Collectie van de Amsterdamse hoogleraar in de farmacie, Cornelia Gerarda van Arkel (1902-1980), bestaande uit overdrukken van al haar artikelen, publicaties die in verband staan met haar academische carrière, foto's en enkele memorabilia.

This collection was formed by Cornelia Gerarda van Arkel (1902-1980), a professor of pharmacy at the University of Amsterdam. It consists of offprints of her articles, publications concerning her academic career, photographs and a few memorabilia.

De Artis Bibliotheek heeft haar ontstaan te danken aan de oprichting van het Zoölogisch Genootschap Natura Artis Magistra te Amsterdam in 1838, ter bevordering van de kennis van de natuurlijke historie. Daartoe behoorde het inrichten van een wetenschappelijke boeken- en tijdschriftencollectie. In 1939 ging de bibliotheek over naar de gemeente Amsterdam, die haar toevertrouwde aan de universiteit. De Artis Bibliotheek bevat materiaal vanaf de vijftiende eeuw tot heden, waaronder boeken en tijdschriften op het gebied van biologie en zoölogie met als zwaartepunten een grote Linnaeus- en Darwin-collectie, reis- en landbeschrijvingen, alle literatuur over Artis en veel over moderne natuurstudie. De bibliotheek bevat verder een enorme collectie prenten met afbeeldingen van dieren (de Iconographia Zoologica), archieven van tal van bekende biologen uit de negentiende en twintigste eeuw en museale objecten. Ten slotte zijn er vele bijzondere exemplaren – vaak op zeer groot formaat en niet zelden met de hand ingekleurd – van natuurhistorische werken waarvan geen tweede exemplaar in Nederland bekend is.

The Artis Library owes its existence to the foundation of the zoological society Natura Artis Magistra in Amsterdam in 1838. This society was founded in order to increase the knowledge of natural history. Therefore, the society founded an academic library containing books and periodicals. In 1939 this library came into hands of the municipality of Amsterdam, which in its turn entrusted it to the university. The Artis Bibliotheek contains material from the fifteenth century up to the present, including books and periodicals on biology and zoology. Highlights in the collection are a large amount of material written by Linnaeus and by Darwin, travel accounts and regional geology, all the literature on Artis itself and much about the present-day study of nature. Besides this, the library contains a large collection of prints with pictures of animals (the 'Iconographia Zoologica'), archives of many well-known biologists from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and museum objects. Finally, there are many works of natural history – often quite large and coloured by hand – of which second specimens are not known to exist in The Netherlands.

Anthonij Michiel Cornelis van Asch van Wijck (1808-1874), rechter te Utrecht, was een religieus en politiek gemotiveerd voorvechter in de Réveilbeweging en behoorde tot de kring rond Guillaume Groen van Prinsterer. Zijn archief bevat onder andere materiaal over christelijke kiesverenigingen en brieven van Groen van Prinsterer en Abraham Capadose.

Anthonij Michiel Cornelis van Asch van Wijck (1808-1874), a judge in Utrecht, was a religiously and politically motivated champion of the Réveil movement and belonged to the circle around the Reformed politician and historian Guillaume Groen van Prinsterer. His archive includes materials on Christian electoral associations and letters by Groen van Prinsterer and physician and Calvinist writer Abraham Capadose.

Balans was een rijk met foto's van beeldende kunst geïllustreerd literair jaarboek. Het verscheen één keer, in 1931. De samenstellers waren D.A.M. Binnendijk, Menno ter Braak, C.J. Kelk, Lou Lichtveld en Henrik Scholte. Het redactiearchief bevat voornamelijk correspondentie met de samenstellers van het jaarboek.

Balans was a richly illustrated literary yearbook featuring photographs of visual arts objects. It only appeared once, in 1931. The compilers were D.A.M. Binnendijk, Menno ter Braak, C.J. Kelk, Lou Lichtveld and Henrik Scholte. The editorial archive mainly consists of correspondence between the compilers of the yearbook.

De bibliotheek van het Begijnhof Amsterdam bevat handschriften en drukken van de 15e tot de 20e eeuw. De collectie is door de eeuwen heen in hoofdzaak opgebouwd uit de bibliotheken van pastoors van het Begijnhof onder wie D. van der Mye, S. Coetenburgh, N.J.A. Steins Bisschop en B.H. Klönne. De collectie is van belang voor onderzoek naar onderwerpen als het Mirakel van Amsterdam, de geschiedenis van het Begijnhof en Amsterdamse kerkmuziek. Ook de geschiedenis van de Amsterdamse katholieken, het Jansenisme en de April-beweging zijn goed vertegenwoordigd. In de collectie bevinden zich diverse unieke en zeldzame stukken.

The library of the Begijnhof (Beguinage) in Amsterdam contains manuscripts and books of the 15th to 20th centuries. The collection was formed mainly by the priests of the Begijnhof, such as D. van der Mye, S. Coetenburgh, N.J.A. Steins Bisschop and B.H. Klönne. The collection is important for research into various topics, such as the Miracle of Amsterdam, the history of the Beguinage and church music in Amsterdam. Other well represented topics are the history of Roman Catholics in Amsterdam, Jansenism and the violent protestant response to the restoration of the episcopal hierarchy in April of 1853. The collection contains a number of unique and rare documents.

Cornelis Bellaar Spruyt werd in 1877 aangesteld als hoogleraar in de filosofie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Hij ontwikkelde zich tot een aanhanger van Kant. Daarnaast toonde hij een sterke betrokkenheid bij zaken van nationaal belang, zoals uitbreiding van het kiesrecht en algemene dienstplicht. Als secretaris van de Nederlandsch Zuid-Afrikaansche Vereeniging zette hij zich in voor de Boeren in Zuid-Afrika. Het archief bevat een complete weerslag van de activiteiten van C. Bellaar Spruyt vanaf zijn studiejaren tot zijn overlijden, zowel wat betreft zijn studie, zijn hoogleraarschap als zijn politieke activiteiten.

Cornelis Bellaar Spruyt was appointed professor of philosophy at the University of Amsterdam in 1877. He was an adherent of the philosophy of Immanuel Kant and expressed a strong interest in matters of national importance, such as the extension of the right to vote and compulsory military service. In his position as secretary of the Dutch South-African Association he labored for the South-African Boers. The archive reflects his activities very accurately and completely from the time he started studying until his death in 1901, with regard to his study and professorship as well as in his political activities.

Het archief van de boekwinkel, de drukkerij/uitgeverij, het veilinghuis, de leesbibliotheek en de kunstzaal te Middelburg (1801-1998) bevat de negentiende-eeuwse boekhouding van boekhandel en veilinghuis, boekhandelscatalogi, correspondentie, auteurscontracten, onkostenberekeningen, prospectussen, documentatie en een manuscript. Het archief biedt inzicht in de organisatie van een vooraanstaande negentiende-eeuwse provinciale boekhandel, zowel waar het de relaties met collega's als met particuliere klanten betreft.

This is an archive of a combined bookshop, printing office, publisher, auction house, reading room and art gallery in Middelburg that flourished from 1801 to 1998. It contains the accounting of the bookshop and the auction house, as well as booksellers' catalogues, correspondence, contracts with authors, estimates of expenses, prospectuses, documentation and a manuscript. Most items date from the nineteenth century. The archive offers insight into the organization of a prominent regional bookseller, both in his relations with other booksellers and with private customers.

Hans den Besten (1948-2010) was een Nederlandse taalwetenschapper verbonden aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Met name voor het onderzoek van Westgermaanse talen is zijn werk van invloed geweest. De collectie bestaat uit vakliteratuur, woordenboeken en een paar archiefstukken, die betrekking hebben op een studie naar een creoolse taalvariant van het Nederlands op de voormalige Deense Antillen.

Hans den Besten (1948-2010) was a Dutch linguist at the University of Amsterdam. His work was especially influential for the research of West-Germanic languages. The collection consists of professional literature, dictionaries and a few archival documents relating to the study of a Creole variety of Dutch spoken in the former Danish West Indies.

Naphtali Herz van Biema (1836-1901), een kleinzoon van de orthodox-joodse Jacob Meier Lehren (1793-1861), was zijn hele leven toegewijd aan de studie van de Hebreeuwse bibliografie en joodse boekwetenschap. In 1858 zocht Van Biema per brief contact met Moritz Steinschneider (1816-1907), een van de grote joodse bibliografen en geleerden van de 19e eeuw. Hij bood Steinschneider zijn medewerking en een artikel aan voor het in datzelfde jaar door Steinschneider opgerichte tijdschrift 'Hamazkir, Zeitschrift für hebräische Bibliographie'. Dit is het begin van een uitgebreide correspondentie betreffende bibliografie en boekwetenschap. Van deze correspondentie worden 69 brieven van N.H. van Biema en 24 brieven van M. Steinschneider bij de Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana bewaard.

Throughout his life Naphtali Herz van Biema (1836-1901), a grandson of the orthodox Jewish Jacob Meier Lehren (1793-1861), remained dedicated to the study of Hebrew bibliography and Jewish book studies. In 1858 Van Biema wrote a letter to Moritz Steinschneider (1816-1907), one of the great Jewish bibliographers and scholars of the nineteenth century. He offered his services to Steinschneider, as well as an article for the magazine Hamazkir, Zeitschrift für hebräische Bibliographie which Steinschneider founded in that same year. This was the beginning of an extensive correspondence concerning bibliography and bibliology. Of this correspondence, 69 letters from N.H. van Biema and 24 letters from M. Steinschneider are held in the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana.

Henriette Boas (1911-2001) was classicus en schrijfster. In de periode 1940-1947 werkte ze in Londen als vertaalster en omroepster voor de Nederlandse tak van de BBC. Hierna vertrok ze naar Israël waar ze tot 1951 woonde. Terug in Nederland werkte ze als correspondente voor The Jerusalem Post en Ha-aretz. Van 1959 tot 1981 gaf ze les in Grieks en Latijn op diverse middelbare scholen. Ook schreef Boas voor enkele Nederlands-joodse bladen, waaronder Hakehilla, Kolenoe en Aleh en schreef ze zeer veel brieven naar Nederlandse dag- en weekbladen. Het archief van Henriette Boas bestaat grotendeels uit de correspondentie die ze voerde met familie, vrienden en redacties van diverse dag- en weekbladen. Ook zijn er aantekeningen en persoonlijk archiefmateriaal.

Henriette Boas (1911-2001) was a classical scholar and author. From 1940 to 1947 she worked in London as a translator and presenter for the Dutch branch of the BBC. Afterwards she went to Israel where she lived until 1951. Back in the Netherlands she worked as a correspondent for The Jerusalem Post and Ha-aretz. From 1959 to 1981 she taught Greek and Latin at several secondary schools. Boas also wrote articles for a few Dutch-Jewish magazines, including Hakehilla, Kolenoe and Aleh and many letters to Dutch newspapers and magazines. The Henriette Boas archive consists mainly of correspondence she had with family and friends and with editors of various newspapers and magazines. Besides this, there are notes and personal material.

De hoogleraar in de oude geschiedenis en archeologie U.Ph. Boissevain (1855-1930) wijdde een groot deel van zijn leven aan de uitgave van de werken van de geschiedschrijver Cassius Dio (circa 163-235 na Chr.). Het archief bevat voornamelijk werkmateriaal en correspondentie rond deze uitgave en enkele andere publicaties; daarnaast zijn er collegedictaten betreffende de Griekse en Romeinse oudheid voor de universiteiten van Groningen en Amsterdam.

The professor of prehistory and archeology U.Ph. Boissevain (1855-1930) devoted a large part of his life to the publication of the works of historiographer Cassius Dio (approx. 163-325 A.D.) The collection contains working material and correspondence about the publication of these works as well as about some other publications. Besides this, there are lecture notes on Greek and Roman antiquity which he gave at the University of Groningen and the University of Amsterdam.

Irma Boom (1960-) is een internationaal opererend grafisch ontwerper. Zij ontwerpt naast boeken onder meer huisstijlen, postzegels en munten. De collectie bevat al het door haar ontworpen werk en een beredeneerde selectie uit het overige archiefmateriaal. Deze collectie documenteert de ontstaansgeschiedenis van Irma Booms spraakmakende ontwerpen en geeft tegelijkertijd een beeld van de beroepspraktijk van de zelfstandig werkende grafisch ontwerper (ze heeft nooit meer dan één medewerker). Zo zijn er financiële stukken naast brieven en faxen aan en van opdrachtgevers en uitvoerders.

Irma Boom (1960-) is a Dutch graphic designer working internationally. Besides books, she also designs house styles, stamps and coins. The collection contains everything she designed as well as a reasoned selection of other archival material. The collection documents the history of the development of Irma Boon's high profile designs and at the same time illustrates the trade of an independently working graphic designer in practice. (She never has more than one assistant at a time.)

Justinus Jacob Leonard van der Brugghen (1804-1863) was rechter en politicus. De collectie bevat onder meer materiaal over het Ministerie Van der Brugghen (1856-1858). Aanwezig is ook een dossier over de schoolstrijd op plaatselijk niveau in 1845. In de collectie bevinden zich verder officiële documenten betreffende de levensloop en carrière van Van der Brugghen.

Justinus Jacob Leonard van der Brugghen (1804-1863) was a judge and a politician. The collection consists, among other things, of material relating to the Cabinet Van der Brugghen (1856-1858). There are also documents about a local controversy in the schooling system in 1845. Besides this, the collection contains official documents concerning Van der Brugghen's life and career.

De collectie bestaat uit brieven van Martin Buber (1879-1965), godsdienstfilosoof, aan Joseph Melzer, de oprichter van de uitgeverij Joseph Melzer Verlag. De brieven betreffen de uitgave in 1963 van 'Der Jude und sein Judentum', een verzameling essays over de joden en het jodendom die Martin Buber schreef in een periode van zestig jaar.

The collection consists of letters from Martin Buber (1879-1965), religious philosopher, to Joseph Melzer, founder of the publishing company Joseph Melzer Verlag. The letters concern the publication in 1963 of Der Jude und sein Judentum, a collection of essays on Jews and Judaism written by Martin Buber over a period of sixty years.

Derk Buddingh, kostschoolhouder in Den Haag, was medeoprichter van het Nederlands Onderwijzers Genootschap (1842) en de Paedagogische Bibliotheek (1867). Hij sloot zijn loopbaan af als bibliothecaris van wat nu de bibliotheek van de Technische Universiteit in Delft is. Buddinghs brede belangstelling blijkt uit het actieve lidmaatschap van enkele belangrijke culturele instellingen. De collectie, die geheel uit handschriftelijk materiaal bestaat, vormde zijn persoonlijk archief en weerspiegelt zijn activiteiten op het brede terrein van onderwijs en opvoeding, geschiedenis en Nederlandse letterkunde. Het gaat hierbij om brieven, artikelen, lezingen, manuscripten, vertalingen en persoonlijke aantekeningen.

Together with some others Derk Buddingh, director of a boarding school in The Hague, founded the Dutch teachers association ('Nederlands Onderwijzers Genootschap') in 1842 and the Paedagogische Bibliotheek (pedagogic library) in 1867. He ended his career as the librarian of what is nowadays the library of the Delft University of Technology. Buddingh's broad interest appears from the fact that he was also actively involved as a member of a number of important cultural institutions. The collection, which consists entirely of manuscripts, was his personal archive and reflects his activities in the broad areas of history, Dutch literature and in education and upbringing. The material consists of letters, articles, presentations, manuscripts, translations and personal notes.

De collectie De Buitenkant omvat feitelijk drie Amsterdamse archieven, namelijk die van Zetterij Chang Chi Lan-Ying, Offsetdrukkerij Jan de Jong en Uitgeverij De Buitenkant. Deze kleine bedrijven zijn echter persoonlijk en zakelijk zo nauw met elkaar verweven dat ze als één geheel worden beschreven. Het gaat bij deze collectie zowel om archiefmateriaal (correspondentie en administratie bijvoorbeeld) als om grafische eindproducten. Uitgeverij De Buitenkant ontstond in 1980 uit de door Chang Chi Lan-Ying en Jan de Jong gedreven zetterij en drukkerij. Door zich te richten op boeken over boeken en door het hoge niveau van productie en vormgeving wist de uitgeverij de aandacht op zich te vestigen. Deze collectie maakt onderzoek mogelijk naar de beoefening van de boekgeschiedenis in Nederland alsook naar de ontwikkelingen in de grafische industrie (van foto- naar digitale zettechniek).

The collection 'De Buitenkant' ('The Outside') in fact consists of three separate archives: the archives of Zetterij Chang Chi Lan-Ying (typesetter), of Offsetdrukkerij Jan de Jong (offset printing business) and, finally, of Uitgeverij De Buitenkant (publisher 'The Outside'). These three small companies are so interwoven both personally and in business that they are described as one. The collection includes archival material such as correspondence and administrative documents and graphic finished articles. Publisher 'De Buitenkant' developed in 1980 from the typesetting and the printing business ran by Chang Chi Lan-Ying and Jan de Jong respectively. By focusing on books about books and by the high level of the output and the design the company managed to draw attention to itself. The collection offers opportunities for research in the practice of book history in the Netherlands as well as in the developments in the graphics industry (from photo-typesetting to digital composition).

Gerrit de Clercq (1821-1857), de zoon van Réveilvoorman Willem de Clercq (1795-1844), was jurist. De Clercq keerde zich af van het geloof van zijn vader, ontwikkelde zich tot liberaal en schreef voor het tijdschrift De Gids. In 1848 werd hij referendaris bij het Ministerie van Financiën en drie jaar later secretaris van de Nederlandse Handelmaatschappij. De collectie bevat dagboekfragmenten en een kleine collectie brieven.

Gerrit de Clercq (1821-1857) was the son of Willem de Clercq (1795-1844), the leading figure of the Réveil. He was a jurist and turned away from the religious ideas of his father. He developed into a liberal and published in De Gids, a cultural and literary periodical. In 1848 he became a senior official at the Finance Ministry and three years later he became a secretary of the Nederlandse Handelmaatschappij, a Dutch trading society established in 1824 to promote and develop trade, shipping and agriculture. The collection contains diaries and a small number of letters.

Willem de Clercq (1795-1844) was koopman, bankier en literator. Hij was een invloedrijke figuur binnen de beweging van het Réveil. Het belangrijkste onderdeel van de collectie wordt gevormd door de dagboeken waarin De Clercq een levendige beschrijving geeft van Nederland tussen 1810 en 1844. In die dagboeken zijn geloofsbeleving, de toestand van de economie en het gezinsleven de belangrijkste thema's. De Clercq deed ook verslag van wat hij las. Van de vele duizenden brieven die De Clercq van Réveilvrienden en anderen ontving, nemen de meer dan 1800 brieven van zijn jeugdvriend Isaäc da Costa een speciale plaats in omdat zij de neerslag vormen van een 'romantische vriendschap'. Verder treft men in de collectie materiaal aan dat betrekking heeft op het ouderlingschap van De Clercq in de Waalse Kerk en zijn onofficiële werk voor de zending in binnen- en buitenland.

Willem de Clercq (1795-1844) was a merchant, banker and literary man. He was an influential person within the Réveil movement. The most important part of the collection is formed by his diaries, in which De Clercq vividly depicts the Netherlands between 1810 and 1844. The most important subjects in the diaries are the way in which people experience their religion, the state of the economy and family life. De Clercq also wrote about the things he read. Among the thousands of letters which De Clercq received from his friends of the Réveil and from others, the more than 1,800 letters from his old friend Isaäc da Costa are especially noteworthy, because they reflect a 'romantic friendship'. Besides this, the collection contains material about his position as a deacon of the Walloon Church and his unofficial work for the missionary both in the Netherlands and in foreign countries.

De in Arnhem geboren David Ezechiël Cohen (1882-1943) volgde na het gymnasium een studie medicijnen aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. In 1913 legde hij zijn artsexamen af en promoveerde op een proefschrift over oogheelkunde. Uiteindelijk specialiseerde Cohen zich in huid- en geslachtsziekten en opende hij twee praktijken in Amsterdam. Naast zijn werk als arts deed Cohen gedurende 25 jaar genealogisch onderzoek naar zijn familie. Hiervoor gebruikte hij onder andere archivalia van zijn grootvader van vaderskant, archiefstukken uit de gemeentelijke archieven van Amsterdam, Amersfoort, Arnhem en Nijmegen en archivalia van de familie Cohen Stuart. Het onderzoek resulteerde in een familiekroniek, die ook wel het Cohen's Boek wordt genoemd. De collectie dr. D.E. Cohen bestaat naast deze kroniek uit oorspronkelijke manuscripten van de hand van D.E. Cohen, stambomen, aktes, aantekeningen, kopieën en correspondentie met betrekking tot het genealogisch onderzoek. Ten slotte maken foto's (originelen en kopieën), paspoorten, een rijbewijs, kopieën van het trouwboekje en twee schilderijen deel uit van de collectie.

David Ezechiël Cohen (1882-1943) was born in Arnhem and after completing his pre-university education he studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam. In 1913 he sat his finals and obtained his doctorate with a thesis on ophthalmology. Cohen went on to specialise in skin diseases and sexually transmitted diseases and opened two practices in Amsterdam. Besides his work as a doctor, Cohen spent 25 years carrying out genealogical research into his family, using the archives of his paternal grandfather, records from the municipal archives of Amsterdam, Amersfoort, Arnhem and Nijmegen, and the archives of the Cohen Stuart family. His research led to a family chronicle which also became known as Cohen's Book. Besides this chronicle, Dr Cohen's collection consists of original manuscripts written by him, family trees, legal documents, notes, copies and correspondence related to his genealogical research. The collection also contains photographs (originals and copies), passports, a driving licence, copies of his marriage certificate and two paintings.

In 1927 werd door de Joodsche Vereniging voor Amsterdam-Oost Nachaliël de Commissie tot het Aanbieden van een Geschenk aan de Synagoge-Oost benoemd om geld in te zamelen voor een geschenk voor de nieuw te bouwen Synagoge-Oost aan de Linnaeusstraat in Amsterdam. Het archief bestaat uit correspondentie van de commissie, een brochure en enkele stukken met betrekking tot de inwijding van de synagoge op 6 september 1928. Het geschenk kreeg de vorm van gebrandschilderde ramen ontworpen door L. Pinkhof. De leegstaande synagoge is in 1962 gesloopt.

In 1927, Nachaliël, the Jewish Association for Amsterdam East, appointed a Committee to Present a Gift to the East Synagogue. Its task was to collect money for the proposed new East Synagogue on the Linnaeusstraat in Amsterdam. The archive contains correspondence from the committee, a brochure and several papers relating to the consecration of the synagogue on 6 September 1928. The gift took the form of stained glass windows designed by L. Pinkhof. The synagogue, which had fallen into disuse, was demolished in 1962.

De Commissie werd op initiatief van de Vergadering van opperrabbijnen in Nederland op 12 januari 1908 benoemd om, onder voorzitterschap van opperrabbijn Izak Juda Palache (1858-1926), de mogelijkheden te onderzoeken om te komen tot de inrichting van joods middelbaar onderwijs. In het archief bevinden zich de notulen van de commissie en enkele ingekomen brieven.

The Committee was appointed on 12 January 1908, at the initiative of the Conference of Chief Rabbis in the Netherlands. The committee was chaired by Chief Rabbi Izak Juda Palache (1858-1926) and charged with investigating the possibility of establishing Jewish secondary schools. The archive contains the minutes of the committee and several incoming letters.

Henri Max Corwin (tot 1955 Cohen) (1903-1962) was textielfabrikant in Oldenzaal. Eind jaren 1930 hielp hij joodse vluchtelingen uit Duitsland bij het oversteken van de Nederlandse grens en gedurende de Tweede Wereldoorlog hielp hij familie en vrienden aan onderduikadressen. Ook zelf wist hij de oorlog door onderduiken te overleven. Vanaf halverwege de jaren 1950 deed Corwin genealogisch onderzoek naar joodse families uit het oosten en noordoosten van Nederland. De resultaten van dit genealogisch onderzoek werden gepubliceerd in diverse periodieken en kranten. De collectie bestaat grotendeels uit handgeschreven resultaten van dit genealogisch onderzoek en uit daarmee samenhangende correspondentie.

Henri Max Corwin (1903-1962) – until 1955, Cohen – was a textile manufacturer in Oldenzaal. In the late 1930s, he helped Jewish refugees from Germany to cross the border into the Netherlands. He also helped friends and family to go into hiding during the Second World War, and he managed to survive the war by going into hiding himself. From the mid-1950s, Corwin conducted genealogical research into Jewish families from the east and northeast of the Netherlands. The results of this research were published in various periodicals and newspapers. The collection consists largely of the handwritten results of his genealogical research and associated correspondence.

De Amsterdamse schrijver Isaäc da Costa (1798-1860), een jood, liet zich in 1822 dopen tot christen. In 1823 publiceerde Da Costa het pamflet Bezwaren tegen den geest der eeuw, waarin hij zich tegen de ideeën van de Verlichting uitsprak. Met dit pamflet werd hij een van de meest uitgesproken vertegenwoordigers van het Réveil, een beweging binnen het protestantisme waarin de persoonlijke beleving van het geloof vooropstond. De collectie bevat in de eerste plaats de omvangrijke correspondentie van Da Costa met andere figuren van het Réveil, onder wie Willem de Clercq. Da Costa's teksten van voordrachten over vaderlandse geschiedenis en de Bijbel geven inzicht in de denkwereld van het Réveil. In de collectie is ook materiaal te vinden dat betrekking heeft op Da Costa's vrouw, Hanna Belmonte, en op de kinderen Da Costa, vooral Abraham, Francisca en Rebecca.

The Amsterdam author Isaäc da Costa (1798-1860), a Jew, was baptized a Christian in 1822. In 1823 Da Costa published Bezwaren tegen den geest der eeuw ('Objections against the spirit of the century'), in which he argued against the principles of the Enlightenment. With this pamphlet he became the most explicit representative of the Réveil, a Protestant movement stressing the personal element of belief. The collection consists of, in the first place, the extensive correspondence of Da Costa with other individuals of the Réveil, such as Willem de Clercq. There are also lectures on national history and the Bible by Da Costa, which offer insight into the mentality and way of thinking of Réveil adherents. Besides this, the collection contains documents about Da Costa's wife, Hanna Belmonte, and about the Da Costa children, especially Abraham, Francisca and Rebecca.

De collectie omvat handgeschreven commentaren en lezingen, collegelijsten en collegedictaten van de bibliothecaris van de Stadsbibliotheek en hoogleraar in de rechtsgeleerdheid aan het Amsterdamse Athenaeum Illustre H.C. Cras (1739-1820). Cras kan beschouwd worden als degene die het vak rechtsgeleerdheid aan het Athenaeum Illustre deed herleven. De collectie geeft vooral een goed beeld van de visie op de rechtsgeleerdheid in de tijd van de Verlichting, in het bijzonder op het natuurrecht.

This collection consists of material of H.C. Cras (1739-1820), a professor of law at the Athenaeum Illustre in Amsterdam and librarian of the Amsterdam municipal library. The collection contains handwritten comments and lectures, lists of lectures and lecture notes. Cras can be considered to be the one who revived law as a field of study at the Athenaeum Illustre. The collection gives a good impression of the view on law, in particular natural law, during the Enlightenment.

De vereniging De Distelvinck was een literaire kring in 1924 en 1925. Het bestuur van de vereniging werd gevormd door Jan Campert, Henrik Scholte en D.A.M. Binnendijk. Het archief bestaat voor het grootste deel uit brieven aan en van het bestuur van De Distelvinck.

De Distelvinck (English: The Goldfinch) was a literary society that was active from 1924 to 1925. The board of the society consisted of Jan Campert, Henrik Scholte and D.A.M. Binnendijk. The archive mainly contains letters to and from the board of De Distelvinck.

De in Krakow geboren Joseph Hirsch Dünner (1833-1911) werd in 1863 benoemd tot rector van het Nederlands-Israëlitisch Seminarium. Gedurende de periode dat Dünner deze functie bekleedde voerde hij in het spoor van de Duitse neo-orthodoxie belangrijke hervormingen door. Naast het religieuze onderwijs werden studenten verplicht ook onderwijs te volgen aan het gymnasium en de universiteit. In 1874 werd Dünner benoemd tot opperrabbijn van het synagogaal ressort Noord-Holland met als belangrijkste gemeente de Nederlands-Israëlitische Hoofdsynagoge in Amsterdam. Deze functie vervulde hij tot zijn dood. Dünners archief bestaat voor het overgrote deel uit ingekomen brieven.

Born in Krakow, Joseph Hirsch Dünner (1833-1911) was appointed rector of the Amsterdam Rabbinical Seminary in 1863. During the time that he held this post, he carried out major reforms in line with German neo-Orthodoxy. In addition to religious education, students were obliged to study at the gymnasium and university. In 1874, Dünner was appointed chief rabbi for the synagogue district of North Holland, whose most important congregation was the Dutch Israelite Main Synagogue in Amsterdam. He held this post until his death. Dünner's archive consists largely of incoming correspondence.

Pieter Jacob Elout van Soeterwoude (1805-1893) was jurist. Tijdens zijn studie in Leiden kwam hij onder invloed van de anti-revolutionaire schrijver Willem Bilderdijk en sloot zich aan bij het Réveil. Elout werkte bij de rechterlijke macht en was lid van de Tweede Kamer. De collectie bevat een autobiografie en brieven van Abraham Capadose, Johan Anne Singendonck en Isaäc da Costa. Ook zijn stukken aanwezig over de actie voor vrijlating van twee om hun geloof vervolgde inwoners van Florence.

Pieter Jacob Elout van Soeterwoude (1805-1893) was a lawyer. When he was a student in Leiden, he was influenced by the anti-revolutionary writer Willem Bilderdijk and joined the Réveil. Elout worked in the judiciary and he was a member of Parliament. The collection contains an autobiography and letters from Abraham Capadose, Johan Anne Singendonck and Isaäc da Costa. There are also documents about the action for the release of two residents of Florence, who were prosecuted for their religous beliefs.

Het archief is gevormd door de redactie van de literaire almanak Erts, waarin Henrik Scholte de drijvende kracht was. Het bevat correspondentie tussen de redactieleden onderling en tussen de redactie en degenen die een bijdrage aan de almanak leverden. Ook zijn er verslagen van redactievergaderingen te vinden.

The archive was set up by the editors of the literary almanac Erts, the key figure among them being Henrik Scholte. The archive includes correspondence between the editors themselves and with contributors to the almanac. It also contains minutes of editorial meetings.

Filmliga, onafhankelijk maandblad voor filmkunst verscheen van 1931 tot 1936. De voornaamste redacteuren waren Menno ter Braak, L.J. Jordaan en Henrik Scholte. Het blad besteedde zowel aandacht aan de avant-gardefilm als aan Hollywoodfilms. Het archief bevat voornamelijk correspondentie met de redactie van het tijdschrift.

Filmliga, onafhankelijk maandblad voor filmkunst was a monthly periodical devoted to cinema that ran from 1931 to 1936. Its most prominent editors were Menno ter Braak, L.J. Jordaan and Henrik Scholte. The periodical focused on both avant-garde and Hollywood films. The archive chiefly contains correspondence with the periodical’s editors.

De schrijver, psychiater en maatschappijhervormer Frederik Willem van Eeden (1860-1932) heeft grote invloed uitgeoefend op de literaire en maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen in zijn tijd, onder meer door de oprichting van de woon- en werkgemeenschap Walden. De collectie is onmisbaar voor de bestudering van zijn leven en werk en biedt inzicht in het literaire, intellectuele en maatschappelijke discours van zijn generatie.

The Frederik van Eeden Genootschap (Frederik van Eeden Society) was founded in 1934 and aims to investigate the life and work of Frederik van Eeden and to keep his ideas alive. As such, the society collected a huge amount of material both of Van Eeden and about him, a lot of which originates from his inheritance. The collection contains a large number of original manuscripts, correspondence and personal documents. Besides this, there is extensive documentation and iconographical material. The writer, psychiatrist and social reformer Frederik Willem van Eeden (1860-1932) exercised a large influence on the literary and social developments of his time, among other things by establishing the commune Walden. The collection is indispensible for research into his life and work and offers insight into the literary, intellectual and social debates of his time.
