Eli Heimans (1861-1914) was een Amsterdamse onderwijzer die rond 1900, samen met Jac. P. Thijsse en andere collega's, in de lessen op de scholen waar hij werkte, via boeken, met artikelen in kranten en tijdschriften en met het tijdschrift De levende natuur een groot (en nadrukkelijk jong) publiek wilde informeren over en enthousiasmeren voor de wilde natuur in Nederland. Zijn werk had succes: de publicaties werden goed gelezen, overal in Nederland trokken (jonge) natuurliefhebbers het veld in en organiseerden zij zich, en bij de verschillende overheden werd aandacht voor de natuur vertaald in beleid. De inspanningen van Heimans en zijn collega's kunnen beschouwd worden als de aanzet tot de huidige georganiseerde en gereguleerde natuurstudie, -educatie en -bescherming in Nederland. Aangezien het archief beperkt is van omvang en verre van volledig, geeft het slechts weinig informatie over Heimans' leven en werk. Maar juist omdat dit het weinige is dat van Heimans' archief bewaard is gebleven, is het bijzonder waardevol.

Thijsse and other colleagues, tried to raise interest for the indiginous Dutch nature among a broad (and notably young) audience with his teaching, books, articles in magazines and newspapers and the journal De levende natuur (The living nature). He was quite successful: the publications were well read, all over the country (young) people went out to study and enjoy nature, nature enthousiasts flocked together in organisations, and government administrations at different levels incorporated the protection of nature in their policy. The work of Heimans c.s. can be considered as the start of today's organized and formalized study, education and protection of nature in the Netherlands. As this is only a small archive and far from complete, it provides little information about Heimans' life and work. But in its limitations lies its value: this is all that remains of Heimans' archive that must have been very extensive.

Hun werk had succes: hun publicaties werden goed gelezen, (jonge) natuurliefhebbers trokken het veld in om de natuur te bestuderen en ervan te genieten, natuurliefhebbers sloten zich aaneen in organisaties, en bij de verschillende overheden werd aandacht voor de natuur tot beleid gemaakt. Hun inspanningen kunnen beschouwd worden als de aanzet tot de huidige georganiseerde en gereglementeerde natuurstudie, -educatie en -bescherming in Nederland. Om het gedachtegoed van Heimans levend te houden werd na zijn overlijden in 1914 de 'Heimans Commissie' opgericht, in 1916 omgezet in de Heimans-Stichting. Een vergelijkbare organisatie werd kort na de dood van Thijsse in 1945 opgericht, namelijk de Stichting Dr. Jac. P. Thijsse-Fonds. Door het geringe kapitaal dat zij beheerden konden deze organisaties maar weinig activiteiten ontplooien. Naast beide organisaties ontstond in 1977 de Stichting Heimans en Thijsse Bibliotheek en Archief om de geschiedenis van de natuurstudie, -educatie en -bescherming in Nederland te documenteren. De Heimans-Stichting en de Stichting Dr. Jac. P. Thijsse Fonds gingen in 1981 samen verder in de Stichting Heimans en Thijsse-Fonds. In 1993 werd de Stichting Heimans en Thijsse Bibliotheek en Archief voortgezet als de Heimans en Thijsse Stichting en werd de Stichting Heimans en Thijsse-Fonds omgevormd tot een ondersteunende organisatie van de Heimans en Thijsse Stichting. De archieven van de verschillende organisaties laten duidelijk zien hoe zij, met wisselend succes, het pionierswerk van Heimans en Thijsse in herinnering probeerden te houden, nieuwe generaties erover informeerden en personen en organisaties die in de geest van beide pioniers werkten ondersteunden en stimuleerden.

Soon after Heimans' death in 1914 a committee was formed to keep the memory of his work alive. It was formalized into the Heimans-Stichting (Heimans Society) in 1916. A comparable organisation was founded in 1946 after the death of Thijsse, the Stichting Dr. Jac. P. Thijsse-Fonds (Dr. Jac. P. Thijsse-Fund). These were only small organisations with limited financial means and, for that reason, could not accomplish very much. Next to these two, the Stichting Heimans en Thijsse Bibliotheek en Archief (Heimans and Thijsse Library and Archive) was founded (1977) with the aim to document the history of the study, education and protection of nature in the Netherlands. The Heimans-Stichting and the Stichting Dr. Jac. P. Thijsse Fonds joined forces in 1981 and were turned into the Stichting Heimans en Thijsse-Fonds (Heimans and Thijsse-Fund). In 1993 the Stichting Heimans en Thijsse Bibliotheek en Archief was continued as the Heimans en Thijsse Stichting (Heimans and Thijsse Society) and the Stichting Heimans en Thijsse-Fonds was made into an organisation for the financial support of the Heimans en Thijsse Stichting. The papers of these different organisations clearly show how they tried, with varying success, to keep the memory of Heimans' and Thijsse's pioneering work alive, to inform new generations and to stimulate and support people and organisations whose work was inspired by them.

De stichting bouwde door voornamelijk schenkingen een uitgebreide bibliotheek op met boeken, tijdschriften, rapporten, nota's, onderzoeksverslagen etc. op het gebied van de natuurstudie, -beleving, -bescherming en -educatie in Nederland en de overzeese gebieden, alsmede een grote verzameling documentatiemateriaal en losse archivalia over deze onderwerpen en enkele (al dan niet complete) archieven van organisaties en personen die werkzaam waren op de genoemde terreinen. In 2015 werden de archieven alsmede de losse archivalia en de unieke stukken die zich in het documentatiemateriaal bevonden in bruikleen gegeven aan de afdeling Bijzondere Collecties van de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

In 1977, the Stichting Heimans en Thijsse Bibliotheek en Archief (Heimans and Thijsse Library and Archive) was founded with the aim to document the history of the study, education and protection of nature in the Netherlands. In 1993 it was continued as the Heimans en Thijsse Stichting (Heimans en Thijsse Society). The society set up (mostly through donations) a large library with books, journals, reports, accounts, papers etc. covering nature study, experience, protection and education in the Netherlands and former colonies. A vast collection of records, stray archival documents and (partial) archives of organisations and private persons active on the aformentioned subjects was brought together as well. In 2015, the archives, stray archival material and the unique items among the records were transfered as permanent loan to the department of Special Collections of the University of Amsterdam.

Het Museum ten dienste van het Onderwijs had ten doel het bijeenbrengen en onderhouden van een verzameling van leermiddelen ten bate van het onderwijs. Het archief bestaat uit correspondentie en vergaderstukken van het museum, alsmede correspondentie van de Algemeene Nederlandsche Schoolfilm Centrale en de Utrechtse Lichtbeelden Vereniging.

The purpose of The Museum ten dienste van het Onderwijs was to build and maintain a collection of educational tools on behalf of education. The archive consists of correspondence and meeting documents as well as correspondence of the Algemeene Nederlandsche Schoolfilm Centrale and the Utrechtse Lichtbeelden Vereniging.

Jac. P. Thijsse (1861-1945) was een Amsterdamse onderwijzer die rond 1900, samen met Eli Heimans en andere collega's, in de lessen op de scholen waar hij werkte, via boeken, met artikelen in kranten en tijdschriften en met het tijdschrift De levende natuur een groot (en nadrukkelijk jong) publiek wilde informeren over en enthousiasmeren voor de wilde natuur in Nederland. Geleidelijk kwam het accent van zijn activiteiten te liggen op de bescherming van de natuur in Nederland. Zijn werk had succes: de publicaties werden goed gelezen, overal in Nederland trokken (jonge) natuurliefhebbers het veld in en organiseerden zij zich, bij de verschillende overheden werd aandacht voor de natuur vertaald in beleid en wisten particuliere organisaties natuurgebieden aan te kopen en voor het publiek open te stellen. De inspanningen van Thijsse en zijn collega's kunnen beschouwd worden als de aanzet tot de huidige georganiseerde en gereguleerde natuurstudie, -educatie en -bescherming in Nederland. Hoewel het archief zeker niet volledig is, geeft het veel informatie over Thijsses uiteenlopende activiteiten en contacten, en over de waardering die hij voor zijn werk ontving.
