Wurfbain, Carel Lambert, 1837-1904

Carel Lambertus Wurfbain werd in 1837 te Amsterdam geboren en studeerde daar en in Leiden vanaf 1855 medicijnen. In 1862 promoveerde hij tot doctor in de medicijnen en in 1863 tot doctor in de chirurgie en verloskunde. Hij vestigde zich als medicus in Amsterdam waar hij aan het Buitengasthuis verbonden was. In 1870 werd hij privaat-docent aan het Athenaeum Illustre, de voorloper van de Universiteit van Amsterdam, en in 1873 hoogleraar. De collectie bestaat uit ca. 1200 banden en geeft een goed beeld van de 19e-eeuwse geneeskunde, gezien door de ogen van een vooraanstaand beoefenaar. Wurfbain maakte studiereizen en bezocht congressen, en kocht voortdurend boeken over de nieuwste ontwikkelingen in een periode waarin de geneeskunst grote ontwikkelingen doormaakte. Voor het bestuderen van de receptie van die ontwikkelingen is de collectie van groot belang.

Carel Lambertus Wurfbain was born in Amsterdam in 1837. From 1855 he studied medicine in Amsterdam and in Leiden. In 1862 he received his doctorate in medicine. This was followed by a doctorate in surgery and obstetrics in 1863. He established himself as a doctor in Amsterdam where he worked at the Buitengasthuis, one of the hospitals in Amsterdam. In 1870 he became a teacher at the Athenaeum Illustre, the predecessor of the University of Amsterdam, where he became a professor in 1873. The collection consists of about 1200 publications and gives a good impression of 19th century medicine from the point of view of a leading practitioner. Wurfbain made educational trips and visited medical conferences and continually bought books about the latest developments in medicine in a period of history in which this field of science developed rapidly. The collection is of major importance for studying the reception of those developments.
