World ORT Union

Izaak Rafalowicz werd in 1899 in Polen geboren. Omdat het antisemitisme daar toenam, vertrok hij in 1918 naar Nederland. In Amsterdam was Rafalowicz in 1921 betrokken bij de oprichting van de Oost-joodse Cultuurvereniging Sch. An-Ski (1921-1979) waarvan hij vanaf 1945 voorzitter was. Daarnaast was hij lid van de Joodse Coördinatie Commissie (JCC, 1945-1948), die zich inzette voor de wederopbouw van de joodse gemeenschap na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Hij was tevens actief voor de Organisation for Rehabilitation and Training (ORT), zowel voor de internationale organisatie als voor de Nederlandse tak daarvan. De ORT zet zich in voor onderwijs aan de joodse bevolking. In de collectie bevinden zich archivalia van de JCC en van de Stichting ORT-Holland, alsmede publicaties en stukken betreffende internationale congressen van de ORT.

Izaak Rafalowicz was born in Poland in 1899. He moved to the Netherlands in 1918 to escape the rising anti-Semitism in his own country. In Amsterdam, Rafalowicz was involved in the founding of the Eastern Jewish Workers Cultural Society Sch. An-Ski in 1921, of which he was the president from 1945 onwards. At the same time, he was a member of the Jewish Coordination Committee (JCC, 1945-1948), which worked to rebuild the Jewish community after World War II. Rafalowicz was also an active member of the Organisation for Rehabilitation and Training (ORT), working for the international organisation as well as the Dutch branch. The ORT is dedicated to providing education for the Jewish population. The collection contains archival items from the JCC and the ORT Holland Foundation as well as publications and documents dealing with the international ORT congresses.
