Vesalius, Andreas, 1514-1564

Het Genootschap ter Bevordering van Natuur-, Genees- en Heelkunde werd in 1790 opgericht door de Amsterdamse hoogleraar in de anatomie Andreas Bonn met het doel het wetenschappelijk niveau van de heelmeesters te verhogen. In de loop van de 19e eeuw werden ook geneeskundigen en beoefenaren van de natuurwetenschappen toegelaten tot het lidmaatschap. De nadruk lag op het wetenschappelijke karakter van de medische wetenschappen. In 1855 werd de bibliotheek van het legaat van wijlen J. Monnikhoff aangekocht die de basis zou vormen voor de bibliotheek van het genootschap. Door aankoop en schenkingen groeide de collectie sterk. In 1877 werd de bibliotheek overgedragen aan de Universiteitsbibliotheek. De collectie heeft geen duidelijk eigen gezicht maar bevat wel een groot aantal belangrijke medische werken uit de 15e-19e eeuw.

The Genootschap ter Bevordering van Natuur-, Genees- en Heelkunde (Association for advancement of natural science, medicine and surgery) was founded in 1790 by Andreas Bonn, a professor of anatomy at the University of Amsterdam. His purpose was to raise the level of scientific knowledge of the surgeons. In the course of the nineteenth century general practitioners and practitioners of the natural sciences were admitted as well. The emphasis of the Association was on the scientific character of medicine. In 1855 the library of J. Monnikhoff, which was part of his legacy, was bought. This library was to become the core of the library of the association. By means of purchases and grants the collection increased extensively and was transferred to the University Library. Although the collection does not have a clear individual characteristic, it does contain a large number of medical publications from the 15th to the 19th century.

De Koninklijke Nederlandsche Maatschappij tot bevordering der Geneeskunst (KNMG) is de beroepsvereniging van Nederlandse artsen. Van meet af aan werd er door bestuur en leden aandacht besteed aan de geschiedenis van de geneeskunst in de Nederlanden. Daartoe werd een grote verzameling historisch materiaal aangelegd, waarvan de uitgebreide bibliotheek het belangrijkste onderdeel is. Er werd verzameld volgens de volgende criteria: uitgaven op het terrein van de geneeskunst en haar hulpwetenschappen, geschreven door een Nederlander en/of gepubliceerd binnen de huidige grenzen van Nederland en de voormalige overzeese gebiedsdelen. Als zodanig is de collectie nagenoeg volledig. Met name onder de uitgaven uit de 15e-18e eeuw zijn vele hoogtepunten, vanuit zowel medisch-historisch als boekhistorisch oogpunt. Op haar verzamelterrein behoort de bibliotheek van de KNMG tot de belangrijkste ter wereld.

The Koninklijke Nederlandsche Maatschappij tot bevordering der Geneeskunst (Royal Dutch Society for advancement of Medicine) is the trade union of the Dutch physicians. From the beginning onwards both board and members highly valued the history of medicine in the Netherlands. Therefore, a large collection of historical material was built, of which the extensive library was the most important part. The material was collected according to the following criteria. In the first place, it had to be published in the field of medicine and its auxiliary sciences. In addition, it had to be written by a Dutchman and/or published within the present boundaries of the Netherlands and overseas territories. As such, the collection is practically complete. It contains many highlights, in particular among the fifteenth to eighteenth century publications. The value of these is large, not only from a medical historical point of view, but also from a book historical point of view. Within the field of medicine the library of the KNMG is one of the most important in the world.

Franz Wilhelm Rive (1804-1873) studeerde medicijnen te Bonn en te Utrecht. Hij vestigde zijn reputatie tijdens de beruchte cholera-epidemie die Amsterdam in 1832 trof en waarover hij in 1833 een proefschrift schreef. Rive vestigde zich na zijn promotie als medicus in Amsterdam. De collectie bestaat uit ca. 900 gedrukte werken waarvan 230 dateren van voor 1800. Daaronder zijn onder meer de tweede druk van Vesalius De corporis humana en een editie van Galenus uit 1528. De collectie bevat voorts 158, veelal inmiddels zeldzaam geworden 19e-eeuwse werken over kuuroorden. De collectie van Franz Wilhelm Rive geeft in de eerste plaats een beeld van het soort medische werken dat in de 19de eeuw in de belangstelling van artsen stond.

Franz Wilhelm Rive (1804-1873) studied medicine in Bonn and in Utrecht. He earned his reputation during the notorious cholera epidemic that hit Amsterdam in 1832 and about which he wrote his thesis in 1833. After receiving his doctorate Rive established himself as a practitioner in Amsterdam. The collection consists of about 900 printed works of which 230 date from before 1800, such as the second edition of De corporis humana by Vesalius and an edition of Galenus from 1528. Besides this, the collection contains 158 19th century works about health resorts. Many of these works have become quite rare by now. Rive's collection gives an impression of the kind of medical publications in which practitioners were interested in the 19th century.
