Uitgeverij W. van Hoeve (1941-1977) stond een aanzienlijke periode van haar bestaan onder leiding van directeur en oprichter Wilhelmus van Hoeve. Hij richtte zich binnen het fonds onder meer op uitgaven over en voor Indonesië, waar hij tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog eigenaar werd van uitgeverij Vorkink te Bandung. Het archief bevat veel correspondentie aangaande het productieproces bij de uitgeverij en is daarmee van belang voor onderzoek naar uitgeverijen in Nederland na de Tweede Wereldoorlog en naar boekproductie en -consumptie in Indonesië in deze tijd.

For a long time the publishing house W. van Hoeve (1941-1977) was led by its director and founder Wilhelmus van Hoeve. He focussed on publications about and for Indonesia, where he became the owner of publishing house Vorkink in Bandung during World War II. The archive mainly contains correspondence on the production process at the publishing house. It is, therefore, important for research on publishing in the Netherlands after World War II and on book production and consumption in Indonesia during this period.

Tobias Lewenstein werd in 1864 in Paramaribo geboren als zoon van de eerste Surinaamse opperrabbijn. Na het overlijden van zijn vader in datzelfde jaar keerde het gezin terug naar Nederland. Zijn rabbijnentitel behaalde Lewenstein aan het Nederlands-Israëlitisch Seminarium in Amsterdam waarna hij respectievelijk de functie van opperrabbijn in Friesland, Den Haag, Denemarken en Zürich vervulde. Het archief bestaat uit ingekomen brieven gericht aan Tobias Lewenstein in zijn functie van opperrabbijn van Den Haag.

Tobias Lewenstein was born in Paramaribo in 1864, the son of the first Surinamese chief rabbi. Following the death of his father in the same year, the family returned to the Netherlands. After qualifying as a rabbi at the Amsterdam Rabbinical Seminary, Lewenstein successively held the posts of chief rabbi in Friesland, The Hague, Denmark and Zürich. The archive comprises incoming letters addressed to Tobias Lewenstein in his position as chief rabbi of The Hague.

Meijer Elte N.V. was een antiquariaat dat vanaf 1901 meer dan tachtig jaar was gevestigd in het centrum van Den Haag. Het internationaal bekende antiquariaat specialiseerde zich in mooi geïllustreerde en kostbare boeken uit de periode tussen de vroege zeventiende en vroege negentiende eeuw.

Het archief bevat met name financiële administratie en correspondentie met (mogelijke) klanten en verkopers vanaf 1909 tot en met het sluiten van de winkel in 1984. Daarnaast maken ook bouwtekeningen van het pand op Korte Poten 13 (circa 1917) en enkele foto’s en clichés deel uit van dit archief.

The antiquarian bookseller Meijer Elte N.V. had been established in the centre of The Hague for over eight decades since 1901. The internationally known bookseller specialised in beautifully illustrated and precious books from the early seventeenth to the early nineteenth centuries.

The archive principally contains financial administration and correspondence with existing or prospective clients and sellers from 1909 until 1984, when the shop closed. The archive also includes building plans for the building on 13, Korte Poten (circa 1917) as well as a number of photographs and stereotypes.

Het archief van de firma Martinus Nijhoff bevat bedrijfsarchivalia van de boekhandel en de uitgeverij; behalve antiquariaatscatalogi is vrijwel geen materiaal bewaard gebleven van het antiquariaat en het veilinghuis. Er zijn veel dossiers met correspondentie over uitgaven. Tot halverwege de jaren 1960 is de leiding in handen gebleven van telgen uit de familie Nijhoff. Ook zijn hier persoonlijke archieven van Martinus Nijhoff, Wouter Nijhoff en Wouter Nijhoff Pz. aanwezig.

The archive of the firm of Martinus Nijhoff comprises the company archives of its rare book shop and publishing house; apart from antiquarian book catalogues, virtually no documents have been preserved of the antiquarian book shop and the auction house. There are numerous files with correspondence on publications. The company remained in the family until the mid-1960s; the collection also contains the personal archives of Martinus Nijhoff, Wouter Nijhoff and Wouter Nijhoff Pz..

Gerrit Noordzij was een bekend boekverzorger en een invloedrijk kalligraaf, letterontwerper en schrifttheoreticus. Zijn drukletters werden in de handel gebracht door The Enschedé Font Foundry. Daarnaast was Noordzij van belang als docent aan de Haagse Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten. Tot zijn studenten daar behoorden onder meer Frank Blokland, Erik van Blokland, Just van Rossum, Peter Verheul en zijn zonen Christoph en Peter Matthias Noordzij. De door Gerrit Noordzij ontworpen boekomslagen zijn doorgaans in belettering van zijn hand uitgevoerd en geven zo een goede indruk van zijn ontwikkeling op dit gebied. Behalve boekomslagen maken door hem verzorgde boeken, enkele ontwerpen, een geschreven oorkonde en agenda's deel uit van deze collectie.

Gerrit Noordzij was a well-known Dutch book designer and an influential calligrapher and typographer. Internationally, he was one of the leading theorists on writing and type. He designed many books, in particular book jackets, and several typefaces which were released by The Enschedé Font Foundry. Noordzij was also important as a teacher at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague. Many of his former students became well-known type designers, among them Frank Blokland, Erik van Blokland, Just van Rossum, Peter Verheul and his sons Christoph and Peter Matthias Noordzij. The book jackets designed by Noordzij are generally produced with lettering also designed by him. As such, they give a good impression of his development. In addition to book jackets, the collection contains a number of designs, a certificate of appreciation and his diaries.

De Swing Papa’s was een Nederlands amateur-jazzorkest dat actief was in de jaren 1935-1943. Het orkest werd opgericht door drummer Iwan Poustochkine. De band trad regelmatig op in Nederland en enkele keren in het buitenland op jazz-concoursen. De vaste bezetting wisselde in de loop der jaren en er waren vaak invallers of extra leden. Door de Duitse bezetting vanaf 1940 werd het steeds moeilijker om muziek te maken en vanaf 1943 was dit praktisch onmogelijk waardoor het orkest stopte met optreden. Het archief bestaat voornamelijk uit correspondentie uit de periode 1935-1941 die een duidelijk beeld geeft van de activiteiten van het orkest.

Founded by drummer Iwan Poustochkine, the Dutch amateur jazz orchestra The Swing Papa’s was active in the years 1935-1943. The band regularly performed in the Netherlands and occasionally took part in jazz competitions abroad. The regular line-up changed in the course of the years, with the band often taking stand-in musicians or extra members on board. The German occupation in 1940 made it increasingly difficult to play music, becoming all but impossible from 1943, so that the band stopped performing. The archive, which mainly consists of correspondence covering the years 1935-1941, provides a clear illustration of the orchestra’s activities.

Het Voorlichtingsbureau voor de Voeding, in 2000 opgegaan in de Stichting Voedingscentrum Nederland, is een instelling die gefinancierd wordt door de Nederlandse overheid om consumenten wetenschappelijk verantwoorde informatie te geven over gezonde voeding en voedselveiligheid. De bibliotheek van het Voorlichtingsbureau voor de Voeding schonk in 1996 een deel van haar collectie aan de Universiteitsbibliotheek. De collectie bevat Nederlandse en buitenlandse gedrukte kookboeken uit de periode 1781-1987, enkele afleveringen van tijdschriften, handschriften met recepten en enkele boeken over de geschiedenis van de kookkunst. De collectie biedt inzicht in veranderingen in de bereidingswijze van voedsel in de negentiende en twintigste eeuw.

The Netherlands Bureau for Food and Nutrition Education (Voorlichtingsbureau voor de Voeding), incorporated in the Netherlands Nutrition Centre since 2000, is an independent organisation, funded by the Dutch government, to provide information on dietary health and food safety. In 1996 the Bureau donated part of its library to the Library of the University of Amsterdam. The collection includes 19th and 20th century cookery books printed in the Netherlands and abroad, and some manuscripts on food and cookery. The collection enables research into the history of food in the Netherlands.
