Biographical / Historical

Initiated by the Dutch antiquarian bookseller and president of the Dutch Association of Antiquarian Booksellers, Menno Hertzberger, a preliminary conference was held in Amsterdam in 1947 prior to the establishment of an international organisation of antiquarians: the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB) or Ligue Internationale de la Librairie Ancienne (LILA).

The oldest national organisation was the British 'Antiquarian Booksellers' Association', established in 1906. In the course of the following decades organisations of antiquarians were established in most European countries and sometimes outside Europe.

With his initiative Hertzberger aimed at restoration and intensifying of international cooperation, particularly in the trade in antiquarian books.

The first international conference of ILAB was held in Copenhagen in 1948. In the following years annual conferences were organised in various cities. Since 1966 ILAB organizes an international book fair next to the international conference.

In 1951-1952 ILAB published a directory and in 1956 a dictionary was published, edited by Hertzberger: Dictionary for the antiquarian booktrade in French, English, German, Swedish, Danish, Italian, Spanish and Dutch.

In 1951 a code of conduct was adopted and later a register of stolen books was kept.

The archives themselves were created by the subsequent presidents and secretaries-general of the organisation, sometimes by the presidents, sometimes by the secretaries-general. Before the archives were transferred to the Special Collections they were in the possession of Gerits.
