Henk Prins richtte in 1954 het literair agentschap Prins & Prins op. Het archief van dit agentschap tot circa 1990 bevat correspondentie met auteurs, uitgevers en agentschappen, contracten en royalty-afrekeningen.

In 1954 Henk Prins set up the literary agency Prins & Prins. The archive of this agency, which runs to c.1990, contains correspondence with authors, publishers and agencies, contracts and royalty payments.

Izaak Rafalowicz werd in 1899 in Polen geboren. Omdat het antisemitisme daar toenam, vertrok hij in 1918 naar Nederland. In Amsterdam was Rafalowicz in 1921 betrokken bij de oprichting van de Oost-joodse Cultuurvereniging Sch. An-Ski (1921-1979) waarvan hij vanaf 1945 voorzitter was. Daarnaast was hij lid van de Joodse Coördinatie Commissie (JCC, 1945-1948), die zich inzette voor de wederopbouw van de joodse gemeenschap na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Hij was tevens actief voor de Organisation for Rehabilitation and Training (ORT), zowel voor de internationale organisatie als voor de Nederlandse tak daarvan. De ORT zet zich in voor onderwijs aan de joodse bevolking. In de collectie bevinden zich archivalia van de JCC en van de Stichting ORT-Holland, alsmede publicaties en stukken betreffende internationale congressen van de ORT.

Izaak Rafalowicz was born in Poland in 1899. He moved to the Netherlands in 1918 to escape the rising anti-Semitism in his own country. In Amsterdam, Rafalowicz was involved in the founding of the Eastern Jewish Workers Cultural Society Sch. An-Ski in 1921, of which he was the president from 1945 onwards. At the same time, he was a member of the Jewish Coordination Committee (JCC, 1945-1948), which worked to rebuild the Jewish community after World War II. Rafalowicz was also an active member of the Organisation for Rehabilitation and Training (ORT), working for the international organisation as well as the Dutch branch. The ORT is dedicated to providing education for the Jewish population. The collection contains archival items from the JCC and the ORT Holland Foundation as well as publications and documents dealing with the international ORT congresses.

De van oorsprong Russische Boris Raptschinsky (1887-1983) werkte vanaf zijn komst in Nederland in 1912 als docent Russisch op diverse middelbare scholen. Hiernaast publiceerde hij vele artikelen op het gebied van de Russische taal, geschiedenis en cultuur voor diverse kranten en weekbladen. Van zijn hand verschenen woordenboeken en geschiedkundige edities. Een aantal jaren na zijn promotie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam in 1925 werkte Raptschinsky als privaat-docent Oost-Europese beschaving aan de Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht. Deze baan moest hij vanwege zijn joodse afkomst in 1940 opgeven. Wel wist Raptschinsky met zijn vrouw tijdens de periode van de Tweede Wereldoorlog uit handen van de Duitse bezettingsmacht te blijven. Hun enige dochter overleefde de Tweede Wereldoorlog niet. Het grote verdriet om dit verlies beïnvloedde het leven en werk van Raptschinsky. Tot de oprichting van de staat Israël in 1948 werkte hij nog enige tijd voor de organisatie 'Freeland League for Jewish Territorial Colonization'. In Raptschinsky's archief bevindt zich, naast persoonlijke bescheiden als foto's en brieven van familie en vrienden, correspondentie met uitgevers en andere publicisten. Verder maken katernen met uittreksels, notities en dagboekaantekeningen, overdrukken van artikelen en een dossier van de 'Freeland League' deel uit van het archief.

Originally from Russia, Boris Raptschinsky (1887-1983) worked as a teacher of Russian at various secondary schools after arriving in the Netherlands in 1912. In addition to his work, he published many articles in the field of Russian language, history and culture in various newspapers and weekly magazines. He also compiled dictionaries and historical editions. Some years after obtaining his doctorate from the University of Amsterdam in 1925, Raptschinsky worked as an unsalaried lecturer in Eastern European civilisation at Utrecht University. In 1940, he was forced to give up his job because of his Jewish birth. Although Raptschinsky and his wife were able to remain out of the hands of the German occupation forces during the Second World War, their only daughter did not survive the war. The great sorrow at this loss had a major impact on Raptschinsky's life and work. Until the founding of the state of Israel in 1948, Raptschinsky continued to work for the Freeland League for Jewish Territorial Colonisation for some time. In addition to such personal effects as photos and letters from family and friends, Raptschinsky's archive contains correspondence with publishers and other publicists. It also includes sections with excerpts, notes and journal entries, reprints of articles and a file on the Freeland League.

De items dateren zowel uit de 19e als uit de 20e eeuw maar er is geen zwaartepunt aan te geven. Het biedt inzicht in de ontwikkeling van een Nederlands drukkersbedrijf door de jaren heen.

This archive contains documents concerning the printing house Koninklijke drukkerij H.A.M. Roelants. It consists of (mainly financial) administrative documents, and some books and paraphernalia. The items date from 1861 to the end of the twentieth century. It offers an overview of the development of a Dutch printing company over time.

Sjoerd Hendrik de Roos (1877–1962) was een van de belangrijke Nederlandse grafisch ontwerpers uit de twintigste eeuw. Als letterontwerper drukte hij meer dan een halve eeuw zijn stempel op het Nederlandse drukwerk. Hij werkte als boekontwerper voor verschillende uitgeverijen; met name zijn Art Nouveau-banden worden nu gewaardeerd. Zijn ontwerpmodellen voor en tekstbijdragen aan de huisorganen van Lettergieterij 'Amsterdam' voorheen N. Tetterode bereikten vrijwel alle Nederlandse drukkers. Zijn werkarchief geeft een goed beeld van de ontwerppraktijk van een grafisch ontwerper in de eerste helft van de twintigste eeuw. Het is interessant voor boek- en designhistorici.

Sjoerd Hendrik de Roos (1877–1962) was one of the leading Dutch graphic designers of the twentieth century. As a type designer he left his mark on Dutch printing for over half a century. He worked as a book designer for a number of publishers; especially his Art Nouveau book bindings are now highly valued. Virtually all Dutch printers were familiar with his design models for and text contributions to the various house magazines of the Amsterdam Type Foundry Lettergieterij 'Amsterdam' voorheen N. Tetterode. His working archive gives a good idea of the design process of a graphic designer active in the first half of the twentieth century. The archive is of interest to book historians and design historians.

De Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana beheert archivalia afkomstig van de schenkers van de bibliotheek van Leeser Rosenthal en van enkele van hun nazaten. De stukken werpen licht op de Amsterdamse geschiedenis van de familie.

The Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana manages the archivalia from the donors of the library of Leeser Rosenthal and a number of their descendents. The records illuminate that part of the family history which took place in Amsterdam.

Samuel Meijer Salomons (1828-1918) werkte meer dan vijftig jaar als godsdienstonderwijzer, waarvan 28 jaar als voorzanger en godsdienstonderwijzer bij de Nederlands-Israëlitische gemeente in Kampen. In 1899, bij zijn vijfentwintigjarig ambtsjubileum, werd Salomons benoemd tot ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau. Het archief is klein en bevat vooral stukken betreffende zijn leraarschap en zijn onderscheiding. Een album met namen van oud-leerlingen maakt deel uit van het archief.

Samuel Meijer Salomons (1828-1918) worked as a teacher of religion for more than fifty years. For twenty-eight of these years, he was cantor and religious teacher for the Jewish community in Kampen. In 1899, Salomons was appointed Knight in the Order of Oranje-Nassau, in commemoration of his twenty-fifth anniversary. The archive is small and contains mainly papers relating to his teaching and his decoration. It also contains an album with names of former students.

Will van Sambeek (1935-2022) was grafisch ontwerper. Na zijn studie reisde hij naar Japan en Zwitserland, waar hij zich liet inspireren en zich ontwikkelde als grafisch ontwerper. Zijn opdrachten zijn veelzijdig en lopen uiteen van productverpakkingen van Sikkens tot herinrichting van het Tropenmuseum. In 1967 won Van Sambeek de Werkmanprijs. Het archief bestaat voornamelijk uit werk uit zijn studietijd, eindproducten en proefdrukken van diverse opdrachtgevers, en een aantal opdrachten in de privésfeer.

Will van Sambeek (1935-2022) was a graphic designer who, after having graduated, travelled to Japan and Switzerland, where he drew inspiration and developed his talents as a graphic designer. He undertook a wide variety of commissions, ranging from product packaging for Sikkens Paints to refurbishing the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam. Van Sambeek received the Werkman Prize in 1967. The archive mainly consists of work from his art academy years, end products and proofs for various clients, as well as a number of private commissions.

In de jaren tachtig van de negentiende eeuw startte Nicolaas Samsom in Alphen aan den Rijn een kleine uitgeverij die standaarddocumenten voor gemeentes uitgaf. In de decennia erna groeide dit bedrijf uit tot een grote onderneming die zich ook ging richten op drukwerk en publicaties voor wetgeving, het onderwijs en het bedrijfsleven. Inmiddels is het bedrijf meerdere keren gefuseerd en is het opgegaan in het internationaal bekende concern Wolters Kluwer.

Het archief bevat stukken over de organisatie, bedrijfsvoering, fusies, financiën, personeel, jubilea, correspondentie en producten van de uitgeverij uit de periode circa 1882-1995.

In the 1880s Nicolaas Samsom started a small publishing business based in Alphen aan den Rijn that published standard documents for municipal authorities. In the following decades the company evolved into a large firm that now also focused on print work and publications for legislation, education, and industry and commerce. The firm went through a number of mergers since and has now merged into the internationally known Wolters Kluwer information services company.

The archive contains documents on the publishing house’s organization, operational management, mergers, money management, staff, jubilees, correspondence and publications between circa 1882-1995.

Philip Abraham Samson was een vooraanstaand Surinaams jurist en historicus. De Collectie Samson in de Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana bevat een gedeelte van het materiaal dat door Samson werd verzameld. Zij geeft enerzijds een beeld van de joodse gemeenschap in Suriname in de eerste helft van de 20ste eeuw, anderzijds ook een zeer persoonlijk beeld van de verzamelaar. De collectie bevat daarnaast persoonlijke archivalia van Samson, waaronder correspondentie, teksten van lezingen, radioredes en toneelstukken van zijn hand. Daarnaast bevat de collectie stukken omtrent de Joden-Savanne en de Nederlands-Israëlitische Gemeente in Suriname.

Philip Abraham Samson was a prominent Surinamese lawyer and historian. The Samson Collection in the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana contains a portion of the material that Samson collected. It paints a picture of the Jewish community in Suriname in the first half of the twentieth century, as well as a highly personal picture of the collector. The collection also contains Samson's personal archivalia, including correspondence, the texts of lectures, radio talks and his plays. It also includes papers about the Joden-Savanne and the Dutch Israelite congregation in Suriname.

Jeannette Scheffer-Markus (1923-2016) was een van de weinige professionele boekverzorgers en letterontwerpers van haar generatie. Zij werkte tevens als docent in het kunstonderwijs. Het archief geeft evenwel uitsluitend een beeld van haar werkzaamheden als lettertekenaar. Het is interessant voor design- en kunsthistorici.

Jeannette Scheffer-Markus (1923-2016) was one of the few professional book and type designers of her generation. She also worked as a lecturer in art education. The archive, however, exclusively focuses on her activities as a lettering artist. The archive is of interest to historians of design and art historians.

Jurriaan Schrofer werd in 1926 geboren in Den Haag en begon, bij toeval, zijn loopbaan als ontwerper eind jaren 1940 als assistent van Dick Elffers. Daarna trad hij in dienst bij drukkerij Meijer te Wormerveer waar hij zich verdiepte in typografie. In de loop van zijn carrière was hij werkzaam voor de Nationale Publiciteits Onderneming (NPO), adjunct-directeur bij, docent op verschillende kunstacademies en bekleedde hij talloze bestuursfuncties.

Jurriaan Schrofer was born in The Hague in 1926. He started his career as designer in 1940 as assistant of Dick Elffers. Later on he worked for the printing office Meijer in Wormerveer, where he specialized in typography, and the Nationale Publiciteits Onderneming (NPO). He was Vice Director of Total Design and professor at several art academies.

Atie Siegenbeek van Heukelom (1913-2002) was grafisch ontwerpster en illustratrice (onder meer van kinderboeken). Daarnaast ontwierp en maakte zij borduurwerk. Naast het archief beheert het Allard Pierson een mede door haar verzamelde collectie kinderboeken.

Skript Historisch Tijdschrift is een onafhankelijk historisch-wetenschappelijk tijdschrift dat elk kwartaal verschijnt en artikelen van studenten, interviews met bekende historici en recensies publiceert. De redactie van het tijdschrift bestaat volledig uit studenten en pas-afgestudeerden. Skript werd in 1979 opgericht door studenten van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Dit archief bevat documenten die voortkwamen uit de activiteiten van de redactie, zoals vergadernotulen, correspondentie, enige toegestuurde kopij, handleidingen, promotiemateriaal en stukken ter voorbereiding van lezingen en symposia, die met enige regelmaat georganiseerd werden. Deze documenten bieden een interessante blik op de organisatie van een klein redactieteam. Het archief laat zien hoe het onderwijs en onderzoek aan Nederlandse universiteiten studenten inspireerden in hun werk.

Johan Somerwil (1926-2009) was jarenlang werkzaam voor de uitgeverijen Meulenhoff en Wolters Kluwer. Johan Somerwil (1926-2009) worked for many years for the publishing firms of Meulenhoff and Wolters Kluwer. The archive encompasses the period of his involvement in the Comité van Importeurs van Boeken en Tijdschriften (CIBT, committee of book and magazine importers), the Uitgevers Distributie Centrum (UDC, publishers’ distribution centre) and the Uitgevers Verkoop Maatschappij (UVEMA, publishers’ vending company).

Stomps, hoogleraar plantkunde aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam van 1910 tot 1945, bevat correspondentie, stukken over zijn opleiding, aantekeningen van wetenschappelijk onderzoek, materiaal betreffende publicaties en lezingen, eerbewijzen, herinneringen aan buitenlandse studiereizen, stukken over zijn colleges en (buitenlandse) excursies met studenten, alsmede over zijn directeurschap van de Hortus Botanicus. Het geeft inzicht in het werk van een Nederlands botanicus die honderden studenten geneeskunde, farmacie en plant- en dierkunde onderwees en onderzoek deed naar erfelijkheid.

The archive of Theo J. Stomps, full professor at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from 1910 until 1945, contains documents about his education, correspondence, notes of his scientific research, documents concerning publications and lectures, tokens of honour, souvenirs from his travels abroad, documents relating to his lectures for university students, and documents that followed from his directorship of the Hortus Botanicus of the University of Amsterdam. The archive illustrates the work of a Dutch botanist who trained hundreds of students of medicine, pharmacy and biology, and researched the mechanisms of heredity.

Het archief is afkomstig van de bedrijven van G.T.N. Suringar en zijn zoon Hugo, die in Leeuwarden een boekwinkel, een drukkerij/uitgeverij en een veilinghuis dreven. Het archief beslaat de periode 1809-1918. Het archief omvat onder meer circa 7000 brieven van en aan G.T.N. en Hugo Suringar en zeventien registers met uitgaande brieven van de boekhandel en uitgeverij uit de periode 1822-1882. Daarnaast zijn er administratieve stukken met betrekking tot de bedrijfsvoering van de bedrijven van G.T.N. en Hugo Suringar. The archive stems from the companies of G.T.N. Suringar and his son Hugo, who ran a bookshop, a printing and publishing house and an auction house in Leeuwarden. The archive covers the years 1809-1918 and includes some 7,000 letters by and to G.T.N. and Hugo Suringar as well as 17 registers of outgoing letters by the bookshop and publishing house dating from the years 1822-1882. In addition there are clerical documents relating to the running of the firms of G.T.N. and Hugo Suringar. A large number of manuscripts, proofs, finished books, illustration materials and brochures have survived relating to the authors who were published by father and son Suringar. The archive throws light on the organisation of a prominent nineteenth-century, mainly literary, bookshop and publishing house, on the relationship with authors and colleagues as well as the intended audience and the firm’s customers. The entire archive is available online.

Archief en muziekbibliotheek van het in 1878 opgerichte studentenmuziekgezelschap Sodalicium Studiosorum Musicum Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. De muziekbibliotheek bevat ook enkele stukken voor de Amsterdamsche Vrouwelijke Studenten Muziekvereniging AEDON, waarmee intensief werd samengewerkt.

De Swing Papa’s was een Nederlands amateur-jazzorkest dat actief was in de jaren 1935-1943. Het orkest werd opgericht door drummer Iwan Poustochkine. De band trad regelmatig op in Nederland en enkele keren in het buitenland op jazz-concoursen. De vaste bezetting wisselde in de loop der jaren en er waren vaak invallers of extra leden. Door de Duitse bezetting vanaf 1940 werd het steeds moeilijker om muziek te maken en vanaf 1943 was dit praktisch onmogelijk waardoor het orkest stopte met optreden. Het archief bestaat voornamelijk uit correspondentie uit de periode 1935-1941 die een duidelijk beeld geeft van de activiteiten van het orkest.

Founded by drummer Iwan Poustochkine, the Dutch amateur jazz orchestra The Swing Papa’s was active in the years 1935-1943. The band regularly performed in the Netherlands and occasionally took part in jazz competitions abroad. The regular line-up changed in the course of the years, with the band often taking stand-in musicians or extra members on board. The German occupation in 1940 made it increasingly difficult to play music, becoming all but impossible from 1943, so that the band stopped performing. The archive, which mainly consists of correspondence covering the years 1935-1941, provides a clear illustration of the orchestra’s activities.

De firma Tetterode, formeel bekend als Lettergieterij 'Amsterdam' voorheen N. Tetterode, was een belangrijke internationale lettergieterij en handelaar in grafische machines. Het bedrijfsarchief geeft inzicht in de activiteiten van het bedrijf bij de ontwikkeling en verkoop van lettertypes en grafische apparatuur. Als onderdeel van de Collectie Tetterode maakt het zichtbaar hoe de verschillende collecties en archieven die afkomstig zijn van Tetterode, en deel uitmaken van de collecties van de Universiteit van Amsterdam, aan elkaar gerelateerd zijn.

The Tetterode company, officially known as Lettergieterij 'Amsterdam' voorheen N. Tetterode, was a prominent international type foundry and trader in graphic machines. The company archive sheds light on its activities in developing and selling typefaces and graphic equipment. As part of the Tetterode collection, it highlights the interrelations between the various collections and archives that originate from the Tetterode company and are now part of the University of Amsterdam’s collections.

De grafisch ontwerper Otto Treumann (Fürth, Duitsland 1919 – Weesp 2001) kwam uit een liberaal-joods gezin. In 1935 vluchtte hij voor de nazi's. Hij ging lessen volgen aan de Amsterdamse Grafische School en later aan de Nieuwe Kunstschool bij Hajo Rose, waar hij door de Bauhaus-principes beïnvloed werd. Tijdens de oorlog maakte hij illegaal drukwerk, waardoor hij het drukkersvak goed onder de knie kreeg. In 1945 begon Treumann voor zichzelf. Hij ontwierp onder meer affiches voor de Bond van Nederlandse Architecten, omslagontwerpen voor het tijdschrift Rayon Revue en herdenkingszegels voor de PTT. Ook heeft hij veel ontworpen voor joodse organisaties en voor de Israëlische luchtvaartmaatschappij El Al. Daarnaast was hij voorzitter van de Gebonden Kunsten federatie (GKf).

The graphic designer Otto Treumann (Fürth, Germany 1919 – Weesp 2001) came from a liberal Jewish family. In 1935, he fled from the Nazis. He started taking classes at the Amsterdamse Grafische School and later at the Nieuwe Kunstschool with Hajo Rose, where he was influenced by the Bauhaus principles. During the war, he created illegal printings, giving him good skills in the printing profession. In 1945, Treumann started his own business. Among much else, he designed posters for the Bond van Nederlandse Architecten (Association of Dutch Architects), front covers for the magazine Rayon Revue, memorial stamps for the Dutch postal service. He also made many of designs for Jewish organisations and for the Israeli airline company El Al. In addition, he was chairman of the Gebonden Kunsten Federatie (Federation of Applied Arts) (GKf).
