De bibliotheek van het Begijnhof Amsterdam bevat handschriften en drukken van de 15e tot de 20e eeuw. De collectie is door de eeuwen heen in hoofdzaak opgebouwd uit de bibliotheken van pastoors van het Begijnhof onder wie D. van der Mye, S. Coetenburgh, N.J.A. Steins Bisschop en B.H. Klönne. De collectie is van belang voor onderzoek naar onderwerpen als het Mirakel van Amsterdam, de geschiedenis van het Begijnhof en Amsterdamse kerkmuziek. Ook de geschiedenis van de Amsterdamse katholieken, het Jansenisme en de April-beweging zijn goed vertegenwoordigd. In de collectie bevinden zich diverse unieke en zeldzame stukken.

The library of the Begijnhof (Beguinage) in Amsterdam contains manuscripts and books of the 15th to 20th centuries. The collection was formed mainly by the priests of the Begijnhof, such as D. van der Mye, S. Coetenburgh, N.J.A. Steins Bisschop and B.H. Klönne. The collection is important for research into various topics, such as the Miracle of Amsterdam, the history of the Beguinage and church music in Amsterdam. Other well represented topics are the history of Roman Catholics in Amsterdam, Jansenism and the violent protestant response to the restoration of the episcopal hierarchy in April of 1853. The collection contains a number of unique and rare documents.

De particuliere bibliotheek van Jacob Buyck, Amsterdamse theoloog en laatste pastoor van de Oude Kerk voor de Alteratie. De voor zestiende-eeuwse begrippen zeer omvangrijke verzameling van ruim duizend banden werd bijeengebracht in de jaren 1573-1599. In 1632 werd deze boekerij opgenomen in de Stadsbibliotheek, die daarmee in omvang verdubbelde. Het overgrote deel (85 procent) van de gedrukte werken is nog altijd, en vaak in oorspronkelijke staat, aanwezig in de Bijzondere Collecties, die ook enkele van Buycks handschriften bezitten, waaronder een manuscriptcatalogus van zijn boekerij. De inhoud en samenstelling van Buycks boekerij zijn een spiegel van de leef- en denkwereld van een belangrijke en invloedrijke conservatieve, katholieke, Amsterdamse intellectueel in deze roerige periode van de Nederlandse geschiedenis.

This collection was the private library of Jacob Buyck, a theologian born in Amsterdam and the last parish priest of the Church in Amsterdam before the city joined the Alteratie in 1578. The collection consists of more than a thousand books, a very large collection for a single sixteenth century owner, and was assembled between 1573 and 1599. In 1632 the library was assimilated with the municipal Library, which became twice as large as a consequence. The majority of the printed material, about eighty-five percent, is still present at the Special Collections Department, mostly in original condition. There are a few manuscripts of Jacob Buyck himself, including a handwritten catalogue of his library. The content and composition of the library reflect the social and mental world of a conservative, catholic intellectual, both influential and important, living in Amsterdam in this turbulent period in Dutch history.

De collectie boekhandelstasjes is verzameld door Jacobus Cornelis (Sjaak) Hubregtse (1944-2007). Na zijn overlijden zijn nog enkele recentere materialen toegevoegd. De collectie bestaat uit draagtasjes van verschillende materiaalsoorten zoals papier, plastic en linnen die afkomstig zijn van boekhandels, boekenmarkten, uitgevers, (grafische) bedrijven, stichtingen, musea, organisatoren van literaire evenementen, dagbladen, tijdschriften, bibliotheken, archieven en onderwijsinstellingen. De tasjes zijn bedrukt met uiteenlopende typografie, bedrijfsnamen, reclame-uitingen, slogans en citaten. De veelal kleurrijk geïllustreerde tasjes geven een tijdsbeeld van de promotionele activiteiten vanuit de boekhandel.

Dankzij de belangstelling voor Nederlandse letterkunde waren er al vroeg toneelteksten en werken over het toneel opgenomen in de Stadsbibliotheek van Amsterdam. Een zwaartepunt werd het toneel met aanzienlijke schenkingen en aankopen betreffende toneel. De toneelcollectie van de Universiteit van Amsterdam bevat een groot aantal losse en gebonden aanplakbiljetten, programma's, programmaboekjes en aankondigingen van voorstellingen vertoond in verschillende schouwburgen en theaters in Amsterdam en andere plaatsen in Nederland en Vlaanderen.

Thanks to the interest in Dutch literature, theatre plays and works about the theatre were included in the City Library of Amsterdam already early on. The theatre became a primary collecting area when major donations and purchases in this field were added to the collection. The theatre collection of the University of Amsterdam includes a large number of single and bound playbills, programmes and announcements of performances staged in various theatres in Amsterdam and other places in the Netherlands and Flanders.

Het Stripdocumentatiecentrum Nederland (SDCN) is een van de grootste openbare stripcollecties in Nederland. Het werd opgericht door Het Stripschap en de Universiteitsbibliotheek in 1970 en documenteert de geschiedenis van de strip in Nederland. De collectie bevat strips, striptijdschriften en krantenknipsels over strips en archieven van striptekenaars. Er is ook veel secundaire literatuur aanwezig, evenals originele tekeningen. Daaronder bijna alle Dick Bos-verhalen door Alfred Mazure (MAZ) en tekeningen van diverse andere bekende striptekenaars.

De collectie bestaat uit prenten van gebouwen waarin het Athenaeum Illustre, de Universiteit van Amsterdam, of andere instellingen van hoger onderwijs in Amsterdam gevestigd zijn geweest. Ook zijn afbeeldingen opgenomen die dateren uit de periode voorafgaand aan de vestiging. De collectie prenten van voor 1877 is waardevol door haar compleetheid.

The collection consists of topographical prints of buildings of the University of Amsterdam (1877), of its predecessor the Athenaeum Illustre (1632) and of other educational institutes in Amsterdam. The illustrations dated before 1877 are surprisingly complete, which adds to the value of the collection.

De collectie Geschiedenis van de Voeding van de Bijzondere Collecties van de Universiteit van Amsterdam bevat naast vrijwel alle belangrijke Nederlandse kookboeken uit het verleden, een selectie van buitenlandse kookboeken, boeken over diëten, voedingsleer, huishoudkunde, tafelversiering, etiquette en talloze andere onderwerpen. In de Collectie Geschiedenis van de Voeding is een aantal deelcollecties ondergebracht waaronder de Bibliotheek van het Voorlichtingsbureau voor de Voeding, de Collectie Culinair Museum Amersfoort, de Collectie Heyting, en de collecties Johannes van Dam en Witteveen/Cuperus (deels), die beide deel uitmaken van de Gastronomische Bibliotheek. De collectie Geschiedenis van de Voeding biedt een unieke mogelijkheid om onderzoek te doen naar alle vragen op het gebied van de geschiedenis van eten en drinken.

The "Collectie Geschiedenis van de Voeding" (History of Food Collection) at the Special Collections of the University of Amsterdam contains almost all the important Dutch historical cookery books, a selection of foreign cookery books, books about diets, about dietary studies, home economics, table setting, etiquette and numerous other subjects on food and drink. The collection includes several subcollections: the Library of the Netherlands Bureau for Food and Nutrition Education, the "Collectie Culinair Museum Amersfoort" and a part of the "Gastronomische Bibliotheek" (Gastronomic Library). The History of Food Collection offers a unique possibility to research all aspects of the history of food and drink.
