochures, laws, periodicals, stamps and menus. The collection was the starting-point of the historical collection of the University of Amsterdam which was started in 1923.

De collectie uit Moskou gerecupereerde boeken is een samenstelling van boeken die gedurende de Tweede Wereldoorlog vanuit Nederland werden geplunderd. De boeken werden in de nadagen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog door de nazi’s naar een opslag in Ratibor gebracht. Na de oorlog werden de boeken als oorlogsbuit meegenomen door de Sovjets, waarna de boeken in respectievelijk Minsk en Moskou verbleven. In 1992 werden de boeken vanuit Moskou gerecupereerd naar Nederland. De collectie is een allerhande verzameling van romans, dichtbundels en historische werken uit voornamelijk 1900-1940. Het belang van deze collectie ligt in de historische reis die deze boeken hebben meegemaakt.

The collection of books recovered from Moscow consists of a combination of books that were looted from the Netherlands during WWII. Towards the end of the war, the Nazis had taken them to a storage facility in Racibórz; after the war they were seized by the Soviets as war trophy, to be stored in respectively Minsk and Moscow. The books were returned to the Netherlands from Moscow in 1992. The collection consists of a mix of novels, poetry volumes and historical works mainly from 1900-1940. The significance of this collection lies in the historical journey of these books.
