Uitgeverij Big Balloon was jarenlang een toonaangevende kinder- en stripboekenuitgeverij. In 1990 werden veel van de uitgaven van stripuitgeverij Oberon voortgezet, waaronder stripalbums maar ook striptijdschriften, zoals Eppo, Eppo Wordt vervolgd, Sjors & Sjimmie Stripblad, SjoSji en Striparazzi. In 2005 werd besloten om op een paar titels na te stoppen met het uitgeven van strips en werd het album- en striptijdschriftenarchief geschonken aan het Stripschap. Het Stripschap heeft op zijn beurt de Big Balloon-collectie toegevoegd aan het bestaande bruikleen aan de Universiteitsbibliotheek. Het archief bevat dossiers van stripalbums en van tijdschriftenstrips met zwartwit-films, originele tekeningen en omslagen, inkleuringen, vertalingen en vele albums en tijdschriften.

For many years Big Balloon was a leading publisher of children’s books and comic strips. In 1990 the company took over many of the titles of former comic strip publishers Oberon, not only comic strip albums but also comic strip magazines such as Eppo, Eppo Wordt Vervolgd, Sjors & Sjimmie Stripblad, SjoSji and Striparazzi. In 2005 it was decided to stop publishing comic strips, with the exception of a few titles. The company’s archive of comic strip albums and magazines was donated to Het Stripschap. This society of comic strip enthusiasts subsequently added the Big Balloon collection to the existing loan agreement with the University Library. The archive includes files on comic strip albums and serialized comic strips with black and white-films, original drawings and jackets, colourings, translations and numerous albums and magazines.

De tekenaars Raymond Bär van Hemmersweil (geb.1929) en Jan van Reek (1924-1994) maakten van 1961 tot 1975 de strip Wipperoen. De tekeningen van de verhalen die tot 1975 in een groot aantal kranten verschenen, enkele proefdrukken alsmede de knipsels van de verhalen vormen het grootste deel van deze collectie. De collectie biedt dan ook een goed inzicht in het productieproces van een krantenstrip in deze periode.

From 1961 until 1975 Raymond Bär van Hemmersweil (born 1929) and Jan van Reek (1924-1994) drew the comic Wipperoen. The drawings of the stories that appeared in many newspapers as well as newspaper clippings are the main part of this collection. This collection provides a good insight view in the production process of a typical sixties en seventies newspaper comic in the 20th century.

Dick Briel (geb. 1950) studeerde aan de Rietveld Academie te Amsterdam en begon in 1979 strips te tekenen. In striptijdschrift Eppo verschenen in 1981 en 1982 twee afleveringen van zijn strip 'Professor Palmboom'. Deze verhalen werden internationaal een succes met acht vertalingen. In die tijd werkte hij ook aan de strip 'Hulbert' voor Mickey Maandblad. Midden jaren 1980 werd het stil rond Dick Briel tot in 1997 ineens een derde album van 'Professor Palmboom' verscheen. De collectie bevat de scenario's, schetsen, schetsboeken, een flink aantal originele tekeningen en de albums die verschenen, alsmede drukproeven, inkleuringen (van de hand van Paula Mazzola) en ander grafisch werk van Briel. Tevens is er een map met contracten rond de stripuitgaven aanwezig.

Dick Briel (born 1950) attended the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and began drawing comics in 1979. Two episodes of his comic strip 'Professor Palmboom' appeared in Eppo in 1981 and 1982. The stories were internationally successful and were translated into eight languages. At the time he was also working on the comic strip 'Hulbert' for the monthly comic strip Mickey Maandblad. Not much was heard from Dick Briel after the mid-1980s, but in 1997 a third 'Professor Palmboom' album appeared. The collection contains the scripts, sketches, sketchbooks, a sizeable number of original drawings and all comic albums to have been published, as well as proofs, colourings (by Paula Mazzola) and other graphic work by Briel. There is also a folder with contracts concerning the publication of Briel’s comic strips.

Georges Mazure (1919-1980) was illustrator, striptekenaar, reclametekenaar en schrijver. Het archief bevat vele honderden illustraties die Mazure maakte voor feuilletons en korte verhalen in tijdschriften en boeken. Daarnaast zitten er tien complete stripverhalen in en een aantal losse stroken, al dan niet geïnkt. Het archief is van belang omdat het vrijwel het complete oeuvre omvat van een belangrijke tekenaar uit de naoorlogse periode die alle tekenpaden bewandelde.

Georges Mazure (1919-1980) was an illustrator, comics and advertising artist and writer. The archive contains hundreds of illustrations made by Mazure for serials and short stories in magazines and books. It also includes ten complete comics and a number of loose strips, inked or uninked. The archive is important because it contains the virtually complete oeuvre of a major artist from the post-war period who explored all avenues of drawing.

Het Stripschap is een vereniging die de kennis van en de waardering voor de strip in het algemeen en de Nederlandse strip in het bijzonder wil bevorderen. Het archief bevat correspondentie en andere documenten die de weerslag vormen van de activiteiten van deze vereniging.

Het Stripschap is a society that tries to stimulate the appreciation for and the knowledge of the comic in general and especially the Dutch comic. This archive contains correspondence and documents about the history of the society.

In 1953 richtte Anton de Zwaan Swan Features op om de Nederlandse strips te promoten. Daaronder Aram van Piet Wijn, Eric de Noorman van Hans G. Kresse, Kapitein Rob van Pieter Kühn, Piloot Storm van Henk Sprenger, Professor Pi van Bob van den Born, Simpelman van Wim van Wieringen en Tekko Taks van Henk Kabos. Swan Features is wereldwijd een van de meest toonaangevende bedrijven op het gebied van krantenstrips. De collectie bevat ongeveer 5000 origineel getekende stroken met stripverhalen. Van de strips Simpelman en Tekko Taks zijn bijvoorbeeld vrijwel alle originelen aanwezig. Verder bevat de collectie veel clichédrukken, brieven en contracten met stripmakers.

Kresse, Kapitein Rob by Pieter Kühn, Piloot Storm by Henk Sprenger, Professor Pi by Bob van den Born, Simpelman by Wim van Wieringen and Tekko Taks by Henk Kabos. Swan Features is one of the leading companies in the world in the field of newspaper comic strips. The collection contains some 5,000 original drawn comic panels. To give an indication, virtually all the originals of the comic strips Simpelman and Tekko Taks are to be found here. The collection also contains numerous stereotypes, letters and contracts with comics creators.
