August Aimé Balkema (1906-1996) was in de jaren 1930 en 1940 boekverkoper en uitgever in Amsterdam, in het Huis aan de Drie Grachten. Tijdens de Duitse bezetting richtte hij de clandestiene uitgeverij Vijf Ponden Pers op, een reeks typografisch zorgvuldig verzorgde klassiekers uit de wereldliteratuur. Na zijn vertrek naar Zuid-Afrika werd het bedrijf overgenomen door G. Postma. Het archief bevat onder meer correspondentie uit de oorlogsjaren met auteurs en typografen, alsmede Balkema's financiële administratie uit die tijd.

August Aimé Balkema (1906-1996) was a publisher and bookseller in the 1930's and 1940's, in the Huis aan de Drie Grachten in Amsterdam. During the German occupation he started a clandestine imprint, the Vijf Ponden Pers, in which classical works from world literature appeared in sound editions. After the war, Balkema left for South-Africa and his business was taken over by his former employee G. Postma. This collection contains correspondence with authors and typographers from the war years, as well as his financial administration of that time.

De collectie bestaat uit stukken afkomstig van of met betrekking tot de dichter, schrijver, journalist en vertaler Johan Willem Frederik Werumeus Buning (1891-1958). De stukken stammen met name uit zijn Amsterdamse jaren en zijn door hem geschonken aan, dan wel verzameld door, zijn vriendin Miep (Jacomina Jacoba Berendina) van 't Hoff-Kools (1893-1945). Het betreft manuscripten, typoscripten en publicaties van literair werk, artikelen en kookboeken. De collectie bevat verder correspondentie, foto's en opdrachtexemplaren van publicaties. Met latere aanvullingen.

This collection contains material by or about the poet, author, journalist and translator Johan Willem Frederik Werumeus Buning (1891-1958). Most of the material dates from the period he lived in Amsterdam and was given to or collected by his girl-friend, Miep van 't Hoff-Kools. The collection consists of manuscripts, typescripts, literary publications, articles and cookery books. Besides this, there is correspondence, there are photographs and there are copies of dedicated publications. Since the donation of the collection to the Special Collections in 2005, material has been added to the collection.
