Philosophy

Cornelis Bellaar Spruyt werd in 1877 aangesteld als hoogleraar in de filosofie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Hij ontwikkelde zich tot een aanhanger van Kant. Daarnaast toonde hij een sterke betrokkenheid bij zaken van nationaal belang, zoals uitbreiding van het kiesrecht en algemene dienstplicht. Als secretaris van de Nederlandsch Zuid-Afrikaansche Vereeniging zette hij zich in voor de Boeren in Zuid-Afrika. Het archief bevat een complete weerslag van de activiteiten van C. Bellaar Spruyt vanaf zijn studiejaren tot zijn overlijden, zowel wat betreft zijn studie, zijn hoogleraarschap als zijn politieke activiteiten.

Cornelis Bellaar Spruyt was appointed professor of philosophy at the University of Amsterdam in 1877. He was an adherent of the philosophy of Immanuel Kant and expressed a strong interest in matters of national importance, such as the extension of the right to vote and compulsory military service. In his position as secretary of the Dutch South-African Association he labored for the South-African Boers. The archive reflects his activities very accurately and completely from the time he started studying until his death in 1901, with regard to his study and professorship as well as in his political activities.

Het Rijksdeel Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica (BPH) is een unieke verzameling van circa 4400 zeldzame manuscripten en gedrukte werken over de hermetische traditie. Dit is een verzamelnaam voor filosofisch-religieuze en praktisch-esoterische teksten die zijn ontstaan in het hellenistische Egypte, en die hun ingang vonden in zowel de joodse, christelijke als Arabische cultuur. De bibliotheek is ontstaan uit de privécollectie van de Amsterdamse ondernemer Joost Ritman.

The Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica State collection is a unique collection of c. 4,400 rare manuscripts and printed works relating to the hermetic tradition. This is an umbrella term for a number of philosophical and religious and esoteric and practical texts that originated in Hellenistic Egypt and were assimilated into Jewish, Christian and Arabic traditions. The Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica grew out of the private collection of Amsterdam businessman Joost Ritman.

Carry van Bruggen is een van de belangrijkste Nederlandse schrijfsters uit het begin van de twintigste eeuw en wordt sinds de tweede feministische golf beschouwd als een boegbeeld van de vrouwenemancipatie. Haar bekendste werken zijn het filosofische essay Prometheus en de roman Eva. Het archief (1921-1933) bestaat uit stukken betreffende haar depressie, uit aantekeningen en manuscripten en een aantal knipsels en recensies.

Carry van Bruggen is one of the major Dutch writers of the early twentieth century. Since the Second Feminist Wave, she is regarded as one of the leaders of women’s emancipation in the Netherlands. Her best known works are the philosophical essay Prometheus and the novel Eva. The archive (1921-1933) consists of items relating to her depression, as well as notes and manuscripts and a number of clippings and reviews.

Het archief van het Genootschap voor Wetenschappelijke Filosofie is onderdeel van de Wijsgerige Collectie van het Allard Pierson. Het bevat stukken betreffende het bestuur en de organisatie van het genootschap alsmede verslagen en stukken betreffende de voorbereiding van bijeenkomsten.

The archive of the Genootschap voor Wetenschappelijke Filosofie (a society for the science of philosophy) is part of the Philosophy Collection (Wijsgerige Collectie) of the Allard Pierson. It contains items on the governance and organisation of the society as well as transcripts and documents relating to the preparation of meetings.

Hendrik Josephus Pos (1898-1955) was hoogleraar taalwetenschap en filosofie, eerst aan de Vrije Universiteit, later aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Zijn archief bestaat enerzijds uit manuscripten en kopij, anderzijds uit correspondentie en ander archiefmateriaal; het geheel geeft een weerslag van zijn activiteiten op academisch, bestuurlijk en maatschappelijk terrein. Het archief van Pos maakt deel uit van de Wijsgerige Verzameling van de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

Hendrik Josephus Pos (1898-1955) was a linguistics and philosophy professor, first at Amsterdam’s Vrije Universiteit, later at the University of Amsterdam. One part of his archive contains manuscripts and copy texts, the other part correspondence and other archival documents; as a whole, the archive reflects his activities in the academic, managerial and social fields. Pos’s archive is part of the University of Amsterdam’s Wijsgerige Verzameling (philosophical collection).

Het archief van P.J. Schroevers is een onderdeel van de collectie van de Heimans en Thijsse Stichting te Amsterdam. Het bevat stukken op het gebied van zijn werkgebieden: de hydrobiologie en ecologie. Op deze gebieden was hij een belangrijk theoreticus en actievoerder. Hij was werkzaam bij het RIVON (Rijksinstituut voor Veldbiologisch Onderzoek ten behoeve van het Natuurbehoud) en was lid van de Werkgroep Biologische Waterbeoordeling (nu de Werkgroep Ecologisch Waterbeheer) en de Werkgemeenschap Landschapsecologisch Onderzoek.

The archive of P.J. Schroevers is part of the collection of the Heimans en Thijsse Stichting in Amsterdam. It contains material pertaining to his fields of work: hydrobiology and ecology. He was a major theoretician and activist in these fields. He worked for the RIVON (Rijksinstituut voor Veldbiologisch Onderzoek ten behoeve van het Natuurbehoud) and was a member of the Werkgroep Biologische Waterbeoordeling (now Werkgroep Ecologisch Waterbeheer) and the Werkgemeenschap Landschapsecologisch Onderzoek. These institutes / work groups all work for the benefit of the environment or the landscape.
