Constructietekeningen voor apparatuur voor thermodynamisch onderzoek, uitgevoerd in de periode ca. 1928-1956, onder leiding van A.M.J.F. Michels, hoogleraar aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Het onderzoek had als doel de theorieën van zijn voorganger en Nobelprijswinnaar Johannes Diderik van der Waals te onderbouwen en uit te breiden.

The collection consists of drawings for the construction of instruments which were used for thermodynamic research. This research was carried out between 1928 and 1956 under the leadership of A.M.J.F. Michels, who was a professor at the University of Amsterdam. His research supported and expanded the theories of his predecessor, the Nobel prize winner Johannes Diderik van der Waals.

This collection of some 2,500 maps and leaflets, largely dating from the second half of the twentieth century, focuses on signposting and the design of cartographic materials. The maps served as a model and source of inspiration for designer, lecturer and graphic designer Paul Mijksenaar.

De Modern Jazz Club Persepolis in Utrecht bestond van 1957 tot 1967. De club werd door een groep vrienden opgericht. De eerste anderhalf jaar was zij gevestigd in een schuur in de Grasstraat, vanaf 1959 in een kelder op de Oudegracht 205. Het lukte de organisatie al snel na de oprichting om gevestigde Nederlandse en buitenlandse artiesten te boeken waardoor de club een nationale en internationale bekendheid verwierf. Door de afname in populariteit van jazz sloot het podium in 1967 de deuren. Het archief bestaat voornamelijk uit financiële administratie, krantenknipsels en foto’s die inzicht in het beheer van de club en informatie over de optredens geven.

Collectie van 91 middeleeuwse handschriften en incunabelen, voornamelijk in het Middelnederlands, verzameld door de Amsterdamse kerkhistoricus Willem Moll (1812-1879). Collection of 91 medieval manuscripts and incunables, mainly in Dutch, brought together by the Amsterdam church historian Willem Moll (1812-1879). The collection was acquired in 1880 and forms the nucleus of the collection of medieval manuscripts of the University of Amsterdam. The manuscripts contain texts that are of great importance especially for studying late-medieval spiritual life in the Low Countries.

Mozes Monasch (1852-1915) werd in 1885 drie jaar na het behalen van zijn moree-titel aan het Nederlands-Israëlitisch Seminarium (NIS) in Amsterdam conrector van deze theologische opleiding. Deze functie verruilde hij in 1905 voor het ambt van opperrabbijn. Hij werd geïnstalleerd als opperrabbijn van de ressorten Drenthe en Utrecht. Naast zijn rabbinale werk publiceerde Monasch een aantal historische werken. Het archief van Mozes Monasch bestaat voornamelijk uit preken. Ook zijn er personalia en aantekeningen met betrekking tot onderzoek, lezingen en vergaderingen in het archief aanwezig.

In 1885, three years after receiving his moré diploma from the Amsterdam Rabbinical Seminary (NIS), Mozes Monasch (1852-1915) became vice-rector of the same theological programme. In 1905, he left this job to become chief rabbi, and was installed in the synagogue districts of Drenthe and Utrecht. In addition to his rabbinical work, Monasch published a number of historical works. The archive of Mozes Monasch consists largely of sermons, although it also includes personalia and notes relating to his research, lectures and meetings.

De kaarten zijn voornamelijk afkomstig van Nederlandse atlassen uit de zestiende, zeventiende en achttiende eeuw. De collectie is vanwege de talloze varianten in tekst, zetsel, impressum en drukplaat van groot carto-bibliografisch belang.

This collection of maps was bought in 1910 as part of the stock of the famous Amsterdam antiquarian bookshop 'Fred. Muller & Co'. The maps are mainly from Dutch atlases from the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Besides this, there are many independently published maps and maps of foreign origin. The collection is of major cartographic importance because of the numerous variations in text, type, imprint and printing plate.

The collection of the Multatuli Genootschap (Multatuli Society) contains manuscripts and printed material of and about the Dutch writer Multatuli, pseudonym of Eduard Douwes Dekker (1820-1887). The Genootschap started in 1946 and was the successor of the Vereeniging het Multatuli Museum (Society of the Multatuli Museum), founded in 1910. The collection comprises circa 80 manuscripts (among which the Max Havelaar), circa 3800 letters, circa 1400 iconographic items, printed books and documentation. The collection gives a thorough and almost complete impression of Multatuli's life and works. It is one of the larger collections on one author in the Netherlands and is still growing.

De collectie bevat een aantal unieke deelcollecties zoals het geluidsarchief van het Bimhuis te Amsterdam, de collectie van Michiel de Ruyter, de cassetteopnamen van Jacques Waisvisz en de documentatie van Paul Acket, organisator van concerten.

The Dutch Jazz Archive (NJA) was founded in 1980. The main purpose was to capture the history of Dutch Jazz from around 1900 and to collect jazz material and make this available. The collection consists of unique recordings on different formats among them: reel-to-reel tapes, cassettes, lp's, ep's, 78 rpm. Books, periodicals, documentation, photos, videos and sheet music are part of the collection. The collection contains unique material e.g. the sound archive of jazz theater the Bimhuis In Amsterdam, the collection of jazz promoter Michiel de Ruyter, the field recordings on cassette by Jacques Waisvisz and the archive of concert producer Paul Acket.

One of the founders of the Nederlandsch Genootschap tot Zedelijke Verbetering der Gevangenen, a society set up in 1823 to help rehabilitate prisoners, was Willem Hendrik Suringar, who bequeathed his collection to the society. Some of the topics dealt with are criminal law and the administration of criminal justice. The collection also contains religious works and school books.

Zo'n veertig procent van het geheel bestaat uit schoolboeken voor lager en middelbaar onderwijs, vooral Nederlandse drukken. Alle schoolvakken zijn vertegenwoordigd, meestal met opeenvolgende drukken. Ook zijn er boeken te vinden over pedagogiek, psychologie en didactiek. Verder zijn er kinderboeken, (wand)platen en tijdschriften. Het schoolboek is een stille getuige van kennis, beelden, begrippen, ideeën, waarden en normen die in een bepaalde periode een rol spelen. Deze collectie bestrijkt een lange, aaneengesloten periode en dekt alle schoolvakken. Daarom is ze van grote cultuurhistorische waarde en onmisbaar voor onderzoek naar de geschiedenis van onderwijs en opvoeding.

The 'Nederlandsch Schoolmuseum' (Dutch Schoolmuseum) opened in 1877 with the aim to collect new educational tools. The collection now consists of 98,000 books dating from 1600-2000, 12,000 of which were published in the 19th century and 175 in the 17th and 18th centuries. About 40% of the collection consists of Dutch textbooks for primary and secondary education. All school subjects are covered, often with consecutive editions. Besides this, there are books on pedagogy, psychology and didactics. There are also about 7000 children's books, wall charts and many periodicals. Textbooks are the silent witnesses of knowledge, images, concepts, opinions and standards that were predominant in the past. This collection covers a long and continuous period and all school subjects. As such, the collection is of major importance to understand history and culture in the Netherlands and indispensable for research into the history of education and teaching.

De Nederlandsche Evangelisch-Protestantsche Vereeniging (NEPV) bestond van 1854 tot 1948. Het doel van de vereniging was aanvankelijk het terugdringen van de invloed van de Rooms-Katholieke Kerk en het oprukkende ongeloof maar werd later beperkt tot het uitdragen van het Evangelie. De connectie met de protestantse opwekkingsbeweging het Réveil bestond erin dat in het eerste bestuur van de vereniging verscheidene toonaangevende Réveilfiguren zoals Abraham Capadose zitting namen. Het archief bevat stukken betreffende het bestuur en de financiën van de vereniging en de correspondentie met de evangelisten.

The Nederlandsche Evangelisch-Protestantsche Vereeniging (the Dutch Evangelical Protestant Association) existed from 1854 to 1948. At first the NEPV aimed to drive back the influence of the Roman-Catholic Church and the increasing amount of irreligion, but later onwards this was limited to spreading the Gospel. The NEPV was connected to the Protestant revival movement Réveil in the sense that several leading figures of the Réveil, such as Abraham Capadose, were on the first board of directors of the NEPV. The archive consists of material about the board of governors, financial documents and correspondence with the evangelists.

Het archief van de Nederlandsche Vereeniging van Antiquaren (1935-2000) is weliswaar fragmentarisch overgeleverd maar geeft toch een goed beeld van de geschiedenis van de NVvA, onder andere van haar rol bij de oprichting van de internationale organisatie van antiquaren ILAB.

De afdeling organiseerde in dit kader propaganda- en cursusvergaderingen met sprekers. De correspondentie in het archief geeft een goed beeld van de werkzaamheden van de afdeling en de contacten met de andere stedelijke afdelingen en de landelijke organisatie van de NZSO.

The objective of the Amsterdam chapter of the Dutch Zionist Student Organisation (NZSO), which was established in 1909, was to propagate Zionism among Jewish students. To this end, the chapter organised propaganda meetings and courses with speakers. The correspondence in the archive provides a clear picture of the activities of the chapter and its contacts with chapters in other cities, as well as with the national NZSO organisation.

De in juli 1908 opgerichte Nederlandse Zionistische Studenten Organisatie voorzag in de behoefte aan gecentraliseerde propaganda voor het zionisme onder joodse studenten in Nederland. De studentenorganisatie richtte in de verschillende universiteitssteden aparte afdelingen op en organiseerde interacademiale bijeenkomsten, lezingen en kampen. Ook bracht zij het 'Jaarboek van de Nederlandsche Zionistische Studentenorganisatie' en het maandblad 'Hatikwah' uit. Het archief van het bestuur van de NZSO geeft een goed beeld van de werkzaamheden van de organisatie.

Founded in July 1908, the Dutch Zionist Student Organisation (NZSO) fulfilled a need among Jewish students in the Netherlands for centralised propaganda about Zionism. It established separate chapters in the various university cities and organised interuniversity meetings, lectures and camps. The NZSO also published the Yearbook of the Dutch Zionist Student Organisation and Hatikwah, a monthly magazine. The archive of the NZSO board provides a good overview of the organisation's activities.

De Amsterdamse Studenten Roeivereniging Nereus werd in 1885 opgericht als subvereniging van het Amsterdamsch Studenten Corps (A.S.C.). Nereusleden nemen regelmatig en met veel succes deel aan internationale wedstrijden, waaronder de Olympische Spelen. In 1969 trad Nereus uit het Corps. In 1971 fuseerde de vereniging met Thetis, de in 1933 opgerichte Amsterdamsche Vrouwelijke Studenten Roeivereeniging. De collectie bestaat grotendeels uit foto's, medailles en gedenkpenningen.

Nereus, the rowing club for students in Amsterdam, was founded in 1885 as a subdivision of the ASC, the Amsterdam Student Union. Members of Nereus often and with success take part in international contests, among which the Olympic Games. In 1969 Nereus left the student union and a few years later, in 1973, it merged with Thetis, the rowing club for female students in Amsterdam. The collection consists mainly of photographs, medallions and commemorative medals.

Nescio werd als Jan Hendrik Frederik Grönloh geboren in 1882 en overleed in 1961. Hij was werkzaam als procuratiehouder bij een handelsfirma, maar zijn grote liefde lag bij de literatuur. In 1911 debuteerde hij in De Gids met zijn beroemde verhaal over de zwerver Japi, De Uitvreter. Ook de verhalen Dichtertje, Titaantjes en Mene Tekel zijn zeer geliefd geworden. In zijn sterfjaar verscheen nog een bundel korte verhalen onder de titel Boven het dal. In 1996 kwam daar nog het Natuurdagboek bij. De collectie bevat onder meer uitgaven van het werk van Nescio, secundaire literatuur, beeldmateriaal en enkele manuscripten.

Nescio was born as Jan Hendrik Frederik Grönloh in 1882 and died in 1961. He worked as a managing clerk for the Holland-Bombay Trading Company, but literature was his enduring passion. He debuted in the literary magazine De Gids in 1911 with his famous story of the vagabond Japi, De Uitvreter (The Sponger). The stories Dichtertje (Little Poet), Titaantjes (Young Titans) and Mene Tekel also gained great popularity. A volume of short stories entitled Boven het dal (Above the Valley) appeared in the year he died. Finally in 1996 his Natuurdagboek (Nature Diary) was published. The collection includes editions of Nescio’s works, secondary literature, visual material and a few manuscripts.

De ruim 50.000 foto’s in deze collectie zijn afkomstig uit het bezit van het in 1865 opgerichte Nieuw Israëlietisch Weekblad (NIW). Ze geven een goed beeld van de belangstelling voor het Nederlandse en internationaal georiënteerde Joodse leven. Bijna de helft van de opnamen is gemaakt in Nederland; ongeveer een derde in het huidige Israël. De collectie is opgebouwd vanaf 1921, toen de eerste foto in het NIW gepubliceerd werd, en beslaat analoge foto’s en negatieven uit de periode 1850-2007, zij het met de nadruk op naoorlogse foto’s. Van het vooroorlogse Joodse leven bewijzen een kleine duizend foto’s. Bijna driekwart van het materiaal is nooit gepubliceerd in het NIW, en van een derde is de naam van de fotograaf bekend. In het Kenniscentrum van het Joods Museum (Amsterdam) is de collectie digitaal te raadplegen.

This collection containing over 50,000 photos is derived from Nieuw Israëlietisch Weekblad (NIW), a periodical founded in 1865. The photos offer a good impression of the interest in Jewish life in the Netherlands and elsewhere. Almost half of the photos were taken in the Netherlands; about one third in present-day Israel. The collection was started in 1921, when NIW featured its first photograph, and contains analogue photographs and negatives from the period 1850-2007, though with an emphasis on post-war photographs. Jewish life before WWII is documented in around a thousand photographs. Almost three quarters of the material was never published in NIW; of one third of the material the photographer’s name is known. The collection can be viewed online at the Resource centre of the Jewish Cultural Quarter (Amsterdam).
