The collection brought together by graphic designer Atie Siegenbeek van Heukelom (1913-2002) consists of books of prints, books and brochures. Siegenbeek van Heukelom freelanced for publishing houses, designing the layout for books and illustrating volumes of poetry, school books and children’s books. She collected the children’s books that were a source of inspiration to her.

Harry N. Sierman schonk in 2003 zijn archief aan de Bijzondere Collecties van de Universiteit van Amsterdam, nu onderdeel van het Allard Pierson. Dit bevat met name schetsen, ontwerpen en zetinstructies. Ook is toen een groot aantal gedrukte werken overgedragen, waaruit een selectie is gemaakt. Sierman was een van de toonaangevende boekontwerpers van zijn generatie. Het archief is van groot belang voor de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse grafische ontwerpen in de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw.

Harry N. Sierman donated his archive to Amsterdam University’s Special Collections, now part of the Allard Pierson, in 2003. The collection notably includes sketches, designs and typesetting instructions. A large number of printed works were also transferred at the time, a selection of which was retained. Sierman was one of the leading book designers of his generation. The archive is of major importance for the history of Dutch graphic design in the second half of the twentieth century.

De collectie heeft betrekking op de nauw met elkaar verweven families Singendonck en Van der Brugghen. De eerste schenking aan de Stichting Het Réveil-Archief betrof de Réveilfiguur Johan Anne Singendonck (1809-1893) maar latere schenkingen en aankopen maakten dat de collectie steeds meer het karakter van een familiearchief kreeg. Het materiaal gaat terug tot de zeventiende eeuw. Naast officiële stukken en brieven bevat de collectie de uit 1663 daterende familiebijbel van de Singendoncks.

The collection concerns the two closely intertwined families Singendonck and Van der Brugghen. The first donation to the Stichting Het Réveil-Archief, the society founded to collect Réveil material, concerned Johan Anne Singendonck (1809-1893), but the donations that followed turned the collection more and more into a family archive. The material dates back as far as the seventeenth century. Besides official documents and letters, the collection contains the Singendonck family bible dating from 1663.

De Amsterdamse hoogleraar Jan Six (1857-1926), een telg uit de adellijke familie Six van Hillegom, was een man met vele interesses en een groot verzamelaar. Naast kunst, kostuums, glas en antiek aardewerk, verzamelde hij middeleeuwse handschriften, incunabelen, oude en moderne drukken, waaronder grote plaatwerken. Veel hiervan gebruikte hij voor zijn colleges. Vooral de onderwerpen antieke kunst en archeologie zijn in de collectie ruimschoots vertegenwoordigd. De collectie bevat veel unieke werken.

The Amsterdam professor Jan Six (1857-1926) was born into the aristocratic Six van Hillegom family. He was a man of many interests and an avid collector. In addition to art, costumes, glass and antique pottery, he collected medieval manuscripts, incunables and early and modern printed books, including large plate books. Many of them were used to illustrate his lectures. The collection is especially rich on the subjects of antique art and archeology and contains many unique works.

Ko Sliggers (1952-2022) was als ontwerper vooral bekend van zijn lettertypen Dutchfonts en zijn ontwerpen voor theatergezelschappen en musea. Zijn archief bevat onder meer ontwerpen en werktekeningen, correspondentie en bewijsexemplaren.

As a designer, Ko Sliggers (1952-2022) was mainly known for his Dutchfonts typefaces and his designs for theatre companies and museums. His archive includes designs and work sketches, correspondence and copies of his work.

Johan Somerwil (1926-2009) worked for many years for the publishing firms of Meulenhoff and Wolters Kluwer. The archive encompasses the period of his involvement in the Comité van Importeurs van Boeken en Tijdschriften (CIBT, committee of book and magazine importers), the Uitgevers Distributie Centrum (UDC, publishers’ distribution centre) and the Uitgevers Verkoop Maatschappij (UVEMA, publishers’ vending company).

Deze middelkleine collectie van circa 750 kaarten, merendeels uit de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw, heeft betrekking op (West-)Europa met een sterk accent op stadsplattegronden.

Stichting Speurwerk betreffende het Boek (SSB) was an agency set up by the Vereeniging ter Bevordering van de Belangen des Boekhandels (association for the promotion of booksellers’ interests) to research various aspects of the book market regarding consumer behaviour as well as the position of the several trade organisations (publishing, bookselling, distribution).

De papieren nalatenschap van Jan Stals (1892-1969) bestaat grotendeels uit ongepubliceerde manuscripten van Franse gedichten en vertalingen van toneel en poëzie in het Frans; daarnaast documentatie in de vorm van knipsels, onder meer met betrekking tot de Vondel-receptie in Frankrijk. Verder enkele manuscripten en verwante egodocumenten, en documentatie met betrekking tot de door Jan Stals gemaakte Franse Vondelvertalingen.

The documentary legacy of Jan Stals (1892-1969) consists mainly of unpublished manuscripts of French poetry and translations of French drama and poetry. Besides this, there are documents about the reception of the work of the Dutch writer and poet Joost van den Vondel and several manuscripts, personal papers and documentation about the French Vondel translations made by Jan Stals.

De tekeningen en cartoons van Spier verschenen vanaf de jaren twintig van de vorige eeuw regelmatig in De Telegraaf en konden op veel waardering rekenen waarna hij ook werd ingeschakeld om advertenties voor het bedrijfsleven te maken. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog verhuisde Spier naar de Verenigde Staten maar bleef tekeningen maken voor Nederlandse media en bedrijven.

This collection contains the work of the well-known Dutch illustrator Jo Spier (1900-1978) and was brought together by the Haarlem antiquarian bookseller Ab van der Steur (1938-2012). The collection includes volumes of publications by Spier, commissioned illustrations made for the work of clients and ephemeral printed work such as advertisements and brochures.

From the 1920s, Spier’s drawings and cartoons were regularly published in the newspaper De Telegraaf and were well received. His popularity earned him commissions for advertisements from commercial clients. After WWII Spier moved to the United States, but he continued to produce drawings for Dutch media and companies.

De Stichting Wetenschappelijk Duinonderzoek (SWD, 1948–1980) had als doel het bevorderen en coördineren van biologisch en geomorfologisch onderzoek van de duinen en aangrenzende kustgebieden in Nederland. Daartoe richtte de SWD biologische onderzoekstations in op Voorne (Weevers’ Duin) en Terschelling (Schellingerland). De SWD verstrekte subsidies voor (promotie)onderzoek gericht op flora, fauna en maritiem-geologische onderwerpen. Ze verkreeg haar inkomsten door donaties van particulieren en instellingen, uit de exploitatie van de onderzoekstations en door subsidies van de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Zuiver-Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (ZWO). In 1958 droeg de SWD het beheer van Weevers’ Duin over aan het Instituut voor Oecologisch Onderzoek (IOO) en in 1959 dat van Schellingerland aan het Rijksinstituut voor Veldbiologisch Onderzoek ten behoeve van het Natuurbehoud (RIVON). De SWD bleef een stimulerende en coördinerende rol spelen bij het duinonderzoek vanuit de beide onderzoekstations. Het archief bestaat in hoofdzaak uit stukken die betrekking hebben op het ontstaan en functioneren van de SWD en van de beide onderzoekstations. Vermeldenswaard zijn de geïllustreerde gastenboeken van het biologisch station Schellingerland. Voorts bevat het archief rapporteringen van systematische waarnemingen van flora en (avi)fauna op Terschelling uit de jaren 1957–1983.

The Stichting Wetenschappelijk Duinonderzoek (SWD, a foundation for scientific research into dunes, 1948–1980) was set up to promote and coordinate biological and geomorphological research into the dunes and adjoining coastal areas in the Netherlands. To this end the SWD established biological field stations in Voorne in the province of South Holland (Weevers’ Duin) and on the island of Terschelling (Schellingerland). The SWD provided grants for research, including PhD studies, into flora, fauna and marine geology subjects. The foundation’s income came from private and institutional donors, the running of the field stations and funding from the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Zuiver-Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (ZWO, the Netherlands Organization for Pure Scientific Research). In 1958 the SWD transferred the management of Weevers’ Duin to the Instituut voor Oecologisch Onderzoek (IOO, the Institute for Ecological Research), and in 1959 it transferred that of Schellingerland to the Rijksinstituut voor Veldbiologisch Onderzoek ten behoeve van het Natuurbehoud (RIVON). The SWD continued to stimulate and coordinate dune research within the two field stations. The archive mainly consists of documents relating to the origin and functioning of the SWD and the two field stations. The illustrated guest books of the Schellingerland biological station are particularly noteworthy. The archive furthermore contains reports of systematic observations of plants, animals and birds at Terschelling in the years 1957–1983.

Stomps, hoogleraar plantkunde aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam van 1910 tot 1945, bevat correspondentie, stukken over zijn opleiding, aantekeningen van wetenschappelijk onderzoek, materiaal betreffende publicaties en lezingen, eerbewijzen, herinneringen aan buitenlandse studiereizen, stukken over zijn colleges en (buitenlandse) excursies met studenten, alsmede over zijn directeurschap van de Hortus Botanicus. Het geeft inzicht in het werk van een Nederlands botanicus die honderden studenten geneeskunde, farmacie en plant- en dierkunde onderwees en onderzoek deed naar erfelijkheid.

The archive of Theo J. Stomps, full professor at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from 1910 until 1945, contains documents about his education, correspondence, notes of his scientific research, documents concerning publications and lectures, tokens of honour, souvenirs from his travels abroad, documents relating to his lectures for university students, and documents that followed from his directorship of the Hortus Botanicus of the University of Amsterdam. The archive illustrates the work of a Dutch botanist who trained hundreds of students of medicine, pharmacy and biology, and researched the mechanisms of heredity.

Daarnaast is Peter van Straaten bekend van zijn politieke cartoons, voornamelijk gepubliceerd in Vrij Nederland, zijn erotische tekeningen, gepubliceerd in verschillende bundels, zijn boekillustraties en zijn columns. Naast originele tekeningen bevat dit archief ook correspondentie, schriftjes uit zijn jeugd en foto’s.

This archive contains original drawings by writer and cartoonist Peter van Straaten (1935-2016). He is well-known for his Vader & Zoon (Father & Son) comic series (1969-1987) and his daily comic strip Dagelijks Leven (Daily Life), which was published in the Dutch newspaper Het Parool. A daily tear off calendar featuring his Dagelijks Leven drawings was published from 1994. Peter van Straaten is also known for his political cartoons, which were mainly featured in the weekly magazine Vrij Nederland, his erotic drawings, published in several volumes, his book illustrations and his columns. In addition to original drawings, the archive contains correspondence, childhood notebooks and photographs.

Het Sociografisch dispuut S.T.R.A.B.O. werd opgericht in 1952 als dispuut van de Amsterdamse Studentenvereniging voor Sociographie (A.S.V.S.). Het archief van S.T.R.A.B.O. bevat onder andere het secretariaatsarchief, correspondentie, notulen en verslagen vanaf de oprichting tot de opheffing in 1967.

S.T.R.A.B.O. was founded in 1952 as the debating society of the Amsterdamse Studentenvereniging voor Sociographie, the student union for social demography (ASVS). The collection contains among other things the archive of the secretarial office, correspondence, minutes and reports, all from the day it was founded until it was discontinued in 1967.

Het Stripdocumentatiecentrum Nederland (SDCN) is een van de grootste openbare stripcollecties in Nederland. Het werd opgericht door Het Stripschap en de Universiteitsbibliotheek in 1970 en documenteert de geschiedenis van de strip in Nederland. De collectie bevat strips, striptijdschriften en krantenknipsels over strips en archieven van striptekenaars. Er is ook veel secundaire literatuur aanwezig, evenals originele tekeningen. Daaronder bijna alle Dick Bos-verhalen door Alfred Mazure (MAZ) en tekeningen van diverse andere bekende striptekenaars.

Het Stripschap is een vereniging die de kennis van en de waardering voor de strip in het algemeen en de Nederlandse strip in het bijzonder wil bevorderen. Het archief bevat correspondentie en andere documenten die de weerslag vormen van de activiteiten van deze vereniging.

Boekbanden verzameld door de uitgever Albert S.A. Struik (1926-2006). De collectie bevat ruim 7000 Nederlandse industriële boekbanden uit de periode 1837-1940, waaronder circa 1000 kinderboeken. Zij vormt een belangrijk onderdeel van een unieke collectie machinaal vervaardigde boekbanden die onderzoek mogelijk maakt naar de productie en vormgeving van de boekband in de negentiende en de eerste helft van de twintigste eeuw in Nederland.

This collection of industrial bookbindings brought together by publisher Albert S.A. Struik (1926-2006) contains over 7,000 Dutch industrial bookbindings from the years 1837-1940, including some 1,000 children’s books. It is a substantial part of a unique collection of machine-made bookbindings, which facilitates research into the production and design of bookbindings in the Netherlands in the second half of the 19th and first half of the twentieth century.

De Studenten Sociëteit Olofspoort werd in 1951 opgericht als alternatief voor de gezelligheidsverenigingen, die allen waren aangesloten bij de corpora of de Unitas Studiosorum Amstelodamensium (USA). Het archief bestaat uit notulen, correspondentie, financiële stukken, foto's en ledenlijsten. De vereniging werd in 1970 opgeheven.

The Studenten Sociëteit Olofspoort (Olofspoort Student Society) was founded in 1951 as an alternative for the sociable clubs that were all associated with the student corporations or the Unitas Studiosorum Amstelodamensium (USA). The archive incorporates minutes, correspondence, financial documents, photographs and member lists. The society was disbanded in 1970.

Het studentengezelschap Ingenium Acuunt Artes Amicitiam Alunt (I.A.A.A.A. of ook wel I.A.) werd in 1802 opgericht door negen studenten die letterkunde of geschiedenis studeerden. Het archief bestaat voor het grootste deel uit notulen, wetten en theses. Het voornaamste doel van het gezelschap was het opponeren tegen en defenderen van Latijnsche theses, die over literaire, kritische, historische en filosofische onderwerpen moesten gaan.

The student society Ingenium Acuunt Artes Amicitiam Alunt (I.A.A.A. or also I.A.) was founded in 1802 by nine students, studying literature or history. The archive consists mainly of minutes, laws and theses. The main purpose of the society was to oppose and defend Latin theses about literary, critical, historical and philosophical subjects.

De collectie van de Studievereniging voor Psychical Research bevat hoofdzakelijk publicaties op het gebied van parapsychologie, spiritisme en astrologie. Met uitzondering van de tijdschriften dateert de collectie van na 1945.

The collection of the Studievereniging voor Psychical Research (Society for Psychical Research) mainly contains publications in the fields of parapsychology, spiritualism and astrology. With the exception of the periodicals, the collection dates from after 1945.

Het archief is afkomstig van de bedrijven van G.T.N. Suringar en zijn zoon Hugo, die in Leeuwarden een boekwinkel, een drukkerij/uitgeverij en een veilinghuis dreven. Het archief beslaat de periode 1809-1918. Het archief omvat onder meer circa 7000 brieven van en aan G.T.N. en Hugo Suringar en zeventien registers met uitgaande brieven van de boekhandel en uitgeverij uit de periode 1822-1882. Daarnaast zijn er administratieve stukken met betrekking tot de bedrijfsvoering van de bedrijven van G.T.N. en Hugo Suringar. Een groot aantal manuscripten, drukproeven, uiteindelijke drukken, illustratiemateriaal en prospectussen is overgeleverd van de door vader en zoon Suringar uitgegeven auteurs. Het archief biedt inzicht in de organisatie van een vooraanstaande negentiende-eeuwse, voornamelijk literair getinte boekhandel en uitgeverij, in de relatie met auteurs en collega's, alsmede in het beoogde publiek en de klantenkring in de firma. The archive stems from the companies of G.T.N. Suringar and his son Hugo, who ran a bookshop, a printing and publishing house and an auction house in Leeuwarden. The archive covers the years 1809-1918 and includes some 7,000 letters by and to G.T.N. and Hugo Suringar as well as 17 registers of outgoing letters by the bookshop and publishing house dating from the years 1822-1882. In addition there are clerical documents relating to the running of the firms of G.T.N. and Hugo Suringar. A large number of manuscripts, proofs, finished books, illustration materials and brochures have survived relating to the authors who were published by father and son Suringar. The archive throws light on the organisation of a prominent nineteenth-century, mainly literary, bookshop and publishing house, on the relationship with authors and colleagues as well as the intended audience and the firm’s customers.
