Wissing, Benno, 1923-2008

Benno Wissing (1923-2008) werkte als schilder, tekenaar, decorontwerper en graficus maar koos er uiteindelijk voor zich toe te leggen op het ontwerpvak. Hij vond de beeldende kunst te geïsoleerd en was van mening dat je als ontwerper meer voor de samenleving kon betekenen. Veel van zijn opdrachtgevers kwamen uit de (Rotterdamse) culturele sector. In 1963 was Wissing betrokken bij de oprichting van Total Design. In 1978 vertrok hij naar de USA en bleef ontwerpen. Het grootste deel van het archief bestaat uit bewijsexemplaren (klein drukwerk, boeken en affiches). Daarnaast zijn er schetsen en correspondentiestukken. Opvallend is de grote hoeveelheid beeldmateriaal, met name dia’s.

Benno Wissing (1923-2008) worked as a painter, draughtsman, set designer and graphic artist but eventually decided to devote himself to the design profession. To him, the visual arts were too detached from society. He believed he could make a greater contribution as a designer. Many of his clients came from the culture sector, especially from Rotterdam. Wissing was one of the founders of Total Design in 1963. He left for the USA in 1978, where he continued to work as a designer. The greater part of his archive consists of author’s copies (small printed matter, books and posters). In addition the archive contains sketches and items of correspondence. Another remarkable feature of the archive is the substantial amount of visual material, especially slides.
