Mavors Medicator (Student union)

Het Korps Mavors Medicator, een vereniging voor militaire studenten, werd in 1860 in Utrecht opgericht. De Sociëteit Machäon, uit 1847, werd er datzelfde jaar nog in opgenomen. De concentratie van medische opleidingen leidde in 1865 tot overplaatsing van opleiding en vereniging naar Amsterdam. In 1881 werd de militair-geneeskundige opleiding opgeheven, en daarmee verdwenen ook Mavors Medicator en Sociëteit Machäon. De collectie bestaat uit archiefmateriaal, zoals notulen, correspondentie, financiële verslagen en ledenlijsten, van zowel Mavors Medicator als Sociëteit Machäon. Daarnaast zijn er foto's, bestuurslinten, een voorzittershamer en divers drukwerk. Het opvallend complete archief is cultuurhistorisch van belang vanwege de voor die tijd ongebruikelijke aandacht die de studenten toonden voor sociale vraagstukken.

The student union Mavors Medicator, a student union for students of military medicine, was founded in Utrecht in 1860. In that same year the Sociëteit Machäon, founded in 1847, was incorporated in Mavors Medicator. In 1865 the clustering of medical disciplines led to the transfer of both the discipline and the student union to Amsterdam. In 1881 military medicine was discontinued entirely, and therefore Mavors Medicator and Sociëteit Machäon disappeared as well. The collection consists of archival material, such as minutes, correspondence, financial reports and membership lists of both Mavors Medicator and Sociëteit Machäon. Besides this, there are photographs, board ribbons, a gavel and a variety of printed material. The surprisingly complete archive is important in a cultural historical sense because of the for the period unusual attention the students had for social issues.
